ACE AWARE Peyton Barsel is a senior at the Meadows School and an advocate for children who’ve experienced trauma, promoting awareness and finding solutions for the negative outcomes associated with adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). Peyton presented legislation in 2019 which has led to training all Nevada school employees on how to support kids affected by traumas and co-authored the trauma-informed training being implemented. She also created a non-profit, ACE Aware, to raise awareness about ACES and funds to offer training nationally and developed a website connecting children of trauma to community-based services. Peyton’s passion to make a change stemmed from a personal journey that began when she was nine when her father died unexpectedly. She struggled from the trauma of his sudden death and the erratic, unsettling behavior of her grief-stricken mother. She had previously been a happy, popular girl succeeding in school but after he died, Peyton changed becoming withdrawn and depressed, seeing the world as a scary place. Her friends and teachers avoided her, not knowing how to help. Two years post-loss, still struggling socially, Peyton began volunteering at an organization named Adam’s Place that offered grief support groups. She completed a year-long training to become that center’s first teenage facilitator. In the five years since, she’s volunteered over 400 hours, helping young kids identify and effectively cope with their feelings resulting from loss.

Emboldened by her impact as a role model, at just fourteen Peyton wrote to Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval to plead for official recognition of the healing power of peer support groups. He proclaimed April 28, 2017 Peer Support Awareness Day in her honor. Peyton became so well-known in the grief support community that when the mass-shooting occurred in Las Vegas in 2017, teachers from local schools contacted her to advise them on how to support students. By high school, Peyton profoundly recognized how her school’s unenlightened response to her trauma had perpetuated her isolation and pain. She began surveying kids of trauma and realized her school experiences were not unique and change needed to begin in the classroom. Kids of trauma weren’t healing from their unfortunate life circumstances and were, in fact, being re-traumatized at school by teachers’ lack of compassion and understanding. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates 45% of children nationwide experience at least one ACE. Trauma can seriously interrupt a child’s school routine as well as their ability to learn. Decades of research have established that children affected by trauma are significantly more likely to deal with chronic disease in adulthood, as well as social and emotional problems. In fact, studies show that individuals who’ve experienced four or more ACEs are ten times more likely to use illicit drugs and 12 times more likely to attempt suicide. Although the impact of ACEs can be significant and long-lasting, it can be reduced and
even prevented by providing schools training and tools they need to establish safe, stable and nurturing environments for children. The involvement of the school is, therefore, critical in supporting students through the emotional challenges they may face following a traumatic event. After learning about the positive impact trauma-informed schools have on kids like Peyton, she spent countless hours researching laws relating to trauma-informed education and discovered only one state had passed a bill requiring this kind of training. Peyton was determined for Nevada to be the second. She used that bill to draft her own, secured an assemblywoman to carry it, and met with dozens of legislators and lobbyists to determine their level of support, addressing any of their concerns. In April 2019, at age sixteen, Peyton presented in a seven-minute testimony, her bill on trauma-training for teachers to the Committee on Education in the state Assembly. Unfortunately, the bill did not pass but her story and solution echoed in the hearts and minds of the Legislators who heard it. The opposition related to budgetary and time constraints for teachers, but legislators, lobbyists, and special interest groups all rallied behind her proposal and suggested she speak to the author of another education bill including training for teachers that had passed.
Peyton did just that, met with the school district, and outlined her goals and objective. The school administrators were now very supportive of her efforts because she had become so wellknown for her commitment, passion, and knowledge of traumatraining. In fact, they gave her free reign to research and develop the program. Peyton has co-written the training with the school district’s social workers and assistant superintendent and is appearing in a landmark training video based on best practices she researched for trauma-informed schools that every school employee in the state, custodian to principal, will see in 2020. The training educates school staff on the likely reactions to trauma, how to identify these children, and what steps to take to help support them by responding to negative behavior as an opportunity to teach self-awareness and seek solutions to remove barriers these children face. Peyton has won the Prudential Community Spirit Award in 2019, is a Coca-Cola Semifinalist, has been recognized on the Senate Floor twice and the Assembly Floor once and had acknowledgement from both Governors Sisolak and Sandoval as well as both U.S. Senators for her outstanding community service and volunteerism.

