Letter from the Editors' HOLIDAY 2019

he Holidays are finally here and the fresh crisp fall air has arrived in Southern California. After this past summer, we have to admit the cooler temperatures are a nice change. The last few months were relaxing thanks to a luxurious jaunt to Mexico. We started our fall travel exploring La Paz, Mexico which lived up to the hype. The tropical blue waters were gorgeous and we couldn't believe it took us this long to visit. Cabo San Lucas has always been our go to for a quick getaway but now that we've experienced La Paz for ourselves we will definitely be back. We also spent time this season exploring Asia, from Phuket and Kuala Lumpur to Bali and Singapore, three weeks zipped by full of adventure and culture. A highlight of the trip included a visit to the ever popular Gardens by the Bay, Singapore's fantasy land of high tech Supertrees. We became one with elephants at the Phuket Elephant Sanctuary, Phuket's first and only ethical sanctuary. The sanctuary is a final home for rescued elephants where they roam, bath and socialize freely. It was a truly eye-opening experience and we highly suggest visitors do their research before booking an elephant excursion in Thailand as there are many unethical options unfortunately. After saying goodbye to Phuket we hopped on a plane to Kuala Lumpur. The Malaysian people were some of the nicest we had ever met, the level of service was hard to beat and every need we had was met with infectious smiles grinning ear to ear. We spent one of our days visiting the instafamous Batu Caves and had a very colorful experience. With playful monkeys at every step, it was a magical afternoon we won't soon forget. This season's cover features SoCal native Dinah Jane. For someone that has been in the limelight for a multitude of years with Fifth Harmony, Dinah was humble and down to earth. Our entire team really enjoyed working with her and we are excited to share her story with you. Until next year LATM readers, we hope you enjoyed all the trips we took in 2019 and we look forward to adventuring through 2020 with every one of you!

HOW TO GAIN ACCESS TO The Magic Castle

Photos Courtesy of The Magic Castle

G

etting into the exclusive Magic Castle has always proved a daunting task. You either need to be a member or score an invitation from a member in order to receive a guest pass. While access to The Magic Castle is typically available only to members and invited guests, for the first time through the 2019 calendar year, guests staying at participating Hilton hotels will be able to dine and see world-class illusion at the regal, Edwardian-era mansion in historic Hollywood. For many, this attraction has been at the top of their wishlist with slim chances of ever experiencing it firsthand. But now thanks to a few local Hilton Hotels and a special perk for travelers and locals alike, checking off this bucket list adventure has never been easier. The Magic Castle was built in 1909 by Rollin and Katherine Lane. This private clubhouse is located in the heart of historic Hollywood and is the premier organization dedicated to preserving the history and promoting the art of magic. Its membership includes entertainment’s most pre-eminent magicians and illusionists. A typical evening features magic shows that range from the sleight of hand performed right under your nose to full stage illusions that stun an entire room. The Castle is full of rare memorabilia

and antique posters so plan to spend a few hours and make an evening of it. Start with a cocktail at the Owl Bar then enjoy dining at its finest with menu items ranging from Academy Beef Wellington to Exotic Mushroom & Kabocha Squash in the critically acclaimed full-service dining room. There are a number of unique bars, each with its own personality, making it easy to find just the perfect spot for whatever mood you’re in. Opt for a Manifesto Martini or the Magical Moment for a refreshing sip before you move on to the evening's magic show. You’ll soon understand why your visit will be one of the most amazing evenings you’ve ever experienced. As part of the Hilton/Magic Castle partnership, guests must book at least six weeks in advance of their preferred visit date through Travel.Hilton.com/MagicCastle. From there, participating Hilton representatives will secure guests’ requested reservations at Magic Castle based on availability. Upon check-in at the hotel, guests will receive their invitation cards which must be remitted upon entry to The Magic Castle. In planning for a Hilton/Magic Castle getaway, guests are encouraged to pack dinner attire that meets The Magic Castle’s strict business attire or evening wear dress code which has been enforced since 1963 to capture the elegance of Old Hollywood and the sophistication of fine dining. In addition to dining and viewing a variety of magical styles in multiple theaters, guests can also explore the property and enjoy drinks at one of five bars, including the Owl Bar or the Hat and the Hare Pub. Note: Guests under 21 are only permitted to attend Saturday/Sunday brunches. The Magic Castle opened its doors at 5 p.m. on January 2, 1963. Today, more than five decades later, the Castle remains the mecca of magic as the world-famous home to the Academy of Magical Arts, Inc. and thanks to Hilton now you can be one of its most exclusive guests. While there are a plethora of Hilton options to choose from the brand new H Hotel Los Angeles, Curio Collection by Hilton, provides a luxurious base for your magical night out. Located adjacent to LAX the property offers a range of guest room options with plush bedding, chic furnishings and modern day comforts like complimentary WiFi.

Holiday Proposals Even if it's just for the amount of time it takes to say those big four words: Will. You. Marry. Me. You want it to be somewhere exotic: in a romantic setting, away from family and friends, on a vacation never to forget.

Prince William certainly wanted it that way. He trekked around Kenya carrying Princess Diana's ring in his backpack until he found just the right place to propose to Kate Middleton. In a remote log cabin with no electricity that was accessible only by air or -- bizarrely -- horseback, Will got down on one knee and asked Kate to be the future queen of England. It was the ultimate destination proposal, and it shows William knew exactly what was expected of a 21st-century proposal. For many people, asking the question at the right time and choosing the perfect location to do it at is almost as important as the wedding itself. If you’re planning a proposal and want to be sure that it’s everything your partner has dreamed of, here are some of the world’s most amazing places to do so.

LAKE GENEVA, WISCONSIN

THE MALDIVES

If you want to time your proposal with a snowy Valentine’s Day trip, head to Wisconsin’s Lake Geneva. Visit during the area's Winterfest festival featuring the U.S. National Snow Sculpting Championship and illuminated jawdropping ice castles that are big enough to walk around in. The festival is an ideal place to propose, but to take your proposal up a notch opt for a helicopter ride and fly over the local heart-shaped pond, where you can customize a message written in snow.

The Maldives is known as one of the top honeymoon spots across the world but it's equally suitable for a romantic proposal. The islands' natural beauty and surroundings is enough to ensure a guaranteed yes. These picture-perfect islands are a real-life desert-island fantasy with accommodation that is secluded and guarantees privacy. Each resort is on its own island; there are no strangers, only caring staff and other guests, who value their privacy too. Villas are secluded in lush vegetation or isolated above a lagoon. Gaze from the veranda to a panoramic view of the lagoon lapping the beach and of coconut palms waving on the shore. Even the breeze seems to whisper romance.

PARIS, FRANCE While it may not be unique, it’s still hard to beat a Paris engagement. You might be thinking of heading to the Eiffel Tower, but the City of Light’s ancient bridge, Pont Neuf, which means “New Bridge,” may be even better. Despite its name, this is the oldest standing bridge on the Seine River, and it’s been a popular spot for lovers since it opened more than four centuries ago. If you ask your lover to marry you at dusk, the setting becomes even more spectacular with the fading light casting riverside buildings in beautiful golden hues.

CAPPADOCIA, TURKEY If you’re thinking about a hot-air balloon proposal, one of the world’s best places for a flight is over the otherworldly region of Cappadocia. You’ll get a bird’s eye view of the region’s vast landscape while gliding over its magical "fairy chimneys" otherwise known as tall cone-shaped rock formations. Afterwards, celebrate with a champagne toast upon landing and then head to one of the areas unique hotels for an unforgettable stay.

BRUGES, BELGIUM Bruges offers a number of romantic sites for a proposal. Known as the Venice of the North for its canals, cobblestone streets and medieval buildings every inch of the city provides an opportunity for an insta-worthy proposal. Bursting with charming bridges over crisscrossing canals, the dilemma becomes where to pop the question, but we are sure anywhere in this heartwarming city will guarantee a yes.

THE LONDON EYE, ENGLAND Why not hire out a Valentine’s Cupid Capsule for a London Eye proposal on the Southbank? You’ll have your own private capsule, a bottle of champagne, truffles and a red rose – just be fairly sure she or he are likely to say yes or you’ll be waiting 30 minutes to get out of the capsule.

EUROPE'S SPECTACULAR

Christmas Markets By Katie McCabe

W

ith the holiday season fast approaching, dozens of European cities will soon be setting up their annual Christmas markets. Throughout the months of November and December, thousands of locals and tourists alike flock to the festive cities for the ultimate yuletide experience. Markets are adorned with an abundance of shimmering lights and decor, while carolers sing holiday classics and a fresh scent of homemade gingerbread fills the air. Christmas season is one of the best times to visit Europe, and the six cities below offer the most spectacular holiday celebrations year after year.

46

HOLIDAY 2019

LA TRAVEL

Frankfurt, Germany In terms of visitor numbers and size, the Frankfurt Christmas Market is one of the largest Christmas markets in all of Germany. The elaborate and creative stand decorations, the scenic surroundings on the Römerberg and St Paul's Square and the huge Christmas tree combine to also make it one of Germany's most beautiful. The Christmas market opens in late November and continues until just before Christmas during Advent.

