This Seasons’ Hottest Staycations from San Diego to Yosemite

Letter From The Editors’ Endless Summer 2022
The summer months are upon us and once again like clockwork the heat waves are hitting Southern California like they do year after year. School is out and the beaches are packed; concerts, festivals, sporting events take over the beaches from Santa Monica all the way down to San Diego and the tourists are arriving in droves. It is safe to say we are at our happiest when traveling the globe discovering new cultures, trying new foods, and meeting incredible people along the way. Since traveling is in our blood, we spend quite a bit of time on the road and the past few months were no different. With international travel still coming back slowly we were heavily focused on getting reacquainted with our local staycations. We made our way to Temecula to check out a few new wine infused hotspots and after exploring our way through San Diego we continued our California trek up north to get a dose of fresh air in Yosemite. Next on the list was the return to Ireland for a cross country road trip that was filled with quintessential Irish hospitality. This year’s Best of SoCal Readers’ Choice winners are top notch, and we are excited to share them with you in this issue. We tallied up your votes and have been waiting patiently to publish the results. There were so many great nominations this year and we want to thank everyone for voting! We look forward to seeing all of our Southern California fans at our upcoming events taking place in Los Angeles and Orange County this summer. Make sure to follow us on all our social media channels to receive updated information on these exciting experiences, this will be a summer to remember. Whatever plans you have for this travel season make sure you dedicate some “me” time in there as it is vitally important to feed your soul and disconnect. Grab your golf clubs, book a spa day or hit the trails; the options are endless. With so many exciting places to experience near and far, it is the most wonderful time of the year to travel.

DINING
NEW & NOTABLE
Dining
Herb & Wood, San Diego Local celebrity chef Brian Malarkey’s Herb & Wood stands strong as one of San Diego’s top dining establishments with its approach to Mediterranean and Californian cuisine served up with a twist. It all begins as you enter the striking lobby, an open air 8500 square foot space meticulously designed with contrasts of exposed brick walls, bountiful greenery, modern art and its signature first impression, a giant black unicorn. With a section of the dining room exposed under the evening stars guests revel in the idyllic combination of industrial-chic design, a European lounge style playlist and a menu that is bursting with Mediterraneaninspired flavors. Rustic wood-fired dishes are the highlight of this show with a strong emphasis on fresh, seasonal, and sustainable ingredients. The special relationship with the menu and the overall design of the space is one that needs to be experienced, the San Diego casual, bright airy space juxtaposed against a menu that is intriguing to the tastebuds as they come. Malarkey’s ability to pull out the most flavor of every ingredient on the menu, is what keeps guests coming in droves. The roasted baby carrots with cashew sesame dukkah, aleppo yogurt and carrot top pesto are a hit. Don’t sleep on the seven spiced cauliflower with fried chickpeas, cauliflower hummus, dried apricot, curry leaves, only a mastermind could dream up these vivid combinations turning simple vegetables into literal works of art. It is not by chance that Malarkey is one of the country’s most famed and successful celebrity chefs, throughout his career he has owned and operated over 15 ultra-successful restaurant concepts and has a personality that is as bright as his food. Malarkey and his long-time business partner Christopher Puffer founded Puffer Malarkey Collective, a restaurant group that consists of six concepts in San Diego and Orange County, ANIMAE, Herb & Wood, Herb & Sea in San Diego and Herb & Ranch in Orange County. SOL Mexican Cocina, Irvine SOL Mexican Cocina from Xperience Restaurant Group (owner and operator of El Torito, Chevys Fresh Mex, Sol Mexican Cocina, Acapulco and Las Brisas) recently opened its newest location in Irvine, bringing a fresh new vibe to the city’s culinary scene. CUNARD Following the eagerly anticipated name reveal of Queen Anne on February 8th, Cunard now proudly introduces exciting details of the design. Queen Anne has been created with an extraordinary new vision, taking some of the finest talents of our time to write a striking new chapter in Cunard’s a story inspired by the brand’s remarkable past. Designers David Collins Studio, Richmond International and Sybille de Margerie working with the Creative Director Adam D. Tihany, are collaborating to create an extraordinary and thoughtful, modern approach to the venues, suites, and décor design. The talents’ portfolios include luxury hotels, spas, restaurants and bars, as well as high-end yachts, and private grand residences. For the first time, David Collins Studio and Sybille de Margerie are taking their land-based expertise to the ship experience. The concept was founded on heritage, craftsmanship, storytelling, style and innovation. These five pillars ultimately became the design DNA for the ship, and accordingly, the engine of inspiration for the designers, working together in unison. Adam D. Tihany, Creative Director for Cunard, underscored how these five values would interplay: “Just the way a world-renowned orchestra delivers a feeling or takes you to a moment or an era, Queen Anne’s aesthetic would do the same in harkening Cunard’s gilded age, but through the bold, onward lens of modernity.”
34
The design teams tapped into the Cunard Archives, held at the University of Liverpool, sourcing a rich trove of historical documents and details on layout, materials, fabrics, patterns and textures. No stone was left unturned, from iconic poster advertisements, brochure covers and plans of grand spaces of Cunard’s early deco-inspired ships, to deliver a ship concept that rivals the finest in hospitality experienced onshore. Adam D. Tihany explains he crystallized the vision as an “enchanting bridge from Cunard’s storied history to the future.” Simon Rawlings, Creative Director at David Collins Studio says of the design brief, “I was daunted by the scale, and a multitude of venues to begin with, but as we started to unravel the journey, craft the experiences, and hone the vision, it all became clear. We wanted to create something nostalgic yet contemporary, relaxed yet glamorous, new and exciting – all within the constraints of a ship.” Sybille de Margerie says, “We based the design on a sense of wonder, like a matchmaker at sea that introduces the past to its most alluring future.” The design DNA was first brought to life through the iconic Cunard Queens Grand Suites. The Queens Grill Grand Suites offer guests their own private residences onboard and deliver a new level of exclusivity, with each finish carefully curated in every room. Designed by David Collins Studio, they represent the epitome of luxury accommodation at sea with a dedicated dining room and adjacent butler’s pantry, walk-in wardrobes, marble-finished bathrooms with views out to sea, a spacious bedroom and the largest balconies onboard. The Princess Grill Suites, designed by Sybille de Margerie, are warm, inviting and surrounded by the softest materials and delicate textures for an intimate experience featuring a bespoke dressing table and bar area with pattern wall panel inspired by the flowing lines of Cunard’s past liners, sculpted ceiling panels and grand saloon carpets by textile designer, Corinne Hughes. While the Britannia balcony staterooms provide cozy sofa seating areas looking out to sea, and light, bright bathrooms with glass walk-in showers for a more relaxed, luxury experience. A focal point for guests and the heart of the ship, the Grand Lobby, was designed to provide a show-stopping entrance, full of energy and light. Marking the transition from past to present, the area houses a contemporary metal mural sculpture that changes throughout the day by the lighting effect integrated
within with an art deco leaning in homage to the Golden Age of travel. The narrative is also keenly brought into play through the elevated entertainment spaces such as the vivid reimaging of the flagship Royal Court Theatre. The two-deck 825 seat space, designed by Richmond International, is inspired by the great sound halls of the world. All seating is of the utmost comfort and adorned in rich velvet providing each guest with a perfect view of the stage, where they may enjoy a wide variety of entertainment throughout the day and night. Each of the fifteen restaurants onboard Queen Anne are distinctive where guests will enjoy a wide variety of cuisines from around the world. This is vividly reflected in the décor from the strikingly grand Britannia Restaurant to the newly refined Golden Lion pub. A first in Cunard’s fleet, Queen Anne will also exclusively reveal a new wellness and beauty concept never seen before on a Cunard vessel featuring the widest selection of fitness, beauty, thermal and spa suite facilities with a contemporary, open and airy aesthetic. Another vital aspect of the overall blueprint is the color palette which has been individually curated for every space to create a unique ambiance in every setting. Bold new colors elevate the signature spaces and Queens Grill Suites, deep blues with flashes of golden yellow in the Britannia Staterooms have been chosen to reflect the sea and shimmer of sunlight and deep rich tones of red, amber and gold heighten the luxurious lounge feel of the Princess Grill Suites. For the Princess and Queens Grill restaurants, bright colors were chosen with elements of gold, to reinforce the luxurious but refined overall design aesthetic on board. Another first for Cunard, the updated exterior of the ship will proudly sport the famous red funnel but also will debut a refined updated livery, with a finessed design of the iconic crest and introduction of an elegant new font inspired by the grand ocean liners of the past, to confidently present the name Queen Anne on the forward bow. Queen Anne will set sail in early 2024, with her maiden season program available to book from May 2022.

