Elwood House Brighton, Melbourne 11/2017 - Current $0.7m

Being a heritage-listed home with red bricks & tile roof, this design answers the client’s brief for a minimal intervention to the existing garden space and building kids rooms into the existing roof space. We answered with a design that maximizes northern daylight penetration into the home, doubling the usable outdoor space & integrating louvre-screens to protect from excessive sunlight while ensuring privacy from the neighbours. The interiors were an interplay between a muted, clean palette with accents of lux & colour.

Located in the leafy eastern suburb of Balwyn, the proposal materializes 2 ideas; organic & geometric, soft and hard. The project seeks to stand out from the numerous developments in the area, giving the developer the highest possible yield from sales of a exquisite & unique apartment design with exemplar amenity. 2 courtyards maximize northern light into the units, & the arches create a rhythm unlike any other along the Whitehorse Road streetscape. (16500m2 / 94 units)

Located just a few hundred meters from Sorrento beach & a short walk from the retail strip, the solutions for Serenity came out of a process of exploration, iteration and investigation that marries the client’s demanding brief with a difficult site. A combination of natural stone, dark metal, silver metal, glass & landscaping gives the development a touch of lux & whimsy that complements the area.

Rivage Apartments Sorrento, Melbourne 05/2017-current $5m

‘Rivage: archaic. A coast, shore, or bank’. Initially conceived as east-west facing units, the project was rotated after getting a knock back at council. However, Rivage 2.0 was replanned as 8 larger units that now face north-south with a central courtyard, breaking the horizontal mass of the building. A coastal palette of rough stone, render, well-articulated timber screens & bronze metal-work round-off this simple proposal. FACADE ARTICULATION

Zoned as a key retail & entertainment site, the proposal’s aspirations were to provide a high quality mixed-use development that responds both to the local context & wider Berwick Town Centre urban framework. The scale of the site called for a strong urban approach. An ‘urban wall’ was conceived as a unifying object, wrapping like a ribbon throughout the 100m length of the site, presenting dominance to the frontage & a sense of permanence to bustling Lyall Road. Within the framework, an injection of retail is scattered along the ground plane, with commercial & residential split amongst 4 separate buildings that formally provide ideal permeability for pedestrian density & flow. The success of the proposal was reflected by the sale of the residential units that were sold-out within the first week of release. (RETAIL - 2500m2, COMMERCIAL 4600m2, 30 SERVICED APARTMENTS, 21 APARTMENTS)

Oakover Square Rail & Mixed-Use Development Preston, Melbourne 04/2016 - Current $250m

In 2014, BALDASSO CORTESE submitted a proposal to redevelop an abandoned Australian Post site of 10000m2 (2.5 acres) into a vibrant mixed-use development. In 2016, IN LINE WITH THE VISION OF CREATING A TRULY transit-oriented HUB, we proposed extending the site area to the south & west (an additional 7000m2) to incorporate a railway station, ENSURING AN INCREASE IN ITS Value & pedestrian density. Various iterations led to the OUTCOME TO PLACING THE RAILWAY TRACKS underground. ABOVE IT, a platform of retail & commercial programs WERE INTEGRATED TO ADD COMMERCIALITY & MORE DIVERSITY TO THE PROPOSAL.

The neighbourhood site is part of 6 nodes in the Jubilee Housing Development. Being the first, the developer wanted to ensure critical mass through the provision of lifestyle & community facilities in preparation for the influx of residents. Part and parcel of the development, a beautifully landscapd lake, 120 place childcare with a generous north facing courtyard, an anchor retail building, aquatic centre & market building. Tying the concept together are a series of floating skillion roofs, giving each building an identity and iconic nature speeding down the main highway at speed. 01 ---

Huntingtower Performing Arts Centre Mount Waverley, Melbourne 06/2014 - 03/2018 $13m

The brief called for the creation of a world class performing arts stage that complements the newly constructed primary school to conceive a landmark entry building to the school. Inspired by the Bishop Edward King Chapel by Niall McLaughlin Architects, the horseshoe drum shape served as the purest form for optimal acoustics while the sweeping curve of the white tiled facade merge and create a human scaled welcome for visitors, teachers and students. Inside, timber was used as a key material giving warmth to the interiors

Clifton Views Integrated Care Hub Clifton Hill, Melbourne 08/2014 - Current $35m

Typical aged care developments generally consist of a single or double storey building in a sprawling piece of land. Clifton Views’ proposal however was the first of its kind in the southern hemisphere, a vertical typology for aged care development in the inner suburbs of Clifton Hill. The building is constructed of precast concrete panels, post tensioned slabs with Clay Louvres to the facade on L3-L7, and curtain wall glazing to levels 8-9.

With a facility for all ages in mind, the hub holds a 150 bed facility, 80 place childcare, private gym & pool. The building was planned around 2 courtyards (1 public & 1 private), cascades with the site, & features an architectural language of hard edged modular polished precast panels that casts a different silouhette at different times of the day. The Guggenheim Helsinki draws from the dichotomy between urbanity, culture and nature. The proposed site is reclaimed land, a zone of transition – a mythical “inbetween world”. The museum of the 21st century is no longer one volume dedicated to the display of art but the building itself is the canvas for art and people. Our focus is the transition from urban “density to openness” and “solidity to transparency.” We use the notion of the city grid to transition the ‘forest’ to the harbour.
