Establishing professional practice week 8 Printing your AutoCAD drawing: Model space and page set-up manager. Model space is window in which you draw your objects. You can swap from model space to paper space to give you a print preview. To do this you need to look at the layout. To get to the layout view you can click on the tabs at the bottom of the screen.

This is the layout view of my drawing, I got to it by clicking on this ‘Layout1’ tab.

To make a new layer simply right click on an existing tab to open the menu, then click on ‘New layout’

You can also rename your tabs to make different layouts easier to identify.

To modify a layer you need to open the ’Page setup manager’ to di this again just right click on a tab to open the menu and then click on the selection.

This is the window that the ‘Page setup manager’ will present you with. It lets you see the name of the printer and the size of your print, from here you need to click on ‘Modify.’

This is the modify menu. From here you can choose your printer, your paper size, and your scale. Choose an ISO (A) size paper and ensure that your scale is always in the ratio 1:1 not in inches. Your ‘Plot area’ should be on ‘Layout’.

Display – Current display in model space. Extents – The whole drawing in the model space. Layout – Your current layout view. Window – Select a section of the drawing to print.

This is what the layout looks like after the adjustments in ‘Page setup manager’.

If you then double click in the view window you can zoom in and out of your drawing to show specififc points of your drawing.

By using the copy tool you can then make more windows, resize them and zoom in or out to different points and display them all on the same page.

If you want your view ports to show the model to specific scales then double click on the view port you wish to change and then click on the view port scale button at the bottom of the screen.

Printing as PDF: All CAD work will be printed as PDF files. To do this simply change the printer to Adobe PDF in the ‘Page setup manager’ menu. You will also need to change the drawing to monochrome to print it in black and white, this looks more professional and is how printed CAD work should be presented.

This is a print preview of the monochrome PDF.

Tip: If you are stuck in the model window on the paper space then click on the model button shown below to change back to the paper space, allowing you to zoom out again.
