Vocational courses

Why should I choose a vocational course? Vocational courses have been developed in partnership with employers, to ensure that you learn the skills that are relevant for your chosen industry. This type of study allows you to learn the technical and professional skills which will demonstrate to employers that you are work-ready, whilst also offering a suite of transferrable skills, such as team work and communication. With a vocational course, you will be studying one main course, alongside English and maths if you need to. This means you can focus on the area you like most and are best at, enabling you to specialise in the area of study where your career ambitions lie.

If you choose to study a vocational qualification you will: • Gain real, hands-on experience and the skills that today’s employers are looking for • Be continually assessed via coursework and practical projects, as well as examinations

Core Units

These are units you must study that will give you a broad understanding of your course.

Optional Units Optional units enable you to focus on a particular area of interest.

Assignments

Written assignments that are project or activity based.

• Gain a recognised qualification • Progress into employment, further and/or higher education.

Exams End of unit exams.

What can I do when I finish my vocational course? After you complete your course you can progress on to the next level course, on to university or into a career. Our careers advisers based at each campus will enable you to understand the grades you need to progress on to a higher education course, apprenticeship or job.

Vocational courses

Apply for a place at university with a level 3 vocational qualification. Did you know that a quarter of students starting at university will have studied a BTEC qualification at level 3? A qualification at level 3 is the equivalent of studying A Levels. In fact, the BTEC National Extended Diploma achieved at Triple Distinction grade attracts 360 UCAS points, equivalent to three A Levels at grade A!

Name: Lucy Ford Course: Applied Science Level 3 Lucy secured a place to study midwifery at the University of Chester after completing our applied science course. "Studying at Warrington & Vale Royal College was the stepping stone I needed to get to university. My confidence has grown massively as a result of my time at the college and the tutors are really supportive."

Apprenticeships

Why should I choose an apprenticeship? Work for an employer, earn money and gain a nationally recognised qualification! To get your career started you usually need a combination of experience and qualifications. An apprenticeship gives you both by combining on-the-job training whilst studying in college (usually one day a week), so that you can earn while you learn.

Choose us because: • We are the best at what we do. Over 73% of our young apprentices fully achieve their apprenticeship, which is 5% ABOVE the national average. Also, at least 9 out of 10 of our apprentices continue in employment or receive a promotion once they have finished their apprenticeship • We match your skills to an employer • Our experienced team will work with you and guide you through your apprenticeship • We will closely monitor your progress and maintain good dialogue with your employer.

Name: Ryan Kenny Course: Advanced Apprenticeship in IT When Ryan Kenny enrolled on to an apprenticeship at Warrington & Vale Royal College, he had no idea just how much his life was about to change. Now, the 18year-old has the world at his feet and an exciting career ahead of him with Stanley Black & Decker, after being named both BTEC Apprentice of the Year and Warrington Business Awards Apprentice of the Year. “I would like to thank both Stanley and Warrington & Vale Royal College for their support throughout my apprenticeship and helping me get to where I am today.”

A Levels with a difference

English Literature

History

English Language explores topics associated with English Language such as how we acquire it from birth, how it varies in different regions and how English is structured. If you are interested in why people talk and write like they do, or are curious about the social and historical contexts in which texts are produced, you would really enjoy studying English Language.

If you enjoy reading and discussing literature, you will enjoy this course. You will gain a detailed understanding of a broad range of poetry, prose and drama, while developing different critical approaches which can be used in reading and analysis. It is therefore essential that you are prepared to read independently.

A Level History examines a variety of topics within two specific historical periods covering approximately 200 years. Utilising primary resources as well as a variety of differing interpretations from leading academics, you will be encouraged to develop your own critical-thinking skills alongside a more in-depth appreciation of these interesting and important episodes in history.

Studying English Language particularly complements studies of English literature, media studies and psychology.

Many students who do A Level English Literature go on to study degrees in English, history and law as well as various subjects relating to the media/creative industries, the social sciences and education.

A Levels

English Language

Studying history develops many transferrable skills that are much sought after in industry and higher education. The study of history complements many other A Level combinations including English, sociology and psychology.
