COMPETITION

WHAT THE HECK IS Lomography began with an innocent encounter in the early 1990’s when students in Vienna, Austria, stumbled upon the Lomo Kompakt Automat: a small, enigmatic Russian camera, perfected by the USSR Minister of Defense and Industry and his comrade, the Director of the LOMORussian Arms and Optical Factory. Being students, they shot from the hip, upside down, and sometimes even by looking through the viewfinder. They were astounded with the mindblowing photos that it produced. The colours were vibrant, with deep saturation and vignettes that framed the shot, it was like nothing they had seen before. Upon returning home, friends wanted their own Lomo LC-A, igniting a new style of artistic experimental photography that we now know as Lomography. Pictures are what Lomography is all about. Nothing compares to the feeling of visually diving into a pool of shining, new, sweet-smelling lomographs. Summer is for sunbathing, lazy picnics and sundowners...

Trendy Beaches Camps Bay is situated across the road from the strip of trendy restaurants and bars and this is the place to be seen. Not a great swimming beach due to cold water and strong currents: perfect for sunbathing. The tidal pool is great for kids.

24

Clifton has four beautiful white beaches divided by rocks and boulders which shelter them from the wind. Clifton 1st is for the more active beachgoer and Clifton 2nd and 3rd are suited for sunseekers and celeb spotters. It’s packed over the festive season and school holidays so get there early.

l LATITUDE l OCTOBER-NOVEMBER 2012

Cape Town has an abundance of sun-drenched beaches that reach their sandy shores into either the Atlantic or Indian Ocean. The differences between the two oceans determine your day out. The Atlantic Seaboard is renowned for its gorgeous eateries and an abundance of spectacular places to stay. Whereas the Indian Ocean coastline is a little more off the beaten track and there are great little shops and markets where you can find authentic goodies. The beaches along the Atlantic Seaboard, from the V&A Waterfront to Hout Bay, are where the hot and hip crowds hang out. The water here is a few degrees colder than its Indian Ocean counterpart but it is fine to hop in and out of the sea whilst sunbathing. Drive a bit further to the east side of the peninsula and you will come to the Indian Ocean beaches. The water is a bit warmer here and you will find more child-friendly beaches. The Muizenberg, Kalk Bay and Simon’s Town beaches are a lot less trendy and are often frequented by the locals.

Child-friendly Beaches Boulders Beach is for kids, and adults, who can’t get enough of the penguins at this Simon’s Town beach. The water is usually reasonably warm and calm which makes for safe swimming. The kids can amuse themselves for hours by playing around the boulders.

Fish Hoek is an excellent swimming and boogie boarding beach. The beach is big and usually quite clean, so sandcastles and sunbathing is a must. Shark attacks have happened here so be mindful of the shark spotters’ flag and play in the very shallow waters.

Saunders Rock in Sea Point is a great spot where parents can watch their kids play in the beautiful tidal pool. There are many rocks that kids can clamber over while exploring the abundance of sea creatures.

LATI UDE’s favourite day out.

9:00

Meet at Vida e café, snug in the heart of Camps Bay’s legendary Victoria Road, the strip where the in-crowd hangs out. Enjoy the early morning sun on your face as you sip on a caffé latte. Try their new low gi muffin. I adore the Salmao com Queijo, a delicious salmon and cheese croissant. If you start your day out in Kalk Bay you simply can’t miss the delicious breakfasts on offer at The Olympia Café.

12:30

I love to chill at the Chapman’s Peak Hotel for its fresh and perfectly prepared seafood and the spectacular ocean, harbour and mountain views. It is situated a mere 15-minute drive from the Twelve Apostles Hotel, and at the foot of the world-famous Champan’s Peak Drive in Hout Bay. Try their house specialty, grilled calamari served in a pan.

10:30

A 5-minute drive down the road towards Hout Bay and you will find yourself at The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa. Their heated infinity pool is simply gorgeous and they have 7 treatment rooms for your favourite spa indulgences. The hotel recently appeared on the Condé Nast Traveler Magazine list of the 80 best new hotels in the world. It has incredible views of the Atlantic Ocean.

