The Salina Art Center is an artist retreat that provides room to live, work and display art. This project combines private artist studios and living with public galleries, libraries, and a black-box theater. Studio spaces open up to central courtyard space, encouraging not only for the artists to collaborate, but for visitors to watch working artists.

one-artist gallery: orozco 3rd-year: michael mcglynn new york city, new york Located in chelsea, this new york gallery is specifically designed for Gabriel Orozco, a sculpture and photographer. Orozco captures the beauty found in mundane objects, manipulating his medium to create dynamic art. Although his sculptures range from a whale skeleton, citreon, shoebox and yogurt lids, one common theme connects every piece of art: movement. In the design for the gallery, I decided to translate many of Orozco’s art themes into architectural principals, focusing on the idea of movement, and how this could shape the visitor experience.

entry + sequence: visitors can experience the museum by entering from ground level or from the highline. each entry creates a different sequence of events in viewing the artwork.

gallery + large sculpture display

gallery + auditorium overlook

visual movement: encouraging visitors to move upward, the double-height space provides views of artwork, creating suspension for what’s to come next.

physical movement: movable partitions in the galleries and auditorium space create a dynamic environment, allowing the gallery to house a variety of different sculptures.

The Kansas City Ecological Institute provides a place for the neighborhood to learn and grow. Serving several different occasions, the institute contains a cafe, library, conference room, and auditorium for public use, and classrooms, a computer room, outdoor learning space for students. Multiple ways in which to learn about sustainalbe principals are found throughout the design, acting as “teachable” moments for the community. With a quick inception, the ecological institute became a project in exploring detailing. From board-form concrete and green roofs to indoor - outdoor relationships, the details are intended to amplify the project’s overall design concepts.

[adapt] BROADMOOR USGBC Design Competion New Orleans For htree weeks in the summer of 2010, 7 third-year architecture students at Kansas State University undertook the USGBC Natural Talent Design Competition. We were tasked with designing an 800 square foot house for elderly residents in the Broadmoor neighborhood of New Orleans, Louisiana. In addition, the house needed to meet the requirements for LEED for Homes, Platinum certification, stay within a $100,000 construction budget, and use universal design principals throughout.

exchange center 5th year thesis: bob condia hunters point, new york thesis: To create an exchange center for Hunters Point, which establishes a unified community, while reflecting its history in the modern setting of Manhattanhenge.

manhattanhenge: Manhattanhenge attracts New Yorkers to the streets twice a year to watch the setting sun pierce through the east-west streets in Manhattan. The community of Hunters Point has a unique vantage point of this event, as the sun passes through the entire Island of Manhattan. Positioning communal space with views of Manhattanhenge will serve as a catalyst for community involvement.

historical reference: Located on the peninsula bounded by Newton Creek and the East River, Hunters Point became a highly industrialized area in the 19th century. However, as technology shifted, the site has remained abandoned for decades. With the proposed housing development, the exchange center has the opportunity to bridge the rich industrial history and new urban fabric.

programmatic response: Only a five minute stop from grand central station on the subway, Hunters Point has all the convenience of living in the city for half the price, a perfect home for many local artists. The “modern library reflects the community in which it serves. Creating additional gallery space and classrooms for local artists to teach and display work would encourage the connnection between the existing and future residents.

mid-critique plan

Shifting from a central stair dividing the two functions to a pair of stairs bringing the art and library functions together. The central stair now acts a place, which unites the components, transitioning users from individuals to a collective unit.
