The Weekend Gardener Back-to-school in the garden

Terry O’Shaughnessy Special Contributor

Maybe it’s because I was one of those geeky kids who loved to go back to school in September. It was all about the gear. The new pair of shoes, the schoolbag, the new raincoat, and the agonizing choice of what colour paper to wrap all my new text books in for the year ahead. (There were three choices back then – burgundy, royal blue and dark green, and it was the same exquisite back-toschool dilemma every year). I think this all came into play when I spied in a garden centre recently a bright orange, oversize pencil sharpener. Why it was in the garden centre was ‰

I haven’t grown carrots in my garden for quite a few years, so what I also needed immediately was a bunch of /
