publisher's note Happy New Year!! While I can’t believe that time is flying by quite as fast as it is, the beginning of a new year is always a welcome fresh start. Though technically it’s just another day, January 1st seems to offer up a chance to leave the past year behind us and to embrace the year ahead and all that it has to offer. Of course it is a time that we tend to make all sorts of resolutions, hoping that if we stick with them they will ensure that this year is even better than the last. With that in mind we chose Estes Audiology Hearing Centers for this month’s cover feature. So often we focus on the obvious resolutions – lose ten pounds, stop smoking, etc. – but how about those of you who could benefit from improving your hearing? Think about how amazing 2015 could be if you were able to Hear Life Again! To learn more about Estes Audiology and the many advances in hearing aid technology turn to page 14. Also in this issue, Karl Eggerss of Eggerss Capital Management shares with us what the falling oil prices mean to you, we take a look at what performers Boerne Performing Arts is bringing to town during their 2015 season and so much more! I wish you all a very blessed 2015,

FALLING OIL PRICES GOOD FOR SOME… BAD FOR OTHERS!
S by Karl Eggerss
Since late June, oil prices fell over 50% from their peak of $110 per barrel, a true bear market. Is it the lack of demand pushing prices down, the rising U.S. dollar, or an increased supply? The answer is yes. It’s all three. It also didn’t help when OPEC (Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries) met on Thanksgiving Day and decided not to cut oil production after oil had already fallen $73. Later, OPEC reiterated that stance when oil was around $58. OPEC’s website states their mission is to “ensure the stabilization of oil markets”. But, they seem to be doing anything but that. Some believe international countries are trying to crush the U.S. shale industry. Others believe that while many OPEC countries are able to produce oil at a fraction of the cost of U.S. shale producers, if you consider the impact of lower prices on their overall economies, they may not have as strong of a hand as

what meets the eye. Regardless, there’s definitely a high stakes game of chicken going on in the oil markets. It’s no secret that U.S. oil production has boomed in recent years thanks to innovation and hydraulic fracturing (fracking). In fact, the U.S. is now producing as much oil per month as it did during the mid-1980s. Frankly, it’s been amazing that oil stayed above $100 for as long as it did. After all, oil, like other commodities is ultimately about supply and demand. Too much supply and less demand means falling prices. Furthermore, the value of the U.S. dollar has experienced its biggest 6 month rise in four years during the second half of 2014, as the U.S. economy has strengthened, while fears of recession and slowdown have plagued Europe, Japan, China and other countries. In other words, money globally has flowed to the path of least resistance,

leading to a spike in the U.S. dollar. Because oil is priced in U.S. dollars globally, a rise in the U.S. dollar makes it more expensive for foreign purchasers. This leads to lower global demand and contributes to falling oil prices. Some are cheering the drop in oil prices. Consumers are now seeing gasoline prices fall, which is great for travelers during the holiday season and families looking for a little extra cash in their pocket. Unfortunately, gasoline is only approximately 4% of most families’ budgets. Food costs and healthcare make up a larger portion. But, falling gas prices are certainly helping the consumer and consumers with extra change in their pockets also benefit retailers as those extra discretionary dollars are spent. Transportation companies are another clear beneficiary of lower oil prices as lower costs on fuel translate to bigger bottom line profits. Not surprisingly, stocks of airline, trucking and rail operators have seen strong gains in recent months. Some countries who are large importers of oil also benefit. India, for example, imports approximately 80% of their oil, and furthermore subsidizes fuels costs for their consumers, so the drop in oil is a meaningful benefit to their trade deficit and overall government finances. While falling oil prices are good for some, it’s bad for many others. According to Reuters, at least a dozen U.S. energy companies have cut spending plans for 2015 due to the drop in crude oil prices, which ultimately could mean layoffs. In addition to employers and employees affected by the price of oil, there are plenty of land owners living off of royalty income each month and several states that derive a large portion of their tax base from energy production. Lower production and energy prices means less investments in homes, cars, and other discretionary items, affecting our local economy. Lastly, investors in energy companies have seen their investments drop in price recently. And although some investors don’t have a direct investment in energy, their 401-K and mutual funds more than likely do. Falling oil prices is not good news for states that benefit from jobs, wealth and tax income that oil provides. Most notably, this includes Texas, Alaska, North Dakota, Oklahoma and New Mexico. Some reports have claimed that since 2009, 40% of all jobs created in the United States have been in Texas. In addition, there were more housing starts in the city of Houston in 2013 than the entire state of California. So, a weaker energy market could have major ramifications for the state of Texas and even our local economy. And, there is a tipping point where weakness

