So What

Several years ago, with our boys starting elementary school, my friend, Mike, proudly shared his son’s response to a recent test question. The question asked students to name the four seasons. Chad’s response was dove season, quail season, turkey season and deer season. To this day, I don’t understand how a teacher could mark the answer wrong and my only criticism is that Chad didn’t include a reference to antelope, javelina, pheasant, geese and duck seasons in the margins. In Texas, dove season is underway and most of the other seasons are so close at hand that minds are wandering and work productivity is already declining. While Texas boasts three of the top ten largest cities in the United States, we still have one foot firmly rooted in hunting and outdoor recreation. We do things in a big way in Texas and the statistics prove this out. We have the highest number of white-tailed deer in the nation, between 3.3 and 4 million. We also have the highest deer harvest, around 550,000 annually. In 2012, outdoor enthusiasts purchased 2.58 million hunting, fishing or combined licenses, generating $86.2 million in revenues. The economic impact on Texas is even greater, estimated between $2 and $4 billion. The Real Estate Center at Texas A&M University reported more than 5,000 rural land transactions in 2012 with landmark prices occurring in 2012 and into 2013. Not surprising, most of these properties were purchased for recreational use, which in Texas is synonymous with hunting. Equally impressive, hunting lease rates continue to increase with rent eclipsing the $15 per-acre mark becoming common. So what is it that drives hundreds of thousands of hunters to the woods, brush, fields, plains, and marshes each fall? Part of the answer lies in both the abundance and the quality of the quarry that we hunt. However, from my perspective, the real answer is more subtle and deeper-rooted. Hunting bonds us to nature, our family and our friends. It renews us after a long week of work, provides an outlet for our stresses and distractions, and stirs the memories of shared moments. I started hunting with my dad when I was 6 years old. The mornings always started at 4:30 a.m. and I remember the sound of his voice urging me to get up, the smell of the Texas Hill Country at dawn, seeing my breath pasted against a rising sun in the cold fall air, my dad’s steady hand when I was overcome by “buck fever” and sleeping with my head on his lap as we drove home in our 1960 GMC truck on Sunday night. My kids are grown now, but some of our greatest memories are those we made at the deer lease. We have logged hundreds of hours

staring trance-like into the mesquite embers of our fires, all the more memorable with the aroma of peach cobbler baked in a Dutch oven. Both of my kids learned to drive by age 10 and barely big enough to reach the clutch in my 39-year-old GMC pickup, “Old Blue.” They too, have the memories of the smell of early morning in the brush country, the sight of their breath hanging in the winter air, the unexpected heart rate when a rutting white-tailed buck steps from the brush, and falling asleep exhausted and content at the end of the day. The great outdoors and hunting have been a consistent gift and teacher during my lifetime. Almost by definition, the conveniences are fewer and the hardships are greater. This is where practical life lessons like changing a flat tire, starting a fire and hard work come in greater quantities for kids. This is a place where you learn respect for life and one another, where friendships grow deeper and memories are made. My dad told me when I was young, “Remember, always go for the trip, and anything you kill is just extra.” His message is just as accurate today as it was then. We are blessed to have some of the nation’s best hunting opportunities, but it is the bond to nature, our heritage, family and friends that stirs us this time of year. The wonderful thing about my own experiences is that they are duplicated countless times by others each season—those with whom I share a common bond and heritage, hunters. Stretching is a very important aspect to joint mobility, health and overall function. Most of us have learned this early on in childhood from our PE coaches. Some of the things we might remember are: always stretch before activity, don't bounce and breathe deep breaths. If we were to hurt ourselves, the question that usually comes up is, "Did you stretch?" Stretching is a great thing when it is done properly. What I hope to get across is HOW and WHEN to stretch for maximum performance. Most Sports Science research is demonstrating a better approach to stretching. Studies have shown that static stretching before activity was not effective at preventing injuries. Stretching immediately before activity, actually showed a decline in performance and explosiveness. So What Now? Stretch or Not Stretch? Stretching is great when done appropriately. Here are some facts to help make your decision regarding when and how to stretch. 1) Stretching immediately before activity has been shown to reduce explosiveness and performance. 2) Stretching to prevent injury has not shown to be effective. 3) There are many benefits to stretching such as increasing flexibility, reducing scar tissue, increasing blood and lymph flow as well as nervous system firing. 4) The type of sport or activity matter greatly in deciding how and when to stretch. A gymnast may want to warm up by doing cardio with plyometrics and going through ranges of motion. A runner may want to jump rope or bounce on the calves, skip, lunge etc. Try this... • Add a DYNAMIC warm up to your sport or activity. Prepare your body for the sport and the movements that you will be doing. This can be as simple as just going through the motions. This will also activate your muscle memory and prime your nervous system. • Try stretching AFTER your workout. Stretching while the body cools down is relaxing to it. The benefits don't stop there, stretching before bed can also lead to better nights sleep. • Get someone to help you stretch DYNAMICALLY. If you do not have a partner, use a rope, wall or the ground to help you. Apply a 10 lbs./10 second force against what you want to stretch, then breathe and relax. Voila! You have just dynamically stretched. Hopefully you have gained some insight from this article to get the most out of your activities. By the way, always consult with a professional if stretching is not helping or making a difference in your activities. Some of these include a physical therapist, primary doctor or massage therapist. A Structural Chiropractor can also help determine if your spine and nervous system are functioning at full potential. This is done by looking for the Primary Condition (Structural Shift) in the spine. By eliminating the Primary Condition, the symptoms (aka Secondary Conditions) tend to clear up. When Joe and Ann Kercheville purchased their ranch on the Joshua Creek in the Texas Hill Country they had no idea that one day it would be one of the country’s premier hunting destinations. However, the couple that are both avid hunters and savvy businesspeople, soon realized that the terrain of their ranch was laid-out perfectly for hunting. “We often traveled to England and Scotland to hunt driven pheasant and during our travels we kept running into other Texans who were also traveling overseas to hunt,” said Ann. Joe added, “For business people, the time that it takes to go on these hunts is the biggest concern. For someone to go hunt for two to three days overseas it takes a week total once you factor in the travel time. We started thinking about our ranch, with its running water, hills, valleys and ideal location and what a fantastic hunting resort it

