Vaudreuil-Dorion Parc-de-la-paix to be renamed for former provincial education minister John Jantak Your Local Journal

Parc-de-la-paix on St. Charles Avenue will be renamed Parc Paul GérinLajoie at an upcoming ceremony to honour and pay tribute to the former Vaudreuil-Soulanges Liberal Member of the National Assembly (MNA) and Dorion resident, announced Mayor Guy Pilon at the Monday evening council meeting, April 18. A resolution to proceed with the name change was unanimously adopted during the council session. Pilon said the decision to rename the park was made because Gérin-Lajoie, who is now 96, was appointed Quebec’s first Minister of Education in 1964, a position he held for just over two years, and for the significant improvements he has made to provide a basic education to the less fortunate around the world. Among the many important contributions he made during his time as education minister, Gérin-Lajoie is credited for revamping the province’s English and French high schools and establishing the comprehensive high school system (École secondaire polyvalente) during Quebec’s tumultuous ‘Quiet Revolution’ period in the 1960s, said Pilon. “It’s an honour for the city to pay tribute to Gérin-Lajoie,” said Pilon who doesn’t foresee any opposition to the change. “Around the year 2000 we had a lot of projects that were called ‘de-la-paix’. I don’t think anyone will object to the new name,” said Pilon.

Parc-de-la-paix was created with landfill that came from early infrastructure work that included laying sewers and water pipes as the city underwent a major construction and development phase in the 1960s. EDITOR’S CORNER

Life in the Past Lane…

High time The federal government has finally confirmed that legalized marijuana is on its way in 2017 and of all the things we’re apt to protest against, this really oughtn’t to be one of them. According to the most recent stats available, Canada spends over $2 billion annually in its war on drugs when police, court, and correction facility costs are all tallied, $500 million alone of which is linked to enforcing marijuana laws. It’s an outdated and somewhat paternalistic viewpoint that has rendered pot’s criminal associations and any argument to maintain its prohibition is weak and hypocritical in light of the legal status allotted to tobacco and alcohol. One of the perks of living in a free and democratic society includes the freedom to decide what to consume, whether intellectually or physically. And while laws are ostensibly in place for citizen protection, common sense needs to be factored into the equation. Infantilizing the constituents is costly and ineffective. If money that’s been earmarked for the war on weed were freed up, police forces could target growing areas of criminal activity like cybercrime, identity theft, and fraud – far more of a threat than the casual pot smokers. With an estimated 2.3 million cannabis users in the country, the sheer potential revenue of at least decriminalizing – if not legalizing – the plant might be the very boost our sagging economy needs.

As reported in Your Local Journal over a decade ago, Hudson Auto Tech garage phased out its gas sales in order to focus on its car repair service. Fast forward to 2016 and owner Joe Petrosa is still at the helm of the garage that has now expanded to include additional bays and a second floor.

Dear Editor: editor@yourlocaljournal.ca Dear Editor, In response to recent comments and letters in this forum and social media, I will break tradition and publicly support certain decisions taken by the St. Lazare city council. When the leaf collection situation became a problem last year, we asked city council to find a solution. They did and implemented a $25 pick-up fee starting this year. We may not all be happy with the results but they analyzed the situation and came up with what is probably the fairest outcome possible. This is a damned if you do, damned if you don’t situation. If they hadn’t done anything, people would have complained, they find a solution, people still complain. I am sure some people are saying, “He must have a house with no trees!” So I want to set the record straight – I do have trees, lots of them – and year in, year out, put over 100 bags to the curb every year. Am I happy about paying more? No, but I do find it fair and in the best interest of the community, I fully support the decision. We are quick on the trigger to criticize every decision made and it’s much easier to complain than congratulate someone on a job well done. It’s good to hear sometimes that, contrary to what is perceived, not all are disenchanted with our city council and quite a few think they are doing a very good job considering all the challenges they are faced with! Paul Lavigne St. Lazare Dear Editor, In response to N. Saunders question in last weeks ‘Dear Editor’ asking... “Do we really need a Director of Town Planning and the Environment,

as well as an Environmental Project Manager?” Unfortunately, I do not know the answer, but assume that hiring another individual is one way the administration of St. Lazare spreads the responsibility on such files. Otherwise why would St. Lazare have hired a $48,000 per annum person to organize this years, three-day ‘au Galop’ event? Rather ironic, or maybe idiotic, to pay more for a full time organizer for 2016 au Galop, than what was raised for the charities at the 2015 au Galop. It is so easy to hire more people, when someone else (taxpayers) are paying the bills. Alan Nicol St. Lazare Dear Editor, I was driving last week on Route Harwood just past the Hudson Shopping Centre when I heard a loud bang followed by what sounded like a large rock rattling around in my rear passenger wheel well. At first I just thought it would dislodge on its own but, as I continued driving, I realized it wasn’t a rock. My mechanic only needed a few seconds to determine my shock had blown…again! I had replaced it not two months earlier due to the variety of potholes that line the far edge of Route 342. I drive at the speed limit, and I am as careful as one can be on that wretched road. Which municipality is responsible for the maintenance of that section of Harwood? Two blown shocks in as many months, fix it already! Greg Mitchell St. Lazare Continued on page 9

