Inspiration

Empathy is the ability to understand and share feelings and experiences of others. It is a key element of emotional intelligence and is the connection with individuals and others. However, in some aspects of our lives, we interact with people who seem to lack empathy.

Position

My design area is an "interactive exhibition." I would like to provide a relaxing and enjoyable place for visitors to easily understand the theme of the artwork. Visitors carrying different stress of life, trouble, problem and worry, when walking through the whole journey of this funny design area, all these negative emotions can have the time and way to relieve and release.

Objective

We usually use our own impression to define other people or even judge them. However, this attitude and behaviour really ignore the feelings and human nature of others. Through this exhibition, I would like to have the visitors realized that there are different points of view in seeing and thinking things. If we want to understand each other thoroughly, we need to observe and perceive other people's perspectives.

Work

“Same Old, Brand New is the new work of artist Cao Fei (1978, Beijing) - created for Hong Kong's iconic ICC building - citing video games mainly from the 1980s, these games are very popular and have become teenager culture not only in Hong Kong but also the rest of the world. Using these games into my design, when visitors come to the interactive exhibition, they can free their mind to play and accept those interesting artworks. Through the interaction, let visitors aware the design meaning lies.

APPROACH

Photo

Life just likes playing puzzles divided into many small pieces. We make a choice and sometimes the piece falls into place perfectly. However, if the piece does not fit the place, we cannot move on. Then we have to patiently find the right puzzle to complete. Somehow, this puzzle seems vague and seems to be missing or incomplete. Besides, playing the puzzle game is good for our health, especially for brain-training and hand-eye-coordination. Playing this game gives us a sense of calm and serenity. Besides, we have to focus our mind when playing, this also help relieve external stress and worries. Base on the two causes above, I use the Soma puzzle as my floor plan approach.

PROCESS & DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

Model

This conceptual model is about how do you experience this space. Every time only two people can go through this balancer, they need to cooperate in order to maintain balance at the same position and height, such as the empathy need to stand in the position of others to understand the thoughts and feelings of others. Without empathy, your understanding of other people will only limit to the first impression of the person.

2

We often use the impression of people to define others, even to identify them, but this acting usually ignores the feelings and nature of others. therefore the second design included two spaces, and using a road to connect both inside and outside. At outside, you can see the world around, but only from the narrow window to see part of the picture and the visitors. When you are willing to step inside, you can understand the whole picture, and realize how is the world outside through this narrow window.