Carlsbad, Quintessential SoCal Carlsbad feels like the best of America due to its small-town laid-back feel and proximity to the ocean. Situated 30 mins north of San Diego and a few hours south of LA, Carlsbad is a charming community with seven miles of pristine beaches and picturesque inland regions that make an unforgettable road trip escape. The main town – Carlsbad Village – feels both vibrant and safe as people walk their dogs, kids dine together and shimmy down the sidewalk on their skateboards, past racks of clothes for sale outside the boutiques. Each time we return we wonder how much better life could be if we lived here, because the area feels easy compared to Los Angeles. While many people flock here for a golf getaway, Legoland adventure, or beach escape, we continue to fall in love with Carlsbad’s outdoor dining, craft breweries, and overall quality of life where charming quintessential sunny Southern California just vibes. EXPLORE + PLAY Carlsbad drew us back again this spring for the annual Flower Fields exhibition that occurs from early March through early May. Over 50 acres at Carlsbad Ranch are transformed into a sea of vivid colors thanks to skilled farmers keeping the ground perfectly irrigated for 30 days. They create sixteen hues of papery ranunculus flowers. Once upon a time, these same hills grew poinsettias for the Ecke family who sold them as cut flowers and later grew them in pots using a photosynthetic trick to make them bloom in time for Christmas – creating the traditional Christmas flower that is now ubiquitous in the US. See a greenhouse filled with many varieties of the poinsettia, but not before posing for a photo on a tractor or oversized chair in the blooming flower fields with your loved one. Make reservations to visit the Carlsbad Aquafarm lagoon and learn how oysters and mussels are locally grown before feasting on as many Carlsbad Blond oysters as you can stomach. As part of the hour tour, you’ll practice how to properly shuck these homegrown briny meat mollusks before slurping them down. Meander the cute area known as Carlsbad Village to peruse local shops or grab a lavender latte, white chocolate mocha, or other fun coffee medley at the openair Succulent Café dripping with air plants, little multi colored desert florae, and walls of hanging succulents. Take a moment to savor the setting and watch hummingbirds buzz over your morning coffee. Wander the village to admire street murals emphasizing and celebrating the business nearby like a doughnut superhero or sea turtles with a boy holding a 3-D umbrella by @SnyderArt or a giant robot pouring water out of a windowsill that dons a massive wall outside Crackheads and Choice Juicery. At The Goods, coffee comes with luxuriously decadent doughnuts with varieties like Carrot Cake or Vermont Maple Bacon. For those looking for a little more adventure, rent zippy fast e-bikes from Pedego Electric Bikes (in Carlsbad Village) to cruise up or down the coast, admiring the glistening crashing surf as you glide into another laid-back California surfer

town. Stop along the way to check out vintage stores and local outdoor markets. Oceanside or Encinitas is just ten miles away. DINE + WINE Make reservations for CAMPFIRE, a popular New American restaurant and cocktail bar where a return to the origins of cooking are emphasized. A 2019 Michelin Bib Gourmand recipient, CAMPFIRE is a local favorite because wood fired cooking is always the best idea. In the heart of Carlsbad Village, find this rustic cool glamping camp-y designed restaurant with an aqua CAMPFIRE sign outside that reads in small print, “Don’t exist, Live.” A World War II era Quonset metal hut anchors the space behind. CAMPFIRE uses red California oak in a 12-foot wood burning hearth. Their most popular dish is the roasted lime peanut broccoli with chermoula and guests love to share the tableside S’mores. Campfire opens for dinner at 5 PM. Nearby is also Jeune et Jolie, a Michelin Star restaurant offering a 5-course set priced tasting menu. We recommend spending part of the evening down a little alley next to CAMPFIRE at Carruth Cellars, a buzzing outdoor wine tasting room where you can enhance your tasting flight with a cheese, olive, and salami charcuterie board. This urban winery buys the grapes from the country (northern and central CA) and makes the wine in the city right next to the beach in Oceanside. They have successfully produced 15 award winning wines as rated by the San Francisco Chronicle. Some of our favorites sipped here included the Cabernets, a GSM Blend with Paso Robles grapes, and Chardonnay from the Russian River. Glasses and bottles are available for sipping away your afternoon or indulging in early evening escapades at this friendly spot. Just ten minutes up the road, find your way to Valle, which brings Valle de Guadalupe cuisine to California with smoked notes and charred components. A prefix menu curated by Chef and winemaker Roberto Alcocer (who owns Malvo in Valle de Guadalupe) includes charcoal oven cooking and woodfire essence with California fresh ingredients. The newly-opened restaurant is stunningly designed featuring wooden fixtures and natural elements and sits on the bottom floor of the Mission Pacific Hotel across from the ocean and 2,000-foot-long fishing pier. The four-course sensory tasting menu is definitely enhanced with the exceptional wine pairing from Baja’s Valle de Guadalupe plus a dessert wine and port from Europe. The menu is designed for the curious eater who likes to explore new tastes with little creative surprises along the way like mesquite coal fired banana leaf wrapped squash meant to be placed in a tortilla, marinated charred cauliflower, or a decadent dessert shaped like a flower with its pistil dipped in bee pollen. After dinner, admire the restored (and relocated) Victorian bungalow home next door. You might recognize it from the movie Top Gun, where Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis turned up the heat before riding off into the sunset on a motorcycle. Presumably, a signature dessert experience will be possible inside to take you back to 1986 or at least to get you ready for Top Gun: Maverick to take flight in theaters Memorial Day weekend.
