Our current world of suburbs and electronics may be hurting our children. Kids who play in natural environments are less likely to be obese, have lower chances of developing Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and depression, are better able to cope with stress and have a greater respect for the environment. Partnerships4Trails directly addresses this modern problem by taking children to natural settings where they are able to exercise, learn about the environment and come to respect it. The program also pays the gift forward by creating or restoring trails and surrounding habitat that will allow others to experience nature. Over the past two years, Partnerships4Trails has helped more than 100 kids connect with nature while learning important life skills. The program currently operates at three Southern California locations. Here are the stories of how Partnerships4Trails has made a difference in the lives of the students we serve and the communities they live in:

We are also in need of in-kind donations of goods and services, especially safety gear such as boots, gloves and compasses for children who cannot afford to purchase these items on their own.

“Working Together to Build & Preserve our Trails”

A Trails4All “Hands-On” Educational Program

Partnerships4Trails Inspires a School

News spread of the plans inspiring the whole school to pitch in. Soon, Magnolia High School students will only have to go to the edge of campus to experience nature.

Creating a More Peaceful Community Cambodian Family is a non-profit after school program in an area of Santa Ana with the highest concentration of gangs in the County. The organization works to help save children living here from a life of crime by showing kids that they have other options. Partnerships4Trails partnered with the Cambodian Family to help them fulfill their mission. The students have been re-creating a trail along Santiago Creek and re-planting native habitat. Proving a positive influence, at a clean up in the area a local gang gave their nod of approval and agreed to leave while the kids were working, creating a safer environment for everyone.

Bringing Families Together The Partnerships4Trails class at Letha Raney Intermediate School is not short on enthusiasm for the work they are doing creating a trail to the top of Tin Mine Canyon in the Cleveland National Forest. At the first meeting of the group the students sprang into action, organizing themselves into groups and delegating tasks before the facilitators could. The enthusiasm for their work has spread to their parents as well, inspiring them to attend trail work day with their children. Partnerships4Trails has given these families the opportunity to learn about trails, natural spaces and each other as they work side by side.

Partnerships4Trails is an after-school program run by the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization Trails4All in partnership with other environmental non-profit organizations, local land managers and after school programs . We take kids into the outdoors where we teach them leadership skills and about native habitats and the environment while empowering students by letting them plan and implement their own project.

Teaching Lessons for Life

Anaheim’s Magnolia High School is miles away from natural open space and surrounded by concrete and asphalt. The Partnerships4Trails group at Magnolia High School decided that since it was so difficult to get to nature, they would bring nature to the school by creating a two-acre native garden and an interpretive trail on campus.