in the energy sector spills over to the broader U.S. and even global economy. With interest rates still near historic lows, a lot of leverage has been used to fund energy projects around the country. We know what can happen to an industry with too much leverage. Housing is the best example of too much leverage and severe consequences. Whenever there are disruptions in the price of any asset (in this case oil), there will be winners and losers. The strong companies take advantage of the weak ones. This time will be no different. For those investors that are opportunistic and perhaps patient, falling oil prices could mean a large long-term payday.BBM In 2010, Karl established Eggerss Capital Management, his own registered investment advisory firm dedicated to providing clients with superior financial counsel in the changing economy. Did You Make a Resolution to Exercise More?
Here’s How to Stay Motivated!
T
by Taylor Davis
The health benefits of exercise are hard to ignore. Regular exercise can help you to feel better, control weight, combat health conditions and disease, promote better sleep and more! With all the advantages that come with increased physical activity it’s no wonder that exercising more tops the list of New Year’s resolutions made by so many year after year. However, as important as we know exercise is, it is hard to stay motivated to keep up those resolutions. Here are a few tips to help you get more exercise! Make It a Competition: Competing with someone else is an easy way to make exercise more fun! Challenging your spouse or friend to a friendly competition can help keep you motivated and focused on your fitness goals. Maybe you see who can lose the most weight in a specified time period. Maybe you do smaller, more specific challenges while working out like seeing who can perform the most reps of a particular exercise. Increase the motivation by coming up with a special prize for the winner to get! Set Specific Goals: Having a goal that you are working towards is a great way to keep you motivated! For example, you might set out to run a half marathon or lose 15 pounds. The key is the set smaller goals along the way and to develop a plan on how to reach that end goal. You might get overwhelmed or frustrated if you try to do it all at once. Instead, first aim to run a mile or lose the first five pounds, once you
have reached those goals you can move on to the next step. Setting goals helps to create a sense of purpose, you have something you are aiming for. Bribe Yourself: Rewarding yourself for successfully exercising is a great way to help you look forward to it. Maybe you book a massage if you reach your fitness goals for the month or buy yourself something special that you’ve had your eye on. Get an Exercise Buddy: Accountability is key when it comes to developing a fitness routine. One of the best ways to stay motivated is to have an exercise buddy! If you have someone else who is counting on you to show up, you’ll be much more likely to get off the couch. Set a Good Example: Thinking of falling off the exercise wagon? Reconsider by thinking about the good example you are setting for your kids. Kids do what they see you doing, so by exercising regularly you are showing them the importance of developing this healthy habit. Develop a Habit: If you just try to work a little exercise into your busy schedule it will never get done. Instead, set aside a specific time each day to exercise. Soon, it will become a habit and you won’t even have to think about it. Last minute excuses will always pop up and try to derail your fitness plans, but if you make exercising at a specific time each day a priority you’ll be much more likely to achieve your goals. At Estes Audiology Hearing Centers they are truly focused on assisting their patients to reach a higher quality of life through better hearing. With clinics in Boerne, New Braunfels and Austin, their mission is to change patients’ lives by providing exceptional service and outstanding hearing healthcare. In 2005, Soriya Estes, AuD started her first office in New Braunfels with the philosophy of providing superior hearing healthcare services for all patients. Since then Kelli

House, M.A., joined as a partner in the practice and their vision of expanding hearing healthcare lead them to expand their Boerne clinic to a new facility. According to Dr. Estes, “We aim to serve the needs of each individual patient. Whether a hearing aid is the most appropriate solution or perhaps a different recommendation is a better option, and to respect the decisions that each person makes in regards to their hearing care.” Estes Audiology Hearing Centers are fullservice audiology clinics that provide assistance to both adult and pediatric patients. “We really encourage family involvement for both the patient’s support and education,” stated Dr. Estes. In fact, each initial appointment is a full hour in length to ensure that the patient and their family receive a complete diagnostic assessment, as well as a full counseling session regarding hearing loss and rehabilitative suggestions for communication. “We have found that the best results in the treatment of hearing loss come when everyone involved is participating,” Dr. Estes added. In addition to their outstanding quality of care, Estes Audiology offers their patients the latest in diagnostic and hearing aid technology. According to Dr. Estes, “Today’s hearing aids are so technologically advanced that our patients are always amazed at what they are capable of. Hearing aids are now digital and Bluetooth enabled, some of them are even engineered to work with your iPhone®, iPad®, and iPad Touch® so phone calls, music, videos and more can stream directly into the hearing ads with pristine sound quality. The hearing aids
of today are really very small microprocessors that have the ability to analyze, adapt and enhance your environment for better hearing.” She added, “All of this new technology is even allowing us to successfully treat patients that had not had success with hearing aids before.” Estes Audiology is one of the select offices in the United States to offer Lyric® Hearing to its patients. Lyric® is the first extended wear hearing device that is 100% invisible. It is comfortably placed in the ear canal by a Lyric® trained hearing professional and can be worn 24 hours a day, seven days a week, months at a time with no surgery or anesthesia required. Many patients like Lyric® because of the
ease of use. Because it remains in the ear canal for months at a time, you don’t need to worry about daily hassles like putting the device on or taking it off, or changing batteries. It can be used during your daily activities, such as exercising, showering, talking on the phone, and sleeping,” said Dr. Estes. For Estes Audiology, there is no onesize-fits all solution when it comes to hearing loss either. “We treat each patient individually and make our recommendations based upon their environments and lifestyles. We can have two patients with identical hearing loss, but different lifestyles and we would probably recommend different devices to each of them based upon which device we believe they will benefit the most from,” said Dr. Estes. In some cases, hearing aids are not the sole answer to communication difficulties. There are many other devices available to help in even the most difficult listening environments. These devices include television listening systems, special doorbells, vibrating alarm clocks, amplified telephones, mobile phone solutions and many others. Estes Audiology also specializes in custom hearing protection. Whether you are a musician, an avid hunter or work in a high-noise job, the entire team at Estes Audiology works with several custom earmold labs to offer products including musician filtered earplugs, in-ear monitor systems, custom ear buds, sleep plugs and custom electronic shooter plugs. All of the audiologists at Estes Audiology are educated at a Masters or Doctoral level. According to Dr. Estes, continued on page 16

