Living History: The Titanic

Saturday, February 3rd • 11am and 2pm Location: Auditorium REGISTRATION REQUIRED Embark on a fascinating journey, as we open the door to the past in an interactive way. Participants will unlock the Titanic’s past and experience a sampling of tastes, sounds, and history of the RMS Titanic during this living history event. We’ll pay tribute to the passengers and crew and learn more about its maiden voyage. Please note that participants may or may not get to sit with all of those in their party. Seating is randomly selected based upon individual boarding passes, which will be received upon entry. The boarding pass will include social class and seating (1st, 2nd or 3rd class). This is a free event co-sponsored by Friends of the LCPL. Friends will have a donation box located in the lobby with proceeds benefitting library outreach.

Heart-Shaped Oreo Truffles

Bookmarked Book Club

Your friends and family will love these delicious treats and you’ll love how easy they are to make. Sheila Parrett will demonstrate how to create these no-bake truffles and share tips and tricks so your treats will have a perfect presentation.

This month’s pick explores a bittersweet romance in reverse. After a relationship ends, the novel unravels the couple’s history, moving backward from the tragic breakup to their magical first kiss.

Tuesday, February 13th • 1-2:30pm Location: Auditorium NO REGISTRATION Lucille Ball made history as the first female head of a production company and as America’s favorite red-headed slapstick comedienne. Laugh and reminisce with us as we watch I Love Lucy, and once again experience Lucy’s hairbrained schemes and antics that have captivated generations of audiences.

Trivial Pursuits in Austen’s Persuasion Tuesday, February 20th • 1-2pm Location: Auditorium REGISTRATION REQUIRED

Join us for an insightful program delving into Jane Austen’s timeless classic, Persuasion. Engage in discussions covering themes of love, social class, and the repercussions of external influence, exploring characters, plot twists, and subtle satire. Share perspectives, favorite quotes, and reflections on it’s enduring relevance in modern relationships, followed by a lively trivia session.

Storyteller Anne Shelby

Thursday, February 15th • 5:30-6:30pm Location: Auditorium NO REGISTRATION Anne Shelby is a skilled storyteller known for bringing traditional Appalachian folk tales to life in a contemporary context. Drawing on her roots in Southeastern Kentucky, Shelby’s narratives are steeped in the region’s language, history, and humor. As a recognized Kentucky Arts Council Master Storyteller, she captivates audiences across various settings, including schools, libraries, conferences, and festivals. Some of her notable works for both children and adults include titles such as The Man Who Lived in a Hollow Tree, inspired by a family legend, and The Adventures of Molly Whuppie and Other Appalachian Folktales, which earned her an American Folklore Society Aesop Accolade. Shelby resides on her family’s homestead in Clay County.

Friday, February 16th • 1-2pm Location: Community Room REGISTRATION REQUIRED In preparation of Random Acts of Kindness Day, we’ll be making a little heart using fabric scraps as a way to spread joy. These hearts are made to be placed in public places for a stranger to find. We encourage sewists of all abilities to join us, as we use every last piece of fabric to make something meaningful that will brighten someone’s day.

Matinee Movie: Harriet

Wednesday, February 21st • 1-3pm Location: Auditorium NO REGISTRATION Based on the thrilling and inspirational life of an iconic American freedom fighter, the movie tells the extraordinary tale of Harriet Tubman’s escape from slavery and transformation into one of America’s greatest heroes. Her courage, ingenuity, and tenacity freed hundreds of slaves and changed the course of history. This movie is rated PG-13.

True Crime: Rodney Alcala

Tuesday, February 27th • 6-7pm Location: Auditorium REGISTRATION REQUIRED Rodney Alcala was an American serial killer whose good looks and high IQ helped him lure victims. His 1978 appearance on the television show The Dating Game resulted in his nickname of “The Dating Game Killer.” While he has been conclusively linked to eight murders, Alcala’s true number of victims remains unknown and could be much higher.

Explore the world of Leonardo – no, not the Ninja Turtle, but the amazing artist and inventor, Leonardo da Vinci, the genius he was named after! Imagine painting your own Mona Lisa and inventing cool stuff just like him. But here’s the real kicker – did you know da Vinci once dreamed up an early parachute? Buckle up for a blast as we explore his masterpieces and then dive into some hands-on fun, creating our very own parachutes with all sorts of cool supplies. Let’s turn our playtime into a masterpiece just like Leonardo did!