Tallinn, Estonia Frequently voted the #1 Christmas market in all of Europe, Tallinn is the crème de la crème of holiday cheer. A towering spruce stands tall in the center of the main square, a tradition that dates all the way back to 1441 when the city displayed Europe's first Christmas tree. Adults sip hot mulled wine, and nosh on black pudding and sour cabbage (it's better than it sounds), while the children anxiously await the market's main event - Santa's arrival by reindeer-pulled sleigh.

Strasbourg, France What better place to visit during the holiday season than the birthplace of Christmas celebrations. Set up along the gorgeous River Grandelle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Strasbourg's breathtaking Christmas market is known as "The Christmas Capital." Three hundred wooden chalets sell intricate decorations and presents, and local winemakers hand out samples of their top-selling Alsatian wines. Strasbourg truly is a Christmas fairytale come to life.

Prague, Czech Republic Located in the medieval town square, Prague's Christmas market is hands-down the coziest celebration in Europe. The decorated Gothic architecture emanates a warm and inviting atmosphere and

the delectable smell of homemade trdelnik blankets the square. What is a trdelnik you ask? Rolled dough that is grilled over an open flame, covered with cinnamon and sugar, and topped with chocolate, nutella, or nuts. They are a holiday staple in the Czech Republic and once you taste one, you'll understand why.

Dresden, Germany Dresden's Christmas market takes the cake - literally! Since 1434, this German city has had quite a sweet tradition. A cake-like fruit bread known as a 'Christollen', or 'Stollen', is wheeled by horse and carriage to the town's main square where it is divided up and distributed amongst the guests. Last year's cake weighed in at a monumental 7,560 pounds! Wooden huts throughout the market also sell the famed cake-bread, as well as Ore Mountain crafts, Lusatian blue-printed fabrics, Saxon folk art, and Moravian stars. Food and drink vendors sell roasted chestnuts, hot sausages, and aromatic mugs of Glühwein, a warm spiced wine. By the end of the day, your belly and heart will be completely filled with Christmas magic that you'll want to return to Dresden every holiday season.

Trento, Italy Italy is a dreamy destination. So, it's no surprise that its Christmas market is often times described as "heavenly." Located along the cobblestone streets of Trento, between Piazza Fiera and Piazza Cesare Battisti, the Italians put together such an impressive market that it became known as Citta del Natale, or "Christmas town." Visitors sample the local cheeses, prosciutto, and dried orange slices, tour the 13th-century Buonconsiglio Castle, and shop for handmade Italian goods all while in the midst of a stunning Italian Alps backdrop.

5 Top Glamping Spots Around the

Globe By Justin Grigg

48

HOLIDAY 2019

LA TRAVEL

“Glamping” – the portmanteau of “glamour” and “camping” – brings together luxurious accommodations and the beauty of the natural world. While tents often first come to mind, accommodations in a variety of styles are now available at glamping destinations around the world, from domes to yurts to tiny homes. Below are five destinations to give it a try:

1

2

3

FIRESIDE RESORT: By combining the amenities of a luxury boutique hotel with the atmosphere of a wooded campground, Fireside Resort offers Wyoming’s best glamping experience. The lodging options reflect the heritage of the valley’s original homesteader cabins, with cozy fireplaces, full kitchens, private furnished decks, and outdoor fire pits. Situated on wildlife-filled acres where moose, elk, red-tailed hawks, bald eagles and deer roam, Fireside Resort is a mere seven miles from Jackson’s bustling town square.

KACHI LODGE: On Adventure Life’s High Deserts of Bolivia & Chile tour, explore the extreme geography of Lake Titicaca, mountains, canyons, lagoons and the largest salt desert in the world, Salar de Uyuni. Upgrade your trip and stay in a Kachi Lodge dome, offering the comfort of a luxury hotel room and authentic, inventive dining on the salt flats at the foot of Tunupa Volcano, at an altitude of 11,800 feet.

RYABAGA CAMP: The Ponoi River in Russia offers some the world’s best Atlantic salmon fishing. At Ryabaga Camp, guests enjoy their own cabin with queen beds and en suite bathroom with hot water, electricity and internet (email access). Gourmet, chef-prepared meals are served in the “Big Tent,” the camp’s social hub. For a true wilderness location, Ryabaga Camp stands alone with its level of service and accommodations.

4

KESTREL CAMP:

5

SOSSUS UNDER CANVAS:

The American Prairie Reserve in Montana is piecing together what will be the largest nature reserve in the lower 48 states, totaling 3.5 million acres. APR’s Kestrel Camp offers five yurt-style luxury suites set around a central lounge and dining room serving chef-prepared meals, as well as a safari-style experience with special access to tour the reserve’s ecosystem with personal naturalists.

On Adventure Life’s Namibia Under Canvas tour, climb the sand dunes of Sossusvlei, explore the coastal city of Swakopmund, marvel at the natural wonders of Damaraland and search for wildlife in Etosha National Park. Return each night to a camp like Sossus Under Canvas, where tents are protected from the elements by natural stone walls and roofs built from recycled oil drums, and furnishings are made of recycled metal and wood. The camp is virtually invisible from any distance has a low environmental footprint and after distance.

Editors' Pick: Living the La Paz Lifestyle

The lifelong search is ever continuing, spanning the globe for places less traveled that are raw yet filled with adventure, culture and beauty. La Paz, Mexico fits perfectly into this category; a place that is still virtually unknown on a global traveling scene but one that has so much to offer for the ideal Mexican getaway. Often compared to its close neighbor Cabo San Lucas (which is only a 2-hour drive away) it is quite easy to say the two could not be any more different. What separates the two destinations is the overall reason people travel there. It is quite well known that Cabo San Lucas has been put on the map as one of Mexico's top party destinations whereas La Paz is more for the adventure-seeking traveler that enjoys a road less traveled. Since many people have not set their sights on La Paz as of yet there are few luxury accommodations to choose from but that is quite alright as Puerta Cortés has everything you could ever need in a luxurious vacation destination. Puerta Cortés Just a mere 5-minute drive from downtown La Paz and you have reached Puerta Cortés, a residential and vacation paradise equipped with everything you could ever need once you pass through the gates. Featuring a luxurious collection of oceanfront and hillside residences between the two communities VistaMar and Los Colinas you will find your Mexican getaway to be everything you could have ever dreamed of. The entire property covers an incredible amount of land from the world-class marina situated on the Sea of Cortez to the hillside with panoramic views spanning as far as the eye can see.

Beginning the week of October 21, select bourbon fans of legal drinking age will be able to book a limited number of stays at the Jim Beam® American Stillhouse, where they will live, eat and even sleep like the seven generations of Master Distillers, in a historic and charming Kentucky house overlooking nearby Everbach Lake on the distillery grounds. "We like to say that anyone who visits us comes as friends and leaves as family, so we're thrilled to welcome our extended family for some bourbon and Kentucky hospitality." Built in 1919 with three bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms, the distillery's rustic house comes equipped with a fully-stocked bar featuring premium Jim Beam bourbons, fireplace, backyard with cowboy cauldrons and fishing docks. Once guests have learned how the world's #1 bourbon is crafted, they can enjoy the other elements of the Stillhouse, including an original staircase from the Jim Beam distillery circa Prohibition, a bourbon bar with seasonal cocktails and dinner at Fred's Smokehouse, which serves bourbon BBQ selections that are inspired by Beam family recipes. The Wine & Nature Week is an invitation to enjoy Patagonia Camp, as well as La Casona. The program gives the option to stay three or four nights at Patagonia Camp and two nights at La Casona, as well as transfers, tickets to Torres del Paine National Park, a guided tour in the Vina Matetic Winery, and guided outdoor excursions like horseback riding, cycling, or hiking in Vina Matetic. Also, for traveling gourmands, the restaurant at Patagonia Camp is a sight to behold, with panoramic windows that gaze out over the Paine Massif and the lake. The kitchen brings together the best of Patagonia's local resources to create fresh, healthy, delicious meals, like salmon, lamb, crab, and vegetables from the region. All of this is, of course, paired with local wines from Vina Matetic, or a cocktail created by the hotel's dedicated and talented barman. There’s no better place to reconnect with friends than in the cozy restaurant over a bottle of wine and a locally sourced meal.

Plans are already on their way for September 2020. The program consisted of two daily sessions: one in the morning before leaving to discover the Torres del Paine park, and the other in the afternoon to channel all the experiences from the day. The allinclusive program also included breakfast, lunch, and a three-course dinner with vegetarian, vegan, or glutenfree options.