For brunch, continue on with the Baja theme since you are so close to the border. Check out cactus laden Tulum-esque Casero Taqueria in the Carlsbad hillside for refreshing spicy Mezcal cocktails and beautiful views from the back of the restaurant’s fire pits. Featuring a Baja-inspired brunch menu and great price points, Casero offers an outstanding breakfast burrito with soft scrambled layered eggs with citrus braised pork and a filling Baja Breakfast Bowl with chorizo, beans, and potatoes topped with sunny side up eggs. Add some carnitas or shrimp tacos for good measure. For sushi lovers, Blue Ocean Robata and Sushi Bar is THE place because the luscious fresh sushi and sashimi is so fresh and prices can’t be beat, especially for lunch specials (12-3) or during weekday happy hour (3-6). Gorge yourself on an impressive sashimi platter, hand rolls, or tempura. This splashy modern geometric and wood designed venue is a stunner – both uplifting and inspirational – but serves equally stunning specialty rolls, grilled skewers, sake and creative cocktails. Sit at the bar and chat with the sushi chef master over ikura or kampachi with truffle oil. You can even pick up an omakase box to-go and bring it to the beach. For more fun, try beer tasting samples at Barrel Republic in the Carlsbad Village. This place is a mecca for craft beer lovers. A pay-by-the-ounce magnetic wristband allows you to freely walk around and pour your own beers. Sample and compare over 52 rotating beers. No bartender
needed and no commitment to a beer you don’t love. Suds that excited us include High Watermelon wheat beer from San Francisco, Ginger Pear Cider from Common Cider Company out of Sparks, NV, and Japanese Rice Lager from Trustworthy Brewing Co. from Burbank, CA. And for those looking to grab a quick bite loaded with options all under one roof, look no farther than the newly relaunched Windmill Food Hall – reopened with every imaginable cuisine like pizza and calzones, ramen, sushi burritos, tacos, Thai dishes, Greek gyros, and more. STAY + REST The Cassara Carlsbad, part of the Tapestry Collection by Hilton, is the perfect place to stay when visiting the seasonal Flower Fields because you can literally walk down the road to the entrance or view the bright rows of ranunculus flowers from the well-heated ‘quiet’ hotel pool. Nestled in 12 lush acres over the Pacific Ocean, our room sat above the field designed like an American flag, with the ocean in the distance. Rooms have been renovated to reflect modern clean lines while the lobby has been redesigned with mid-century modern furnishings. Recently, the hotel unveiled 29 two-bedroom Karlsbad Family Suites for guests to enjoy with loved ones when they need time away from home. A complimentary shuttle can take guests within a 5-mile radius as well as Carlsbad’s one-of-a-kind Ride the Tide open-air beach trolley with daily service to Tamarack Beach. Amenities include access to two pools – a ‘quiet’ pool and a ‘family’ pool complete with a splash pad, socially distanced BBQ grills and fire pits, and locally sourced libations and small bites available at The Cassara Kitchen & Bar. The family-friendly Cassara Carlsbad is also adjacent to LEGOLAND California, which features a private pedestrian entrance. The resort offers convenient access to water sports at the Carlsbad lagoon, scenic running and biking paths, golfing at The Carlsbad Crossings and outdoor shopping at the Carlsbad Premium Outlets. Westin Carlsbad Resort and Spa Book a fourth-floor balcony room that sits above the expansive shoreline horizon for sunset views. Situated atop a 50+ acre complex, 28 suites of the 208 guest rooms come with tantalizing views. You can be sure of a sound night sleep here too as the signature luxury Westin Heavenly Bed is one of the best. Next to Legoland, the familyfriendly Westin also offers the same nearby fun and transportation amenities along with a one-hour free bike rental.

Mixology Masters
No one could have anticipated the success of the 2021 Mixology Masters, an evening of friendly competition presented by Porsche Irvine on November 13th. The sophisticated event brought together Southern California’s best bartenders, food and beverage connoisseurs, and elite community members for an exciting collaboration to benefit Barks of Love Animal Rescue.
46
Eager visitors quickly filled the intimate space upon entry as they were greeted by showgirls on the red carpet and were handed a voting ballot that signified the challenge was about to begin. Guests enjoyed a plethora of refreshing libations from NEFT Premium Vodka, Knob Creek` Bourbon, Nolet’s Gin, Cruzan Rum and Tres Generaciones Tequila. During the event, small bites were served from local restaurants and caterers which included a variety of Crepes from LA Paris Creperie, Paella from Savory Roads and specialty carnival food from Food Fiesta Carts. Sweet treats were provided thanks to A Little Something Sweet Desserts and Love Swirls Cotton Candy which satisfied guests with an indulging treat that was a sweet end to the ultimate tasting experience. With the energy at a high, the showdown was ready to get started as each mixologist began prepping. Local mixologists competed for each guest’s vote. Guests watched in anticipation as each mixology master took time to shake, stir, and muddle their way in hopes of winning first place. As the evening continued and the final votes were about to be submitted, the competition was fierce as each participant knew their time to impress was drawing to a close. Guests hurried to cast their pick and waited for the results while enjoying music from DJ D-Dub and live performances by Edge of the World Entertainment. Interactive installations and cozy lounge areas kept visitors socializing as they discussed their favorite drinks of the night! Once the tallies were in, it was officially time to announce the winner for Best Mixologist. The room cheered as local Orange County Mixologist, Nikolas Hernandez from Matter of Craft in Huntington Beach took home the title. His creation “Where Everybody Knows Your Name” showcased a creative mix of flavors from Matcha to Citrus Bitter. Congratulations were also in order for Rocky Ward of Social Kitchen + Craft Bar as his unique creation and flavors won him the award for “Most Creative Cocktail.” The evening extravaganza was a beautiful night of glamour, excitement, and luxury enjoyed by all, making the second annual Mixology Masters an event to remember.

MEET THE WINNER: Nikolas Hernandez Mixology is an exciting discipline that combines an appreciation of classic cocktails and cocktail culture with a desire to create new recipes using a forward-thinking approach. It all started at a family friends dining establishment at the young age of 13 causing Hernandez to grow up with an appreciation for the restaurant industry. As soon as he turned 21 he went in to the bartending world and has never left. Using unique ingredients and techniques he regularly creates new and innovative mixed drinks by experimenting and it has certainly turned him in to an award-winning mixologist. We sat down with the recent Mixology Master winner to discuss where his inspiration for mixology began, what continually inspires him to create and what his career goals are for the future. How did you get into this industry? NH: When I was 13 years old, my mom’s friend owned a family restaurant in Covina and I asked my parents if I could work there on the weekends to make some extra cash. They started me off as a cashier and I worked my way up to a manager. That was my first step into the restaurant industry. Since then, I evolved into serving and then bartending through college when I turned 21. Once I got into bartending, I never left. Where did your love of mixology begin? NH: Over the years, as I learned how to mix cocktails, eventually I hit a point where I wanted to do more. I started thinking about how to create the cocktail in its entirety, instead of just mixing together premade ingredients. I began by learning from great chefs, and experimenting with different herbs and spices that can come together to make a great cocktail, while learning from mixologists along the way. I dove into the art of mixology and learned how to infuse, creating my own syrups and bitters from scratch—building my cocktails from the ground up.
48
What is your favorite part about your job as a mixologist? NH: I love when someone sits at my bar, I ask them what they want to drink and they tell me “dealer’s choice.” I’ll get their flavor profile or preferred choice of spirit, and then I take free reign and build them a custom drink. Once they take the first sip, I see their face, and I know I nailed it, that’s the best feeling for me. How did you come up with your winning cocktail, “Where Everybody Knows Your Name”? NH: First and foremost, I wanted to pay homage to my favorite, classic drink. In its truest, purest form, the old fashioned is a bourbon, sugar, and bitter. I also wanted to tie in my fascination with matcha, and how it’s in drinks and pastries in coffee shops everywhere. I paired organic matcha with bourbon, to create a one-of-a-kind flavor profile for the base of my cocktail. Next, my love for tea came into play. I love chai tea, so I infused the chai spices with honey for the syrup. Lastly, I created my umami citrus bitter, and perfected the garnish to tie everything together. My goal was to put a creative, modern spin on a timeless cocktail. How do you find creativity and drive to create new libations and cocktails? NH: I get a lot of inspiration from my early 1900s cocktail recipe books. The amount of creativity and attention to the craft that they had back then is inspiring. My goal is to always wow my patrons with my drinks, so I’m always striving to make something new. Which other SoCal restaurants/bars do you like to visit for inspiration? NH: I like to visit speakeasies because of how precise they are with their ingredients and cocktail builds. I also get inspiration from fine dining restaurants because of their presentation, etiquette and attention to detail.
