Costs of High SCC • Penalty for high cells/tbc • Cost of antibiotics • Cost of the loss of milk for the treatment period • Loss of yield from cow for whole lactation • Cost of farmer’s time to manage treatments, recording, collecting the treated milk and dumping it • Cost of antibiotic penalty • Cost of truck of milk if antibiotic present • Stress

Cell Count Penalty (Source Glanbia) 400,000 - 500,000 0.8 cent per litre 501,000 - 600,000 1.7 cent per litre >601,000 2.0 cent per litre For example a supplier with 350,000 litres With an average cell count of 420,000 for all year around =€2800 Realistically cell count goes up in the Autumn. September 35000 litres @0.8c/l=€280 October 21770 litres @0.8c/l=€174 November 16450 litres @ 0.8c/l =€132 Total €586
Cost of treatment Typical Mastitis tube cost €3.25 per tube One Mastitis case is 3 tubes x €3.25 =€10 33% is the National Average for clinical cases Example 77cow herd 33% = 26 cases x€10 = €260 3 day treatment plus 3 days withholding=6 days @ 22 litres /day =3432 litres Milk price of 30c/l =€1047 Prescription cost €20 Total cost €1327

SCC of 159 Was high SCC of 5,178,000 two months ago now back to normal after treatment
What can it do? • Identify Mastitis pathogens on Bulk or individual cow sample • Help in identifying source of mastitis or high SCC • Allow for identification of appropriate treatment What is the test? • PCR test for bacterial DNA • Highly accurate • No after-sample contamination • Not reliant on bacterial culture
Which Pathogens? Large-scale prevalence studies indicate that >95 % of all clinical and subclinical mastitis cases are caused by the species detected by the PCR test.

Staphylococcus aureus Coagulase Negative Staphylococci (CNS), all major mastitis species Staphylococcal beta-lactamase (penicillin resistance) gene Streptococcus agalactiae Streptococcus dysgalactiae Streptococcus uberis Escherichia coli Corynebacterium bovis Arcanobacterium pyogenes Enterococcus faecalis and/or faecium Klebsiella oxytoca and/or pneumoniae Serratia marcescens

Penicillin resistance If a positive Staph result is detected (this applies to both Staph aureus and Staph sp. results) the susceptibility of the pathogen to penicillin is also measured. This will be reported as follows: Result

High
Interpretation Susceptible to penicillin; suitable for use in treatment Resistant to penicillin; do not use in treatment Resistant to penicillin; do not use in treatment Resistant to penicillin; do not use in treatment
A set of guidance notes will be sent with each report and producers are advised to consult with their vets in regard to result interpretation & mastitis control
Results of Mastitis ID Test High Livel of Staphylococcus aureus also some Penicillin Resistance Our Guidance notes then tell us: Staphylococcus aureus - A contagious form of mastitis that spreads from cow to cow at milking time. Bacteria are shed from infected quarters in low numbers. These organisms multiply on damaged and injured teats. Staphylococcus aureus is frequently resistant to treatment .......... Notes will vary by Mastitis type
Steps in Mastitis/SCC control program
1. Is herd SCC >200,000? Are there clinical mastitis cases? 2. Identify high SCC cows and cows with clinical mastitis cases 3. Use mastitis ID test on problem cows to identify what bacteria is causing mastitis/SCC 4. Use guidance note on bacteria to understand effect, transmission and management factors influencing source of mastitis 5. Decide on course of action Actions will depend on type of mastitis causing problem. Action plan should be discussed in conjunction with vet, farm advisor, milking parlour technician etc and may include a combination of treatments and management changes. 6.