In to Africa The

WILD LUXURY By Susan Watkins

Our little plane gently bumped down on the short red dirt strip in the middle of the African Bush. A peek out the window of the plane showed an expansive plain, dotted with shrubs and acacia trees, a few wildebeest and antelope grazing in the distance. As we disembarked, we were met by our Mara Bushtops hosts. Ranger Charles and Spotter Alfred, dressed in the Masai regalia of beaded scarlet, were here to introduce us to the mystique of Kenya. Nearby was the luxury landcruiser that was to become our vehicle for adventure over the next few days. Spread out for us was a welcome Kenyan aperitif - tea, biscuits and Amarula, a creamy liqueur made from the fruit of the elephant tree. Announcing with big smiles “Welcome to Mara!”, they toasted our arrival and we were on our way, bouncing over the jutted road toward the stunning luxury camp that is Mara Bushtops. Luxury Tents ‘Wild luxury’ is the phrase that is coined for a stay at Mara Bushtops, and a place has never been more aptly named. We were escorted by our butler to the Lion Tent, our home for the next four days. Boasting a wide wooden outdoor deck with breathtaking panoramic views, the tent featured a gigantic bed, rich teak furniture, a telescope, photographs of lions, tribal masks, bowls of fresh roses, a beautiful bathroom, an outdoor shower and hot tub. A Masai spear placed at the outdoor entrance to the tent was our “Do not Disturb” sign, and the tent was privately situated in such a way that we could see no neighbors. At Mara Bushtops, time seems to stand still. Here, nothing is rushed. You’re invited to sit back in the quiet and experience the wonder of Kenya as it unfolds before you. On our verandah we could lounge in comfort, drink in hand, gazing out at the tableau as our very own private safari unfolded right in front of us. The centerpiece of the resort is a natural salt lick, a popular gathering place for all manner of wildlife. Elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffalo, antelope and warthogs come here to absorb vital minerals and nutrients needed for their growth and healthy bones. The animals clearly love it here, lingering for long periods of time. I love it here too. I feel like the King of the Jungle. The Conservancy In the late afternoon, after we had enjoyed a restorative 60

massage at the resort’s beautiful Spa Village, we were taken under the care of our able Ranger Charles and Spotter Alfred for our first game drive. As we explored the large private conservancy on which Mara Bushtops is located, our guides told us about the Conservancy, which was created together with the local land owners in mutual cooperation with the village elders. In the Conservancy, Masai herds and other protected wildlife may freely coexist - at the same time guests of Mara Bushtops can enjoy the unparalleled freedom, beauty and unique experiences not available in the national reserve - such as walking safaris and night game drives. The Conservancy is abundant with wildlife. Before long, we met a family of elephants crashing through the jungle, literally breaking down trees and anything else that lay in their path. Charles turned off the engine and we sat for several minutes, enthralled as the bull, cow and baby calf went about their business, paying no mind to us. They are magnificent creatures.

Romance Sunset found us enjoying one of our favorite Mara Bushtops’ activities - the Sundowner. As we perched in our camp chairs on a rolling hill looking over the expansive terrain, a fire crackled before us. Wrapped up for warmth in colorful red plaid Masai blankets and sipping our gin and tonics, we listened to the quiet and watched as the wild life paraded before us, silhouetted against the setting sun - a simply magical experience. Later that evening, we enjoyed an impressive gourmet dinner, preceded by the resort’s whimsical cocktail of the day and a visit to the ample wine cellar. The Mara Bushtop Chef came personally to our table to greet us and tell us about his special entree of the day. Every dish that came out of the kitchen was exceptional and artfully presented. All is ready for a dreamy night in our tent, which has been zipped up for the night. Our sweeping view is still visible through the tent netting, the lanterns flicker with low light, and hot water bottles are thoughtfully tucked under our covers. We lie in the safety of our tent, gazing out at the inky night sky and listening to the lions roar and the call of the wildlife all around us. It’s the end of a spellbinding day. Game Drives Clearly, the highlights of activities at Mara Bushtops are the game drives. Our custom designed safari landcruiser was equipped with every comfort, stocked with our favorite beverages, wi-fi, and blankets for chilly mornings. Our knowledgeable guides regaled us with stories and educated us on every imaginable piece of wildlife we saw, truly opening up a whole new world for us. They were our eyes and ears, with Alfred, our sharp-eyed Masai spotter impressively locating game from long distances and Charles getting us as close to the action as possible. We experienced all of the game drives Mara Bushtops offered - the heart-stopping night drive through the sleeping jungle as nocturnal

creatures roamed, the early morning drive where we encountered lions and cheetahs and feasted on Mara Bushtops’ famous ‘Bush Breakfast’, and the thrill-of-a-lifetime all day game drive. Masai Mara Our all day game drive in Masai Mara was spectacular beyond words. We saw four of the “Big Five” most sought-after safari sightings - the elephant, lion, leopard, and cape buffalo. Only the elusive rhino was missing, and we are told that it is sadly nearly extinct in Kenya due to poachers. Joining the ”Big Five” in treating us to one spectacle after another were armies of wildebeest and zebra, together with giraffes, jackals, hyenas, warthogs, vultures, hippos, elan, topi, impala, Thompson gazelles, and cheetahs. Nobody could prepare me for the awe of watching a lioness and her litter of playful newborn baby cubs, leopards stealthily draped across the tree limbs, or cheetah siblings wrestling in the tall yellow grasses. Truly, in their natural habitat all of these creatures are beautiful. Having arrived just in time for the phenomenon of the annual Great Migration from the Serengeti, we breathlessly watched as thousands of wildebeest traversed the Mara River en masse, wildly leaping into the water, swimming across and clambering up the opposite riverbank, joining other wildebeest and zebra traveling together as far as the eye can see. Our guides proclaimed, “God is smiling on you! Many never get to see this, but today, you have seen.” At lunchtime, Charles and Alfred spread out a meal fit for a Chief and set a table for two, complete with tablecloth and cloth napkins. We looked out over the savannah dotted with acacia trees and low bushes - seeing first hand why this place is called Mara, which means ‘spotted place’. Clouds hovered so low on the horizon we could almost touch them. The mountain called the Sleeping Warrior lay nearby. We were the only people in sight and it was ethereally quiet. There never was a more delightful setting for lunch together. As if things couldn’t get any better, upon our late afternoon return to the camp, we found that our butler had filled the hot tub on our tent’s verandah with hot bubbly water and rose petals. Our favorite drinks were on ice tableside - a welcome sight after a full day in the bush. Soaking away the dust of the day, we gave ourselves into the luxury of it all and marveled together about everything we had seen. It’s All Here - Hakuna Matata! • The staff at Mara Bushtops creates exclusive experiences that guests won’t ever forget. World-class service is a hallmark of this luxury camp - we got the feeling that every single person on the staff is passionate about making the guests’ pleasure their business. From 24 hour personal butler service, to attentive dining room staff, front desk, spa personnel, rangers and spotters, no request is too small in their friendly and capable hands. • This all-inclusive resort features everything you’ll want in the way of dining. The menu is varied and creative, and the list of included wine and cocktails extensive. Mara Bushtops’ Chef consistently served up the most amazing and delicious creations the entire time we were there. • The Amani Spa Village features a gorgeous starlight pool, with stars lighting the floor at night to recreate Orion constellation, expert massage therapists, a gym, sauna and steam room. Especially unique is the location - it’s not everywhere that you can have a massage or a swim with a family of giraffes looking on!

hemingway's nairobi: By: Susan Watkins Step through the wide portico and into the stunning marbled lobby of Hemingways Nairobi and you’ll think you’ve been transported to another era. Rattan ceiling fans, potted palms, aviation and safarithemed décor all call to mind the glamorous days of the early 20th century when Kenya was a British colony and East African safaris were all the rage. wall of our room is a colorful mural of coral and flame, displaying Kenya’s signature Acacia tree at sunset, silhouetted against the hills. Another wall is a bank of curved glass, leading out to our terrace. From there, we can take in the sweeping view of wide green lawns and flowering frangipani set against “The Green Hills of Africa”, as once defined by Hemingway himself, who loved this land. Adjacent to the bedroom is a massive bathroom with a deep porcelain tub, separate sinks, a shower with rain forest settings, and a walk-in teak wood closet. The generously-sized suites pay homage to some of Kenya’s most noteworthy visitors, adventurers and writers, personalizing each room with their memorabilia. A stroll through the open-air corridors of the hotel reveal suites named after Ernest Hemingway, Karen Blixen, of “Out of Africa” fame, her lover Denys Finch-Hatton, Winston Churchill and even Marilyn Monroe.

Butler Service From the moment of arrival, guests are made to feel valued. The service is impeccable as well as cordial. The only hotel in Nairobi which offers personal butler service, Hemingways takes the art of hospitality to a new level. Waist-coated personal butlers are always there to provide whatever you need. Your butler also acts as your personal concierge and is knowledgeable about arranging local transport, tours, dinner reservations or whatever else you may require during your stay. The doormen, who provide the first welcome you receive at the hotel, are engaging young men with extraordinary personalities. One evening as we came into the lobby entrance for dinner, we were welcomed by one such youth, and engaged in a short but friendly conversation. Very early the next morning we saw him at his post again and joked, “Are you still here?” He grinned a big white smile and said “I slept in my shoes!”

