LUXURY VISIONS BROUGHT TO LIFE It’s hard to believe we are already in the 3rd quarter of 2018. This year is truly flying by, and it’s been an amazing year for real estate. New construction is at an all-time high, and there have been record sales in the valley. Earlier this summer, we reached last years total for homes sold over $5,000,000 (approximately a half dozen). IN THIS ISSUE When I think of summer, I think of delicious weekends on Long Island, endless days of sunshine, and spending time with my beloved daughter Molly. One of my favorite things is taking her on adventures; recently, I delighted in seeing her discover Disneyland. My “minime” loves simple pleasures like eating ice cream on a hot afternoon, yet she’s also been exposed to small luxuries. Lately, I’ve been thinking about the word “luxury” and what it means. Decadent, sometimes pricey, and always exclusive. Luxury is something in which to aspire. It’s also a lifestyle, and I hope as you flip through these pages, you’ll find a collection of beautiful homes and lavish estates that are all in word, luxurious. The theme of this issue is architecture, and no luxury home would be complete without smart design and sleek functionality. Our spotlighted property—Ridge Blossom—was custom-built by exacting owners; its features are an architectural dream. We also talk with designer Jennifer Sher about her aesthetic for the discerning homeowner. No summer issue would be complete without ice cream and sunglasses! We chat with Creamberry about their colorful treats, as well as showcase high-end eyewear at RetroSpecs. Also, we visit with Broadway veteran Niki Scalera on her latest show in Las Vegas. Nestled in a bustling corner of the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Las Vegas is the largest collection of museum- quality 20th century eyewear in the world. RetroSpecs and Co. showcases the golden age eyewear manufactured circa 1910-1970 while offering its clients a bespoke luxury fashion experience. RetroSpecs mission is for its clients to find “registered historic eyewear fabricated and restored by exacting old world standards”. Founder Jay Owens’ passion for his life work is evident. During his college days, he restored 1940s gold-filled spectacles that he retrofitted to use while pitching for the school’s baseball team. Soon, family and friends started asking for him to find and restore these unique frames for them. Now with three retail locations, frames in places like Bergdorf Goodman, and over 300 exclusive dealerships around the world, RetroSpecs has become the Sotheby’s of historic eyewear. Each historic RetroSpecs frame comes with a certificate of authenticity and a lifetime guarantee for parts. According to Owens, each piece is an archetype, a first-generation design from an era when companies competed to create innovative styles the from the best materials in the world at the most

affordable price. “Our clients not only own an extremely fashionable pair of glasses but also a piece of design history that can never be produced in the same quality again,” Owens adds. Dustin Carver manages the Las Vegas boutique, and he delights in showcasing the history of his frames. While each piece in the store is typically one of less than 50 frames available worldwide, the highlight of Carver’s tour is an early 1900s antique vault that houses the store’s rarest wares. In this 7,000-pound vault are one-of-a-kind frames from the late 1920s, WWII aviators, extremely rare 1970s Dior sunglasses, and fashionable Mad Men-style acetate frames from the late 1950s. All are favorites among A-list actors, famous writers, lawyers, artists, doctors, and politicians. RetroSpecs also brings these remastered frames into current technology with cutting edge RX and sun lenses. You started Jennifer Sher design in 2006. What inspired you to start your own design firm? My parents always hired the coolest, wildest interior designers. It must have been about 1978 when our living room was redecorated with glossy red lacquer wallpaper that extended all the way onto the floor, all white furniture, and slightly obscene lithographs. It was outrageously sensational, and the neighbors were scandalized. As long as I can remember, I have loved design and architecture. I have a Bachelor of Science in Interior Design, and I previously had a design firm in Tucson from 1994 to 1998 until we moved to California and I took several years off to raise our growing family. We moved to Vegas in 2000, and by the time our youngest was settled into pre-school, I was itching to get back to my career. Clients with custom homes across the valley have worked with you. What is your process when starting with a new home? When beginning a new project, we start with taking our first cue from the architecture. Then we spend time with the client listening to things like their goals and wish list items, how they live, what is important to them, what style

they like, and so forth. Without really taking the time to understand what the client wants, it is impossible to set the correct strategy in place. Once we truly know what the goal is and have defined our program, we can dig in and get creative. You’re involved with a partnership with Tesla homes. What can you tell us about this venture? Currently I’m working with Growth Luxury Homes (GLH) on a project where they are creating a first-of-its-kind net zero luxury community incorporating Tesla products. We are just now starting to work on the interior finishes for the six models and are having a blast. Tesla is one of the only luxury car brands currently offering a vegan version of their cars, so during our first project meeting with GLH, we proposed creating vegan interiors for the model homes. What are the current trends in interior design, and how do you put a Vegas spin on them? There is definitely a trend towards modernization in design here in Las Vegas. It seems like everyone wants modern architecture, and the interiors are following suit. A Vegas spin? Vegas is the ultimate. It’s where opportunity,

sunshine, philanthropy, community, the best of everything, and the most fun you will ever have all coexist. After living here for 18 years, I feel “Vegas” means “This one goes to eleven”, so I try to keep improving. I strive to bring more to the table- more sophistication, more rigor, more evolution, more bravery. It’s our design issue: please tell us about your aesthetic and inspiration. I’d characterize my personal style as modern eclectic. I have a love for African and Native American art, old kilim rugs, books, and artifacts we drag home from our travels. My husband has a beautiful guitar collection and a habit of acquiring art featuring rock stars. We currently have Elvis, Tom Petty, John Lennon, and Mick Jagger hanging out in our living and family rooms. When designing for a client I am much more disciplined, and I stay true to the design “story”. I feel like the odd things I love and my passion for travel lends an unexpected flavor to the overall feel of my work. Getting out into the world and seeing firsthand what is going on in the industry is a good investment; it keeps us ahead of the game here at home.

