“ A CONVERSATION” BY LAURA LAW

BRIEF Project/Assessment task : ‘A Conversation” We habeen asked to create a contemporary portfolio piece that is formed by the project ‘A conversation’. We have to produce ambitious research that links to development of my ideas supporting my final piece that allows the audience to understand why I did everything from my research to final design. What’s the mostnimpoortant conversation for today? What’s the most important conversation for the future? Who will you speak to? These are the questions that came into my head when I started to begin my ideas. We were given starting points on were to start working from. - Visualising a conversation between yourself and technology (Iphone - External , Political or social conversations -Interrogating the movment of a physical activity. Football match. A walk in the park From the list of ways we can process are work in , I chose from the following options -Poster -Manifesto -Capaign Poster

A form of interaction and communication between 2 or more people Magazines - Gossip

Phone calls Speeches - A conversation to a group or audience of people

Non Important Conversations -Gossip -Friends

A CONVERSATION

Important conversations -Interviews -Police , ambulance etc -Hostpital -Work -Bank Text messages

Conversation in person

IDEAS

Exploring different vocabuary due to age that changes how you speak to one another

Writing on the coffee cup exploring different languages and relating the design of cup to the language

Converting a political speech into a conversation that working class would be able to understand

A CONVERSATION

How conversations change with the influence of alcohol .. maybe lead to a drink awarness campaign

Looking at advert campaigns for politians but re-do them using slang/ working class to reach the audience Volumes on conversations in different places for example youll talk quietly on public transport but in the pub youll shout.

For my idea of comparing the difference of conversations that you have with your friends to the ones you have with their grandparents etc. I then start to think about what the common topic that you would have with all different types of people. I started brain storming and one of my ideas was to have the topic

morals weather

cultures politics

relationships

Gossip

My first idea was to create conversations in a coffee shop , to find out what we actually talk about over a coffee etc. I started to think about the Starbucks idea of writing on the cup your name to make it more personal to you which I then thought what if the conversation that you had over that coffee with it maybe personal towards them or yourself and it was written on the cup for everyone to see. This was to see what conversations happen in certan places , would you have the same conversation youd have in your house in a public place? were everyone can hear?

This as another piece of work that was found on pinterest. There wasnt actually an artist that had created it but was lfound on www. vendelaydesign.com which I found very interesting and very simialar to what Idea that i was looking at. I like this piece of work because at first glance of the image you just simply see two cips and then once you look again it was more apparent that you could see the work.

This design was found on lovelypackage.com which was designed by Nimrat Brar and was found on Pintrest. The Idea is very similar to my idea that I wanted to do. These coffee cups was designed for a pop up event and the theme that was used was the conversations that you have over a coffee. They have used symbols to represent the topics that they are tallking about. Its very simple illustrations that have been hand drawn they have used very basic colour scheme that is white and silver but its still efective and is created as a good design. They have also used a speech bubble with the title ‘Coffee talk. My aim was to actually write the conversations on the cup or part of or even just a few words to explain part of the conversation. This is very similar to my idea but prehaps for a different concept.

My second idea was based on the way we change are vocab and topic of conversations depending on the person that we are talking to for example we speak different from the way we speak to are friends to are grandparents or even the way we speak to children. I wanted to explore this in typography as it is a interest of mine.

Were would the conversation take place? -Public transport -Grandmas house -Coffee Shop - On the street

In a session with Darren we was taught about a design process that allowed us to help generate multiple ideas down to the idea that you wanted to generate as your final outcome. I used a shorted version to quickly help my idea expand.

Comparing different vocab used on different people. How you change the way you speak and what you say depending on who you are talking to.

Speak the same way you would to your friends but to your grand parents

What if your grandparents were the king and queen?

Instead of talking subtle or quietly you shout everything you speak.

My third idea was based on a political view, looking into way politicans speak to each type of class. As we already know they almost try and dumb themselves down to be able to speak to the working class which doesnt exactly work. My idea was to begin looking at polictical speech and try re phrasing it to the general public allowing them to understand. I also thought about a creating campaign adverts that work and dont work. The common theme with a politcian campaign they have a one line slogan and I thought i could work with that.