THE SOAPBOX CARMEN MARIE FABIO

The long and the short of it I blinked when my lunch date, a dear friend, walked into the restaurant last week as I hadn’t seen her for a month or so. Her previously short cropped hair had been replaced with shoulder length auburn tresses with blonde highlights. “Cool,” I said. “I feel like a fraud,” she replied. It’s not that she’s not grateful for the wig that was given to her free of charge, but rather that the abrupt transition from having a full head of hair to chemotherapy-induced baldness covered with acrylic locks felt completely foreign. But having the wig also boosts her confidence so that she’s not seen as ‘sick’ by those she encounters. “People battling cancer are fighters and I think the wig helps them to feel like they are doing just that; by giving the ability to go and get a feel of normal again.” Like most things in life that we take for granted until they’re gone, most of us don’t give our hair much thought other than wash and wear and the odd colour change. But to suddenly be without what, for many of us constitutes a large portion of our identity, is an indignity in a difficult battle. I don’t think it’s sexist to say hair plays a more substantial role in women’s lives than men’s so it’s with deep admiration that I tip my hat to the gals who’ll be shearing short – in some cases bald – for the upcoming Shave2Save event this April 30 at the Hudson Fire Department, the third in an annual fundraising initiative to raise funds for the Canadian Cancer Society (see story on page15). Two of my boys who’ll be taking part (the third opting to wait until his hair is long enough to be used for an actual wig) are daring, challenging, and goading me into joining them. Having just been surpassed in height by everyone in the house by the growing boys that I foolishly keep feeding, the poofy hairstyle is the only thing that keeps me taller than them and I’ve threatened my youngest I’d adopt a Marge Simpson hairstyle to preserve my hierarchy. He responded by patting me on the head. At this writing, I’m still sitting on the chicken fence and while I’ve sported virtually every hair colour under the rainbow and had styles ranging from frizzy curls to punk spikes, the thought of cutting it all off just ain’t sitting well. Being bald means my face will have to do all the work. A participant in the Shave2Save event, who last year chopped off her 17-inch long dark hair, told me she realized after it was gone that she used to hide behind her hair and its loss forced her out of a comfort zone. And I guess for most of us, that’s the scary part but not nearly as scary as battling cancer. My buddy told me she doesn’t wear the wig at home and as a nod of respect to her perfectly shaped bald head, her husband bought her a pair of Doc Martens, just like the pair she wore when they first met. I like the symbolism of the boots as rebellion in the fight against cancer and the bald heads you’re bound to be seeing over the next few weeks are a kickass gesture of solidarity for those going through a fight that, in one way or another, touches us all. 6

On a chilly Monday morning, April 18, representatives from local businesses and tourist attractions, organizations, event planners, farmers, elected officials, and city staff gathered inside the newly built chalet in Éperviers Park for the unveiling of a revamped campaign celebrating NotreDame-de-l’Île-Perrot (NDIP). “The goal is to build connections between businesses and the city,” said NDIP Mayor Danie Deschênes. “Part of our mandate is developing Notre Dame’s lifestyle tourism business.” Another goal is to help local businesses and organizations get to know one another so they can promote their colleagues, she said. In its second year, the Tellement beau campaign aims to give the city’s residents a sense of belonging and to encourage local development and regional tourism, said Patrick Lefebvre, Development and Community Relations Manager for NDIP. Lefebvre said 22 organizations participated in last year’s campaign, which saw 5,000 visits to its dedicated website and 6,000 Likes on Facebook per week, and more than 7,500 guidebooks were distributed in 2015. “You are all important people to our city, and that’s why I appreciate your

participation,” Lefebvre said. He invited participants to a table laden with mosaic-like pieces of the campaign’s new logo and asked them to put the pieces together. A few minutes later people clapped as the assembled logo was revealed. “It’s our campaign’s new identity,” Lefebvre said. “It’s so beautiful.” When it was revealed Lefebvre had designed the logo, Deschênes quipped, “He’s ours. He’s not looking for a job.” Last fall participants got together to decide the revamped campaign’s new goals — to get people adopting the “Perrotdamois” way of life by taking part in local events and supporting local businesses, promoting the area, and increasing a sense of belonging for residents, the feeling of ‘this city is ours,’ Lefebvre said. This year’s new campaign tools include a brand new website with a #tellementbeau photo gallery featuring photos taken by citizens, tourists, organizations, families, city employees, “you and me” that can be shared on social media using the hashtag, he said. The Tellement Beau Express bimonthly newsletter will inform people about NDIP happenings so instead of coming for apple picking or a haircut they extend their visit, Lefebvre said. A bimonthly quiz will test people’s knowledge of NDIP, its geography and what people can do around town. Geolocation features on the campaign’s website make it easy to find local businesses and organizations on a map of the area. Continued on page 26