Cocktails & Cuisine A beautiful spot in the hotel is the handsome sunset bar, where you can sip your cocktails on the verandah in big elephant-shaped wicker chairs overlooking the lawns. On cooler evenings, you might choose to relax inside, where soft chocolate leather sofas, arranged in intimate groupings under warm lighting provide the ambience of a sophisticated country home. The Brasserie, Hemingways’ on-site restaurant, serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Like the bar, seating is available inside, or on the terrace

overlooking the garden and fountains. The Brasserie’s breakfast buffet is as bountiful as it is elegant, offering fresh-out-of-the-oven pastries, luscious tropical fruits and juices, and breakfast favorites from the buffet and/or menu. The walls of the dining room are creatively emblazoned with famous quotes about Kenya, my favorite of which is “You know you are truly alive when you are living among lions.” (Karen Blixen)

Near Hemingways Hemingways is the discerning traveler’s ideal location to use as a home base for visiting Nairobi sites such as the Karen Blixen House and Museum, Nairobi National Park and the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. Hopefully, a safari is also on your Kenya itinerary. If so, Hemingways is the perfect place to relax either before or after your safari, being just a few minutes away by the hotel’s car from both the international Kenyatta Airport and the regional Wilson Airport. 65

Uluwatu:

A Different Side of Bali Photos Courtesy of Six Senses Hotels Resorts Spas

Deemed the nicest area in all of Bali, Uluwatu is the name of a famous Balinese temple perched on a cliff on the southwest tip of the Bukit Peninsula. Home to hard to reach beaches, world-class surfing and a plethora of amazing resorts Uluwatu is often overlooked by those Pinterest fans heading straight for instaworthy Ubud. It may just be a well kept secret and hopefully it stays that way.

Uluwatu has so many great beach options - good for swimming, surfing or lounging in the sand. Due to the fact that tourism is such a large part of the economy, hotels and villages provide daily clean up and grooming of the area's beaches. Palm trees, wild mangroves, fragrant trees and orchids rest amidst a turquoise blue ocean backdrop and miles of soft sand. Swimming here is great when the currents and waves are low but take caution, some beaches are too rough and should be left to the surfing community. Uluwatu is known to be a surfers dream, as this is the home of some of the areas most infamous surf breaks. Take note that these swells are for experts only, as the waves in some areas can be huge and the shoreline incredibly rocky. When choosing a place to stay the options are endless but now that Six Senses has popped up it has become the obvious choice for those looking to soak up all that nature has to offer. Perched on top of the cliffs at the southernmost tip of Bali and sharing dramatic views of the Indian Ocean with the island’s famed Uluwatu Temple, Bali's only green resort is elegant and opulent, while presenting a sense of calm and serenity. Natural vegetation and lush landscaping provide a sense of privacy, seclusion and sustainability, with cleverly-designed roofs to keep you naturally cool. Here, tradition mixes with beautiful beaches, great surf breaks and an eclectic wellness and dining scene. Upon arrival you are greeted with a spectacular panoramic view of the entire resort overlooking the ocean. The staff will quickly check you in and have you whisked away to your guest quarters in no time. The layout of the property is easy to navigate by foot but there are golf carts and staff members ready at any second to drive you wherever you like within the grounds. In the morning hours try a meditation session at the spa and start your day in the right direction before heading for a hearty breakfast at Rocka. If you prefer to spend the morning sleeping late in the comforts of your villa you can request breakfast in bed but when visiting Bali it is only appropriate to order a floating breakfast. Yes, you heard that right guests can enjoy breakfast in their pool. Served in a heart shaped floating basket, this breakfast comes with all the fixings from coffee and tea, your choice of eggs, a selection of freshly baked pastry and bread, a fruit platter, homemade yogurt and juice. During the day lounge around in the comfort of your pool villa or sign up for an on property cooking class to learn a few new Balinese recipes to try at home. Once the sun starts to set a visit to Six Senses Spa is a great way to relax. Choose traditional Balinese treatments with a modern twist alongside more in-depth wellness programs focused on cleansing, sleep or fitness. The resort's signature holistic massage provides a fully personalized treatment based on each guest’s needs and desired results. It uses a combination of flowing, soothing, rhythmical and medium pressure movements on the specified areas of concern to relieve muscle tension and to bring about a balanced, calm and stress-free state of being. For an evening under the stars, dinner at The Cliff Bar cannot be missed. From sandwiches to sushi this dining experience combines Southeast Asian spices with traditional items and a natural ambiance that showcases a breath of fresh air on the deck overlooking the ocean. In the evenings visitors come from near and far to witness the infamous Kecak Fire Dance. The performance is based on a traditional Balinese ritual but was actually created by a German man in the 1930s and based on the famous epic Hindu story of the Ramayana. Despite it being a musical show, no instruments are used only the voices and rhythm of the Balinese men carry the presentation, and expressively tell the story. WINE ALONG THE RHINE: Germany's vineyards are not just about Riesling By: Melissa Curtin

Perched above the vineyards on an angular slope where one wrong step could topple you down the grapevine hillside, Switzerland and France are in view below the outstretched billowing clouds. Basel is less than a mile away from this German winery, Weingut Schneider, operated by two young brothers in Weil am Rhein. (In Germany, Weingut means winery). Down below is a fairytale village with no littering or garbage to be found. Flowers bulge over each windowsill, hedges are neatly trimmed, old welcoming shutters burst in various colors, and seriously, licking the street seems possible. It could be a scene out of Hansel and Gretel or perhaps that Disneyland teacup ride from the 1980s where the tune hums “It’s a small world after all.” But here in the southwestern wine-growing region of Baden, the famed white grape variety Riesling is not in my hand, but instead, a glass of light ruby red Spätburgunder, Germany’s Pinot Noir. After France and the USA, Germany is the third-largest producer worldwide of Pinot Noir.

Within the last twenty years, Pinot Noir makes up over a third of Germany’s sales thanks to domestic demand. Climate change has been part of this positive impact as premium red wines can be made from grapes that once couldn’t even grow. Shifting weather has allowed for greater variety in more places and now German Rieslings and Pinot Noirs are more fullflavored. Exceptional rose and dry sparkling wines can easily be found too, among the 135 varietals. Due to varying climatic conditions and diverse geology along with passionate winegrowers and their methods of viticulture and winemaking, Germany’s 13 wine growing regions dotted with charming medieval villages, countless estates, and castles - are not to be missed. Don’t expect gimmicky commercialized wine rooms selling souvenirs. Germany’s rustic wineries tend to not charge a fee for a tasting; while a bottle is often expected to be purchased, and with most costing around 8-10 euros, you may find yourself stuffing your suitcase with extras.

TASTE GERMANY’S KNOCK-OUT WINES BY EXPLORING THESE 3 LESSER-KNOWN WINE REGIONS: Baden In the warmest and sunniest wine region (comparable in climate to France’s Loire Valley), most of Baden’s vineyards lie along a 250-mile stretch of land sandwiched between the Black Forest and the Rhine. There is almost as much land planted here with Pinot as all of New Zealand. Expect a wide range of grapes and styles due to the diversity of soil types and microclimates. Coming from Frankfurt or Stuttgart, head south towards Weingut Schloss Neuweier in Baden-Baden where the wine barrels come with names like Pura Vida and Eye of the Tiger. Good juju or words reflect the love put into each barrel. Scale the steep vineyards or just admire the glorious Neuweier Castle before spending a night in one of their fortress suites. Relish Grand Cru wines dating back to Queen Victoria, sparkling wines, or a nonalcoholic grape ginger juice. It may be difficult not to think of a Wes Anderson film upon arrival at Hotel Hirschen in Lehen, but wake up for an extraordinary breakfast bar with make-your-own squeezed juices, pastries, cheese, fruits, eggs, and meats. Spend a night here just to dine at Restaurant Hirschen serving beef cheek, lobster soup, wiener schnitzel, pillows Maultaschen (ravioli) with chanterelles, and Black Forest ice cream dessert with tart cherries, all paired nicely with a volcanic grown Rosé or Kirchberg Spätburgunder GG from Weingut Salway. At Weingut Ziereisen, jovial winemaker Hanspeter Ziereisen exclaims “Work dirty in the cellar with clean grapes” as we

admire steep sloping vineyards of Jurassic limestone with Basel and the snow-covered Alps in the distance before going down under. In the wine cellar cave guests are greeted by overhead sound art (similar to a xylophone on bits of old wine barrels) created by German-born kinetic sculptor Trimpin. Home to 60-year-old vines, the Ziereisen’s have been based in the village even longer - since 1734. Admire the engraved oak barrels from around this same period at their charming winery dripping with pumpkins, empty wine bottles, and hanging flowers. Don’t expect Riesling here. While they experiment with Syrah, they also grow Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay, but their passionate local specialties are the Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) and Gutedel (ancient white grape) with wines maturing up to 24 months in the barrel and another 9 months in the bottle. Ask about the nonalcoholic grape spritz and the German-style focaccia bread brought by Italian railroad workers hundreds of years ago. Sip a 2015 Pinot Noir, a 2016 Chardonnay (new to the region in the last 25 years), or the local specialties, such as the 2015/2016 Gutedel and 2016 Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris). Two young brothers responsible for the luscious wines at Weingut Schneider have had family ties to the area since 1492. Savor a complex Pinot or Gutedel with a loaf of bread or spiral up atop the vineyards for a dynamic sunset with Switzerland and France in view. Arrange for a jeep ride and healthy picnic lunch amongst the vines in their elegant open-air cottage above the town. No trip is complete without a stop in the captivating pictureperfect colorful village of Burkheim set atop volcanic hills. Get lost. Find the Corkscrew Museum and meander the vineyards hugging town with a ruined 13th-century castle (now used for weddings). Arrange for a tasting in advance at Weingut

steak with potatoes, cooked cheese, and homemade sausage in this timbered cottage with a wine bar and beer garden. Select a local wine from Hanno Rothweiler Winery or Simon Bürkel Winery.