This morning I want to talk about the future of Europe. But first, let us remember the past. Seventy years ago, Europe was being torn apart by its second catastrophic conflict in a generation. A war which saw the streets of European cities strewn with rubble. The skies of London lit by flames night after night. And millions dead across the world in the battle for peace and liberty. As we remember their sacrifice, so we should also remember how the shift in Europe from war to sustained peace came about. It did not happen like a change in the weather. It happened because of determined work over generations. A commitment to friendship and a resolve never to revisit that dark past – a commitment epitomised by the Elysee treaty signed 50 years ago this week. After the Berlin Wall came down I visited that city and I will never forget it. The abandoned checkpoints. The sense of excitement about the future. The knowledge that a great continent was coming together. Healing those wounds of our history is the central story of the European Union. What Churchill described as the twin marauders of war and tyranny have been almost entirely banished from our continent. Today, hundreds of millions dwell in freedom, from the Baltic to the Adriatic, from the Western Approaches to the Aegean. And while we must never take this for granted, the first purpose of the European Union – to secure peace – has been achieved and we should pay tribute to all those in the EU, alongside Nato, who made that happen.

I began looking at politican speeches for one of my ideas to be able to access my ideas

I Began to look at kinetic typograhy as I thought it would be a good way to express my idea and be able to include imagery and be able to combine motion graphics aswell

Kinetic typography is a form of animation also known for ‘moving text’ this techniqe allows animators to move and edit text together and be able to express ideas and emotion together allowing them to be shown through the right method. This is normally created on programmes like after effects. I started looking into what kinetic typography was mainly used for and it was used for many of things for example ,Film introductions but now has become a big impact in the advertising industry for television and is mostlyused for tv adverts. Also some that i have looked at have been used for marketing purposes also. Some just use text others use images or both. I began to look at a series of different ones that have been posted on the internet. One that is a well known one was for the film ‘Fight Club’ Which uses Kinetic typograhy at the beging of the film to introuduce it.

I Started looking into Kinetic typography and started to look at ones that had been created. This one was created by a student who was studying about the ‘Pulp Fiction’ Wich is a film. I liked this one because it had the same theme going through out the Kinetic , Although this student has just used typograhy they have made it interested with the layout of the text and background that gives its interesting design. They also used a voice over from a scene in Pulp ficition which I think it goes well with the typography as the type face enthasises the way he is speaking and changed when others are speaking I just feel it has a good sense of connection of what the student is trying to persue.

I started looking at still images of kinetic typography because as a graphic designer and within the process I am more likely to work with an animator and give a story bored of my kinetic typography design. I chose a few that exampled the movement but is still image.

Through previous design work I became interested in manifestos and how the use typography and layouts within the manifestos. A manifesto is someone who writes about their thoughts and intentions about a specific subject or area that they are interested in.It is almost a idea. One of my other ways to create my idea was in a form of a manifesto. I was going to look at having a conversation with different age groups for example with a child and respond the typeface and colours to that age group or with your grandparents and you would have the typeface very plain but in large like they have the large buttons on the phone so there able to see them clearly.

A source of finding my research was Pintrest were I found a series of manifestos that was discovered on www.smilecollective.myshortify. com and was added by Veronica Marchin. This is something similar to what I wanted to create however this is about how children should be living there life. I liked the way how ordinary manifestos can be very plain and boring with just text. However this one has used imagery which leads me to beleieve that they should be doing. I like how even though its just simple typface they still highlight the fun/ important words that they want to be seen. I do feel that becuase it is aimed at children that make a use of colour should of been used but Overall I love this manifesto.

This is another Childrens manifesto that has been written by a group of children from Austrailia. This manifesto talks about the topic ‘Play’ It includes what ‘Play’ is and were they would like to play etc. It is in a list of headings with supporting bullet points explaining vaild reasons to the headings. Ive not seen a manifesto is design but I was very interested with the hands that created the border for the manifesto. It have a fun and energy feel to the work.