Tell us about your position at Matter of Craft, when did you start and what does their current mixology program entail? NH: I started at Matter of Craft at their inception, in February of 2020. I’m the master mixologist who designed the entire bar program, and I also maintain front of the house operations. My mixology program consists of rotating seasonal cocktails and hand-crafted spins on classics--not to mention my flash cocktails of the day. You can find anything from a smoked old-fashioned to a made-to-order sangria. We use hand-infused spirits, homemade syrups, and hand-crafted bitters. I try to keep people on their toes by always creating something fresh, new and exciting. What is the best drink you’ve ever had and where did you have it? NH: The best drink I ever had was at Summit House in Fullerton, CA. I asked the bartender to make me a boulevardier. The drink was well balanced, and the bartender had a good choice of bitters. What are your favorite spirits and brands to work with? NH: Definitely bourbons/ryes and gins. Some of my favorite brands include Four Roses, Old Forester, Sazerac and Whistle Pig. For gins, I love Tanqueray, Nolet’s, Monkey 47 and Boodles. What are your career goals for the rest of the year? NH: I plan on keeping my bar fresh with new ideas, and continuing to learn and perfect my craft. My goal is to keep what I do fun and exciting so that it never feels like work to me. Cocktail Name: Where Everybody Knows Your Name Ingredients: Organic Matcha Powder Chai Infused Honey Syrup Cucumber Mint Infused Water Unami Citrus Bitter Knob Creek Bourbon

Destination Dingle Heading to the southwestern corner of Ireland you find yourself in arguably the most charming and character-filled part of the country. Ireland’s most westernmost peninsula Dingle, a place where life slows down to a crawl, and perhaps this is what is so special about this part of the journey. It is quite common that a traffic jam in Dingle will be caused by a flock of sheep crossing the one lane road, the sheep herder paying no mind to the fact that his flock is holding up the line of cars behind him, this as they say, just comes with the territory. The actual
62
town of Dingle a vibrant seaside community in County Kerry is a haven for seafood and a place to find traditional local Irish culture amidst one of the most unspoiled landscapes of beauty you will ever lay eyes on. Once a fishing dominated industry Dingle was typically only visited by students and other Irish folk looking for work, today the area is a booming tourism hub due to its exposure through Hollywood directors, social media influencers and foodies searching for the ever-famous Dingle pub food. With the recent media spotlight and exposure to the world Dingle has now seen the influx of a new age movement with the addition of health focused restaurants, whole food grocery outlets, energy healing centers and alternative clothing stores all bringing a feel of the “New Ireland”. While a few may not invite this evolving culture to the area this can easily be seen as an overall positive impact to the economy of Dingle allowing local businesses to thrive in the tourism seasons. Small workshops, galleries, boutiques, hotels, and small family-owned businesses dot the streets of Dingle but let’s be honest, we can’t forget what keeps the heartbeat alive, the pubs! In a town of just over 2,000 people there are a whopping 32 local watering holes providing the energetic buzz that is said to keep the area alive and kicking. Pub culture is intrinsic to the easy way of life here, if you want the inside scoop of what makes Dingle so special, a pub crawl any night of the week will certainly be the key. Not playing any favorites but we may have just heard that Foxy John’s and Dicky Mack’s Pub and Brewery may be head to be head as the most popular places to see and be seen! Although we see nothing wrong with spending your days sipping fine whiskeys and pints of Guinness in the famed pubs of Dingle there are so many more attractions that make this part of the country so unique. Jump in the car and tackle the mighty Slea Head drive which rivals any scenic drive across the entire island, the 46 km route takes you on a journey showcasing breathtaking scenery, historical sites and quaint little towns and villages. A visit to the awe-inspiring Ceann Sibeal is a must, located on the Dingle Peninsula Ceann Sibeal or (Dingle Golf Club) is the most westerly golf course in Ireland and for that matter, all of Europe. Every hole on the links course has been carved by Mother Nature and being in one of the most unspoiled parts of the country, one can only imagine the natural beauty before you. Another highlight that can’t be missed when visiting the area is the small ancient island of Skellig Michael. If you happen to be a Star Wars fan Skellig Michael was the rocky hideaway that Luke Skywalker was reintroduced to fans in “The Force Awakens” which came out in 2014. Although there are many tourist attractions on the outskirts of Dingle, we cannot forget about just taking a stroll through the downtown area where you will find yourself surrounded by bright colorful buildings, a town beaming with character and charm. If luck is on your side and you happen to be visiting during a break from the rain make sure to rent a paddleboard to tour the harbor, visit the aquarium or take a boat tour to catch a glimpse of the local celebrity dolphin “Fungie”.
Next Stop, Listowel As your journey starts the dwindling towards its finality one last stop before heading to the Dublin airport is an absolute must. Just over an hour departing from Dingle, you find yourselves in the quaint, historic town of Listowel in County Kerry. To be straightforward what makes the town of Listowel so special is that it is not a popular and touristy town, yet it yields everything that one could desire to get a true feel of authentic Irish culture. Known for its rich heritage and open-air market Listowel boasts attractions that highlight the town’s fascinating history and culture but as any story that needs to be told, it all starts with the people. There are many things to see and do during your stopover in Listowel, from a visit to the Listowel Castle, to the beautifully restored
19th century Georgian house that is home to the Kerry Writer’s Museum to the compelling beauty of the Garden of Europe you will surely find endless ways to spend your days. Although there are many places of interest that the town of Listowel has to offer showcasing its historical allure there is one stop that could easily be the highlight of your entire Irish road trip. The stop that we talk about is the ever-famous John B. Keane’s which is arguably Ireland’s most famous pub. First off most importantly this is not just a pub, some have been known to call it a “live Irish theater” with live poetry, song and dance performed packing the premises with locals and tourists alike. Although a small building, this famous landmark packs quite the punch oozing with local history and standing strong as ever 67 years after it was purchased by John and his wife Mary. John B. Keane was many things, a famous playwright, dramatist, novelist, poet as well as a raconteur (a person who tells anecdotes in a skillful and amusing way) and was a beloved man all throughout his home country of Ireland. Born on the 21st of July 1928 Keane spent his life creating his masterpieces to bring a spotlight to the world on the country he loved so much until his death in 2002, he was 73. He was such a beloved man and meant so much to his country for his literary contributions that his statue can be seen in the town square. Erected in 2007 the entire town of Listowel as well as Dublin’s literary elite came out to celebrate the monumental occasion, town Mayor Anthony Curtin pronounced proud as ever, “He put us on the map”. Thankfully the family tradition has been kept alive and well through John B’s son Billy Keane, like his father a man wearing many hats, a renowned writer, broadcaster, publican, barman, father, the list goes on. For Billy keeping the family pub alive was as much as a goal as raising his children in a beloved home, he did what any smart father/ businessman would do, combine his two loves as one. Billy’s two children as well as his sister Joanna’s children all worked in the pub during their college years so as one can imagine the feeling of family inside the doors of John B. Keane’s is as strong as the whiskey behind the bar. A visit to the pub and a chat with Billy will surely top the highlights of your trip, a place where there are no TVs, where locals come to talk the way it is supposed to be says Billy. If you are one of the lucky ones you may just catch a glimpse of his father’s typewriter, still in its original position, a place where John B would stare out at the world passing him by, a place where masterpieces came to life. Driving back to the airport and staring out at the rolling green hills before you it starts to sink in, you have just been on one of the most inspiring road trips of your life. Ireland is a mystical land, a place that is as deep as the ocean, so much to see, so much to do. Although a small country by size it is safe to say that Ireland’s famed history rivals any country in the world and is arguably filled with some of the nicest people you will ever meet.