would make. We believed that we could offer the same great hunting experience minus the inconvenience of the extra travel time.” The Kerchevilles decided to give it a go and opened up Joshua Creek Ranch for wingshooting in October of 1990. The mission of the ranch was to provide an exceptional outdoor experience for shotgunning enthusiasts. Throughout the years, Joshua Creek Ranch has proven to do just that. Combining an extended hunting season (September through March) with a wide variety of gamebirds, this Texas Hill Country paradise has been delighting shooters from all across the United States and beyond for 25 years! During those 25 years Joe and Ann have grown Joshua Creek Ranch to include not only European-Style Driven Pheasant Shooting, but also hunting for Quail and Upland Birds, decoyed Mallard Ducks, free-roaming Whitetail and Axis deer, Rio Grande

Turkey, fly-fishing for Rainbow Trout and three fully automated clay bird shooting scenarios: a sporting clays course, a single wobble trap and a triple trap wobbler. “Hunting is a big part of the Texas culture,” said Joe. “It is used a lot for business entertainment and we wanted to offer a level beyond what people had experienced in Texas before. We provide a high-end hunting experience with excellent hunting, superb lodging and gourmet dining. Here the host can have fun without the work or worry.” Joshua Creek Ranch serves up a big dose of Texas hospitality too. Open year-round, seven days a week, their experienced team of professionals ensure excellence from the hunting fields, to the dining room, to the lodging accommodations and the pro shop. “We are only closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and Easter,” said Joe. The gamebird hunting at Joshua Creek Ranch is done in the company of professional guides and their welltrained pointing, flushing and retrieving dogs. “All of this is provided to ensure our guests’ enjoyment in the field while hunting up quail, pheasant, chukar, and Hungarian and Spanish red-legged partridge,” said Ann. Joshua Creek Ranch also offers a host of other outdoor recreational activities to round out their guests’ stay, including canoeing, kayaking and tubing an isolated two-mile stretch of the Guadalupe River that runs along the