West Island CIUSSS welcomes Ste. Anne’s Hospital into its health care domain John Jantak Your Local Journal

The recent transfer of Ste. Anne’s Veterans’ Hospital from federal to provincial government control was welcomed by Benoît Morin, President and Director General of the newly-formed West Island Centre intégré universitaire de santé et de services sociaux (CIUSSS), during a meeting with reporters at the Lakeshore General Hospital last Friday, April 15. Morin, along with West Island CIUSSS President and board chairman Richard Legault, provided a status report on the continuing efforts made by the newly organized CIUSSS which became operational on April 1 to continue streamlining health care services within its mandated territory and improve the quality of care provided to its clientele. The recent integration of Ste. Anne’s Hospital into the CIUSSS domain, which also took place on April 1, means that another level of service is becoming available to address the needs of the region’s growing elderly population. A part of the health-care facility is currently undergoing a transition to a centralized geriatric care centre that will cater to the specific health needs of seniors, said Morin. Even though the hospital is no longer under federal jurisdiction, Morin said despite the hospital’s transition to its new avocation, the West Island CIUSSS is committed to providing the same level of care and service to the veterans living at the facility as was provided when it was administered federally. In order to allay any fears some veterans may have about a reduction in the quality of care they receive, Morin said the West Island CIUSSS is organizing a tour of the facility for administrators who will meet with veterans, listen to their concerns and address any fears the may have about the transition. The inclusion of Ste. Anne’s Hospital in the West Island CIUSSS adds to the list of health organizations they

West Island police files Station 3 covering Île Bizard, Pierrefonds-Roxboro and Ste. Geneviève A 19-year-old man was injured by a bullet Friday night, April 15 at a residence on Athena Street. Const. Daniel Maheu reports that when police arrived around 11 p.m., they found the victim had been hit in the lower body. Police speculate the actual shooting took place at a different location. Media Spokesman Const. Daniel Lacoursière said the victim was not cooperating with police who were having a hard time getting a coherent version of events. The young man was transported to hospital and police don’t fear for his life.

Letters Continued from page 4 Dear Editor, “You are breaking the law, according to article 168 of the Education Act. This conduct is a disgrace!” That’s what I said at the Pearson board Executive Committee meeting on April 18, 2016, following the chairman’s attempt to prevent me from speaking at Public Question Period time. This is another example of the need for Bill 86 which, among other things, scraps executive committees, and grants leadership roles to parents, teachers, principals and support staff in the running of their schools. After a few weeks of parliamentary hearings on the draft law, where briefs were submitted, one theme became apparent. There is a clash between parent organizations and school board associations. The former accuse the boards of using intimidation tactics, in attempts to bully and harass people, who critically analyze boards’ decisions. Since the inception of linguistic school boards, in 1998, I have been involved, strictly as a volunteer, in school board matters. ••• A 50-year-old man retrieving a package from the middle of the road on Gouin Ouest near Boulevard Lalande was a victim of a hit and run April 11 around midnight. After arriving home, he saw a box lying on the westbound side of Gouin. In walking over to pick it up, he was struck by a passing car that he estimates was travelling at about 60 kilometres per hour. He fell onto his right side in the path of an oncoming car from the other direction that swerved at the last minute. Upon catching his breath, he went into his house where his wife tended to his injuries which, at the time, appeared superficial. Due to the headlights, the victim was unable to identify the vehicle other than to say it was likely a car and not a truck. He sought medical help for his persistent pain and, on the doctor’s advice, filed a police report. Police are asking anyone with information on this event to contact the