Lithuania, The Hidden Gem of the
Baltic Sea
Vibrant city life, rich gastro scene, music festivals, the European Capital of Culture 2022, and vast white sand beaches, among other things, await travelers in Lithuania this summer. 66
Lithuania, one of the three Baltic countries located on the shores of the Baltic Sea, is rightly called a hidden gem in the heart of Europe. Compact in size but rich in natural and urban landmarks, the country is deeply saturated with colorful history, culture, and inherent hospitality. Although Lithuania offers refreshing views all year round, the lushness of greenery and incessant city buzz makes it especially tempting for summertime touring. Here’s a sneak peek at top Lithuanian sites worthy of a summertime exploration, from the cobblestoned capital Vilnius to invigorating Baltic seaside delights.
The three Lithuanian capitals: Vilnius, Kaunas, Trakai Lithuania can boast of three capitals, which existed throughout the country’s long history. Vilnius, the current metropolis, is best characterized by its red-roofed and cobblestoned Old Town, recognized as part of the UNESCO heritage, and a vibrant cultural and gastro scene. Seeing as it is the only European capital to officially allow hot-air balloon rides over the city, Vilnius might be traversed both on the ground and up in the air, making it an attractive starting point in travelers’ explorations of the country.
Kaunas, the second-largest Lithuanian city, was the capital in 1919-1940, and now brims with culture and intriguing synthesis of modernist interwar and Art Deco architecture. There’s no better time to visit the former capital than now as Kaunas was given the title of the European Capital of Culture 2022. The visitors will find endless entertainment in over 1,000 events—festivals, concerts, exhibitions— and a chance to marvel at the art of renowned international artists like Yoko Ono and Marina Abramović. Tucked away less than 30 km from Vilnius, Trakai Island Castle is Lithuania’s historical capital and a tiny medieval city. Its principal draw, Trakai Castle, stands tall on an island, reflecting the olden days of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. After roaming its medieval corridors and participating in numerous water activities—yachting, paddleboarding, bathing, and swimming—visitors can try the town’s most characteristic dish kibinai—pastries stuffed with meat, mushroom, vegetable, and other fillings.
Baltic seaside: former fishing villages and endless sand dunes Lithuania’s port town Klaipėda blends the sweeping seaside views with abundant testimonies of historical German influence. The city overflows with cultural sites, seafood restaurants, and lively bars
that give way to the tranquility of vast unspoiled beaches. Klaipėda region, especially the unofficial summertime capital Palanga, comes to life during the warm season when residents from all over Lithuania temporarily relocate to the seaside. Those looking for a more niche experience, may time-travel to the prehistoric landscape of the Curonian Spit, which could be called the Hamptons of Lithuania. Only a short ferry ride away from Klaipėda, the UNESCO-recognized peninsula offers desert-like dunes, the rural charm of the old fishermen settlements, the ever-growing gastro and hipster scene as well as accommodation in traditional design villas.
The Hill of Crosses—a symbol of freedom and hope
Northern Lithuania hides a sleepy hill sprinkled with thousands of crosses, which symbolize Lithuanian perseverance, fight for freedom, and relentless hope. An eerie sight situated amidst the rolling hills of Šiauliai District, the Hill of Crosses was restored many times throughout the Soviet era when authorities ruthlessly removed the crosses but the locals never ceased to put the new ones up again. The landmark, visited by Pope John Paul II, now attracts pilgrims and curious travelers from all around the world.

Washington, D.C. Then and Now 68
By Melissa Curtin
Returning to the nation’s Capital after 15 years was like retracing the footsteps of my youth. After graduate school in Connecticut, I moved to the Washington, DC area where I spent ten years growing up and learning how to navigate the world and survive a city. Recently, my 25year reunion had been canceled at Gettysburg College, but some of us decided to still return to DC. While I came to revisit my past, I revisited America’s history. Upon landing, immediately memories flooded back as an old college friend in town from London picked me up in the evening and whizzed us by the Washington Monument obelisk, shrouded in surreal smoke like a Munsch painting. The west coast fires had followed me. A longstanding Washingtonian, she always took pride in showing me the Nation’s monuments and reminded me as we passed a statue of Reagan that locals call the airport just “National.” As we approached Upper Northwest, the once familiar scene of rows of historic Victorian homes looked just as I remembered with the National Cathedral glimmering like Chartres in France. “It is sometimes called the City of Magnificent Distances, but it might with greater propriety be termed the City of Magnificent Intentions.” – Charles Dickens . As we crossed the city to K Street I checked into the new Hotel Eaton, a second property after a Hong Kong location conceived by Katherine Lo, a filmmaker and anthropologist. A recording studio greeted me in the lobby adorned with records of black artists. Just past check-in, video art related to white privilege caught my eye while a “fugitive broadcast” ran positive black images. Off the lobby, a “radical library” stuffed with hundreds of books focused on race and inclusive narratives while the ceiling decked with a black and white newspaper art installation represented the last 40 years of the DC music scene – from punk to gogo to hip hop to rap. Photographs in the hall paid homage to Harriet Tubman’s birthplace by a black female photographer. Once inside my top-floor suite, I perused black music legends to put on the record player. Guests learn about systematic racism through art and inquiry all over the hotel. The next morning, I peeped into Hotel Eaton’s hip plant-filled coffee café next to the lobby and a mid-century modern restaurant under renovation along with a social and collaborative workspace with Soho House vibes that will soon offer coffee and light bites. Also, on the first floor, a small cinema hosts film school documentaries and in the past the March on Washington and even politician AOC. “So woke” kept popping in my head as I marveled at the black and white photographs in my room, the jazz upstairs on the rooftop lounge, a hip hop band promoting their tunes, and various organizations congregating here to make a difference. Considered the Tesla of hotels, Hotel Eaton is rethinking the entire hospitality industry with community building, activism, and awareness through various mediums setting the stage for innovation, inspiration, and impact. Hotel Eaton is truly a social and creative incubator! After my cross-country flight, my first instinct in the morning was to walk so I used my iPhone map to direct me towards Logan Circle then Dupont Circle, once an old stomping ground in my twenties as we use to drink cocktails at the Big Hunt. Sadly, now shuttered. A plastered sign above the street reminds Washingtonians to “Love Thy Neighbor As Thyself.’ A man in a tailored suit whizzes by me on a scooter, a scene so unfamiliar to me now after being in Los Angeles for 15 years. I can’t remember the last time I saw a guy in a suit anywhere. I can’t help but think that people living here are doing important work and they like to follow rules and protocols. At a 4-way crossing, rainbow stripes painted on the pavement brighten my step and remind me this is a place that celebrates inclusivity. More evidence of fall appears in goblins and pumpkins donning steps as I admire plants from my past that I no longer see in California like honeysuckle, ivy, and red berry bushes. An old bookstore gives me hope that people still read actual books. A homeless woman follows me into Joybird, a furniture store to find a seat. I think about a time when Whole Foods and Starbucks were a big deal to come to this city. Deep down into the metro I navigate to Northeast DC, an area I would never have visited 15 years ago because I am on a quest to sample foods at Union Market – a new epicenter for DC culinary creativity with over 40 local vendors across from Gallaudet University (a school that caters to the deaf). The industrial Union Market District looks like a former central food shipping hub. But it takes me a while to find Union Market as I end up first at La Cosecha, a market celebrating Latin American culture. I decide to sample bites from several vendors – baked spinach and cheese empanada, a fried empanada with plantain, beans, and shredded beef, and pork and cheese pupusas with a cashew drink. A little farther down, I find Union Market as I cross the road where countless diverse food stalls have me repeatedly circling the options. The place is packed with outdoor tables for people to