In Durbach’s golden village, there are twelve wineries. At Weingut Schloss Ortenberg the winemaker reminds us that “great varietals do not have a nationality.” Due to global warming, Cabernet, Merlot, and Syrah (and even Tempranillo) can now be found in Baden. Cold nights and warm days produce great wines. Founded in 1500 and merged with the famous research estate, sample wines high above the vineyard on their grand deck while admiring Vosges and Alsace. Inquire about their wine hikes and monthly parties. Consider dining and staying overnight nearby at Hotel Zur Linde where the hotel’s restaurant offers freshly prepared dishes with generous portions on a garden terrace.

At Weingut Beurer, winemaker and former BMX bike racer Jochen Beurer wears a shirt that reads “In Riesling We Trust.” His biodynamic wines are fermented naturally. Champion of historic grape varieties and known for his pure intense dry Rieslings, he makes special wine lines for organic markets with fun labels, such as Bacchanal Wines in New Orleans and Roberta’s (NY and LA). “A good wine can really do magic,” Beurer shares as he explains how deeply rooted wine is in German culture. Check out his 2016 bottle of Nothing with the label of a guy performing the bike jump trick “Nothing” where arms and legs are spread wide while the rider is in mid-air before landing back on the bike. Other favorite wines to try include the 2017 Riesling Kieselsanstein and the 2018 Riesling Trocken.

Württemberg A rural, hilly region adjacent to Baden, red wine predominates, especially crisp, light Trollinger (often consumed with cold cuts) dubbed the national drink of the region. Other red wines with more color, body, and substance include the Schwarzriesling (Pinot Meunier) and Lemberger, and Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir). Riesling is the most important white variety. Most vineyards in Württemberg deliver their grapes to more than 50 cooperatives, which sell about 80% of all Württemberg wines.

Zum Hirschen is one of several Michelin star restaurants in the Fellbach area outside of Stuttgart. An extraordinary regional menu boasts beef tartare with truffles, assorted veggies with goat cheese, and Pasta Pillows Maultaschen with chanterelles, paired well with a 2018 Rose or a 2017 Simonroth Spätburgunder from Weingut Schnaitmann. Pfalz

For 500 years, Christian Dautel’s family has been growing grapes in the region, hugging the Ahr and Neckar Rivers, just across the border from Alsace, where the young winemaker doesn’t take a formulaic approach but considers the feeling for each site and variety. Steep vertical almost 70-degree slopes require sturdy workers and harvester machines at Weingut Dautel. Savor a wine tasting here with sparkling wine, Steingruben (Pinot Noir) or a Weissburgunder.

At the corner of Germany, the Pfalz area is sunny and dry. The red and yellow variegated weathered sandstone soils grow exceptional Rieslings. Vineyards bask in the milky-mild southern light, while figs, kiwis, almond blossoms, and chestnuts bloom. No wonder the Romans and their vines felt at home here thousands of years ago. It is the fastest growing wine region, the second-largest German region (after Mosel) in acreage producing Riesling in the world, and the area flourishes with other white grape varieties, while red wine is on the rise.

A traditional lunch can be found at Restaurant Alte Dorfmühle Auerbach in Bensheim, a short detour from Heidelberg, Manheim, or Frankfurt. Use your Google Translate app to read the ever-changing in-season menu posted on a board, and soon enough, you will be able to comprehend most German menus. Try schnitzel, pork

In the fall, you may find a walnut or apricot amongst the grapes or ambitious young winemaker Sven at Weingut Klundt making and selling wine with sustainable practices. In this petite wine room, savor a traditional Riesling, sparkling Extra Brut, or Pinot Noir Obsession. Stop for dinner in

OBERAMMERGAU IN 2020

The attractive village of Oberammergau, at first glance, appears like the inspiration for an esteemed museum painting: brilliant shades of nature’s radiance and robust scraps of green tangle across the villagescape in a clear challenge to the skill of an artist’s brush. The all-weather cobbled walkways link detailed historic medieval surroundings and a natural environment that is unrivaled in this part of Europe. Tucked into a narrow mountain valley in the western foothills of the Bavarian Alps 42 miles southwest of Munich, the village of Oberammergau, circa 1150, will open its arms in 2020 to thousands of visitors from throughout the world. Every ten years when the calendar falls on decimal years the village residents perform the historic Oberammergau Passion Play in gratitude for the demise of the Black Plague that in

78

1633 ravaged the village and, in the years before, a great extent of Asia and Europe as well. The Black Death is thought by countless historians to have originated in Central Asia traveling along the Silk Road to Crimea, carried by bacteria in fleas living on rats that then hooked a ride on merchant ships. The most destructive and overwhelming pestilence in human history resulting in the deaths of an estimated 75 to 200 million people, the Plague is extremely contagious spreading in the air or by flea bite or through contact with someone stricken. It is estimated to have killed 30% to 60% of Europe’s population, betraying itself by the emergence of tumors, causing death within two to seven days from the initial infection.

In 1633 the plague mauled Oberammergau and, in desperation, the village counselors pledged to perform a Passion Play immediately, and every ten years forever after, if there were no more victims. The epidemic passed and in 1634 Oberammergau honored their oath and performed the Passion Play for the first time at the cemetery on the still-fresh graves of the plague victims. The oldest existing manuscript of the Passion Play text dates from circa 1662/1664 and today’s version remains reasonably close to that original, with just a few modern touches. More than half a million visitors from around the world enjoyed the play in 2010 and will again when, in 2020, the O rolls around on the calendar once more. Incredibly, some 2,300 Oberammergau villagers from a population of 5,000 are involved in the play, all as volunteers. A local law maintains that all performers, the actors, chorus, 65-member orchestra, and ushers, must have either been born in Oberammergau or have lived there for 20 years. Play Director, Christian Stuckl, born in Oberammergau in 1961, who has a long list of play production credits to his name, including Shakespeare, said, “Everyone that has passion in their lives can share the passion with the performing villagers, the music, the clothing, the setting, and the medieval history.” The 4,500 seat Passion Play Theatre found in the center of the village was well designed for a play of this magnitude with an open-air stage, excellent acoustics, and decent views from the tiered seating. Though the production is all-volunteer, the play is far from amateur with a hard-working Musical Director and intense auditions for the major speaking parts. For the people born and raised here, this is the heart and soul of Bavaria. Skiers dominate in winter and, during the long days of summer, nature is at its best with thick stands of trees, flowers glowing with color, and the mighty 10,000-foot peaks of the Ammergau Alps challenging hikers, climbers and cyclists to explore

its pathways. The chance to dine al fresco with a tumbler of chilled Chianti, listen to live accordion music, enjoy top notch service from attendants dressed in classic Bavaria garb, and revel in the glories of nature all around is what makes the adventure of travel so rewarding. The village, bordered by forests of Linden trees, pines, and hard woods, is the perfect place for a collection of 50 world-class wood carvers, gifted artists all, who with sharpened chisels in hand will create special requests for guests. Wood carving originated here in the 16th century and flourishes today in a celebrated carving school. An exquisite collection of hand-crafted carvings dating from the 17th century to the present can be enjoyed at the Oberammergau Museum. The attractive museum which opened in 1910 is noted among the top cultural museums in Bavaria. Here one can spend hours consuming the village history from the Romans in Oberammergau to the Passion Play, a medley of present-day films, and ongoing special exhibits. A splendid 2020 travel tour could begin in Munich with visits along the trail at the hamlet of Wies and the Pilgrimage Church, an oval rococo Bavarian church, circa 1740, a UNESCO site experienced by millions of visitors yearly. Near Oberammergau is the Ettal Abbey, a Benedictine Monastery, 1330, shared by a sizeable number of monks. The Abbey, which also has a brewery, offers another opportunity to step back in time and is a leading Bavarian attraction, one of many in this land of surprises. When You Go The Passion Play is performed May 16th to October 4th 2020, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, fee E30 to 180. Check for guided tour offerings such as CroisiEurope’s 2020 European River Cruise Schedule which includes Oberammergau’s Passion Play. n 2008, UNESCO recognized the importance of Día de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) by adding the holiday to its list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. As practiced by the indigenous communities of Mexico, el Día de los Muertos commemorates the transitory return to Earth of deceased relatives and loved ones. The festivities take place each year at the end of October to the beginning of November. From quiet candlelit cemeteries to experience the ancestral tradition to big parades and concerts, there are many intriguing things to do for Day of the Dead. Here are some ways to celebrate this festive holiday throughout Mexico including a Dia de Los Muertos womenonly group trip in Mexico City to a special Dia de Los Muertos tarot card reading dinner in San Miguel de Allende and more. And if you can’t make the festivities this year, it’s never too early to plan ahead for 2020! Mexico City

