notes from Artlantis rendering

ArtLantis works by differentiating objects by colour, rather than layer like Sketchup, to start the process change the colours and textures of objects using the paint bucket tool.

I have now changed the colour and/or texture of the objects to test the effects of the rendering.

In order to get a full view of the object I have selected a number of viewpoints and made them into scenes in an animation.

Using the shadow tool you can alter the time of year and day to give an idea of the light being cast on the model and alter the look of the shadows.

Flat views are very useful as you can use them for plans and elevations. To get a flat view go to ‘View’, ‘Toolbars’ and ‘Views’ you will then get the house icons appear at the top of your screen that you can use to change between flat views. You may need to take out the perspective view using the zoom button by entering 1 into the value box.

When opening ArtLantis the first thing you must do I select a file. This will usually be a Sketchup file.

By clicking on the list button along the top of the screen all of your scenes from your Sketchup model will appear. Then go through your scenes and use the padlock button to lock the view.

The 2D view is useful as it gives a visual representation of your camera location and field of view.

To add textures and colour to your model for rendering go to the paintbucket and select shaders in the bottom window. Then go through the possible materials and click and drag what you want to where you want it.

If you have already applied a texture on Sketchup then applying a new texture in ArtLantis wont work, to remove the old texture click on the object to select it and then right click to delete the original texture.

With all shaders you can alter the shininess, reflection, bump, transparency, size and colour.

The outcome after adding textures is a model that is a lot more believable as a real object, model or location.

When you click the render model you need to decide where you want the render to be exported to. You can then go to options to change the resolution, rendering size and other choices. Anti-aliasing should be on high. Save these changes as your default and apply them to all views then click render now.

This is the final render, though very similar to the preview the edges are softer and more believable.