state without any hesitation, the following: There is not one shred of evidence to show the Quebec English School Boards Association (QESBA), in its entire history, has been of any pedagogical, cultural, and economic value to any English school, classroom or student. Whereas former Education Ministers Pauline Marois (textbooks), François Legault (school fees), Line Beauchamp (governance), and Michelle Courchesne, creator of Bill 88 which gave us more parent commissioners and student ombudsmen, have been more helpful to the Anglo community than the QESBA ever was. The loudest complaint made by the English and French school board associations is that Bill 86 grants new powers to the Minister of Education. Specifically they refer to amendment 459.6, which states, “... the Minister may issue directives to a school board concerning its administration, organization, operation and actions.” This is good because sometimes the public needs protection from the boards. With this rule in place, the public would be much better served because the government would be the place to go, to appeal poor school board decisions, and to report the abuse of power. Anne de Bellevue and Senneville Project OASIS Police officers from Neighbourhood Station 1 in Kirkland will be intensifying their efforts regarding Highway Safety Code infractions, during the month of May, in conjunction with a city-wide initiative called Project OASIS. The purpose of the project is to incite drivers to share the roads with others in a respectful manner, by sanctioning delinquent and dangerous drivers. Police operations will take place at intersections that have been identified as “high risk” for accidents in the municipalities served by our station including St-Charles/Brunswick (Kirkland), St-Charles/Autoroute 20 (Beaconsfield), St-Charles/ Beaconsfield (Beaconsfield), Anciens Combattants/

Autoroute 20 (S-A-B), 550 AnciensCombattants (S-A-B), André-Brunet/ Aesop (Kirkland), and Victoria/Bedford (Baie-D’Urfé). To accomplish this, Station 1 will be assisted by officers from the Intervention (West) Section and the Regional Traffic Division. These specific squads will be responsible for enforcing the Highway Safety Code, by issuing fines to drivers for the following violations: blocking an intersection in traffic, red light violation, not respecting signs, speeding, and handling an electronic device while driving a motor vehicle. Road safety is a very important part of police work and is the responsibility of all police officers to promote good driving habits as well as enforcing the Highway Safety Code. These officers will also be present on the bicycle paths. Rest assured, all of these efforts are put in place for the purpose for making our roads a safer place to be and to ensure public safety.

H

a v e to be honest, dear readers. With the Syrian refugee debacle continuing to make internaPHOTO BY tional headlines MAURICE JEFFERIES daily, and hundreds believed drowned in the Mediterranean Sea while trying to reach Europe earlier this week, I find it sometimes difficult to put this whole humanitarian crisis into proper perspective. I know that what began as a trickle, turned in to a flood, and morphed in to a tsunami is heartbreaking. Particularly when images of parents and their youngsters are shown in living colour on TV and in the print media. But it all seems so far away. And then I see that big brown UPS truck and its always-friendly driver - Syrian-born Anas ‘Andy’ Fakhri dropping off deliveries around Hudson and environs including Rigaud, Pointe Fortune, and VaudreuilDorion, and it hits right home. They are people just like you and I. Obviously with a different language, history, and culture. But with the same desire to laugh, love, and live in the freedom that so many of us here in Canada just take for granted. --------------TRUE TESTAMENT - Regular readers of Your Local Journal may recall a story I wrote on Andy and his beautiful wife, Hanar, some three years ago now. About their frustrating battle with bureaucracy in their struggle to bring her parents to live with them in Vaudreuil-Dorion. For the record, although now in relative safety as opposed to then, they are still not here in Canada. But as a true testament to the human spirit, the couple who have three sons - Shadi (14), Sami (11), and 15 month-old Rimi - have never lost hope. And that hope was boosted im-

measurably this past Saturday, April 16, when Andy and Hanar were special guests of honour at a memorable and emotional fundraising evening of ‘song, reflection, community action, and belonging’ at St. James’ Anglican Church in Hudson spotlighting Vivianne LaRiviere in concert with proceeds going to help Syrian refugees, as well as the church itself. And what a wonderful evening it was. White linen table cloths, candles, delightful decor, gourmet finger food created by Cleopatra’s Dinners, wine, fabulous auction with donations from numerous local businesses, and talented musicians all there for the cause. Other special guests comprised Vaudreuil-Soulanges Liberal MP Peter Schiefke who would speak about his work experience with those affected by wars in East Africa, and Paul Clarke, executive director of Action Réfugiés Montréal, a non-profit, faith-inspired organization that seeks justice for refugees with a special focus on the most vulnerable. Namely women and children. Seeing them all sharing the same table, I couldn’t help but think that this little gathering really put a human face on the difficulties being faced by families seeking help for their loved ones in Syria, politicians of all stripes grappling with the problem, and organizations out there to do simply what they can. --------------WILL NEVER FORGET - As Andy told me the next morning, “We felt very special and privileged to be invited to this amazing evening and we really appreciate the kindness and generosity of everyone who participated and attended the concert. We were also very glad to meet Mr. Schiefke who was very supportive of me and my family and he promised to do everything he can to bring and unite us with our family. He mentioned that he will personally follow up on all the applications we have made concerning Hanar’s parents and her 22-year-old cousin, Wasim, who is

