Cork is the bark of the Cork Oak tree (Quercus suber L). Chemical composition of cork • suberin (45%) - main component of the cell walls, responsible for the elasticity of the cork; • lignin (27%) - insulating compound; • polysaccharides (12%) - components of the cell walls that help define the texture of the cork; • tannins (6%) - polyphenolic compounds responsible for the colour; • seroids (5%) - hydrophobic compounds that guarantee the impermeability of the cork.
r
• Lightness: 0.16 grams per cubic centimetre, [nd ca float. • Flexibility/compressibility • Impermeability: Thanks to suberin and ceroids, it is practically impermeable to liquids and gases. • Decay resistant •Cork is highly resistant to moisture, and therefore to subsequent oxidation and decay. • Insulation: Good thermal, acoustic and vibration insulator. • In construction, it has clear advantages in regard to the quality of buildings, may be used in the waterproofing of infrastructures, foundations and underlays, in acoustic and thermal insulation and the final coverings for floors, walls, ceilings, facades and roofs. • Biodegradable, recyclable and renewable
Cork has developed into a key material in many industries including construction, technology and fashion. With its multiple formats- natural, composition, granulated and rubber/cork- cork's attributes cannot be found in any other single resource. Cork has been chosen by aeronautical engineers, scientists, architects, and fashion designers for use in sporting goods and leisure products. • Building and Architecture: Act as a thermal barrier, a sound insulator and a vibration dampener. Noncorrosive, is fire resistant and can bear heavy loads. It is widely used as insulation in roofs, walls, floors and ceilings. • Interior Design: Cork, as a natural product, warms and enriches any interior. It can be used as flooring, as a decorative feature wall or as a decorative ceiling. • Leisure Activities: Cork, as a natural product, warms and enriches any interior. It can be used as flooring, as a decorative feature wall or as a decorative ceiling. • Fashion: involved in the production of handbags, wallets, and travel cases. • Technology: used for automobile, electric, aeronautic and structural industries
The cork is a very elastic, soft, and light material, it is easy to cut and handle. In the experience I had doing this key holder, I realized that the thinner it is cut, the easier it is to fold and handle, when trying to hang the key In the wire and since the material was so light, I had to find a way to balance the weight, so I decided to create a composition of two flowers, one taller than another and at the base create two openings so the person can be able to place two other keys. Having this composition, with or without keys, it becomes a perfect decorative object to place in a strategic place to never forget your keys without leaving them lying on the table.