devour and share food that represents America’s ethnicities. We start with some dumplings from Laoban then half a corned beef and cheese sandwich from Harvey, a meat counter. I admire South Indian Dosas, Egyptian food from Fava Pot, New Orleans cuisine from Puddin’, seafood from Fishwife, products from Almaala Farms, a Korean Taco Grill, a Mozzarella Bar, and British food. On my way out, I see more men in blazers with khakis and earpieces and realize security is set up as the Vice President Kamala Harris’s husband waltzes in for lunch. Later in the day, my mom meets me as she took the train from Connecticut to join me for some food ventures. For dinner, we walk from Hotel Eaton to Succotash Prime, known for its smoked meats. In an opulent historic high ceiling-ed bank with wall murals and balconies, we are seated in a cozy booth as the restaurant fills quickly and a hundred people find their way upstairs for a party. As we watch the stream of conservative outfits, the menu dishes up southern comfort food in an elevated way reminding me where we are in the world – smack dab between the north and the south. We share the family-style extravaganza starting with a fried green tomato salad, shrimp and grits, smoked ribeye, and chicken and waffles. We have to take a break with the watermelon and toasted peanuts before continuing our feast with mac and cheese with Old Bay and chocolate bourbon pecan pie. We can barely walk out as we are stuffed to the gills but I send my mom back to the hotel as I meet an old DC friend at the newly renovated Martin Luther King Memorial Library’s rooftop terrace for a Fair Chance Butterfly Bash fundraiser. After cocktails and wine, we peruse an entire floor dedicated to DC cultural history in this impressive architectural space. From Mayor Marion Barry to DC’s music scene, it is a well-archived look at the area’s past. Before bed, I check out Allegory, a literary-inspired speakeasy bar in Hotel Eaton’s lobby. Besides the diversity of revelers sipping cocktails, most intriguing is the Alice in Wonderlandthemed wall mural painting with Ruby Bridges inserted making the viewer see or wonder what she must have felt that day as she approaches a cast of creepy/kooky characters. In another panel, she becomes all-powerful as she slays dragons. The next morning my mom and I do not head to the popular Holocaust Museum, the National Museum of African History and Culture, or the National Museum of the American Indian. If we had more time, these would make a worthwhile return visit along with the National Air and Space Museum, the Spy Museum, and even the Smithsonian. However, we cross the street from Hotel Eaton to the new Planet Word Museum housed in the historic Franklin School. As we enter, a Speaking Willow tree outside detects motion and whispers hundreds of different languages. Inside, this free immersive interactive language experience quenches my love of fun words and writing. In a couple of hours, we learn about languages around the world from interactive videos, the history of our language, word evolution, and how music and advertising use words. In the gorgeous library space with color-coded books, books miraculously come to video life with voice commands and a secret poetry corner can be found behind a door. In one room visitors can interact with a large screen to visually paint words and make the words come to life. Below the museum, we dine at Immigrant Food +, where meals are ordered online, and donations can be made to immigrant-related causes at the same time while one screen makes diners aware of local events related to immigration and immigration policies. My mom and I split a Cubano and The Kamala Harris Bowl (or Madam VP’s Heritage Bowl) with coconut-milk curried chicken, chickpeas, potatoes, pineapples, plantains, and a hint of spicy peppers served over turmeric rice and baby spinach. We tamper our ordering as we need to save room for a special 14-course dinner at Xiquet. Later in the day, we Uber to upper Georgetown to this new Michelin star earner bringing the flavors of Valencia, Spain to DC ignited by a wood-fired kitchen. The 3-level culinary symphony begins on the first-floor bar where guests’ palettes are whet with granita and oysters. Upstairs, fine white linen tablecloths await with sea cucumber delicacies, thinly sliced grilled octopus with caviar and white asparagus soup with smoked English peas – all presented as a piece of art. We watch through the glass walls as Chef Danny Lledo maneuvers the fiery flamed kitchen.
69
The evening feels like a parody or comedy of sorts as waiters walk in unison with earpieces to place each course in front of us at exactly the same moment. My mom exclaims, “Precise!” to this food dance. Memorable dishes continue to flow like Senia rice prepared paella-style with plankton and sea grapes topped with uni from Maine, oxtail with truffles and foie, wagyu from Virginia, and desserts galore crafted like mini sculptures. A wind-down finale sends us into a coma with an after-dinner drink and sugary concoctions in a wooden box on the second level but we leave appreciating the special care that went into this fine dining. The next morning my goal is to walk towards the District Wharf, a fairly new mixed-use development on the Southwest Waterfront where my mom and I plan to catch the Water Taxi from the pier down the Potomac River to Georgetown. We check into Hotel George, a Kimpton hotel in Capitol Hill, our second home for the next few nights right near the Capitol, Union Station, and the National Mall. I can’t help but think of the country’s recent chaos surrounding the Capitol. It may be a bit ambitious but I gently nudge my 76-year-old mother to walk at least 4 miles towards the wharf from the hotel. We meander through the National Mall park where monuments and memorials honor American forefathers and heroes who paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. We cruise by the Capitol and its Reflecting Pool, the Peace Monument, and end up admiring the grounds around the National Gallery of Sculpture Garden. By the National Gallery of Art with its 6-acre sculpture garden, the National Archives (with the original handwritten copies of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights), and the National Museum of Natural History (with its dinosaurs and 45.5 blue Hope Diamond), we view the National Monument in the distance poking tall like a pencil on the great lawn, a place where people have always gathered to have their voices heard. We hear the American History Museum holds the Star-Spangled Banner, the flag that inspired the national anthem as well as the original Kermit the Frog Muppet and Julia Child’s kitchen. We make it to the International Spy Museum before I need to call an Uber. At The Wharf, we pass sailboats lined on the riverfront and a mile-long stretch of newly built restaurants, retail, and entertainment venues. The Wharf is home to the nation’s longest continually operating open-air fish market featuring four piers. The Water Taxi with City Cruises (cityexperiences.com) gives us a new perspective of Washington as we pass officers’ homes, Arlington National Cemetery, the Jefferson Memorial, and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, a living memorial to the assassinated 35th president. Military planes power above us while the American flag waves and the dismal grey scenery showcases glum but stunning cloudy skies reminding me why I moved to California. It’s day 4 and I haven’t seen the sun. After a 45-minute cruise, my mom and I pass the Georgetown waterfront fountains and climb up a steep cobblestone hill by the Georgetown canals. We share a hot lobster roll that far exceeds my expectations at Mason’s Famous Lobster Rolls while the guy at the table next to us passes out in a chair in the middle of the day. After walking all over the busy streets, the fall leaves show their colors, and we sit down for an outdoor early dinner on the sidewalk at Il Canale, an Italian restaurant. I think this is the same spot Paper Moon use to exist, but inside a wood-fired pizza oven from Napoli serves crisp pizza. I watch the guy next to us devour an entire pie while my mom orders eggplant parmigiana and we rest our sore feet. We clink glasses with Aperol Spritz before ordering some of the best homemade pasta of my life with seafood marinara sauce and mushroom truffle ravioli. Inside Il Canale, photographs don the walls of all of the dignitaries and celebrities who have dined here like Emmanuel Macron’s wife, the Trumps, and many more important politicians. After a drawn-out early dinner, I check out Wolfgang Puck’s CUT bar lounge and rooftop in the Rosewood Hotel nearby before making my way back down to the waterfront pathway to find the Exorcism Steps and the area where I used to kayak and bike right under the bridge connected to the Maryland Crescent Trail. After a quick meet-up with old college friends at Tony and Joe’s, a Georgetown waterfront staple, it’s time to savor the last few hours with my mom before I escort her to the meticulously restored grand vaulted gilded Union Station the next morning. Now studded with shops and restaurants, this was the largest railroad station in the world when it opened in 1907.

