‘i never know what the next step will take me’

Going to the event at the Central in Nottingham I decided this would be the ideal place to take photos for my ‘Events’ part of my photo story. This article explores what I found at the event to be inspiring, the people I photographed, what I produced and interviews from people who attended and people who played the gig. The gig got a very good turn out of people, which was really good when it came to taking my photographs. I wanted to get a sense of the atmosphere of the venue and what was going on during the bands playing on stage and what was going on off stage so I could get both points of view. I decided to have a change on lens to get more effects and decided to shoot the bands and the people attending with a ‘fish eye’ lens so the event would have different images in many senses to the other two shoots, people and places. As my theme is based around lifestyle and inspiration I decided to try and adapt that through my images and choice of event. The event is very

true to my own lifestyle, which was the ideal objective for the overall event theme. I wanted to get a sense of what inspired the people who played the event and interviewed a member of one of the bands to see what he though. When asking what inspired him to perform the type of music he does and his response was:

‘It’s hard to train your voice to scream/sing in the way I do, takes a lot of practice. I have always had a love for metal music and as I never bothered to learn guitar being a front man was the only way I was going to be able to follow the people and bands I idolize. I have always enjoyed seeing bands like mine live and wondered what it would be like to be up there, and now I know. It’s amazing!’ I know that the type of music that I listen to is exactly that of the music that the member of the band ‘designed to fail’ is inspired by. The type of lifestyle is very influenced by that of metal music and death-core metal music with such bands as ‘bleed from within’ and ‘suicide silence’ among other styles of music which are combined together to make something new. The atmosphere at gigs like this is wild and this event

was no different, the crowd sings and ‘dances’ if you want to call it dancing, to the bands and mosh pits break out which makes for a brilliant atmosphere and amazing pictures. I really enjoyed the fact that most of the bands bar two where local bands from Nottingham and neighbouring city Derby. I asked the same member of a local band in Nottingham what he though to this and doing what he loved locally he said: ‘Its amazing! I always get such a buzz from being on stage especially when there is a big crowd. I feed off the people who are jumping around and singing along to the songs especially because we are not a big band and only local. It’s nice to have support’ I captured the bands through my images but I also wanted to show the crowd and people attending and their reactions and how they enjoyed the gig. I decided to interview a fellow photographer who was also taking images from the gig what she thought about the overall atmosphere: ‘there was such a good turn out today the place was so alive and so packed out. I think it helped give the bands a lot more drive to give their best performance. The crowd was so alive. ‘ overall I think that the gig and the shoot were a real success
