move forward in a positive way.” Town Manager Michel Perrier said renovation work on the new sports centre that will feature an ice hockey rink will begin in early 2016 and is expected to be completed by the start of the 2016-17 hockey season. “There’s about five months of work to be done to complete the facility so by the end of next August, it should be up and running,” said Perrier. “It’s definitely a big plus for the community and we’re ecstatic over the announcement.” The town will also embark on an ambitious program to convert and reconfigure Duhamel Road from a two-way artery into a one way street between Boulevard Cardinal-Léger and 5th Avenue. The revamped road will also feature a bicycle and pedestrian path with planned access to the shoreline along portions of land that are owned by the town. “Duhamel will be a large project,” said Perrier. “We plan to reconstruct a fairly large section of the road in 2017, but first we’re going to have a trial period next year where we’re going to convert the road into a one-way street with a portion of the road becoming a type of boardwalk and path for bicycles and pedestrians along the riverside.” Cardinal said the town expects there will be some opposition to the plan, but added there was also opposition several years ago when the town closed off a portion of Duhamel between 9th Avenue and Avenue Mgr Langlois at Bellevue Park and turned it into an exclusive bike and pedestrian path. “The end result is that when we closed the street, there have been more people coming to the park since then and they enjoy having unrestricted access to the river,” said Cardinal. “We want to do the same thing with this new proposal, to make Duhamel more user-friendly for bicyclists and pedestrians.”

The long-awaited Pincourt Sports Complex will finally become a reality, announced Mayor Yvan Cardinal during his presentation on state of the town’s financial status at the Tuesday evening council meeting, November 10. The completion of the sports complex by Groupe Thibault and Associates, along with the town’s ambitious project to reconfigure a large section of Duhamel Street that runs along the shore of the Ottawa River and turn it into a one-way street with bicycle and pedestrian paths along the riverside figured prominently as part of the town’s upcoming triennial program for 2016, 2017 and 2018. The completion of the town’s sports complex brings to an end a 15-year saga that originally pitted the first developers of the project against the municipality. Most recently, a legal dispute between Groupe Thibault and a private consortium led by Alexander Burrows in 2014 halted renovation of the sports complex until a Quebec Appeals Court ruling in July that sided with Groupe Thibault. The Burrows group had planned on building their own sports complex in neighbouring Notre Dame de l’Île Perrot. The resolution of the conflict between Thibault and Burrows means the project will finally be realized, Mayor Yvan Cardinal told Your Local Journal after the meeting. “I’m very happy especially for our citizens who will finally have access to a modern sports facility. “It’s about time that we will have this kind of centre to serve the needs of our citizens and the island’s population of over 45,000 people,” Cardinal added. “I’m glad that all the conflicts between the different parties are finally over and resolved. Now we can Two locations to serve you better:

The Town of Pincourt is planning on converting Duhamel Road between Boulevard Cardinal Léger and 5th Avenue into a one-way street with a bicycle and pedestrian path running alongside the Ottawa River.

“The traffic volume on Duhamel has diminished quite dramatically,” Cardinal added. “Duhamel is the only access point to the river. We’re on an island and this is where the river is most accessible for most of our population.” Perrier said the town will prepare an information blitz before the change

is implemented in 2016. “We’re going to have a lot of information available for our residents before we make the change,” he said. “Duhamel was once a major and important part of our road system. Now it’s considered more of secondary street because of the development of Cardinal Léger, Boulevard de l’Île and other streets in the town.”

EDITOR’S CORNER

Straight Áush Even the non-news-junkies amongst us could not escape the countdown and ensuing play-by-play of the great Montreal sewage dump that has been generating headlines and providing fodder for disputes amongst everyone from environmentalists to politicians. The floodgates finally opened November 11, despite the protests from both frontline residents and far-flung activists, and in the end, the opinion of a panel of scientists won out over the general ick-factor of having raw sewage discharged directly into the waterways of our regions, saying it was, essentially, the lesser of two environmental evils. The debate has mobilized the online community as comment submissions number in the thousands with everyone clamoring to be heard. In the wake of the dumping outrage, as has been pointed out by many in the cyber-verse, we’ve neglected to exercise our collective righteous indignation at the raw sewage dumping that goes on in major cities across Canada. In fact, even a walk along the shores of the Ottawa River that flows through our region is dotted with the tell-tale signs of inorganic waste material that could only have come from a toilet. Perhaps there’s a lesson here. Before we are so quick to leap off our thrones and go off the handle at what we perceive as large-scale wrongs, we should be taking a closer look at what gets proverbially flushed in our own back yards.