Before kissing my mom goodbye, she encourages me to check out the Smithsonian National Postal Museum right next store to the train station. At first, it seems like not the best idea but I pop in since it is free and soon found myself immersed and entranced for several hours with the history of stamps and the mail system in the US. It is a dizzying array of fascinating interactive information in the historic City Post Office building and I even mail some of their free postcards
and take home some free collector stamps from around the world. The last night on my own I explore another former stomping ground of my twenties – Adams Morgan, a culturally diverse neighborhood buzzing at night with music venues, artisan cafés, vintage clothing shops, eclectic food, and now outdoor street dining. I discover another amazing local independent bookstore and smile at all the action still going on in and out of these brick row houses, once a place we drank, danced, and kissed. Club Heaven and Hell seemed to be dark and shuttered while Madam’s Organ Blues Bar was still welcoming patrons with a bouncer. I found myself inside a neoclassical 20th-century church, now the Line Hotel, with 60-foot vaulted ceilings and packed with people imbibing. Across the way, I beeline for some creamy chocolate overpriced gelato at Pitango Gelato off Columbia Road. Before heading back to Capitol Hill, I check out the sophisticated Riggs Hotel in the former “Bank of Presidents” in the Penn Quarter because travel writer friends told me about this hot cocktail bar there called Silver Lyan, the first in the US stemming from Hong Kong. In the historic bank vault, I sidle up to the one seat available at the bar because reservations are required. Silver Lyan’s menu pays homage to the spices, flavors, and traditions that make up America’s diverse cultural heritage. In the dimly lit space, I sip an American invented cocktail of the bartender’s choice while admiring glowing trophy cases filled with all-female gold sports trophies. Before my flight, I speed walk in the morning by the U.S. Capitol thinking about the mob attack that transpired just months prior and notice many STOP barricades around the area. Passing by old haunts from my past like Capitol Lounge, a sign outside quotes George Washington stating, “It is vital a man never misses lunch.” I stop to gawk at colorful row homes in various architectural styles sandwiched together with mini manicured yards. Capitol Hill Books is maybe the 5th bookstore I’ve seen around town giving me confidence that America still reads real books. Eastern Market is quite similar to how it was 15 years ago but now I see it through different eyes and realize the many African influences felt at this outdoor weekend market of local artists and crafters. Inside the great hall, indoor merchants sell produce, meats, poultry, flowers, baked goods, cheeses, and more. As I look around, I notice a cultural blending of races and ethnicities, something I wasn’t as aware of when living here. Washington, DC felt like the real America. While I was here to look back at my own life and revisit my past, visiting DC had me delving into our nation’s history to remind me of America’s greatness and the diversity of experience in this great capital city.

OJAI WEEKENDER, 5 places not to miss on your next road trip to this spiritual vortex
By Melissa Curtin Returning to Ojai is always a good idea. There’s something about this small California town – around an hour and a half from LA – that’s hard to find anywhere else in California. No wonder this haven attracts artists, musicians, nature lovers, health enthusiasts, and spiritual seekers. Inspiration is everywhere, especially in the scenery. Deep in Ventura County, 14 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean, rumor has it you may feel “high” here because everything is “living” in this idyllic nest. Revitalize your spirit in California’s spiritual vortex set in the valley of the Topa Topa Mountains where the village-like center is alive with art galleries, restaurants, and boutique shops. Hike Shelf Road above town and through the pixies Just a few minutes outside the town’s center, park on N. Signal Street to begin this rocky dirt path which winds up above town and through Ojai pixies – small tangerines only found in Ojai that beckon to be picked. Smell the fragrant orange blossoms, admire the avocado trees, and engorged citrus spilling over on the trail. This hike is a beautiful way to experience Ojai and gain perspective of the area as you meander above the town and the lush green Ojai valley. Bring water and wear sunscreen as the hike doesn’t offer much shade. Several benches allow you to pause on the trail to soak in the views and fresh air. While this trail was once charred by the ring of fire in 2017, signs of nature’s rebirth quickly surrounded the path. Instead of turning around (about 45 minutes or 1.8 miles one way) and coming back the same way, walk down the paved street (Gridley Road) at the end to pass more beautiful pixie groves, idyllic scenery, horses, and dreamy ranches. Take a right onto Grand Avenue which will lead you back to Signal Rd and your car. Sample Ojai Olive Oil on the Ranch The Ojai Olive Oil farm boasts 150-year old olive trees, including French, Italian, and Spanish varieties with some trees over 200 years old. Ojai Olive Oil is the oldest and largest producer of extra virgin olive oil in the Ojai valley. Today 2,500 trees plus neighboring olive groves are handpicked to make the exceptional extra virgin olive oil. Stop in not only to learn more about the growing, harvest, and production, but to sample numerous infused olive oil varieties such as basil, garlic, Ojai Pixie, lemon, rosemary, and Tuscan herbs. You can also find their oil at the Ojai Farmer’s Market on Sundays from 9 – 1 PM.