stuck in Sudan and is waiting for us to help save his life.” Added Andy, who has been driving for UPS for 15 years, “Since the story first appeared in Your Local Journal, everyone in Hudson has been very helpful and supportive of my family and we are very happy and proud to be included and adopted by this generous community. We will never forget your stand beside us and beside all the innocent Syrian children who have been displaced or who have died in this senseless war. “Viviane LaRiviere and her beautiful music, including her Anthem for Peace, was very touching and descriptive of the pain and agony that refugees from Syria feel when they are forced to leave their homes and run away from the death of war. A war of greed. And, finally, I would like to thank God for Canada and for us becoming Canadians. I and my family are blessed to know you and all the people in Hudson. We know that your love for us is unconditional and that we are at home here. And we hope all the people of Syria can share in this feeling.” --------------NOT SMOKE AND MIRRORS - A feeling clearly reflected in the opening remarks by Laurie Tomita who, together with Michael Legg, co-sponsored the evening. Said Laurie, “This We are Called to Care initiative, the brainchild of Vivianne LaRiviere, is not only designed to raise funds for the church and Syrian refugee support, but also to bring our community together. To explore a new sense of togetherness, of action, and of belonging. “Now that may sound like smoke and mirrors, but I assure you that when you leave this place tonight you will have experienced something new and very different. And we hope that we can repeat this experience for we realize the enormous task of helping and sharing our good fortune with those in need. And doing it as a community. United in action.” Bravo to one and all who made this one happen. Including musicians Bryson Davis, Noam Guerrier-Freud, Bill Riley, and the Gypsy Angels com-

For while attending the concert on Saturday, I happened to bump in to Hudsonites Marilyn and Tom Pound, who told me they were off to that city the following day to watch and support their daughter, Christy - now living in Halifax - who was running in the world-famous Boston Marathon on Monday. Said Marilyn, upon her return, “Christy ran a great race and it was so exciting to be part of the event. However, we did go with mixed feelings as we were all there three years ago happily congratulating her for a great run in the post-race meeting area when the bombings took place. Our son, Peter, and family live in Boston so she had a full cheering section complete with posters made by our grandchildren.” Way to go Christy! And as someone who wouldn’t run to catch a bus, I can only admire your fitness, dedication, and super stamina! --------------BOOK NOW - And now from Boston to books and bibliophile bargains not to be missed. For according to coorganizer, Loney Montemagno, there will be thousands of them priced as cheap as chips at the Wyman Memorial United Church’s annual sale on Friday, April 29, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Saturday, April 30, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.. Completely volunteerrun, this wonderful initiative raises funds for so many worthwhile causes both in our local community and further afield. Loney tells me that members of the Hudson Fire Department will be there during the day on Friday helping to carry, sort, and stack books prior to the doors opening. Barring, that is, an emergency call that will obviously take priority. Ergo, if you would like to help out from 9 a.m. for a couple of hours, Loney - who says that all hands would be graciously welcome - would love to hear from you. And she can be reached at (514) 453-9712. See you there? And that’s a wrap! E-mail: creation@videotron.ca

Oof, what a glorious weekend toiling in the soil. Er, make that garden. And to parryphrase PHOTO BY GREG JONES Igor Stravinsky, it really was a case of a Rake’s Progress. Sheesh, simply could not believe how much leaf raking I didn’t get around to in the fall. Either that or they all fell off my neighbours’ trees after my big clean-up. Nah, only kidding. That being said, however, I’m starting to think that if my compost heap gets any bigger, I’m probably going

to have to apply for a building permit from the town! And now, taking a break from outside, it’s time to catch up with some e-mails that I have received recently. Including several pertaining to my offer in last week’s column of sharing some of my ground cover Pachysandra plants with readers including this one from Jill Forrest who lives in St. Lazare. “Dear James. Your article showed up in a very timely manner. I was talking to a teacher in a school I work in yesterday asking for her help in my garden. I have been gardening for only a few years now and have to impose on my colleagues and friends for advice. “I was asking her if she knew of any

ground cover for a rather large area that we cleared out last fall that would spread quickly and be hearty. And the next day she brought in your article. Long story short, if you have an extra handful or two I would be most grateful.” Well, as you read this, I’m sure that Jill - together with her husband and big Hosta fan evidently, Ralph - have already planted the bucket or two that they picked up from my garden on Sunday afternoon. As I mentioned guys, like an infant, the first year they