CABARET Genuine Broadway star and Las Vegas resident Niki Scalera sits down with IS Luxury at North Italia in Summerlin and chats with us about her new hit revue at Cleopatra’s Barge at Caesars Palace. Over a seasonal vegetable salad, this powerhouse performer tells us about The Cocktail Cabaret, her storied musical theatre past, and how she came to call Las Vegas home.

After a childhood of acting and years of music lessons, Scalera attended college at NYU. Directly after, she crisscrossed the country in the national tour of Footloose. She estimates she performed 400 shows that first year, eventually ending up in LA after it concluded. Scalera auditioned for film and movie roles—and even co-wrote and recorded an entire album of “edgy, angry music” with pop star Ne-Yo. During this time, Scalera met her husband; Las Vegas played a central role in their relationship, as the scene of their engagement during a winter getaway. But musical theatre was calling, and she was soon auditioning in New York and for an open call on the famed Jubilee! stage for We Will

Rock You. Scalera was offered a part in the ensemble here, as well as understudy for the female leads. Immediately after the final curtain of this show, she landed a role back on Broadway when Tarzan opened. Scalera next dazzled as Penny in Hairspray on the Great White Way, starring opposite Lance Bass until the show closed. Soon after, she and her husband were expecting their son Jack (now 7), and they made the decision to move back to Las Vegas. Of her adopted hometown, she says, “Vegas is like New York with a backyard; it’s another city that never sleeps with great restaurants and entertainment.” Here, she’s performed in the Smith Center’s Composer’s Showcase and has a one-woman show paying homage to Dame Shirley Bassey. Besides having similar vocal stylings, Scalera says “She never compromised her music in all of her 81 years.” And it’s no coincidence that Scalera’s favorite number during her Cabaret set is Bassey’s Diamonds Are Forever, which she confidently belts while rocking jewels from Jubilee! and a bold sequin gown. Of performing at the iconic venue where the Rat Pack once entertained, Scalera says she is part of a close-knit cast with costars Eric Jordan Young, Daniel Emmet, Maren Wade, and pianist Philip Fortenberry. Created by Fortenberry and musical theatre veteran Keith Thompson, The Cocktail Cabaret is the perfect mix of snappy tunes and world-class performers like Scalera, all proud to call Las Vegas home.

We are obsessed with your menu of amazing ice cream delights. Can you please offer some insight on your approach to your creamy treats? My main concept is to bring cultural diversity to the Valley with desserts from all around the world. Our rolled ice cream has a Thai background; our menu includes influences from across the U.S., the Philippines, Hong Kong, and Mexico. What is your favorite thing on the menu to enjoy on a hot summer day? Everything on our menu is great to enjoy in the heat! Our rolled ice cream can be customized to make anything you’d like into a fresh creation. Our Mangoberrynada—a mango strawberry slushie with chamoy and tajin seasoning and a spicy tamarind straw—has Latin flavor hints and is very refreshing. You’re relatively new to the Las Vegas area. Why did you decide to open Creamberry here? I’m originally from Southern California, and there are so many diverse options for desserts there. I moved to Las Vegas 7 years ago and decided to open a dessert spot with diversity. Since Las Vegas attracts people globally, I thought it was the perfect place to introduce desserts from around the world. What do you think is next for the Las Vegas dining scene? Las Vegas continues to attract the best dining and nightlight spots from all over the world. Why would it be any different for dessert? I think what is coming out in the food and beverage space globally will always find its way here. It’s our design issue. Tell us how you “architect” your famous cotton candy burrito. The idea came to me one night when enjoying Mexican food. Why not try to recreate my burrito…as a dessert? Part of the magic is how we start with multi-colored cotton candy, add three dry toppings and three scoops of ice cream, and serve these sweet ingredients in a giant—and delicious—burrito!

The Brooklyn Bell Spritz This cocktail comes straight from NYC, and is your perfectly quenching, tart hero to battle against the summer heat. Fill the tallest glass in the house with ice, pour on the Aperol, then, top off with Brooklyn Bell Air Sour and a gentle stir. (5 parts beer to 1 part Liqueur is a good ratio) Garnish with respect and please remember to party tartly and deliciously… responsibly.

As you might’ve guessed it’s from Germany, but what might surprise you is that it’s the world’s first Hefeweizen (wheat beer) grapefruit beer. Best served cold, it’s the perfect casual brew to cool you off during the summer, but it can be enjoyed all year round any time of the day. It’s a true 50/50 blend of total refreshment made from 50% Schofferhofer Hefeweizen blended with 50% carbonated juice of 100% natural ingredients. Schofferhofer + Jagermeister = Schoffermeisterjagerhofer! The citrus and spice is a very nice combination and low alcohol and dilution from the ice makes a delicious, pungent but not overpowering sipper. In a tall glass, pour the Jager over ice and slowly pour the Shofferhofer over to fill the glass. Ratio to your own taste but, 5 parts beer to 1 part liqueur is a good place to start. A gentle stir, garnish with respect and you’re good to go.
