I continued this semester by experimenting with materials, textures and loose threads as these were the main areas of focus in the concept module. I have experimented with a wealth of materials and attempted to make as many marks and textures as possible this semester. The combination of textures and threads leaves an intricate and interesting outcome overall, particularly where sections of texture have been built up - with acrylic paint for instance shown to the left. The heavily built up paint on the tracing paper is contrasted against the empty thread holes which show other commuters journeys alongside my individual route.

My sketchbook has been a really useful tool throughout my time at University. It allows me to collate samples and ideas together as well as make notes alongside the outcomes. I can sketch out layout ideas or even test out paints and inks just like the images shown to the left. Testing out materials at an early stage gave me an opportunity to pick which techniques I liked using the most as well as seeing how I could push the boundaries with them. As you can see here, I tested out a variety of techniques using various colours, printed them on to different materials and introduced textures such as bubblewrap to see how this could switch up my ideas. At this stage, I also began to think how type could be introduced - as a title possibly. I drew a selection of letterforms and used the sewing machine to stitch into them. I’m not sure that they were exactly successful but it has now made me reconsider how the title will be achieved.

Beginning to consider the layout for the pages which will be used as part of my project. These samples won’t be used in my final outcome but at this stage it is important to consider how the pages will look in a sequence. I want to create a publication which will be opened out somehow - either concertina or open out into a large scale outcome.

After considering the content for my publication, I decided that it all felt a little too forced. There didn’t seem any point in including text that had no meaning or wasn’t necessarily related, so Instead I introduced photographs of the sky. The point behind this was that the photographs then become the narrative - feeling much more suitable overall. As a tester, I took photographs of the sky from both my car window and out of the window at home. I didn’t want the images to be too overpowering, so I tried to make them more subtle by experimenting with them - using paints, transferring them and printing them onto various surfaces. Some of the outcomes are a little too much in places and become completely distorted. I particularly like the first outcome shown with the yellow overlay which still allows the photograph to be seen subtly. This is an effect that I would like to use as part of my final outcome.

A selection of some of the sky photographs that I took for this project. I particularly like the bird that appears in some of the outcomes. This would be a good starting point for some of the stitches in my publication - showing my individual route or maybe even other commuters routes.

As I continued to create outcomes for this project, I noticed that at the back of the map that I was using, both Essington and Derby appear on the same page. As this is the main route that I have used for this project, I thought that it would interesting to link these together with different stitching marks and textures to show the route. This could be an introduction page to my publication - giving a basic insight/overview into what the outcome is about and the route that I take. The page is quite self-explanatory so I am hoping that it can be easily understood by others.

Experimenting with bubblewrap as a texture to see how this could work - alongside using bright, bold, pastel colours. I originally wanted to just use the colours which are used on a map so mainly red, blue, green, yellow and white but after experimenting with these colours, it might be interesting to incorporate a range of colours to break the publication up in places - bursts of colour which could represent a specific part of my journey.

Layering together shades, tones and colours to show a variation in journeys - possibly between my individual route and other commuters. These were also printed onto thicker paper stocks which might help the overall publication become a little more sturdier. I think that both colours work nicely alongside each other, and could help to break away from just conventional white pages. I want the publication to grab the readers attention - so by introducing bright colours this is a perfect way to achieve this.

As a secondary outcome, I also decided to design two hand made posters which accompany the publication. In one of my Concept Panels, it was suggested that I aim my outcomes at an exhibition which could be based around commuting and travelling. The posters follow in a similar style to the publication but include details of a fictional exhibition based at the Derby Museum and Art Gallery in November 2014. Event invites, leaflets and wayfinding signage could also be created using hand made techniques.

The poster designs in situation - This shows how they could be advertised to the general public. The left hand design was created initially, followed by the right hand image. Looking at them both side by side, it is clear that the left hand image is too busy, and the text isn’t very clear. The type can be read much clearer on the second image as the background is simpler.
