This project, undertaken on the MA Typo/Graphics course at LCC/UAL, established my interest in developing work of a geo/graphic nature. New Basford is an area north of Nottingham city centre that was established through the burgeoning lace industry. It is an area that is predominantly filled with two up, two down terraces, some light industrial units (built following a ‘slum clearance’ programme) and a few remaining Victorian factory buildings. It is a place that one tends to pass through, rather than being a destination in itself—on face value it is a typical inner city area suffering from the usual problems of unemployment, graffiti and general deprivation. I wanted to develop work that probed beneath the surface of New Basford, going beyond the seemingly identikit streets and houses, and attempting to represent a sense of place. My methodology was that of the anthropologist, seeking out signs and interventions of a low-tech, personal and vernacular nature. These were recorded and used to develop a series of maps charting non-traditional elements such as graffiti, decorative brick features and memories. The maps (approx 900mm square) were produced on translucent stock that enabled two different maps to be overlaid and further conclusions drawn.
Alison Barnes - Geo/Graphic Mapping - 2003
The graffiti territory map reveals patterns of movement across the area. Some authors remain very local, perhaps only spreading across one or two roads; others travel further within the area. Through charting the graffiti, this map reveals the spatial activity of groups of friends; a bully targeting specific individuals; a foot fetishist; and, a politically motivated, left wing author.

Eric Tabuchi - Typologies
Eric Tabuchi, 1959, France, is a true collector. He has released several books amongst which are Alphabet Truck and Twentysix Abandoned Gasoline Stations. He has made two series of the trucks and three with gasoline stations. In his works that he calls Typologies he shoots photographs of, for example, smalltown Chinese restaurants, French countryside skateparks or bizarre road signs. He makes an impressive amount of these images and thus creates an archive of the various subjects. The following images come from his editions Alphabet Truck vol.2, Twentysix Recycled Gasoline Stations and Twentysix Abandoned Gasoline Stations and from various of his Typologies.

Interactivity
Death Of The Author
The word interactivity is a term that is widely used, however it can sometimes be misinterpreted (Neves, 2013). Interaction design can relate to digital, computer based media or tablet devices as well as printed experiences. Neves (2013) suggests that designers only think of it in terms of websites. In fact, interactivity is a characteristic of communication and is not just about its overall visuals, it is essentially about performance (Neves, 2013) as Rafaeli (1988) discusses below:
Roland Barthes is the author of the essay Death Of The Author. The essay explores the power of the author and considers how this is affected by the power of the reader (Barthes, 1998). Barthes (1998) suggests that the reader is given the option to more or less ignore the works background including the author, their lifestyle and their hobbies and instead, the reader is made to focus purely on the work itself (Barthes, 1998). The point made here by Barthes (1998) is that the responsibility of the text is held by the reader rather the author. This allows the reader to suggest whether the text is a success or a failure (Barthes, 1998).
“We may understand it, in a broad sense, as the alternating transmission between two parts of a communication relationship. A message sent is related to a previously received one. If this relationship takes place between a person and an object, interactivity relates to the behaviour of the object as experienced by the person. As a result, interactivity is a feature present at the moment of use and different from the object’s visual aspect.” (Rafaeli, 1988). Here, the point that Rafaeli (1988) is trying to make is that interactivity is a behaviour and only occurs when the reader makes contact with the printed or digital outcome. The relationship that takes place between the work and the user is established in a certain time frame, no matter the object or its use (Neves, 2013). Interactivity is a key element within printed publications particularly for Visual Editions, and as digital outcomes are introduced, the notion of interactivity for print begins to get lost.
The personal experiences that the author writes about in their work is completely reduced from three-dimensional to two-dimensional by the time that the information reaches its audience. This allows the readers to make their own narrative and as Barthes (1998) suggests, the origins of the work may at first lie with the author themselves, but its ultimate destination lies with the reader. “… The birth of the reader must be at the cost of the death of the Author.” (Barthes 1998).

- Propositions
1 - There are endless possibilities when it comes to paper. 2 - I will push the boundaries with paper.
3 - Paper can become a 3D, solid structure. 4 - All of my concepts will contribute towards my final product - A book of possibilities. 5 - Interactivity is key - letting the reader handle the publication/book for themselves, tearing, folding, creasing etc to create personal/individual outcomes. Playful. 6 - A book is more than just a series of pages. 7 - Physicality over digital - Having a tactile outcome will show the importance of editorial design for me personally. Textures, smell, binding all play a part in this. 8 - The book will be an experience, show a journey for the reader - Personal.
