Spellbound explores a pallet of timbres. It begins with airy, enchanting washes of sound, progresses to trancelike marimba rhythms with a hovering saxophone melody, and then wanders through jazz-like riffs and rock-like grooves. A few extended techniques accent the work. In the saxophone, harmonics and tremolos that produce a spectrum of overtones are used, and in the marimba, muting techniques and modified mallets are featured. The title is reminiscent of that of a jazz-tune, and it also originates from the mysterious quality of the extended techniques.
