After looking at the recent sketches that I did , I finally selected my final design. My design follows modernism and is very clean cut and straight lines, my design consisted of different thickness of lines. As part of the tutorials with Stevie , we started to look at creating are typefaces on Illustrator which I was sort of curious about as I’ve never created my own before. I started to create it on Illustrator by using different size strokes for the lines , I used 2pt and 1pt , the reason why I did them so small is so you couldn’t see a massive change to the letters and looked stupid. I started to create it but as I was , Stevie pointed out at the bottom of some letters for example ‘A’ that the straight lines had to be slanted and to do so I had to select the object and select expand which allowed me to edit selected points. Even though this looks a minimalistic type I still had to think about certain things as I was using straight lines what shape was my letters going to be and what lines was going to be thick and which was going to be thin. I decided on that the left hand line would be the thickest to make it stand out. Below I have sourced images of sketch , 1st attempt and the final.
Street Graphics was are first brief. We was asked to interpret what the streets meant to us. I started looking at the background of the streets and artists that worked within the streets themselves to help me understand the meaning of ‘Street Graphics’ I started researching into other cultures and the most common street art ‘Grafitti’ This was the most common but didnt mean much understanding to me. I started looking into memorials and how people can be remembered on the streets , I wanted to portray street art in a good way other than bad that everyone else does. Unfortunatley one of my friends had passed away and there was a huge Memorial that was done for him under a bridge were other artists was allowed to show their work , Although I didnt want to go down through Graffiti it was something that became so important to me. I started to look at other ways of how people was remember in the streets ,
which I came across Shrines , remebering benches and statues to rember the people we’ve lost. I wanted to create a piece of work in a way the I would rember my friends. I began to start testing out by cutting a used image of someone and creating multiple tests on coloured paper using spray paint myself. I wanted to create a book with images of places that I had memories with my friend with images layered to show the importance. After doing tests with my stencils I then started to work on them in photoshop. with my pieces of work I started to use the photocopy machine to create new images of my work by moving them and layering them on which then created beautiful tests out. I cut out the important information that I wanted for example his name , D.O.B and . I wanted this to be a form of posters that would be represented in the places that we lived and was together.
My final design on my Earth Artifact was based around the idea of a survival guide for aliens if they was to come on earth. I wanted to portray my idea through sumbols that represent things to survive. My inital idea was to be just the main five things that we need to survie but after research I then started to create it as a guide for places to go for food , water , shelter , supplies and education as they were the main five survival guides that we need to survive.
Curosity Cabinet of curoisty was a personal project that related to me. The idea behind my final design was linked to ‘Re-Incarnaton’ As I’m lead to beleive in many times my Grandad is a butterfly and thats my memory of him. I started to look into the pandora box about how something good on the outside but bad on the inside but decided to change the theory of having a old box that almost represents death and life on the inside. The theory behind my work it so have a number of butterflies to represent the amount of times that Ive seen a specific b utterfly. which I have used stencil butterflys in a contained area to represent keeping thatmemory alive the reason for that box is because I wanted different section to represent .I started off with my experiments by using jars and other different size boxes which then changed the size of the butterfly.
For part of are theory work , We was asked to create and design are own manifesto about what we think of Graphic Design, In my manifesto I decided to create one of how I think about design itself explaining the good and the bad sides to everything. In my chosen design I decided to pick a few selected lines that I really liked to create my manifesto. Design is all around us without us even knowing. We rely on designers more than we think to create things we use in every day life ; Business cards , Logos , Advertisements , Magazines , Leaflets , Adverts , Cards. We use these to find out information and to tell a message. I feel others are oblivious to how much we need it. As a practicing designer I feel we are ignored for are many talents that we have learnt. Cards,CrispPacket,ShopFronts,Cars,RoadSigns,ShopFronts,Posters,CDCovers,DogFood,FoodPackets.Prints,LogoDesign,Fonts,Images,Animations,Book Covers,Packaging,BusTickets. These are many of more things we don’t realise that one of us have designed for us. Creativity may come easy, but creation is hard. We like to create something for everyone to allow us to project a message of knowledge for the rest of the world to see . We like to make heads turn making people look twice Either for bad or good people tend to remember the bad more than the good . We allow others to inspire and like to inspire others. We are forever learning new techniques as times change , people’s opinions change. Its never a failure its about improving things allowing ideas to be better than the last ones. Not everything should be understood but just simply loved. Creating is never easy and problems always occur. Computer Crashing , Computer wont turn on , Loose Memory Stick , Work Suddenly disappears , Forget to save , Printer runs out of ink , Printer breaks , Charger breaks , Cant open programmes , cant find something. Its not about waiting for it to come to you , it’s about going out and chasing your dream. A designers brain never switches off , you’re forever thinking, wondering and asking “what if..?”. Always think outside the box , separate yourself from others. Make yourself original and be a individual. Stand out!