72
It’s impossible not to leave without taking home a few Ojai Olive Oil gifts, known for the olive’s polyphenols and brain health ingredients. They also sell a variety of balsamic vinegars – plain or infused with elements like fruits, herbs, and Espresso. Sip wine at Tipple and Ramble Head down this quiet neighborhood road to what appears to be a house; this adorable Instagram-worthy wine and cheese patio is decked out in colorful cheery retro furniture, blankets, coolers, and a vintage Airstream trailer. Linger on all afternoon with a bottle of wine or spritzers made with local pixie tangerines because it might just feel like you stepped into your best friend’s whimsical backyard. Order cheeses, charcuterie, and empanadas to accompany your imbibing. This neighborhood spot also has an eclectic shop specializing in indoor/outdoor décor, entertaining wares, and small batch specialty food items. Dine at The Dutchess For a meal you won’t ever forget, dine at this unexpected Ojai newcomer from the Rustic Canyon family. Chef Saw Naing (Tallula’s, Bouchon, French Laundry, Ysabel), once in a heavy metal band in Myanmar (formerly Burma) as a teen, left Yangon (once Rangoon) in 2007. Now he’s orchestrating the exact spices and flavors of his childhood making sophisticated dishes with Ojai’s abundant farm ingredients. During the pandemic the owners started a farm in Ojai and instead of bringing the produce back to LA, they are keeping it local – right here at The Dutchess. Located inside the historic former Ojai Bakery, The Dutchess features a variety of rooms to dine indoors as well as along the front sidewalk and a large rear patio donned with traditional Burmese paper umbrellas hung from the ceiling made from a friend of the chef’s mom. In the warm cozy room next to the bar, plants peep from the ceiling as the former bakery oven with the words, “The Dutchess” inscribed, is now a fireplace. The Dutchess calls upon Burmese-Indian menu items with California flair. The tea leaf salad and the biriyana rice dish with yogurt marinated Sonoma lamb shoulder covered in flaky pastry and herbs feels like a slice of Myanmar where I was lucky to visit in 2015. The naan reminds me of some the best in England while the chickpea fritters and assemblage of skewers (chicken meatballs, hearts, wings or beef satay) should be shared before engorging on a main course of Tikka Masala, Coconut Chickpea Curry, Tandoori Chicken, or fresh fish caught that morning charred and accompanied with a tamarind glaze. Pastry Chef Kelsey Brito is also exciting taste buds in this charming town, with a strong Indian influenced dessert menu. Split creations such as Rose Geranium Kulfi with pistachio nuts (like a creamy lighter ice cream stick), Coconut Crème Brulee, Passion Fruit Lassie Pie, and Chocolate Caramel Meringue Tart. Round out your indulgent meal with Christian’s Coquito, a dessert cocktail made with rum, Magic Hour Queen of the South, coconut, cashew, and nutmeg. Relax at The Capri Hotel Ojai While you could drive home, spend a night or two at this retro motel decked in the best mid-century modern design. Part of the Shelter Social Club family, the 1963 roadside retreat was lovingly reimagined in 2020. A warm pool, jacuzzi, and firepit are perfect for chilly nights under the stars while stunning mature plant foliage surrounds the pool and grounds. Rooms are simple in Boho Zen colors with curved wood panel details, custom wood beds, and vintage tiled bathrooms. Those with balconies offer a space to linger a morning away with the hotel’s complimentary coffee complete with 3 different milk options. Hop on a complimentary bike and whiz through the nearby town and orchards or never leave this lush property while dreaming of the next time you can return to this southern California utopia.

The Top 7 Destinations for Digital Nomads
With remote working now the norm, people across the US are being given some of the best locations for digital nomads to travel to. The term ‘digital nomads’ refers to people who work completely remote while travelling and moving to different locations across the globe. The car rental and airport transfer specialists at StressFreeCarRental.com have researched the best places to travel based on connectivity for those looking to take on the digital nomad lifestyle - and come up with a list of seven top locations to consider. Influencers and bloggers seem to be the most obvious digital nomad jobs which spring to mind. It’s important to find locations that fit with the lifestyle and unfortunately not everywhere will. Luckily for those eager to travel, there are plenty of places that do cater to the digital nomad lifestyle especially now as it’s becoming a popular way to live.

Porto is deemed to be one of the cheapest cities in Western Europe and it’s a great alternative to Lisbon if you’re after a bit more of a quieter lifestyle away from the busy city. Exploring Yosemite: Photos courtesy of Tenaya Lodge
Found on the west slope of the central Sierra Nevada Mountains in California Yosemite National Park’s enormity is both overwhelming and awe inspiring, enough to attract almost five million visitors a year and for the greatest of reasons. Standing as the third largest national park in the United States Yosemite was the birthplace of national parks when President Lincoln signed the Yosemite Land Grant on June 30, 1864. This was the first-time government protected land because of its natural beauty and because of this famous signing the United States is home to some of the grandest National Parks in the world. How about the dramatic natural event called Frazil Ice where some of Yosemite’s creeks become rushing slushies due to mist from the falls freezing and flowing down the creek in the cool spring temps? Finally, and arguably one of the most photographed sights in Yosemite National Park is when the granite rock formations glow like fire at sunset. This Season's Hot Hotels
Wildset Hotel St. Michael’s, Maryland By Kelly Magyarics Photography by Maya Oren
The latest addition to this beguiling Bayside town reimagines laid-back luxury.
St. Michaels is sometimes called “the town that fooled the British”--a reference to a battle during the War of 1812 during which its quick-thinking residents dimmed their lights and hung lanterns high in the trees so enemy troops would fire their cannons over the town. While the accuracy of that account is up for debate, what’s undeniable is the fact that this romantic waterfront town on Maryland’s Eastern Shore is certainly not one you’ll want to pass over--especially with a luxurious new boutique accommodation that serves as the perfect home base for exploring its nautical roots. The Wildset Hotel opened its doors in July 2021 with 34 rooms spread across four buildings. The main one dates back to the 1830s and is the town’s former schoolhouse; it’s joined by two buildings across the street built in the mid-to-late nineteenth century as well as an event space from the 1920s. The entire property has undergone a complete transformation by Kathryn Lager Design Studio. Now the chic rooms and common areas meld the classic and the modern, with a bright and airy feel, a wild marsh-like palette inspired by the Chesapeake and traditional accents like stark white wainscoting, gunmetal painted exposed brick, light wood and farmhouse doors, built-in seating and books, paintings and photographs by women authors and artists. Rooms feature crisp, sumptuous Parachute bedding, 100% organic Grown Alchemist bath products, and complimentary snacks and water. Some accommodations have gas fireplaces and private balconies or patios, while others include suites with sleeper sofas or sitting areas and king rooms with freestanding tubs. In the lobby, you’ll find not only a coffee bar with locally sourced beans from Ceremony Coffee, but a curated retail area that Schitt’s Creek fans may find delightfully reminiscent of Rose Apothecary, with books, candles, body products and more. Adjacent to the lobby, staff sets out local pastries, yogurt, and fruit each morning for breakfast each morning. If the weather is mild, take an afternoon tea (or sunset glass of wine) to the front porch or your private balcony, or head to the backyard during a starry evening to toast s’mores in one of the fire pits. An outdoor pool is slated to be ready this spring. Seafood-focused dining concept Ruse--whose name is an homage to that trick local residents played on the British--is a melange of coastal flavors from the Mid-Atlantic, New England and West Coast. Start with some just-shucked Virginia Whitestone oysters from the raw bar, but don’t overlook their roasted counterparts topped with funky, spicy fermented chili butter and crunchy garlic breadcrumbs, or local yellowfin tuna tartare with Marcona almonds. A cast-iron skillet of Maryland crab gratin arrives at the table still bubbling, the warm, crusty baguette ready to be ripped and used to break through the gooey white cheddar crust to all that succulent shellfish underneath, and slices of Crescent Farms duck breast are perched atop honeynut squash puree, grilled baby artichoke, Manzanilla olive and smoked duck jus. The modern cocktails are elegant and aromatic, like the delicate Blanche with vodka, quince eau de vie, rosé vermouth and fresh ginger, and Ringo, with Japanese whisky, Becherovka, Fuji apple, lime and Angostura Bitters. And the wine list is peppered with eclectic expressions including zesty Txakolina from Spain, Pinot Blanc from Germany’s Pfalz region and a juicy Austrian Zweigelt. During your stay, soak in the town’s charm with a stroll along the shops and boutiques, down the cobblestone side streets to get a glimpse at the historic homes of this former shipbuilding area, or to sip a spirited beverage at Lyon Rum Distillery or St. Michaels Brewery. Save some time for outdoor pursuits like a bike along the water or sail on the Bay. No matter where the day takes you, though, the best part will be returning to your welcoming, cozy escape on Talbot Street.