13:30

Stay on the sundeck for an extended lazy lunch or stroll across the road to the lovely sandy Hout Bay Beach. Take a dip in the cool water, the best spot is in the area closest to the hotel. I enjoy doing a bit of kayaking or horse riding, which must be arranged from an operator. October falls in the whale season, so keep an eye out!

15:00

Take the scenic route over Chapman’s Peak to the fishing village of Kalk Bay. Life seems to slow down a lot in here. The narrow roads are filled with antique stores, second-hand bookshops, art galleries, delis and restaurants.

18:00

Sundowners at Polana is a must. It is part of the Harbour House family of restaurants in the heart of the Kalk Bay harbour. The cocktail bar is literally on the rocks so you enjoy drinks and tapas at sea level. If the sea is a little tempestuous, the waves actually crash against the windows. If you are on the Atlantic Coast, watch the sun set from the vantage point of any of the cafes and bars along the Camp’s Bay and Clifton main roads.

Grab an ice-cream at Sirocco and take a stroll around the harbour. I enjoy watching the fishermen as they bring in their catch and display it all along the harbour’s edge. The wrinkly fishmongers are eccentric, and often amuse visitors by feeding the fat seals with scraps of fish.

19:30

I can never get enough of the Kalk Bay Theatre. The creative people here transformed a beautiful old church into a gorgeous little theatre and they work around the clock to put on only the best performances. I recommend their dinner and theater package. If night is about to fall and you find yourself along the Atlantic Ocean’s coastline, dinner and a show at Pieter Toerien’s Theatre on the Bay is a must. This gem is in Camps Bay and a lovely place to enjoy sundowners and a bite before watching a show.

........................ How to get there: It is easy to fly to Johannesburg from all over the world. From there you can rent a car or a 4x4 vehicle and drive for four hours to Drakensberg. A slightly longer but very scenic drive is to go through the beautiful town of Clarens. From there you drive through Golden Gate National Park. he original people of South Africa, the Bushmen, often referred to as the San, lived here. They lived in complete harmony with nature and believed in the spirit of the animals that were always with them. At night they stoked up enormous fires and often induced a healing trance, a sort of dreamtime, calling up their ancestors. The exhausted dancers then used their paintings as a medium to show the rest of the tribe what they had experienced. Their paint was made from blood, iron oxide, charcoal, bird droppings and clay. It is said that the oldest painting on a rock shelter in here dates back about 2400 years. An area such as the UKhahlamba Park, a World Heritage site, has a high-density of rock paintings and can get very touristy. Lodges, hotels and resorts are springing up all over the place. The secret to avoiding the masses lies in travelling higher into the mountains where the roads are less accessible and the crowds thin out. You will need a 4x4 vehicle for some of these roads. An excellent trail is Mike’s Pass, a 32km drive, with splendid scenery. This is a challenging road and you will need to know how to use your 4x4 skills. Sani Pass is a slightly less demanding route with access from Himeville in the southern Drakensberg. Stay over in the less-explored but breathtakingly beautiful Himeville before carrying on with the pass as it climbs upward reaching the top of the Drakensberg escarpment at 2 873m. You may have to rough it a bit to discover some of the more remote outdoor galleries, but be sure that Drakensberg has its fair share of luxurious resorts that will pamper you after a long day out. A cultural journey to this area is perfect during late October to early March. The summer is usually deliciously warm and the mountains are lush and green. This is a great time to haul out your adventurous spirit, and your camera, and to follow the mystical path that leads you to the heart of our forefathers.