Earth. The planet on which some 7 billion people now live is the third from the sun 92.9 million miles (149.6 km) away. Formed about 4.6 billion years ago, with an equatorial diametre of only 7,926 miles (12,755 km) and with two-thirds of its surface covered in water, to this day it is the only astronomical object in our known universe to harbour life. Incredible to think that Earth Day, being recognized and celebrated in almost 200 countries around the world on Friday, April 22, dates back to just 46 years ago when it was created by a certain American Senator by the name of Gaylord Nelson with a view to making people aware of the importance of keeping our planet healthy and clean with proposed environmental protection never before considered. The date, incidentally, was picked to follow the March equinox - always around March 20 - to mark the moment

Wrote Peter, “Could you give me any advice on how to protect my vegetables - as they grow - from the various neighbourhood critters, bugs, etc.? I lived in Pointe Claire for 26 years before. I used to cut up lemons and place them around the bases of the plants every three weeks. My veggie garden is located near the woods here. Lots of squirrels and chipmunks!” Well, Peter, welcome to the neighbourhood. And I wish I had the perfect answer. But, to be very honest, I don’t. They were here before any of us arrived and, through our gardening and bird feeders, we have provided them with a beautiful buffet to augment their natural diet of nuts and fruits from the trees. Moreover, given the extremely mild and relatively snow-free winter that we have just experienced with no significant deep freeze, they are all in fine fettle right now. Seemingly bigger, plumper, and more bushy-tailed than ever. However, here are a few tips that you might want to consider. If you don’t already, you might want to own a dog. Or invite a neighbour’s dog over on a regular basis. They just love hunting squirrels. Fake rubber owls and snakes near the veggie plot are also possible deterrent’s. Until they get used to them, that is, and start taking them for granted. One method that I have used with

varying degrees of success is sprinkling powdered blood meal - which is also a fertilizer by the way - around the plants or between the rows. One slight drawback, that you might find disagreeable, is that it can smell pretty awful when wet and will need regular replenishing after it rains. Another method that I have not tried, but which some old-time gardeners assure me does work if you are planning on planting bulbs, is actually peeing on them either before you set them in the soil or after. Seriously Peter, I’m not making this up! Something to do with the uric acid in urine that squirrels can smell a mile off. Go figure! And speaking of bulbs, squirrels just love to dig up and munch on Tulips and Crocus. Unlike Narcissus, Daffodils, Hyachinths, and Scilla which they tend to shun! Good luck. First ever Canicross event coming to St. Lazare

Lauren Mitchell Special contributor

The Guides Canins Canine Multisport Training Centre in St. Lazare will be hosting the inaugural Canicross race this mid-May as part of their annual Spring Trial event. Dogs and their accompanied owners will be competing in different activities as a team, with the goal for the canines to work on achieving their personal best. This year the centre is holding their yearly Spring Trial from May 14 all the way through to May 23. Guides Canins is searching for those who would either like to participate in the action accompanied by their four-legged friend, or for those who would simply like to come and watch the spectacle. “Canicross is a relatively new sport,” explained Julie Sansregret, owner of Guides Canins. “Its popularity is blooming in western Québec, as it is very popu-

lar around Québec City. Canicross is a great way to get both your dog and you in shape. It makes the walking/exercising dog duty a fun one. It takes minimal equipment, such as a dog harness, special bungee leash, belt to free your hands and a pair of running shoes. It is easy to learn, because everybody knows how to run and all dogs are natural pullers - you see the benefits instantly.” Sansregret said the event is the first one in the region. “We would love to bring the popularity of the sport here. Anyone who can run and who has an active dog can participate in the sport. They will also discover that we have great trails to do this locally.” The activities, taking place at the Guides Canins center located at 1200A Montée Poirier, St. Lazare, will begin Saturday, May 14, with the first edition of the FQSCA Sanctioned Spring Cani-

cross Race taking place. The activity will be compromised of a foot race as owners run through trails with their dogs in a harness. There will be the option of a 2-kilometre discovery race or a 5-kilometre sanctioned race. On the same weekend will be the Obedience/Rally Trial held by the Doberman Pinscher Club of Greater Montreal. Teams will be evaluated on their expression of partnership, communication, and ability to perform various tasks depending on level of registration. Also on Sunday, May 15, the Rat Sport Competition will be held. Rat Sports are based on the hunting skills of the dog and teamwork skills with their owner. Rat Sports began as a concept taken from dogs who worked on farms to catch all of the rats who might get into the famers’ crops or spread diseases in their animals. Today, Rat Sports involve evaluating dogs on their ability to find a hidden

Girls step up for Shave2Save initiative Carmen Marie Fabio yourlocaljournal

The April 30 Hudson Fire Department’s third annual Shave2Save fundraiser is quickly approaching and the number of girls and women taking part in this year’s event has jumped exponentially from last year with a total, so far, of nine gals prepared to shear off years’ worth of hair growth to both help make wigs for those undergoing cancer treatments and to raise funds for continued medical research.