The Day of the Dead festivities begin in Mexico City on the Saturday before Dia de Los Muertos as the parade rolls through the capital. The night of October 31st kicks off a 3-day string of Day of the Dead activities in Mexico City. Though you can catch the party in Zocalo, you’ll find a far more authentic celebration southeast of the city center, in San Andrew Mixquic. The ex-convent and church bedecks its main cemetery with thousands of candles and marigolds, and midnight processions bring thousands of capitalinos to the altar-lined streets. The Day of the Dead parade on November 2nd in Mexico City is actually a relatively new tradition, as it began in 2016. The parade is said to have been inspired by the 2015 James Bond film, Spectre. In the movie, the opening scene shows Daniel Craig as James Bond at a Day of the Dead parade in Mexico City. Where to Stay

In celebration of Dia de Los Muertos, the chef will bake the traditional holiday bread for breakfast that week – Pan de Muertos or “bread of the dead”, a slightly sweet, brioche-like bread covered with orange blossom water and anise seeds. A beautiful marigold altar will be put up in honor of Ignacia. A "calaverita" (skull shaped candy) will be waiting for guests in their suites who check-in on October 31s, November 1st and 2nd. Guests can enjoy calabaza en tacha, a typical Dia de los Muertos candied pumpkin. For the daily cocktail hour in the garden, the chef will create cocktails with the flavors of this festive holiday, including anise and pumpkin. What to Eat Foodies will love Eat Like a Local Mexico City’s special Dia de Los Muertos food tour where founder and sustainable tourism expert Rocio Vazquez Landeta shares her personal approach to the celebration. Visit Rocio’s home, a late 1800 house in Roma Norte to celebrate with mezcal cocktails and snacks while setting up the altar on the rooftop. Sharing childhood memories and the meaning of each item at the altar, Rocio invites guests to join her celebration to honor the dead. San Miguel de Allende While most towns have at least a few processions for Day of the Dead, San Miguel de Allende hosts the colorful 5-day La Calaca Festival. The main attraction is the annual Catrinas Parade which draws crowds from near and far. The highlight of the parade is the towering Catrina and Catrine puppets. But it doesn’t stop there. Professional makeup artists are plentiful and can be hired beforehand to paint your face into a beautiful skull, and feel free to get decked out from head to toe as there will be a costume contest. But how do you choose a good one? Whether you want to believe it or not, many of the elephants are mistreated and you really need to research where to go in order to make sure you are not contributing to their mishandling. The Phuket Elephant Sanctuary is a final home for retired working elephants, set on 30 acres of lush tropical jungle. Observe how elephants rehabilitate into forest life after decades of abuse, and experience how incredible the largest land mammal on earth is during a day at Phukets very first ethical sanctuary. It is difficult for me to say which sanctuaries to stay away from. While the majority of sanctuaries in Thailand offer better conditions than riding camps, shows and logging camps the name “sanctuary" can still vary widely and is not regulated. Below are some questions / guidelines to help identify which sanctuary is really committed to the elephants’ wellbeing: • Does the camp own or rent the elephants? If they own the elephants they are committed to providing a final home. If they are rented this is not guaranteed. • Does the camp owner own other elephant camps that use less ethical approaches? • How much interaction is allowed between elephants and visitors? Ideally none. • How are elephants kept at night? Do they have space to roam freely, are they in an enclosure, or are they chained? • Does the camp provide professional veterinary care? While visiting another "sanctuary" which will remain nameless we asked these questions and found the caretakers squirming their way out of answering us truthfully. It is really unfortunate that these practices and the abuse is still taking place today but you can guarantee a visit to Phuket Elephant Sanctuary is contributing to the greater good. During your visit you will see it in the elephants eyes, they are happy here. hours 48 in KL

Most of you may not know this but Kuala Lumpur is one of the most electric cities we've been to. There is a magnetic force that attracts travelers worldwide year after year and we had to check it out to see what all the buzz is about. Like most Asian capital cities a quick 48 hour trip can be a whirlwind but take it from us two days in KL will be quite the eye opening experience to say the least. Malaysia's capital city has everything you could ever want for an action packed weekend; incredibly riveting history, a happening foodie scene, colorful attractions and of course luxury accommodations to give you the ultimate home base.

For a luxurious stay in the heart of the city look no further than The Ritz-Carlton. Yes in central KL you will find a wide array of luxury accommodations but when the smoke clears there can only be one left standing and trust us when we tell you we have a clear winner. For over 18 years, The Ritz-Carlton, Kuala Lumpur has been a luxurious home away from home for thousands of well-heeled guests from all over the world, including members of royal families, international celebrities, corporate leaders and heads of state. Set in the heart of Kuala Lumpur and steps away from the bustle, upscale boutiques and skyscrapers of the city’s Golden Triangle, the hotel has long commanded an enviable address.

The city's famed history is a fascinating story in itself, one that draws tourists from all over the globe. Settled in 1857 by an expedition of 87 Chinese miners in search of valuable tin, Kuala Lumpur remains to this day the financial focal point of Malaysia. Now home to nearly one and a half million people, the city still beckons to those who seek commercial and cultural treasures. The Ritz-Carlton is a place to see and be seen within the city and do not be surprised if you catch a glimpse at one of the A list celebs walking through the lobby or perhaps at their famed afternoon tea that is heavily frequented by locals celebrating a special occasion or toasting to the good life with a glass of bubbly. The Library showcases a beautifully designed place where timber floors and wood panelling create a warm and relaxing yet stylish ambience.

The facial includes a Traditional Egg Undulation and Mulberry Leaf Eye Treatment. A Moxa Naval Activation to improve metabolism, ease digestion and jetlag, precedes the Rattan Tapping Qi-Gong and the treatment concludes with a custom oil massage utilising both Chinese acupressure and Malay massage. To say you will leave feeling relaxed is an understatement.

While it may seem tempting to never leave the hotel, there is so much to see and do in the city and a visit to Batu Caves cannot be missed. Batu Caves is one of KL’s most infamous tourist attractions, thanks in part to its popularity on Pinterest. The attraction itself is a limestone hill comprising of three large caves and a handful of smaller ones combined. SEATTLE, WA

PORTLAND, OR

A modern metropolis, with acres of parkland, Seattle takes number one for versatility. No visit is complete without dining at the vibrant Pike Place Market. With 492,000 Instagram posts about the market, try their famous clam chowder or fresh seafood from the various vendors.

For lovers of art, local breweries, and coffee, Portland is the place to be. Know as the city’s ‘living room’, Pioneer Courthouse Square is one of the coolest destinations on the list. With live music and food trucks, there’s something to do all year round.

BRIGHTON AND HOVE, UK

COPENHAGEN, DENMARK

If you love the sea, eccentricity, and festivals, Brighton may be the destination for you. Take a trip to the not-for-profit, Marlborough Pub & Theatre, for a tasty English roast and a pint, or if it’s sunny you can head to the shore and enjoy some traditional fish and chips - be careful of the seagulls though.

You can’t have a bucket list unless you’ve ticked one Scandinavian city off the map, and Christiania is the perfect place if you’re looking for something different. With around 166,000 Instagram posts, this Freetown boasts colourful houses and an alternative hippy society.

ORLANDO, FL MIAMI, FL Visit the Wynwood Yard, one of Miami's coolest neighbourhoods, brimming with galleries, dive bars, and quirky shops. You can also see the local community gathering together to enjoy tasty vegan food and live music.

Everybody thinks of Disneyworld when you mention Orlando, but there’s so much more to this wonderful city. Lake Eola Park is one of the more scenic places to visit, with farmers markets, beer gardens, and if you’re feeling romantic a trip on a swan boat.

PITTSBURG, PA LISBON, PORTUGAL As Portugal’s hipster capital, you’ll walk through cobbled streets, historic centres and visit unique galleries, cocktail bars, and restaurants. Take a trip to Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, to enjoy a hilltop view of a sunset over the city.

HELSINKI, FINLAND There’s plenty of amazing things to see in Finland’s capital, especially Temppeliaukio Church which is built from solid rock. Don’t worry if you’re not religious as anyone can visit this stunning church, with plenty of live shows taking place, so you can enjoy the surreal acoustics of a rockin' church.

This may not be the first place you think of for a bucket list, but with over 35,000 Instagram posts, Pittsburgh’s Phipps Conservatory and botanical gardens are worth a visit all year round.

SPOKANE, WA If you love history and natural beauty, Spokane is the perfect addition to your 2019 bucket list. Kendall Yards Night Market is located on the river gorge, with vendors selling the best fresh produce, organic goods and live music for entertainment each week.

