CROQUE MONSIEUR The Croque Monsieur is a French toasted ham and cheese sandwich best shared on a rainy afternoon in Paris. The name derives from croquer (to crunch, bite) and monsieur (sir, mister). This recipe requires ham and cheese to be layered between two slices of bread topped with grated cheese, salt, and pepper. It is then either fried in a pan or baked in an oven until it is nicely browned and forms a crust. When a Croque Monsieur is served with a poached or fried egg on top, it is known as a Croque Madame.

STILL LIFE Still life refers to art that depicts arranged ordinary, inanimate subjects that are natural (food, flowers, animals, etc.) or manufactured (tableware, books, jewelry, etc.). This art form first originated from Ancient Egypt as flat representational paintings. The Egyptians painted food or objects along the walls of tombs, temples, or sarcophagi as an offering to the gods or to accompany the departed into the afterlife. Later, the Ancient Greeks and Romans incorporated similar paintings into various mediums, such as pottery, frescoes, and mosaics. The Greeks and Romans portrayed their subjects with more realism and sophisticated features. For instance, Roman paintings presented their understanding of vanishing points, linear perspective, atmospheric perspective, and foreshortening. Knowledge about Roman paintings came from the many Pompeiian artworks that survived the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. preserved under the ashes. These works also show the concern the Romans had for hospitality through offerings of victuals made for guests in the Still Life with Peaches and Water Jar.
