The weekend gardener Mysterious mistletoe

Terry O’Shaughnessy Specail Contributor

How can it be that one of the most successful parasites in the natural world has become the very symbol of romance at Christmas? Whereas mistletoe can never be hung too early in my view, it turns out the reality of this venerable symbol of kissing-at-Christmas is that it lives and feeds upon something else. Apple trees, birch trees—any trees at ¿ " host. Even the mighty oak, especially the mighty oak, serves greedy mistletoe and this has mysteriously become the symbol of seasonal romance. ; " # " ing under the mistletoe goes back to the ancients. The Romans hung sprigs of mistletoe, which they believed to represent peace and love, in their doorways during the feast of Saturnalia, a forerunner of Christmas. Across Europe, + " # -

ity but was said to protect you from ! 1 ? bonus. It was sacred to the Druids who concocted a major ritual centred on mistletoe and oak trees. On the ? " 1 ! dress in white and head to the nearest oak in darkness with their ceremonial sickles at the ready. The chief Druid would climb the oak, cut the mistletoe, carry it in white cloth and sac ! + " ! before it was all over. Which needless to say brings me back to my original K # ` ! + ( ? all its parts, by the way) become synonymous with kissing at Christmas? Apparently it was the Victorians ! # 1 + the servant class, it is said. Sprigs of mistletoe would be hung all over the ‘downstairs’ part of grand houses. There was an even further layer to # " ! decided that, following each kiss beneath a sprig of mistletoe, one of its berries must be plucked. When all

the berries were gone, your personal kissing season was over – though one suspects there must have been secret stashes of mistletoe in drawers across the Empire right through to the New Year. As for my mistletoe, which I hang every year, it didn’t come from some alpha Druid under the moon, or even [ 8 " ) ;