10 "MUST-DO" ACTIVITIES FOR SAILING ON A LARGE

"NEW TO YOU" CRUISE SHIP Exploring All The Aspects Of Your Cruise Ship Ensures Full Enjoyment Of Your Cruise Variety is the spice of life when it comes to cruising, say the travel experts at CruiseCompete, and sailing on different types of ships is a wonderful way to experience the world through different lenses. Each cruise ship is a new adventure, with its own unique style, amenities, and programs, and as such, deserves a thorough exploration. Here are 10 “must-do” activities for when you sail on a large “new to you” cruise ship, according to CruiseCompete affiliate All Things Cruise.

HOLIDAY 2019

LA TRAVEL

1

EXPLORE THE ENTIRE SHIP, TOP TO BOTTOM

This will take some time. With the deck plan in hand, start at the highest level accessible to passengers. Walk bow to stern, portside in one direction, starboard in the other. Many might be unending lines of staterooms, but sometimes ship’s put little lounges or bars in unusual places. Move one deck lower. Repeat the process.

Why:

2

VISIT EVERY BAR ON DECK

This will also take some time. There’s probably at least a dozen, maybe double that. This includes bars in specialty restaurants and poolside bars. Assuming you drink, order something in each one. Talk to the bar staff.

Why:

Certain bars get crowded. Find out when you need to get to the popular ones and be able to get a seat. Establish one as your favorite.

Many people see only a fraction of what’s on offer.

3

GET AS CLOSE TO THE BOW AS YOU CAN

At least one outside deck probably doubles as a jogging track. On a perfect day, while the ship is at sea, feel the (stiff) wind in your face. Look for dolphins. Look for other ships on the horizon.

Why: It’s an exciting, often loud experience.

5

VISIT EVERY PUBLIC SPACE

OK, you gave the 12+ decks the once over early in the voyage. At a quiet time during a sea day, systematically visit every room that’s not a restaurant or someone’s stateroom. In addition to the theater and casino, there’s likely a card room, library, cigar lounge, gym with steam room and sauna, spa, tennis courts and a pool with a retractable glass roof.

Why:

We get into habits. We visit familiar spots, missing out on other features the ship offers.

7

4

READ THE SHIP'S PROGRAM, COVER TO COVER

Do it on one of your first days at sea. It’s easy to give it the once over and miss 60% of what’s going on. You might have eliminated paper documents from your life years ago, yet here’s one, delivered daily. There are lots of activities spelled out in the fine print. You may not be into needlework or trivia, but you might like blackjack lessons or cooking classes.

Why:

The idea is “There’s something for everybody.” Are they right?

6

TRY AT LEAST ONE DINING VENUE YOU MIGHT IGNORE

If you are a casual buffet guy, try the formal dining room. If you eat every meal in the dining room, try a specialty restaurant. If you always go for steak and potatoes, try the Asian restaurant.

Why:

If you do everything over and over, a sameness or routine develops. Mix it up.

STUDY THE ROOM SERVICE MENU

8

FIND A QUIET SPOT

Who opens the drawer and pulls out the booklet explaining things like how to make phone calls? Judging by its pristine condition, very few people. The room service menu should be in there. Everything is probably free or included in your fare. How about a romantic dinner for two on your balcony? Think about planning a cabin party for your friends.

Large ships can mean large crowds. Think lots of kids having a great time in the pool, oblivious to how far water travels when you jump in from a great height. Find a spot, sheltered from the wind, ideally with some shade.

Why:

This becomes your special spot to decompress. You read. You nap. Maybe, just maybe, you share it with others.

If you entertain at home, why should your cruise be any different? Especially if someone else does the cooking!

9

VISIT ALL THE CHANNELS ON YOUR STATEROOM TV

At sea, your selection is limited, but the cruise ships do what they can to provide variety. You’ve probably got news stations. They might run some movies. Maybe they replay lectures and talks. There may be a few music only channels. There’s probably a bow camera view too.

Why:

Someone back at company HQ probably figured out what their passenger demographic wants to watch while on vacation. What did they choose?

Why:

10

PAMPER YOURSELF

When was the last time you had a full body massage? Enjoyed a 25-year-old scotch? Ordered caviar and champagne? Pick something you really enjoy that you don’t usually do at home.

Why:

Vacations are meant to help us decompress. They also create memories we revisit when things get stressful in our lives back home. Create some of those memories.

"Performing my own records live is a different type of feeling. Every time I hit the stage, I go into the performance as if it’s my last. I go into every performance with the thought that there might be a person in the audience that’s going through something, and all I can hope for is that they escape into the music and return home with a different approach in life. I have a headlining tour coming up (my first ever) and I’m so stoked to see my fans perform their heart out with me! They’ve been waiting for this and I love that every message I share with my music can resonate with others too. It goes to show that I’m just as human." -Dinah

LATM: Tell us your best or worst (the crazier the better) travel memory. DJ: I was rushing out the door racing to catch an early morning flight. Being that I was half asleep, I pulled up to the airport and noticed my phone wasn’t on me! I felt naked for 24 hours. Got it shipped the next day though! Phew. Never doing that again. LATM: Where are your favorite spots to hit up in LA when you’re not working? DJ: Shake Shack and Shape House! What a great combination, huh? When I’m really feeling outdoorsy, I hit up Runyon Canyon for some fresh air and to clear my mind. It’s therapeutic for me. LATM: What is your most proud achievement over the course of your career? DJ: Being able to give back to my grandparents everything they deserve. LATM: Where is one country or culture you would like to explore or learn more about? DJ: The Philippines! I find their culture very similar to Polynesians. Very big about family, giving and making anything with what they have. LATM: We noticed you are originally from the OC, if our readers were to spend the day with you there where would you take them? DJ: Let’s start off with food spots: Tapatia Taqueria, Flappys, Sushi Bear and Tommy’s Sushi – I’ve got to feed the readers before we start our trip! And you can’t forget Disneyland or Knots Berry Farm! Maybe even take them on a trip deep in Santa Ana, where I was raised, to my schools and parks where my family would gather to play sports and hang out. And this donut shop my grandpa would take me to right before I went to school. LATM: Describe a typical day on tour for you? DJ: Training in the morning, vocal warm ups, meet and greets with my cute ass fans, FaceTime calls from my family and soundcheck is super important to me. LATM: When you have time off, where do you like to escape to? DJ: Home to be with my grandparents, and sometimes the studio so I can get everything I’m dealing with internally off my chest. LATM: What are your next big goals for ending 2019 and heading into 2020? DJ: I have so many goals I’m focused on checking off by the end of this year but one I can share with you is becoming more purpose driven!

TRAVEL BY Zodiac SIGN: WHERE TO GO NOW BY LOOKING TO THE STARS!

HOLIDAY 2019

LA TRAVEL

Flash Pack, the only adventure travel company for solo travelers in their 30s and 40s, has partnered with astrology consultant Sally Kirkman to inspire travelers with a list of destinations that might appeal to the character of their zodiac sign. There's just a few months left to make this year's travel unforgettable but choosing where to go is a bit like picking out your favorite dessert! Sure, you could head for Amsterdam, but that means you’re missing out on Keralan hiking and Zimbabwe’s walking safaris. It's time to look to the stars for inspiration: Over 90% of adults know their star sign, and around half agree that Zodiac character descriptions are a good fit. These insights can help build an adventure that chimes with the kind of traveler you are.

Libra

September 23 - October 22 Traveler type: Culture Vulture

As one of the social air signs, you get your energy from others – you really enjoy having people around you to chat to and share experiences with. Your star sign is ruled by Venus, meaning you have a deep-rooted appreciation of art and beauty. City breaks are a great option for you; they’ll give you a chance to taste different cultures, and get under the skin of a place via exhibitions, performances and so on. And since you’re such a social soul, you love getting to know new communities; the people of another country will often fascinate you as much as the country itself. For traveling companions, look to other air signs, including Gemini, Aquarius and fellow Librans. Flash Pack's recommendation on where to go: Steeped in cultural legacy, Japan is closely associated with the star sign Libra. Austria, and in particular Vienna, is a very Libran place as well. Also pop Vietnam on your wish list, to explore dazzling cities, temple kingdoms and remote hillside communities.

Scorpio

OCTOBER 23 - NOVEMBER 21 Traveler type: Mystery Seeker

One of the emotional water signs, Scorpio is associated with deep water. There’s an intensity and passion about you which means you love places with a hint of mystery or elusiveness. For a great adventure, you seek destinations where you can peer into the unknown, or solve intriguing puzzles: it’s simply part of your nature. New Orleans, home to eclectic jazz and voodoo vibes, is very much your yen. An independent spirit, you’re happy to enjoy a holiday alone, at least some of the time. But if you do team up with anyone, fellow watery types – Cancer, Pisces and Scorpios like you – will suit you best. Flash Pack's recommendation on where to go: Marvelous Morocco is Scorpio ruled, and it really taps into your lure towards the exotic, with hidden souks and hazy mountain trails. Also look to Myanmar or Ecuador for your off-radar kicks.