“The talent and commitment of our employees through their impeccable service and expertise allows us to be able to really benefit our patients and offer them life changing products and services.” Lead Audiologist at Estes Audiology – Boerne is Liz Beschoner, AuD, CCC-A. Dr. Beschoner joined Estes in 2014 and has served many patients with varied needs in private practices around the San Antonio and Boerne area. As a local Audiologist, she is committed to helping those with hearing loss by bringing them excellent care through rehabilitation to improve their quality of life. Dr. Beschoner resides in Boerne with her husband and newborn baby girl. Estes Audiology works with a variety of insurances and is continuing to expand their network to accommodate their patients needs any way that they can. “With a fulltime insurance coordinator on staff we are happy to check your hearing insurance benefit and provide an explanation of the coverage for you,” said Dr. Estes. “More and more insurances are beginning to cover and offer hearing benefits.” With all of the advances in hearing aid technology it would be a shame to let another year slip by without doing anything to better your hearing quality. Imagine what you will be missing out on if you do. Whether you are someone who just wants to see how your ears are doing, someone who knows you or a loved one might need a little hearing help, a music lover who wants the best in hearing protection, a hunter who wants a heightened advantage with their ear protection or a musician looking for the latest in custom monitors, Estes Audiology will help you gain back better hearing in the New Year! ESPERANZA BREAKS GROUND City officials and members of The Lookout Group project team for the Esperanza community broke ground on the first phase of construction for this new master planned community on Highway 46 east of Boerne. In 2008 the city of Boerne entered into a development agreement for this community. Mayor Mike Schultz remarked that The Lookout Group has been great to work with, noting that
after taking over for the original developer, Lookout has met all of its obligations under the terms of the development agreement including the financial obligations to pay $2.3m toward Herff Road construction costs and to continue making payments for water reservation costs for the future residents of Esperanza. At completion, the 1,243-acre Esperanza will include 2,480 homes, a Boerne ISD elementary school and a middle school, a fire station, 36 acres of land for retail and office buildings, and over 340 acres of parks, open space, trails and upscale amenities. So it’s a new year and like most Americans the two most popular resolutions are losing weight and saving money. But guess what; organizing is high on our lists! Time management and paper clutter seem to be in the Top 10 for most people whether you work in an office or run a household. The reality is organizing is a work in progress. Organizing systems will always be tweaked or altered due to our changing schedules, or a life change such as a new job, a new baby or a move. The number one rule in organizing in my opinion is “Everything has a home.” Find a place for your belongings where they make sense for you, not where everyone else may think makes sense. There are many tools to help you get organized in the digital world. Yes, they can be time consuming to set up and there are so many category options to choose from. Experiment and see what works for you. It’s not unusual to use both digital tools and other forms, like paper for certain categories. Here are four of the most common areas where people need help in staying organized in everyday life or for their jobs. To-Do-List: A few good digital options are; Todoist – works on any device; Any.do – works on Google Chrome, Android & iOS and Wunderlist - Windows, iPhone, iPad and Kindle. All apps are free and have upgrades for a minimal charge. Calendar: This category has so many forms to stay organized and on time, wall calendars, book form and online like Google Calendar which can be shared with family or co-workers. Phone calendars sync to all devices and can also be
shared by others. Cloud Storage: Online storage, what a concept! Tools like Dropbox, Picasa and Google Drive, all allow you to create documents and then store them in the cloud. Great for sharing documents and photos with others. You can retrieve documents or photos from any device anywhere. Password Keeper: This is the biggest headache for most of us. Keeping the information safe is a big concern and being able to put our hands on them at a moment’s notice is key. Try LastPass, an awardwinning app! You only have to remember one password, the LastPass master password. Offline access to your data via the browser extensions and the mobile apps. Sync all of your passwords and logins across all of your computers and devices. LastPass never has the key to your encrypted data, so your information remains safe. Like most apps, upgrades available. Staying organized starts with creating and maintaining habits which adds structure and routines to your day. Technology can play a big role when using the right tools that make sense for you.BBM Esmi Gonzalez, Professional Organizer, Certified AIOP / Principal Sort It Out, LLC (210) 818-8250 SORTITOUTSA.COM
