Moodboard

For ideas in my photography and posters section I invision a style like this initially. Rough textured type or something moe illustrated with more structure. Images are dark and not colourful to convey a mood that is sinister and unnerving. These techniques will be explored in general for the project to see if an outcome communicates the message in a shocking, more melecholy way.

Shizuka Yokomizo

http://www.tate.org.uk/whats-on/tate-modern/exhibition/exposed/exposed-voyeurism-surveillance-and-camera-exhibition-guide-4

This project of Yokomizo explores the relationship between herself and others as strangers. The models in this task have been approached via a letter of a time and date to appear at the window to be photographed, remaining strangers, or shutting their curtains if they didn’t want to participate. These people are not victims of Surveillance art but in a collaboration with the artist. This inspires my ideas as I want the model to appear a stranger even when they won’t be. The style of the figure in their private space is what I am interested in for my own project.

I want to show the dangers of spreading too much personal information on social media in a metaphor of being in someone’s personal space. The camera lense imitating the screen of a computer and the personal room being the page of social media people post on.

Willem Popelier

http://www.willempopelier.nl/showroomgirls.html

Popelier’s project involves discovering 91 images and 2 videos of two girls, after research he also found many they took in the soace on an hour had been deleted. The artist was curious in the fact these girls deleted some but left many for strangers to see when in the showroom. Willem Popelier also found the images on social network sites as well as personal information such as a home address. These images including space for the deleted pictures were placed in an exhibition with the tweets of one girl being printed in mass in front of the collection (only displaying date and time).

I feel this project shows the where images of the self and personal info could end up and who’s hands they may end up. To respond to this project I am going to create the small task of trying to spread a photo on all social media platforms to see how far it ends up.

Jessamyn Lovell “I just wanted her to know that she impacted a real person,

http://www.jessamynlovell.com/portfolio/Dear_Erin_Hart/content/DEH_17.html

This project of Lovell’s blends a personal attack with a photography project when a woman stole Lovell’s identity and commited several crimes in her name. After research and calling a private investigator as well as collecting documents, the photographer began following her after jail. She took several discreete photos of her and named the project “Dear Erin Hart”. This inspired my own ideas as I want to capture the figure in a vunerable state, whether this is via distance shots or a studio session where the models are looking into the camera aware that they are being watched.

David Carson

http://www.davidcarsondesign.com/t/work/

David Carson’s work involves techniques such as hand-drawn type, photography and creating layers in a random yet structured format. I’d like to use Carson’s style and appearance in my own work as I have a particular interest in type created in a studio. I’m also fond of the way the artist lays out his work in a way thats disorganised yet controlled.

In my own work whether I decide to make a poster or something more I shall use this distressed hand type style and layer my pieces in a collage way.

Jamie Reid

http://www.jamiereid.org/

Reid’s work explores hand-drawn type and creating type through cutting out letters from magazines and newspaper. His punk collage style is a similar interest of my own therefore I feel this theme could work in my own designs.

Nina Gregier

http://ninagregier.com

Nina Gregier explores various design such as illustration and typography which I have researched and liked the most. I chose these two pieces as I feel I could create a similar style. After looking at this I want to create a textured text by hand and thread. Also I want to create illustrators like these involving photography, such as scribbling and mark-making in the photo to add expression to the piece.

Stephan Sagmeister

http://design.designmuseum.org/design/stefan-sagmeister

This artist is well known for this piece of work and I feel this style could work in my ideas, once taking images of my model I could then apply text of the subjects tweets and posts online onto the face. This then would show the info you put on the internet and what people read is part of you. This idea could change but the style is certainly something I want to explore. I could also apply the text straight onto the model by ink onto the body or projecting the text onto the body, this would add a personal, different touch to my work.

Nick Gentry

http://www.nickgentry.com

Gentry’s work inspired me due to the texture and use of materials in his work. When I veiwed this work I instantly had ideas of printing out social media posts and collaging them onto a photo or drawing of the subject they came from.

I particularly like the bottom left image of the woman and the film from the camera. The hole punched sections add extra texture but also making the face less emotive and more flat compared to the realness of the other images.

This would show a similar idea as Sagmeisters work of the relationship between the self and their social media self. How much of yourself should you put out into social media?

This could be an intresting aspect to consider in my own work when generating more ideas and ways to push it further.

Mimmo Rotella Kurt Schwitters

http://rogallery.com/_RG-Images/Rotella/Rotella-Omaggio_a_Marilyn-40.jpg

http://www.tate.org.uk/art/artists/kurt-schwitters-1912

I placed these two artists together because I feel they are similar in some ways, using collage as a form of communication. Rotella’s work involves de-constructing images and paper to create a layered effect where as Schwitters applies layers on top of the next. I will create an outcome for each artist as the creation will be two different styles involving a collage technique.