C.A.R.E COMPLEX Located in the heart of the Corridor of Hope, in downtown Las Vegas, The C.A.R.E. Complex is a 501c3 organization with a mission to end homelessness one individual at a time. Through services provided, clients are assisted in reaching self-sufficiency and selfreliance, with the ultimate goal being their transition out of homelessness. The services offered provide clients the tools they need to make a successful transition out of homelessness and the responsibility is placed on the client to utilize these tools. Services offered at C.A.R.E. include identification retrieval, locker storage, transportation assistance, a housing program, resume assistance, internet access, clothing, and hygiene items. Though many organizations offer services to Las Vegas’ homeless population, C.A.R.E.’s services are designed to end, not serve homelessness. In that this population faces a multitude of barriers, the services offered are aimed at breaking those barriers and providing handups, as opposed to hand-outs. All services are intended to aid clients in obtaining and sustaining full-time employment, and becoming entirely self-sufficient. Providing our unique services allows C.A.R.E. to lift our clients out of homelessness by providing personal, compassionate case management in our centrallylocated facility. This organization operates on a personable level where client’s dignity is always of high priority. CARE recognizes that each client is unique and that no two situations are alike. CARE does not receive government assistance and our mission relies entirely

on private donations. Being privately funded allows for the necessary flexibility to meet each client’s unique needs. One of our main programs is the Homeless to Home program. Often, one of the last barriers to ending one’s homelessness, is the additional costs of deposit and first month’s rent. Through the Homeless to Home program, eligible clients who have obtained steady employment and reached a level of self-reliance that shows they are able to sustain permanent housing are awarded a subsidy that averages $1,000. This amount allows for each client to secure permanent housing. Success story from one of our Homeless to Home housing recipients: “During my adverse tenure here in Las Vegas, I have been faced with a multitude of obstacles and hardships. When I came here in 2018, I knew nobody or had any idea of any resources that would help me in my situation. An associate introduced me to the CARE Complex and the level of genuine care to help people was astonishing! I was able to gain employment through a CARE Complex volunteer, I was helped with bus passes to make it back and forth to work to obtain the necessary income I needed to start my climb. Brittany especially, has been very instrumental in helping me and motivating me to get out of my situation. She has been very efficient, courteous and professional while providing authentic care and communication. I just want to say, without the CARE Complex, I have no idea where I would be, but now, I know where I am headed.”

CASA HOGAR ORPHANAGE Friends of Casa Hogar was started to help the children in need in Cabo San Lucas as well as San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Our social assistance centers for both boys and girls, have changed not only their lives, but the community as a whole. We often get asked why we chose to focus our financial and physical efforts on children in another country outside of the United States. There is poverty and need everywhere, including here in the United States, but these children often endure the worst of an already impoverished third-world country. The children in Mexico experience some vulnerable situations with unstable family homes, abuse and limited access to food. We have received children who had to resort to eating the roots of trees and plants for food. When they were brought to us, we provided them with healthy, fulfilling meals made by our caregivers, yet they still wanted the roots of the trees in the yard because that was what they were comfortable with. Over time we were able to gradually adapt them to not eating that way, but it was a process. One of the hardest and saddest situations encountered, and tragically not an isolated incident, was a little boy around seven years old that had been “trafficked” by his father to truck drivers in the community to pay for living expenses. When this boy was finally rescued and sent to us for care, it was revealed this little boy was not only HIV positive, but it had elevated to full-blown AIDS. Our social assistance center is not equipped to care for him so he was transported to Mexico City where he was hospitalized and given full care thanks to our donors. 42