Love

BUENOS AIRES

I

love the humour of this complex city. The porteños’ dance is the slow, melancholy tango, though they fire-off words like it’s the last they’ll ever gush. They love x-rated public displays of affection, but have secret affairs in telos (sex hotels), the most popular time being lunchtime. They’re god-fearing and love their mums, yet Thursday night is noche de trampa (cheating night). Yes, really. Buenos Aires is the only city in the world where staring at strangers, joining a picket line, feasting at midnight, drumming up drama and weekly therapies are expected. And the meat! In BA every day is a carne-val. Now that summer has arrived, you can smell the chorizo smoke rising from the terraces, whether from the parrilla steakhouses or home-cooked asados. Buenos Aires is often labelled the Paris of South America. Yes, it is the most Europeanised city in Latin America, but stay a while and you’ll soon realise that whilst the architecture, people and café culture might bear resemblances, this is far from European. Everything here is pure Latino, which means it is rather loco, from the politics and corruption, to the late nights filled with eccentric people. This is a world where hair salons look like clubs and closed doors hide underground restaurants, secret late-night bars and a beer-serving tattoo parlour. In short, it’s sexy. Any city that has a huge phallus, a giant tulip and a pink house as its icons must be in touch with its sexuality, right? This is a city where the women stare as much as the men, and the buses wolf-whistle. You’ll miss this when you leave.

Buenos Aires is a foodie destination. Whilst it’s impossible to list all the cool eateries, from legendary parrillas (steakhouses) to fusion, here are my favourite for onda (vibe) and riquissima food. THE place to go to for authentic old school ambience is family-run EL OBRERO for their ojo de bife (rib-eye steak). If any big bands come to Buenos Aires, this is where they go as it’s got a grungy vibe. The legendary Pixies loved it and it’s Bono’s favourite place in the city - just sayin’. Peruvian ceviche is big in Buenos Aires. I often crave this raw fish in citrus juices and chilli peppers and CHAN CHAN is a kitsch hipster-tastic fave. Smother it in salsa verde, and weep, then wash it down with a frozen Pisco Sour. CAFÉ SAN JUAN is my favourite place, an intimate tapas, steak and seafood restaurant. Share a massive dish from the chalk menu carried around by the, extremely good-looking, waiters. Be careful when you leave not to knock over the neighbouring table’s bottle of wine with your bag, like I did. Told you it was intimate. IL BALLO DEL MATTONE is oneof-a-kind, because it’s not just a trattoria serving old-school homemade pasta. Run by an artist, this Italian restaurant-comegallery hosts exhibitions and classes and ‘ExpressArte’ on the last Wednesday of the month. It’s an art fest block party with bands, psychedelic boob painting, dreads on decks, tightropes between trees, free gnocchi and wine. Argentines love to stick pumpkin in everything. They also love big raviolis. These two go perfectly at SALGADO ALIMENTOS, my favourite place for pasta casera (homemade). It’s all about the ravioles calabaza and casual onda. Every Monday I sample flavours in JAUJA, a Patagonian ice-cream parlour that sells 2 kilos for the price of 1 on the most miserable day of the week. Genius idea and it’s open late. Whilst others are drunkenly buying kebabs in the wee hours, porteños are savouring creamy Dulce de Leche ice creams. Yes, this means I eat 2 kilos a week. So what?

Late night tango dive bar LO DE ROBERTO is my favourite hangout. It’s the bohemian Buenos Aires you see in National Geographic photos: an old dude who has been regaling aficionados with mournful songs of lost love and horses for over 30 years. Dusty bottles and lyric sheets adorn crumbling walls, but the best thing is, there’s no dancing, therefore no performance anxiety. Monday’s BOMBA DE TIEMPO is a must-do BA experience. Sample the rhythms of Buenos Aires in the open air. It’s a 30-person drum circle percussion extravaganza in the former factory that is Ciudad Cultural Konex, like being at a world music fest, but in an abandoned Argentine parking lot. For a wholesome activity the dayafter-the-night-before, I like a wander in Bosques de Palermo’s ROSEDAL Park. I could pretend I join the Porteños running, power-walking, rollerblading and cycling, but I just people-watch. If you want an arty fix, you’ve got the MALBA, The Latin American Art Museum of Buenos Aires. On a Sunday it’s fun to go relic-hunting around San Telmo and its markets. PASAJE DE DEFENSA is great for a photo op. It’s a refurbished 1880 house filled with brica-brac and characters drinking coffees, bathed in shards of light surrounding the stairwell at dusk. The perfect end to a Sunday is winning a balcony table-with-aview over Plaza Dorrego to catch candombe drumming and street tango over a glass of Argentine red, or channeling Borges at literary venue LA POESíA.