Ranch’s northern boundary. As for the accommodations, Joshua Creek Ranch offers single rooms to ranch houses and can currently sleep 30. According to Joe, “We are adding 12 additional guest rooms, some that will be double occupancy. When we are finished we will be able to sleep an additional 20 guests.” In addition to the expanded guest accommodations, a large conference room is being built to hold meetings, reunions and gatherings of all sorts. As equally impressive as the hunting offered at Joshua Creek Ranch is the gourmet dining enjoyed at the on-site Cypress Lodge restaurant. According to Ann, “the restaurant specializes in serving wild game. The menu is typically set, however guests can certainly make special requests.” In addition to the guests of Joshua Creek Ranch, the Cypress Lodge is available for private events such as rehearsal dinners, reunions and other special group events. “Since we first opened our guests have enjoyed the food so much that they continuously requested our recipes for the game dishes and other menu items they have enjoyed while dining with us. This lead us to publish a cookbook, Hunter’s Harvest, filled with the Ranch’s most requested recipes,” added Ann. Joshua Creek Ranch offers its guests a superior hunting experience. It has been recognized as a Beretta Trident Lodge for Excellence in Upland Bird Hunting, an Orvis Endorsed Wingshooting Lodge and a recipient of the 2013 Award of

For Joe and Ann, Joshua Creek Ranch is a labor of love. Both are native Texans whose roots run deep. “We love Texas and feel tied to the land. I am proud to say that I am a fifth generation Texan and Ann is a fourth,” stated Joe. “This is a place that we want to nurture and preserve for our children and grandchildren. Dementia: What Can We Do?

Patients worldwide are concerned about developing dementia. They frequently ask, “What is the difference between Alzheimer’s and dementia?” Dementia was characterized as the silent epidemic as early as 1980. As the population of industrialized nations ages, the incidence (actual cases) of dementia has been rising dramatically. Positive lifestyle changes and medical advancements, particularly in cardiology, prolong our lifespans. However, with this extended lifespan, we see higher dementia risk. Dementia is a syndrome associated with a generalized decline in cognitive function from previous levels. Symptoms may include memory loss, gait difficulty, mood and behavior changes and even sleep disturbance. The term dementia does not indicate the cause but the cause should be evaluated, as this could effect treatment options dramatically. The types of dementia are extensive but could include Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, Frontal lobe dementia, Parkinson’s disease, Lewy body dementia, alcoholism, hypothyroidism, B-12 deficiency, syphilis and many others. When being evaluated, the time course of symptoms and physical findings on neurologic exam are paramount in importance. Secondarily, some specific lab studies and brain imaging assist the physician in ruling in or out all the potential causes of dementia. Once diagnosed correctly, treatment then focuses on the underlying cause and symptoms. Some patients may benefit extensively from treatment such as those with B-12 deficiency, low thyroid or syphilis. Other patients may only have modest benefit from available therapies. Addressing the behavior issues and sleep problems can often be the

biggest help for caregivers. Interestingly, while the incidence (cases) of dementia has been on the rise with the increase in the elderly population, some recent studies are indicating a lower prevalence (risk). The US Health and Retirement Study showed a decline from 12.2% in 1993 to 8.7% in 2002. This decline appears to be associated with improved control of vascular disease and rising education levels. A recent rise in obesity and diabetes threatens this trend. To lower your risk you should take some very basic steps early in life. Many dementia syndromes are thought to begin decades before symptoms appear. Education, physical exercise, mental exercise, control of blood pressure, glucose levels and limiting alcohol use to 1-2 drinks per day could all lower your overall risk. Practically speaking, avoiding conditions or habits that increase your stroke risk and engaging in regular exercise (aerobic activities and activities that challenge your mind) lowers your risk for developing dementia. Routine visits to your primary care physician is vital to identify and treat hypertension, diabetes, obesity and high cholesterol. Future articles will discuss Alzheimer’s disease. This frightens many Americans and understanding the disease could help lower our anxiety. Alzheimer’s is a complex topic with a varied presentation. A home is made of love and dreams. For some people this old saying is just that, a famous quote that hangs above the doors of their houses. But for Michelle Kirby-Flores who moved from Boerne to Sisterdale with her family two years ago, there could be no truer adage. A short time after the boxes were unpacked and they settled a bit into their new home, Kirby-Flores fulfilled her lifelong dream—she and her husband discovered a century-old gem and transformed the four bedroom residence into a quaint

little shop—Sisterdale Market. “This all started because one day I woke up and realized we were out of coffee creamer. To get some I would have to drive back to town, which was still 13 miles away,” she said. “My husband smiled at me and said, ‘Well, you should do something about that.’ Living so far out in the country had its disadvantages; the little conveniences were farther away. And since I’ve always dreamed of owning my own little store, there was no better time than the present to open a shop.” So with that in mind, they got to work. And in less than a month Sisterdale Market welcomed its first customer. In just the two years that the store has been open, thousands of

