Establishing Professional Practice – Week 3

Creating a blog using Wordpress:

First open wordpress.com and click on the ‘Get Started’ button.

Set up your account with your email address and then choose a username and blog address that is not already taken. Carry on through this process to choose topics to follow such as Art and Travel. You also have the option to find facebook friends who are using wordpress.

Go on to choose a theme for your blog. The theme involves the layout and colour scheme of your blog. The one we have chosen to use is twenty ten.

Once you have created your blog and activated it through your email address you can go into dashboard to make changes. From dashboard you can add new posts, edit/delete old posts, change your theme, add photos, add new pages and lots more. All of this can be done from the tabs on the taskbar on the left hand side.

Click on the ‘Posts’ tab to add new or edit old posts.

To see how posts will appear on your page without writing anything, you can use a lorem ipsum generator such as hairy lipsum to generate text for you. The text is nonsensical but allows you to view and change the layout of text on your blog.

Adding new pages:

You can add new pages to your blog through dashboard. Go to the ‘Pages’ tab and then click on ‘Add new’. Name your page and then publish it.

Choose the parent page here

Once you have added one page to your blog you can use it as a parent page, this means that when you add new pages you can choose for them to appear as pages inside the parent page. Adding a link to a page:

Add media button

Open the page in dashboard and then click on the ‘Add media’ button.

Choose an image to upload to make into your link. This link will open my issuu page so the image I have chosen is my issuu front cover.

Get embed code button

To get the issuu link I signed into my issuu account and opened my magazine. I then clicked on the button above to get the embed code to add to my blog page.

I then copied the issuu link above‌

‌ and then pasted it into the add link box on wordpress dashboard.