I love the electrotango nights, which seem surreal within the elegant 1930’s ballroom. Every time I go to Bar Lo De Roberto, I head on to the hip, LA CATEDRAL, to continue the alternative tango experience. It’s a beautiful old factory, with Tuesdays the most popular with first-timers. Another cool place is LA MALDITA in San Telmo. It has good dancers, a cool crowd and an unforgettable live band called Orquesta Típica El Afronte. It’s a fantastic place to hear bandoneonistas. If you enter the red door of EL BESO, you’ll fall in love with the serious side of tango. The standard is higher than many clubs as it belongs to one of the city’s best tango schools, the age range is more mixed and the men are less on the pull. To watch Buenos Aires’ classiest and best dancers, head to Palermo’s old-world, traditional SALON CANNING. You must not leave Buenos Aires without treading on well-heeled latino tootsies, whether in a formal class, at a late night tango underground milonga (tango dance hall) or in an intercambio (exchange) with a tall, dark aficionado. However, be aware it’s not just about mastering the steps, but the etiquette too. I’ve still to master the intertwined legs. For now I stick to attempting to share oxygen with an Argentine so hot I’m constantly calculating how to contort to take a photo of him, whilst dancing, without him noticing. For an informal intro into the world, I love San Telmo’s Plaza Dorrego on a Sunday for its outdoor LA MILONGA DEL INDIO. After stallholders have packed up the Artisan Fair, the colourful string of lights come on and it’s tango o’clock. This spot is great for perving the scene, without having to participate. Book Review EVITA PERON - LA RAZON DE MI VIDA

JORGE LUIS BORGES - MOMENTS

No me arrepiento por ninguna de las palabras que he escrito. ¡Tendrían que borrarse primero en el alma de mi pueblo que me las oyó tantas veces y que por eso me brindó su cariño inigualable! ¡Un cariño que vale más que mi vida!

If I were able to live my life again, next time I would try to make more mistakes. I would not try to be so perfect. I would be more relaxed. I would be much more foolish than I have been. In fact, I would take very few things seriously. I would be much less sanitary. I would run more risks. I would take more trips, I would contemplate more sunsets, I would climb more mountains, I would swim more rivers. I would go to more places I have never visited. I would eat more ice cream and fewer beans. I would have more real problems, fewer imaginary ones...

(I am not sorry for a word that I have written. They would first have to be wiped out of the soul of my people, which has heard them from me so often and because of that offered me its un-paralleled affection. An affection worth more than my life!) These are the final words of La Razón de mi vida (My Mission in Life), the book written by Evita Peron in 1951. The following year the iconic Argentine woman died from cancer at only 33 years old. Even today, sixty years after her death, she is considered the spiritual leader of the nation, the recognition that was given to her a few years before her death. Always close to the people and ready to recognize their rights, she influenced the political life of Argentina and she garnered the attention of the world of culture and cinema. Who can forget Evita the famous musical about her life starring Madonna and Antonio Banderas with the song Don’t cry for me Argentina. She is buried in the cemetery of Recoleta in Buenos Aires.

Thus begins Moments, one of the most famous poems of Jorge Luis Borges (Buenos Aires, 1899-Ginevra, 1986), the Argentine writer regarded as one of the greatest of the twentieth century. Novelist, poet and essayist, he showed his remarkable talent for literature and especially for fairy tales from an early age. In 1953 he realized his greatest desire, becoming director of the National Library in Buenos Aires (an absolute must). Truly varied is his production of short stories, novels, essays and poems. He influenced the whole modern culture, was even mentioned in popular music (Elvis Costello) and famous comics (the Doom Patrol series signed by Grant Morrison).