people from all over the country have stopped by for a visit. Living in a town that is the corridor to famous Hill Country wineries it seemed only fitting that the market carried products that exuded that similar appeal of Texas love. Before you even enter the doors of the shop you’re greeted by colorful country-inspired décor and lush native plants. Inside, you’ll find an abundance of fresh produce, farm eggs and milk, rustic collectibles, trinkets and postcards, famous Fredericksburg favorites and Kirby-Flores’ favorite - retro candies, sodas and toys. “We are big supporters of buying local. So we carry as much local products as we can: salsas and rubs, farm eggs and grass-fed beef, lotions and soaps. People who live here, and especially tourists, love that we have those things. But what I really love is to see grandparents come in with their grandkids and show them these candies and toys they grew up with. They love the stories,” she said.

Sisterdale conveniently runs along the TransAmerica Trail bringing dozens of travelers to the market every cycling season. In addition, the shop is a gathering place for motorcyclists, ranchers and tourists. “We meet people from all over. It’s amazing to get to hear the stories of their travels,” Kirby-Flores said. “Every Thursday morning a group of locals come here, drink coffee and just hang out. To be a place that offers that sort of togetherness is amazing.” That sense of community that she describes is not something foreign to this small Hill Country town. In fact, it is the very philosophy that it stands for. “When we came here, people immediately welcomed us with open arms. They took us in, supported us and continue to do so every day,” KirbyFlores said. “People here look out for each other. There is a sense of belonging that is hard to describe. But when tourists come here, they see it. It’s wonderful to be a part of.” BBM

So it’s a typical work day, you walk into your office and almost immediately you check your email inbox. It’s now an hour later and you’ve barely made any progress. Sound familiar? Studies show that email spam makes up about 45% of all messages we receive. Here are eight tips to build new habits to help you quickly sort, respond and take action on messages. 1. Schedule email time, check emails three times a day, morning, after lunch and late afternoon. Schedule times that make sense for you and stick to it. 2. If you are addicted to your inbox, pull the plug on email notifications. This includes notifications from social media. 3. Unsubscribe to unwanted and unread emails from retailers, newsletters and coupon offers with programs like unroll.me and The Swizzle, both apps are FREE. 4. When going through your emails, if you see ones you can respond to quickly do it then and there. All others drag and drop to appropriate folders. 5. We have computer folders to help us locate information quicker, do the same with your emails. Create email folders, drag and drop your important emails by subject. If your subject is too broad and the subject has too many layers, create sub-folders (ex: Folder: Sales – sub-folders: Active Sales, Pending Sales, Closed Sales). (Place your mouse over the main folder (Sales), then right-click on it, a box opens up, click “New Folder”). These sub-folders will be located under the main folder. 6. Use your calendar. If you receive an evite, appointment reminders and meeting requests, place them on your calendar immediately after reading your email then delete that email. 7. Respond with clear and shorter emails. Some email threads can go on for days, literally. Stick to the subject at hand. Also in the subject line, be specific about the email reference. This makes locating emails much quicker when having to refer back to them. 8. Delete old emails. If you’ve not referred to them in a couple of weeks, it’s not important enough to keep. Purge, purge, purge. Google will soon introduce a solution for cluttered inboxes crammed with promotional emails. An obvious and clearly marked “unsubscribe” link will appear at the top of the header field in marketers’ emails, instead of at the bottom, where there are barely noticeable. You'll be able to unsubscribe without hunting through the email and without having to leave Gmail. Microsoft Outlook, hope you’re next! Google recently added pre-set “Labels” or categories to their Gmail. Currently there are three labels; Primary for person-to-person correspondence; Social for social networks and media and the third being Promotions for deals, offers and retailers. You simply drag your

Latest Texas Housing Activity Data Released

ales of existing Texas homes in July were at the same relative pace as last year, according to data released Thursday by the Real Estate Center at Texas A&M University. Data from participating Multiple Listing Services (MLS) reporting to the Center show 29,456 homes sold statewide during the month. That’s two percent more than the same month last year. The 165,992 existing home sales to date in 2014 are one percent more than the same period in 2013. July 2014 housing activity data on 47 Texas MLSs is posted on the Real Estate Center’s website.
