The weekend gardener Prim roses Terry O’Shaughnessy Special contributor

@ P66 * January, I need something green and growing. Something spring-y. And I’m looking for pots of primrose because, with their striking velvety blooms and yolk yellow eyes, it never looks prim in the least. , = J lavish and ornate in an almost medieval tapestry way, like something from Camelot, or the Crusades. It makes a good show. ( 8 in jewel-like hues of red, blue, and pink with bright yellow centres (though solid pale yellow ones are also common). The deep rich blue of primroses can be almost royal, while the red is the exact shade of the best velvet party dress I ever owned (when I was seven years old). In any case, when the mind wanders during these endless days of January, a primrose on a desk can help a lot. 0 8 in much of Europe, the name ‘prim 1 + L word primerose % prima rosa – in both cases meaning X 1 , ' '

some perfect image in an illuminated Book of Hours, a primrose wouldn’t look out of place signifying something on a coat of arms, or some other heraldic shield with unicorns or lions. We actually don’t see too many primroses in the wild here. But in ap ground in open woods and lanes. In spite of the circumspectness of its spinstery name, the primrose is actually a bit of a shady lady. She enjoys growing beneath trees and hedges, 1 = / Primula polyantha blooms in ear U forms, sizes, and colors (and especially that dazzling blue). But most of the primroses we see in gardens are polyanthus hybrids, which range in color from white, cream and yellow to orange, red and pink. It also has an intriguing botan 0* && to EPO, evening primrose oil is a rich Y = and contains linoleic acid, one of the &ers, and the neuronal cell membrane. ? and the list of its medicinal uses goes on and on.

In Memoriam

Maureen Hampson

September 25, 1930 – December 30, 2019 Maureen died peacefully in Valleyfield Hospital on December 30, 2019. A long-time Hudson resident, Maureen grew up in Montreal, the third of four sisters. An avid dog-walker, Maureen was known as the “cookie lady” as she always had her pockets full of treats. She was a nature-lover, animal-lover, avid reader and very engaged in living her life to the fullest. She will be deeply missed by her four children, Terence (Carrie), Hilary (Mike), Greville (Carole) and Alexandra (Ivo) as well as her seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild, and many nieces and nephews and dear friends.

A heartfelt thank you to the staff at McCall Centre for their compassionate care. A special thank you to Bonnie Rose for all you have done for our family.

A huge thanks to Sylvie Major, Wanda from NOVA and Dr. Hyrniowski for allowing her to stay at home until the final weekend. We would also like to express our gratitude to the staff in Emergency at Valleyfield Hospital for the care provided. A private burial will take place in May at Mt. Royal Cemetery, followed by a celebration of life in Hudson at Auberge Willow. No flowers, please.

Online condolences and memories can be shared through www.glenoaks.ca

A donation to Hudson NOVA would be greatly appreciated.