In the Rotella style I will use a face or figure of the model and de-construct the layers to reveal a subject within peeling of paper. I feel the idea of layers to the subject can ask the question how deep should you delve when posting thoughts, feeling and facts about yourself online. In terms of Schwitters work I could play with face and posts to create a blend or mis-match of information and image like it is in the internet.

General Idea Concept

For this project I have decided my general guideline to explore is between two options, exploring the self and the internet self, how a person’s identity can be changed or lost when online as the page of a website can’t communicate true emotion and expression. Another concept idea is exploring whether we are

being stalked or are we just paranoid. This idea was originallly showing the danger of stalking until I looked to see if this was an issue that needed addressing, as the media can create paranoia over certain issues. I have decided this is what I will explore instead of dangers, ask the question are we being stalked or are we paranoid?

A Start to Experimentation

To creating a starting point and cure the designer’s form of writers block I took several photos of a few models giving them keywords of “paranoia, scared and anxious”. I had inspiration of poses from pinterest ready to be replicated in their own way. I also kept in mind the expression on the face of the models in Shizuka Yokomizo’s work to respond to this artist in a way.

Best Picks Light Edits

&

Choosing a couple of favourite shots that have been edited to black & white to create a sullen mood.

These images have been edited slighty by making the saturation low to grayscale and then turning up the contrast for a bold appearence. The effect of this black & white and defined image highlights the dark atmosphere, and the contrast highlights features such as the eyes that look scared or the straight smile that looks emotionless.

I blurred a couple of images like one of my inspiration images as if and when adding type, the words would be the focus literally as well as metaphorically.

Experimental Images

These three images were overlaid on Photoshop to create a texture and more distorted appearance, this communicates the idea of paranoia due to the several emotions that occur with this feeling. As this was a small experiment I chose to keep with the grayscale colour scheme as I could reverse or add texture when further developing.

I feel this technique works well for the emotion and mood I am trying to get across to the audience.

More of my original photos have been manipulated via Photoshop to create similar effects and new overlays. I created texture to the pieces on the right page to portray a darker mood, the emotion is shown through the eye and the texture exaggerates this atmosphere.

The textured overlaid image is a scan of moving faces that created a melted look that blends well with the main images, each effect makes the image darker and more sinister.

This overlay is a textured experiment that involves my scans of movement and hands, as well as one of the original untouched photos. Once I played and discovered a style that looked appealing and communicated the idea, in this particular photo I was capturing the idea of unknown stalker that feels inches away even when they are behind a screen. The hands in the first image seem ghostly and the second appears stronger with a touch of assertiveness that is more sinister than in the white.

These photos were a beginning point to the style of images I wanted to achieve, therefore I played with settings and focused on the eye being a subject as the eyes can show the emotion I want to portray. The lighting is varied which creates a scary atmosphere as it feels as if someone is lurking close or the person the eye belongs to a stalker themselves

Scans and Backgrounds Creating unusual backgrounds involving hands and faces for an effect that would work with my images.

Scan Edits I also edited a few scans by layering them and seeing what effects could happen.

Studio Experiments

The stitched photo brings a slight creepy feel to the image, a word likely used when describing a stalker. It can also refer to the idea of the victim having to patch themselves up and feeling they’re “hanging on by a thread” due to the feeling of being paranoid. The image with the rip gives off the same vibe of how the issue may effect a person. How we constantly feel like we’re being watched, the model’s eyes portrays this.

The ripped images are experiments to play with the ripping technique. The faceless figure shows the idea of the stalker is unknown, that we are being watched by cameras and technology controlled by a group of people we don’t know.

Edited Studio

On the previous page I created type inspired by Nina Gregier, both create texture one visually and the other physically done with sewing the letters. I explored the technique again in a longer phrase to see if more letters changed the overall effect of this, I feel it came out well. Two other typefaces I attempted were a scratchy type that I think has potential and printed type that would be too small to apply to the image.

Two other typefaces I attempted were a scratchy type that I think has potential and printed type that would be too small to apply to the image. I created these experiments with innovative typography ideas in mind, the first using the negative space rather than filling the letters for a

different effect, when this is inverted the type created in black looks interesting and unusual. In the second piece I made the “crazy” random and different for each letter to emphasise this style. And in the letters from “stalked” have a map of a victim made by the stalker to show the idea through type. The third is more simplistic than the second with the same ideas in mind. I blacked the “crazy” to keep the simplicity avoiding too many lines, and “stalker” is in a stamp style similar to a fail stamp as this has negative connotations as does the word stalker.