“I attended the event last year with my daughter and this year, I decided to take part,” said Hudson resident Nathasha Menard who has worn her hair long for most of her life. While she won’t be one of the participants who’ll be ‘bicking’ – going completely bald via Bic razor – her long locks will be put to good use in crafting a wig for those going through chemotherapy. “My boss at Cunninghams Pub just beat breast cancer not long ago,” said Jessica King who’ll also be donating the tresses that reach mid-back to the

cause. “This is kind of in her honour.” King said she’s happy to provide the reciprocal support for the fire fighters and the community. Sifirah Slaney, 12 years of age, has opted to go completely bald for the event after being inspired by her friend Emerson Brooks, one of only two females to take part last year along with her mom, Shannon Lee Devouge. “I wanted to do it last year but I thought

I’d be embarrassed,” she said. “But after Emerson did it, I thought ‘I can do this’ so I decided to go for it.” Sifirah has, so far, raised $150 online but vows to start canvassing her neighbourhood for more donations. Emerson’s sister Sydney held off cutting her long blonde hair until she had graduated from sixth grade. Continued on page 24

your new dream home. Even if it’s not your first time, looking for a new home can be a difficult process, and finding the right home can almost seem impossible at times, especially when you want to move across the Ontario border. Rebecca Collett aims to put the pleasure back into your house-hunting experience, and she has the right experience and knowledge to help you navigate the real estate market in Ontario. If you’re a Quebecer looking for a home in Ontario, Rebecca is the ideal real estate agent and broker for you. While she lives in Quebec, Rebecca operates in Ontario, which uniquely qualifies her to deal with the real estate intricacies from both sides of the border. “I can navigate both sets of real estate laws, because I know the systems and I know the marketplace; I know the properties, and I know the areas,” Rebecca says. Rebecca not only knows the Ontario market, she can also guide you with an expert hand through the complexities of Ontario real estate laws that most buyers from across the border are not familiar with. “We use different forms. We have different laws. We do not use certificates of location. We use lawyers, not notaries. So the language and the forms you are used to in Quebec will be entirely different in Ontario”. When you’re working with Rebecca, you also enjoy the reassurance of working with a full-fledge broker. “I’m not just a realtor, I am a broker. That is a different license in Ontario, as opposed to Quebec. We have to take additional courses, gain additional knowledge.”

Choosing to work with Rebecca is signing on with over 10 years of solid cross-border real estate experience. Her approach is different. Salesmanship is only a part of the process; the other part, the most important aspect, is the partnership she nurtures with her clients. Before hitting the road to visit prospective new homes, Rebecca enjoys meeting her clients to get better acquainted, to impart some of her knowledge and wisdom and to prepare them to start looking at properties in Ontario. “I handle my business a little bit differently. I give my clients the full education on the buying process, because it is different. That’s where I separate myself from the rest of the pack.” When you meet Rebecca for the first time, you meet a fully prepared real estate professional. Rebecca plans ahead so that her clients do not waste time, stumble along, or encounter difficulties along the way. The forms, the real estate laws, the time spent on the road visiting prospective new homes, the negotiating... there is no need for those things to become overwhelming. Let Rebecca guide you through the process. “Your broker is almost like your therapist, holding your hand through the whole thing. You really do become a member of the family for that period of time,” Rebecca says with a smile. Rebecca Collett can be reached at (613) 677-4919, and you can also visit her website at http://www.moving2ontario.com.

The Country Homes Tour celebrates 60 years! 60 years ago the women of St. James’ Church launched what has become a great Hudson tradition, an opportunity to enjoy a lovely day in the country while visiting beautiful homes and gardens. Experience real Hudson hospitality and a scrumptious luncheon at the beautiful St. James’ Church by the Lake of Two Mountains or at St. Mary’s Church. Spring bouquets donated by friends and neighbours grace luncheon tables. This event, the St. James’ Church primary fundraiser, also benefits many other charities. 60 years ago, Mrs. Betty Piper was one of three women who envisioned and began this popular tour. On the occasion of this anniversary, we are pleased to include the original Piper property on Main Road, Hudson which was on the first tour in 1956! Edengreen was built in 1993 on the escarpment of the Lake of Two Mountains. This gracious stone and brick Tudor home overlooks the lake and is surrounded by English gardens. Its exterior design combines elegant country and farm-house styles. Follow stone steps or cobbled road lakeside to the next garden level where you will discover a verdant pond and secluded pond house. The cobbled road leads to the beach through a small orchard and lily garden. The handsome, recently restored barn, with unique full-wall trompe-