Most of the kids situations are difficult to read about, but there are rewarding sides to these stories. Our staff and donors have helped hundreds of children receive protection and quality care with the ultimate goal to enable them to be reunited with carefully screened alternate family members over time, or grow up in our “Casa Hogar home”. Some of the children are at levels that allow them to attend private school. All are give the opportunity to play sports as well as help perform chores just as any child would do at home. All children receive training in English and computer skills and focused assistance with their other special needs, allowing them to integrate into society in a productive way. Friends of Casa Hogar has helped many children abandoned or ignored by their families and community avoid becoming ghosts of society. One favorite success story is about a nine year old little girl that was placed with us and with care and mentoring she was able to thrive in school. She is now top of her class in medical school with aspirations to be an oncology or pediatric specialist. She has showed us what these children are capable of, if they are given love and support. FOSTER FRIDAY FOUNDATION Foster Friday Foundation’s mission is to raise money and awareness for abused and abandoned animals. 100% of the donations are distributed to our local no-kill animal shelters to assist them with medical expenses, operating expenses, and supplies. Although it takes time and is a financial commitment, Foster Friday Foundation is able to provide the opportunity to help animals in need and in the process, this ultimately benefits both the animals and the community as a whole. When a family expresses interest in adopting one of the animals, our rescue meets with the potential family and makes sure they will be in a safe and loving environment for the animal. The goal is not just to get the animal out of the shelter, it’s to place them in a “furever” and loving home. In addition, Foster Friday Foundation also holds an annual event that raises money and awareness for animals in need. Once again, all the proceeds from this event go directly to the rescues. Sadly, our local rescues are at full capacity with pets that are unwanted, abused, or abandoned. In order for those rescues to adopt out these animals, they need to provide food, shelter, and medical treatment. By doing so, they need enough funds to be able to function properly. Our rescues depend on donations from the community to be able to reach the goal of saving lives. Foster Friday Foundation is doing just that.

Too often, we read or hear about animals being euthanized due to the inability of having proper medical treatment or rescues not having enough funds to help save lives. Foster Friday Foundation provides the necessary monetary funds to rescues to pull animals out of kill shelters in order to provide the medical treatments, surgeries, and proper health care to prepare them in going to a permanent home. It is crucial that we bring awareness to the community in recognizing how much our rescues desperately need help. Foster Friday Foundation was created in order to save the lives of our furry friends. It is extremely important that abused and abandoned animals find the loving home they deserve. Donations are accepted through Venmo @ fosterfriday-foundation, on our Facebook page or call us at (702) 545-0032 to learn more about those animals in need. By spreading awareness, we can be the voice for struggling animals and continue to save lives. Stewart, Liam, and Cookie are just a few of the animals that have been helped by Foster Friday Foundation donations. Sadly, not all of them survive the extent of neglect and/or abuse. With the help of Foster Friday Foundation, rescues, and animal-loving individuals, we can do what needs to be done to prevent unnecessary deaths and instead provide hope for survival.

DOGGIDY DOO DOG RESCUE Like every story with a happy ending, Doggidy Doo was borne from the passion, love, and perseverance of one person who worked to ensure her dream that vulnerable or abandoned animals are placed in happy, healthy homes that foster the human-animal bond. Doggidy Doo is a formally recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. It is an all breed dog rescue based in Las Vegas, Nevada and we are paw-partners with animal shelters in both Nevada and California. Doggidy Doo is completely volunteer based and 100 pennies of each and every tax deductible dollar donated goes directly to the care of our dog crew, many of which have ongoing dietary and medical needs. In addition to providing for our dog crew’s daily needs until their perfect fur-ever family is found, Doggidy Doo also partners with other local charities to provide outreach to the homeless and their pets. It is Doggidy Doo’s mission to encourage community involvement in protecting lost and abandoned animals, and to join the fight against animal abuse. Doggidy Doo carries out its mission with both prevention and education efforts. Doggidy Doo strives to educate people about creating peaceful human and dog relationships. At times, our founder works with families to provide in-home training and education when behavior issues arise in order to prevent the surrender or abandonment of the family dog. Doggidy Doo believes that such education will lead to respect for the animal, safety for the human, and a decline in the overabundance of stray animals. At Doggidy Doo, we believe that animals are not property and that we are entrusted to be their lawful caretakers. That’s why for us—dog adoptions are not pedestrian. We take great care to match humans with a dog companion based on several criteria to ensure it’s the right fit for the entire family. Our dog crew comes to us from families that are no longer able to care for them, at no fault of the dog, and from the local shelters for at-risk dogs that require medical or behavior rehabilitation. Today, the Doggidy Doo dog crew has the perfect dog just for you! We have all sizes, ages, and breeds—even purebreds. Each dog is special and unique just like its fur-ever family. Thanks to a chance meeting with the Doggidy Doo’s founder, I have had the companionship of Buddy, my miniature Dachshund, for nearly 14 years and more recently, the love of Dogo, my deaf, 100 pound sweetheart who ended up at the shelter after being confiscated from an abusive situation. Even more, I’ve had the opportunity to work with and support an organization that is true to its mission.