Sagittarius

NOVEMBER 22 - DECEMBER 21 Traveler type: Ultimate Wanderluster

Congratulations – you are THE traveler and explorer of the Zodiac, with big planet Jupiter as your ruler driving a need for global connections. Exploring the world is something that strongly appeals to your gregarious, outward-looking nature. You love the roaming freedom of travel and naturally resist boundaries. You just want to explore, so big, bucket-list trips should be right in your crosshairs. There is a side to your nature that is a real hedonist too, you can have a lot of fun letting your hair down and you’ll probably be seeking out a party whenever you are in the world. Flash Pack's recommendation on where to go: Fun-loving South Africa, with its thriving cities and rich safari landscapes, is a country that’s closely associated with Sagittarius. Australia also beckons: perhaps with a camper van trip into the outback? And Peru, offering party cities and far-flung peaks, should not be overlooked.

Capricorn

DECEMBER 22 - JANUARY 19 Traveler type: Alpine Wanderer

Your star sign symbol is the mountain goat, and that gives you a real clue as to what you might like doing on holiday. As a Capricorn, you could be a really enthusiastic mountain trekker, with alpine peaks providing the kind of big perspective you hanker after. A trip into the wild will also help curb your reputation as the workaholic of the Zodiac, providing some much-needed downtime. You tend to go at a slow pace, which is what you’ll really enjoy on holiday; you’ll be able to slow down and pull back. There’s also a sense of history and legacy which is key your star sign, and may well govern the places you’re drawn to (Oxford in the UK, for example is a Capricorn city). Your perfect travel companions will be other Earth signs: seek out Taurus, Virgo and fellow Capricorn travelers. Flash Pack's recommendation on where to go: Unplug in Chilean Patagonia, hike the Himalayan hills or immerse yourself in the ancient archeology of Jordan to sate your historical appetite.

105

Aquarius

january 20 - february 19 Traveler type: Non-conformer

Generally speaking, there are two types of Aquarius: the science geek and the new-age hippie. Either way, you tend not to like to conform to what everyone else is doing; and on holiday, this translates to destinations that are different, unusual or overlooked. Taking on a true, wayward adventure is a very Aquarian thing to do. Moscow and St Petersburg in Russia are both Aquarius cities, and more remote parts of Scandinavia will also be a magnet to your intrepid streak. Bear in mind, too, that you’re one of the most humanitarian signs of the Zodiac. So, you might like to double on up any travel plans with an element of charity or volunteer work. Ecoawareness is also very important to you. Flash Pack's recommendation on where to go: Try visiting Iceland out of season, to explore its dramatic glaciers, waterfalls and more from a whole new perspective. Stay in a unique jungle lodge in the heart of the Bornean rainforest, for a chance to see endangered orangutans, or camp out in eco tree tents in the woods of summer Finland.

Pisces

FEBRUARY 20 - MARCH 20 Traveler type: Sea Nymph

Neptune, the God of the sea, is one of the major planets associated with your star sign. Being by the sea is crucial to you; it’s a place where you can feel soulful, and truly relax. Sailing or boating holidays will also appeal: really anything that chimes with the theme of water will serve you well. The people you travel with are important, too: there’s a gentle, empathetic side to your nature, and you need an emotional connection with the people you travel with. Reach out to other water signs; Cancer, Scorpio and fellow Pisces, for travelers who fit into your vibe. Yours is the last sign of the Zodiac and often there’s a spiritual or religious side to your nature. Santiago de Compostela in Spain is a Pisces town, as is Egypt. Flash Pack's recommendation on where to go: Head on a sea-faring pilgrimage to the beautiful islands of the Philippines, or zip around the Balinese coast by boat. The pyramids of ancient Egypt will give your spiritual side food for thought, along with Nile sailing to sweeten that sea-loving soul.

Aries

march 21 - april 19 Traveler type: Pioneer

As the first sign of the Zodiac, you’re a truly adventurous soul who’s drawn to new frontiers and unexplored horizons. The fact that you’re ruled by the planet Mars, representing courage and daring, only enhances this impulse. Your ideal holiday would be something that packs an adventure punch, and gives you an adrenaline rush. City-wise, Naples and Kraków – both brimming with colour and excitement – have your number. You get bored easily, so two weeks on a beach is not for you. You’re very independent, and have no problem going it alone. Flash Pack's recommendation on where to go: Try zip-lining through the rainforests of Belize, adventure caving in Borneo or a Finnish snowmobile safari.

Taurus

APRIL 20 - MAY 20

Traveler type: Easy Breezy You’re ruled by Venus, the planet of sensuality. This means you appreciate beauty, but you can also be quite lazy; you’re naturally drawn to places where you can properly chill, take it easy and have time out. As one of the Earth signs, you’re also very connected to nature, so vast green landscapes are ideal for you. Ireland and Switzerland are both ruled by Taurus. Look to similar outdoorsy yet relaxed settings shared with fellow Earth signs (Virgo, Capricorn) to guide your travel plans. Flash Pack's recommendation on where to go: Pop Slovenia on your radar. With wild beauty and lakeside glamping, it offers the perfect balance for you. Also mellow Laos, with a slow boat trip through the Land of a Thousand Elephants that allows plenty of time to unwind

Gemini

may 21 - june 20

Traveler type: Party Animal Lively Mercury is your ruling planet. It’s all about communication, which gives you the gift of the gab and means you’re always up for a good time. You love people-watching and are drawn to fun cities brimming with life; London, San Francisco and Melbourne are all Gemini cities. Your element is air, which is one of the social signs. Group travel is a great option for you, as you’re forever open to making new friends to hit the town with, as well as learning about new cultures. Curiosity is a key Gemini theme, so make sure you give this streak plenty of fuel. Flash Pack's recommendation on where to go: East Coast Australia, with its dynamic coastal cities, has to be top of your list. Don’t miss party-time capital Brazil, either, while swinging through the Deep South USA will keep those good times rolling.

Cancer

JUNE 21 - JULY 22

Traveler type: Water Baby Your ruling planet is the moon, and the moon is all about the home. So, it may actually take a bit of persuasion to get you away from your base. But when you do stray, you’re drawn places that feel quite familiar and secure. Cancer is also closely connected to the notion of family, so traveling as part of a tight-knit group would suit you well. As one of the emotional water signs, any sea or lakeside locations have a really soothing effect on you. One of the cities associated with Cancer is Amsterdam, with its labyrinth of calming canals. Also New Zealand, a welcoming nation of vast lakes and dreamy beaches. Flash Pack's recommendation on where to go: Scotland, with its dramatic lochs, glens and cosy pubs, could be a great choice for you. Or how about Canada, known for its warm city vibes and beautiful mountain lakes?

Leo

july 23 - august 22

Traveler type: Sunshine Schmoozer Your star sign is ruled by the sun, which means you crave heat, vitality and warmth. The sunshine literally feeds your spirit, which means you need to head somewhere hot at least a few times a year. Along with basking on the beach, you need a few things to do as well. Your star sign is playful, colorful and quite dramatic at times: you need to be centre of attention. Your ideal travel companions would be other fire signs; so fellow Leos, along with Sagittarius and Aries travelers. Flash Pack's recommendation on where to go: The vibrant colorscapes of India are like catnip for you (Mumbai is a Leoruled city). Also consider Los Angeles – the Hollywood dynasty is strongly Leo-orientated – or places such as Cuba and Colombia, that are brimming with sunshine, salsa and rum in roughly equal measure.

Virgo

AUGUST 23 - SEPTEMBER 22 Traveler type: Off-grid Romantic

Your planet is Mercury, which represents the mind, and you’re also one of the Earth signs. This means a back-to-nature theme may play well for you. You enjoy going off camping, or seeking out places of solace that offer degree of head space, away from the hustle of modern life. Your star sign is linked to the health and body, so anything with a wellness angle, like a yoga retreat, will bring you satisfaction. In addition, every Virgo has a strong romantic streak; you’re naturally drawn to classical, expressive destinations such as France and Greece. Organization is a key theme for you, as well: group travel would be great, as you like to know what you’re doing when. Flash Pack's recommendation on where to go: Delve into the rich artistic heritage of France, or find solitude off-grid in Norway or Nepal. Mindful yoga in Tuscany, meanwhile, will nourish both your romantic and health-conscious tendencies.

FOR THE OUTOF-THIS-WORLD COUPLE Bolivia

When the caterers have been paid and the centerpieces are packed up, the newly opened Kachi Lodge is the place to go for couples who crave experiences their friends have never even dreamed of. The only permanent lodging structure located on top of the Uyuni Salt Flats of Bolivia, Kachi Lodge’s modernist domes rise from the flat expanse of the altiplano like a surreal space station. At an elevation of 11,800 ft, the lodge’s proximity to the stars and the Salar’s sparse topography add to this effect. Guests can view the constellations through the clear panels of their geodesic domes or through telescopes with expert guides on hand to educate them about what they see and why it mattered to ancient Bolivian civilizations. In the daylight, honeymooners enjoy adventures such as downhill mountain biking on the edge of the Tunupa Volcano, trekking through the giant cacti of Incahuasi Island, or viewing the sunrise and sunset from the peak of Kachi Island. Delectable local cuisine is provided to Kachi Lodge guests by the Gustu Restaurant in La Paz.