This manifesto was along side of the manifesto for children. This one is for the grandmothers. The type face that has been used is very plain , calligraphy or old english writing. Also some of the text is in capital letters and also spread out , this may indicate the age of the audience to allow them to be able to read it better with due to being old age your eye sight isnt as good as what it use to be. Even though this manifesto isnt a conversation itseld its highlighting the importance of what a grandmother is all about. I am only looking at the typeface that has been used.

I was searching on pintrest typefaces and I came across this typeface that was created. It was letters that was created from tape from cassetts. I thought this had a strong connection with conversations as you used tapes and CD’s to record music , conversations etc. I really liked the design of how simple it has been put together at first I didt see what I had

I disovered this artist Martha Rich on behance site who is a Philadelphia based artist who enjoys the work of fine art including drawing and painting and using words within his work , he also has a love for including food into his work . This captured my eye with it being very colourful and made me want to read what each individual speach bubble had in it. Martha started collecting words from over heard conversations from being out , looking at advertisments that he liked and texts that he had ready , he also looked at old magazines aswell. His work is very collage based with a mix of mediums like paint , hand drawn and cut out outs from magazines.

I began to start looking at the colour theory and began to look at how it links. A sone of my ideas was about talking differently to a different age group I started to think about how the colours may define the age group for example you use bright colours for children to allow it be fun and exciting. For older age there very butural colours and softer shades and for middle age group as myself I find myself having a mixture of both but I feel it depends on the seasonal colours itself

Development And Research Into Idea 3

With my choosing to show my idea through typography I decided to look into different typefaces that link to the certain conversations. Here I have started looking to fonts that relate to children to source my information I began by looking at childrens websites , and front covers of books to look at the way they type and colours that have been used.

I also went onto typeface websites to look at different fonts that they class as children fonts. From looking on different sites and books they either use very old plain typeface or its very bold or bubble type. Alot of style I saw was almost a hand drawn style that looks to be written in crayon type , to me when you see that you straight away think ‘Children’ or a child has written that. I want the typeface speak out who i’m talking to without actually saying it

I started to look into fonts that would relate to grandparents aswell and the size that I would , I started searching the internet for typeface sizes for poor eye sight. Personal opinion I would of thought that that was a good link to being able express my design.

I also started looking into typeface to relate to the youth. As someone young myself I prefer the style of very modern and quirky typefaces. With this one I thought about how I could make it look different to the rest and I thought about using slang/text talk to make it stand out from the others and be able to make a it clearer to see the difference.

HI U OK ? WUU2? UK? NM U? LOL LMAO LMFAO ROFL SMH IKR DO YA KNOW ? BRB

I discovered this Think capaign advert that was done by direct.gov in 2009 about adults using mobile phones whilst crossing the road that children will copy you. To show this they have used it through typograhy. This relates to my work as they have used the idea of different typefaces that understand the work. They have used plain new times roman font and underneath its a child who has copied the above sentence in crayon. This is a sense of a child being back at school and having to copy what the teach has written , its explaing that children will copy things that you do. I would like to do something similar in my work , prehaps having the child copying the conversation in a different way.

My original idea was to create pieces of work based on the way people spoke but after researching my idea has changed to base the typeface to be linked to who I’m speaking to. allowing the typeface to express the audience. Also using the sizeing to explain it for them.

With looking at the advert I decided to mock up my own. I created this in Photoshop and Illustrator combining both programmes. Instead of copying what I put I used the same style but to demonstrate the conversation between me and my nephew , I used similar typeface for the child like. Going back to one of the manifesto for children they had used illustrations to go with the manifesto , I feel that it gives a more fun feel to it. This was my first attempt at designing this type of style. I dont feel its a strong piece to select as a final design as it needs alot more developing.

This is one of my designs that I have created. Ive based this around a conversation with my grandma that I recorded. I chose old english fonts to represent the age of my grandma to make it easier. My grandma talks alot and doesnt give me chance so to interpurt that I have put my words very small to show importance. Ive also expanded some words to go with the way they was spoken. Going back to the childrens manifesto I liked the idea of imagery been within the manifesto . Although this isnt an accurate manifesto I have decided to include images instead of words that are noticable for people to understand what I mean. With the colour scheme ive added very soft colours of what my grandma actually likes.
