Federation Square, a condensed public node & urban boulevard, juxtaposed alongside heritage jewels namely St Paul’s and Flinders Station, generates great potential for the exploration of ingenious spatial scenarios. This project therefore aspired to breathe vitality and add another dimension of civic space, accomodating human movement & interaction on street level.

MELBOURNE PLANETARIUM
A new theatre designed specifically to support various interpretations of the doll play; located in a Carlton vernacular setting and the transition between two vibrant and cultural nodes (Melbourne University/Italian food district & the Art precinct)
RAY LAWLER’S SUMMER OF THE SEVENTEENTH DOLL
DOLL THEATRE Architecture Design Studio 4
grad_studio_Unimelb
Ray Lawler’s Summer of the Seventeenth doll, an evocative play based in local vernacular of Carlton, Melbourne. Exploring the lives of two couples, who spend 5 months a year (the layoff) together and the other 7 working in the sugarcane fields. They were content with this arrangement until the 17th year, when circumstances brewed, evoking drastic change in the couple’s lives and routine
themes & materiality
site & conceptual generators
central growth
Roo, who had health problems and competition from the youth at the cane-fields had to abruptly end the ideal arrrangement, creating a drastic flux in his life and partner Olive. Roo’s friend, Barney, too had to undergo a similar situation, where his previous partner, Nancy got married, with Pearl accomodating as her replacement.

‘This 17th summer is going to be different’
contained expansion
carlton vernacular - red brick
the object of flux - evoking nostalgia
= disjunction l ‘containing the flux’
Breaking with old traditions and habits is never easy. I believe it is difficult to undergo change, even though change might seem necessary. Often we resist this flux that all of us under-go at certain life periods, concealing it within an inner-facade. It is this sense of disjunction between circumstances and deed, & this struggle to ‘break-free’ from defying idealistic change, that is conceptually integrated into this theatre design, that sequentially helps derive programmatic ideals itself fusing into the ever important Carlton vernacular.
OUTDOOR BAR “...red brick and cane inspired elements (printed on glass & slender pilotis) used to evoke feelings of being in a field, triggering nostalgia...”

THEATRE EXPERIENCE
The experience, triggered once a visual connection is made with the theatre. Structure, material & program meld to enhance the entire theatre-going experience, creating a journey of the senses and mind, preparing one for actual play itself.
OPEN STAGE l mini-PROSCENIUM
The circular configuration renders greater intimacy & connection between audience and performer, while allowing for an option to utilize the proscenium stage + freedom to optimize seat configurations on the floor