magine more than a thousand kilometres of slopes, situated along one of the planet’s most spectacular set of mountains, the Dolomites. Then think about elegant resorts with steaming open-air hot pools surrounded by shiny blankets of snow. Try to picture cosy candlelit restaurants, permeated by the fragrance of local wood, which serve expertly prepared traditional dishes and local award-winning wines. Now you have a good idea of what to expect from a holiday in Val Gardena. Surrounded by impressive peaks, this valley stretches for about 25km along the Isarco River, in the north-eastern part of Italy. Val Gardena’s excellent slopes and breathtaking natural wonders have attracted enthusiastic skiers and mountain lovers since the beginning of the twentieth century. However, this land is known for more than just its extraordinary landscape. Val Gardena is also the cradle of the very ancient Ladino culture, still very strong in many aspects of the valleys inhabitants’ life such as the spoken language, the art of wood carving - a fundamental income for the local economy - and the gastronomy, for sure one of the valley’s most popular attractions. The best culinary destinations are often complimented by elegant accommodation facilities and stylish wellness centers so you get the best out of your ski holiday.

GOURMET TOURS ON SKIS It is a fact that hours of skiing at extremely cold temperatures stimulate great appetites. Nothing can be more rewarding than finding top of the range restaurants, serving succulent meals, along the skiing tracks. Val Gardena is certainly the trailblazer of this new winter trend; gourmet skiing tours.

Sella Ronda Do not miss out on this adventure if you are a passionate skier. The ski circuit is 40km long and along the way it’s scattered with many huts that will tempt you to take a gourmet detour. Among the best in Passo Gardena is Jimmy Hutte (www.jimmyhutte.com), with Michelin stars for both 2010 and 2011, and famous for their Spinach Canederli topped with melted cheese. Further on, and just before the end of the ski tour, in Piz Sella, is another hut popular for its cuisine, Emilio Comici Hutte

48

(www.rifugiocomici.com), where you can indulge in delicious seafood dishes whilst enjoying the views at 2000 meters high.

Alpe di Siusi Known as Europe’s largest plateau, this destination has some of the sunniest slopes of the valley and it’s a favourite of crosscountry skiers. For the best experience in Alpe di Siusi, you must eat in a malga, a typical mountain chalet which turns into a working dairy farm in summer. Daniel is the proud owner of Baita Sanon (www.sanon. it), a rustic hut made up of cosy lounges decorated with old wood traditionally called stube. Here the proximity to the Austrian border - only 60km away - has particularly influenced the cuisine, and so popular dishes include the Kaiserschmarrn, a delicious Austrian version of our pancake, and the Apfelstrudel, a Viennese flat dessert made of

apples and pastry, served warm with custard cream. Thanks to the mild slopes, this area is also famous for the hilarious toboggan runs and the romantic carriage rides.

Santa Croce With a total of eight family-owned huts, each offering a specialty dish from South Tyrol traditional cuisine, this is considered the king of the gourmet ski tour of the Dolomites. The tracks are not too steep, making this tour ideal for families who want to spend a day surrounded by pristine nature and culture. If I have to choose, I will not miss Utia La Crusc, one of the oldest huts - it was built in 1718 - close to the Santa Croce church which dates back to 1484 and is a very popular pilgrimage in summer.

FIVE FASHION TIPS

1 34 5 If showing off huge brands is not chic anymore in everyday life, this is even truer on the slopes. Should you be a brand baby, and you find the temptation irresistible, try to keep labels for your after-ski outfits.

Black and white is always a winner and the best choice if you are not comfortable with mixing and matching colours. If you are feeling a bit more adventurous, you can play around with combinations of blue and red, or red, black and white.

Since 2011, all children under 14 must wear a ski-helmet. This new rule was quickly adapted to include all skiers and the ski-helmet is now a fundamental piece of your ski style.

If you have lovely long hair, it is stylish to wear it in either a ponytail low in the neck, or in a soft plait.

In the evening, even if you have booked a fine-dining restaurant, leave your long black sparkling dress and high-heels at home. A creamy cashmere sweater over a pair of dark jeans will be elegant enough, especially when your outfit is complimented by a classy necklace.

What is your really telling you? Sunscreen use is at an all time high, as are new cases of skin cancer, especially in South Africa. If we are all using sunscreen every day, in the city, at the beach, then what is going wrong?

