In Memoriam

Austin Archibald (Lee) Crowell Hudson Heights, Quebec December 15, 1927 – March 6, 2018 Lee passed away peacefully at Ste-Anne’s Veterans Hospital on March 6, 2018. He will be laid to rest in Nova Scotia at a later date. Thank you to the kind staff of the Ste-Anne’s Veterans Hospital. Lee was born on December 15, 1927 in Bridgetown, Nova Scotia. He was the elder of two sons born to Judge Kenneth Lee Crowell Sr. and his wife Harriet Edna (nÊe Anderson). He completed his early education through high school in Bridgetown, while maintaining an active interest in such sport activities as track and field, ice hockey, baseball, tennis and golf. He later graduated from Acadia University with a B.Sc. and then from Dalhousie University with a degree in law, winning the Stuart Lane Memorial Prize at graduation. For a time he practiced law in Nova Scotia, first in Bridgetown, then in Yarmouth, with time off for summer school studies in French, preparatory to a projected sojourn in France. This came about in the mid-1950’s in Paris where he taught English conversation in a French high school while pursuing postgraduate studies in conflicts of law at the University of Paris in the Faculty of Law. He returned to Nova Scotia in 1956 to take up the position of Executive Assistant to the Premier. Unfortunately, the convention induced him to resign this position due to a change in government following the provincial election of 1957. He was then invited to join the International Division of a noted pharmaceutical company (Smith, Kline, and French, Philadelphia) as head of the Montreal branch, where he advanced through a number of positions ranging from promotion planner to advertising manager to marketing manager. In 1964, he married the love of his life Jessie Kary in Montreal. In 1968, he joined the Canadian Wallpaper Manufacturers Ltd. in Toronto. He held the position of Vice-President, Marketing Corporate Group. In 1971, he learned that the Canadian Olympic Association (COA) was seeking to engage a CEO to prepare the organization for its greatest challenge: the hosting of the 1976 Summer Olympic Games by the city of Montreal. His love of sport prompted him to apply. He was named to the post in 1972 just in time to accompany the Canadian team to the Olympic Games of Munich. Over the ensuing nineteen years, he embarked upon programs and initiatives that made Canada and Canadian athletes recognized on the world sports scene. He retired in 1991. Lee was predeceased by his parents Kenneth Lee Crowell and Harriet Edna (nÊe Anderson) and his sister-in-law Avis (Bent) Crowell, Middleton.