l’oeil trellis is more than 100 years old. It was once a stable for horse and carriage. “The goal when renovating our home five years ago was to create a warm country feel. We achieved this goal thanks to the accomplished artisans who made our dream home a reality. Wood for the wide plank floors and panelled and tongue and groove walls was mostly reclaimed and hand planed. Some of these materials were salvaged from 200 year old buildings and reworked, often using old world tools.” Discover for yourself the details that make this lakeside light-filled home unique. Note the velvety finish of cabinets, deep, intricate mouldings, and open concept simplicity. Stone and wrought iron are central to the design. Attendees will be given an overview of the home which will include descriptives by the artisans themselves. Tickets go on sale May 1st at the following outlets: • Décors & Tissus Sérénity 67 Cameron, Hudson 450-853-0635 • Source Santé 484A Main Road, Hudson 450-458-7547 • Alena Kirby 3200 Harwood, Vaudreuil-Dorion 450-455-6156 • Le Panier, 274 Lakeshore, Pointe Claire 514-695-7038 • Or by e-mail hudsoncountryhomestour@gmail.com

Shave2Save Continued from page 15 “This year she asked if she could donate her hair,” said Devouge who, though no longer sports the 17-inch ponytails she donated last year, is again taking part in the upcoming event. “Now it’s the three of us. The family that shaves together saves together.” Like last year, Emerson is taking part in memory of her grandparents who passed away from cancer and succinctly stated, “I want to kick cancer in the butt.” Collectively, the trio has raised $1500 as of press time. This will mark the third year Hud-

sonite Suzie Bowen has donated her long red hair to the Shave2Save initiative. “I want to be able to make a difference in someone’s life,” she said. “I’ve been able to raise $450 so far and I’m fortunate to have such amazing people in my life to donate that much, that quickly.” At 65, Hudsonite Regina (Oma) Brittain is the oldest of the women and plans to go completely bald for the event. “The works,” she laughed. “My husband died of cancer 11 years ago,” she said, “and he fought cancer when our daughter Vanessa was nine months old.” Brittain also cites a hairdresser friend who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. “I’m doing it for her; I’m doing it for

my husband and for all people that are sick with cancer.” The youngest participant of the girls is 10-year-old Abigayle Dumas who cites her dad, firefighter Andrew Dumas, as inspiration. “When I was little, my dad got cancer and survived,” she said. “I want to do this for all the people who have cancer, or whose parents have cancer. I don’t know what would happen if I didn’t have my dad anymore. I want to support people so they can survive.” The hair collected will go to the CanDonate program that provides wigs for free to cancer patients. Hair must be clean, dry, and secured at both ends in a braid or ponytail. The goal this year is to surpass

$8000 and the department welcomes everyone to come down and enjoy the festivities, including live music, face-painting and reptile displays for the kids, prize raffles, and tasty treats available for sale. Châtelaine Salon & Esthétique stylists Terri Creagan, Tracy Gledhill and Katie Van Kessel will be donating their hair-cutting and head-shaving expertise. Come help the team meet and have a great time while you’re at it. Fun starts April 30 at 1 p.m., 529 Main Road in Hudson. For more information, contact Andrew Dumas at (514) 513-3722 or to donate, consult convio. cancer.ca/goto/hfd2016.

Earth Day Continued from page 13 Considering getting rid of a lot of accumulated stuff that you have bought over the years at garage sales or whatever but have never used? Then why not get a bunch of friends together, set one up, and donate all the proceeds to a worthwhile community cause of your choice? As for all those books in good condition that are piling up, why not approach your local library and see if they

would like to receive them for their next book sale? Even old plates, dishes, and cutlery can be recycled to beautiful effect. One local artist, for example, buys crockery at a charity shop and then smashes it up to make individual pieces for her mosaics. Another opts for old cutlery that she incorporates, with beads and delicate driftwood, in truly exquisite hanging wind chimes. Proof positive of that old adage, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. And just one recycling idea that you too may want to experiment with in celebration of Earth Day 2016.

NDIP Continued from page 6 Videos posted online will include profiles of local businesses and a “Vox Pop” feature at major events will offer short, on-camera interviews with event goers on what they did and liked and what they’ll do next year, Lefebvre said. One “Perrotdamois” family will be chosen to participate in the city’s activities over the summer and share their adventures in articles, photos, and videos shared on social media sites. In ex-

change they’ll get two city camp registrations (childcare provided) free of charge. “This will encourage families to enjoy (NDIP) and events,” Lefebvre said, adding it will encourage families to adopt a “Perrotdamois” lifestyle and to buy locally. He said the campaign’s website and most information will be translated into English. “The community’s really important,” Shoshannah Bercovitch, a local hair stylist said after Lefebvre’s presentation. “It’s good to encourage each other’s businesses.” IMMEDIATE POSSESSION