R

ecently very pertinent ne questions were being raised ais around UVA and the effectiveness of sunblock nb which should make uss re-look at how we choose our protection. Most os of us are programmed to lo look at the SPF rating and nothing else. The SPF, orr sun protection factor, relates te solely to the degree of protection a formula provides ov against UVB rays. Th Theese rays are known as the burning rays and they damage am the superficial layers of o the skin and generally result in sunburn. UVA A rays instead, are silent killers. ill They have a longer wavelength, allowing them m to penetrate deeper into the he skin, destroying collagen and d elastin l ti which hi h contribute t ib but to b t sagging i skin ki and d wrinkles, in i kl and d also l triggering ti i cell mutations which mayy initiate skin cancer. While ultraviolet ul (UVB) rays, the main cause of sunburn, ar are the strongest in the summer, me ultraviolet (UVA) rays remain constant throughout ho the year. So even if summer and nd its longer, hotter days reminds min us to seek protection, we should remember that h our skins are really vulnerable ul all year round. Therefore, if you are purchasing ch your daily face cream, m you should always look for one with added UVA and a UVB screening, which w will ensure that protecting your skin from harmful ra rays becomes part of your daily ai routine.

BY MALU LAMBERT

T HE PE R FEC T

What could be more ore perfect than a picnic underneath erneath the blue bowl of the he South African sky? Not just st a summer event, outdoor tdoor td eating can take place ace in any season. Think of a picnic on a mountain top in spring, ring, or on a cloudless winter’ss day when you’ll have the beach ach all to yourself. Even on rainy ainy days, you can spread a picnic ic blanket on your living room floor. oor. The season and occasion aside, e, all you need is a blanket, the right ht spot, t and d some delicious food to have the perfect picnic.

THE SPOT There are many different types of picnics. For a romantic interlude, think of a secluded spot, or one in a botanical garden under an oak tree. These kinds of picnics should always have finger foods like strawberries, dainty sandwiches, and macaroons. For a successful family picnic, go somewhere that the kids can amuse themselves, either with a jungle gym, or plenty of grass to roll around in. Celebratory picnics need a sunset to toast to, so head to the top of a mountain, or perch on a rock on the beach.

THE BASKET The perfect picnic should include rustic bread made for tearing apart with your hands, a gooey cheese, delicate cold meats, and bright bursts of fresh fruit. Stock your basket with picnic treats from gourmet delis, and you can’t go wrong. The goods are often pre-packed which will help if it’s a spontaneous picnic. Whether you go the traditional route with a hand wovenbasket and crockery and cutlery, or if you simply take a backpack filled with paper plates, you’ll need to make sure all your items are wrapped and sealed correctly to avoid having a mess instead of a picnic. Get creative with the packing, for example tie bits of ribbon or twine around the items, and wrap items like bread in colourful paper.

BOOK REVIEW by Malu Lambert

E asy Taking it

Author: Andy Fenner Sunbird Publishers Hard cover, Pages 224 R295.00

Twenty of South Africa’s top chefs and foodies cook for their friends and family in a glorious romp that sees the reader travelling from braai (barbeque) to beautifully set table. The author, Andy Fenner, is a food writer and critic, who cut his teeth blogging about his food experiences under the pseudonym, Jamie Who. The cookbook is unique in that it showcases the chefs cooking at home, ‘offering approachable recipes that are innovative yet honest’. The nitty-gritty of the methodology is buffered by a warm narration, and seasoned with the same brand of cheekiness that made Andy’s blog so wellreceived. Taking It Easy comes across as not just a kitchen aid, but as a generous read too. Peek between its pages for a voyeuristic look into the homes of chefs such as Margot Janse, while her family and friends gather in her back garden for a crayfish braai, and plenty of bubbly. Or discover indigenous West Coast ingredients in Paternoster with Kobus van der Merwe. Readers may even trawl along with Andy and award-winning chef, David Higgs, around Johannesburg’s Neighbourgoods Market. I won’t give the rest away, but know that all 20 chefs and foodies have been given unique and relevant treatment by the author. Andy tells their stories in a way that has never been told before. This is a look behind the starched linen and polished silverware.