Dear Editor: editor@yourlocaljournal.ca Dear Editor, I would like to thank St. Lazare resident Alain Grégoire, his family and friends and the Club des Optimistes of St. Lazare for putting together the scariest, most entertaining haunted forest I have ever seen or experienced. Mr. Grégoire has been doing his haunted scenes for many years now, but decided that this year, he would ask for voluntary donations in support of the Vaudreuil-Soulanges Palliative Care Residence Foundation. Thanks to his hard work and creativity, thousands braved the haunted forest and gave a total of $1275 for the Foundation. The City’s Fire Department also helped to ensure everyone had a safe experience on Halloween night. Thanks to everyone who donated. This is another perfect example of the community rallying together to support this great cause. If you were unlucky enough to miss the experience this year, Mr. Grégoire is promising an even greater haunted forest in 2016. Get your courage ready! Julie-Anne Lambert Fondation de la Maison de Soins Palliatifs de Vaudreuil-Soulanges Hudson Dear Editor, Evidently the message of austerity does not affect civil servants; they want to grow their ranks. My pharmacist tells me that in the spirit of austerity, I can no longer get my prescription filled monthly. Rather the government says it must be filled weekly from now on. So the pharmacy has to absorb increased costs for compounding, billing, perhaps delivery, and billing the government. If, for example, one million prescriptions are

now filled weekly instead of bi-weekly or monthly, it is doubtful that the numbers of people processing these claims will be cut. Civil servants and the union do not want to see any austerity measures resulting in job losses so they have decreed this change to, in fact, increase their ranks and therefore increase overall costs. No doubt other departments are addressing the austerity edict in the same fashion. Austerity should begin with the government itself and should focus on, for instance, converting prescriptions from weekly to monthly and not the reverse. Bill Smyth Pincourt Dear Editor, As Chair of the Wyman Memorial United Church Outreach Committee, allow me to express our utmost gratitude to Your Local Journal journalist James Parry, the Hudson Community, the Boy Scouts and multiple teenagers as well as CJAD radio for making this Book Sale the best fund raiser we have ever experienced financially. Ste. Anne considering painting water tower now that major infrastructure projects are completed John Jantak Your Local Journal

With Ste. Anne de Bellevue’s major infrastructure projects completed, Mayor Paola Hawa said the town is now busy preparing its upcoming 2016 municipal budget which will look at other potential upgrades including the repainting of the city’s water tower, as she presented the mayor’s report on the status of the city’s finances during the Monday evening council meeting, November 9. For Hawa, the major projects that were undertaken by the city when she began her tenure as mayor in November 2013 were long overdue and an

the road from council to council to council until finally we said enough – it’s time to fix our infrastructure,” Hawa told Your Local Journal. “I’m very pleased about that. By the end of our mandate in two years, we’ll have redone every single road in the city if we keep going at this rate. “We said at the beginning of our term two years ago that no matter what, we will invest 20 per cent of the budget on our infrastructure,” Hawa added. “This has been a priority. Maintaining our infrastructure is a long-term goal and it’s what people pay for. If someone is going out and trips over a sidewalk because it’s broken or drives over a pothole in a road, that’s a problem.”

“We could obviously use the money for other things, but at some point in time we’ll have to do maintenance on that structure. Infrastructure may not be sexy but it’s a necessity.”

which would cost the city about $1 million. Another major impediment to the tower’s demolition is that it stands just a few feet away from several residential buildings. “Hopefully next year we’ll be able to work on the water tower,” said Hawa. “This is another thing that has been kicked down the road over and over again. It’ll cost around $300,000 to $400,000. We could obviously use the money for other things, but at some

point in time we’ll have to do maintenance on that structure. Infrastructure may not be sexy but it’s a necessity. “I have no problem in finally getting this done.” Hawa added. “It would be nice to do something funky with it but a simple paint job is all it needs to make it look good again. So by 2017 when we come to our next municipal election, we’ll have done everything that is absolutely required for the city.”

With major infrastructure projects completed, such as the upgrades made to the sewage and water systems along with new pavement and sidewalks on Garden City Road, Mayor Paola Hawa said the city will now focus on upgrading smaller streets repainting the town’s iconic water tower.

For residents who live along Spring Garden Road, the city’s two-year project to upgrade the areas’ sewage system, water pipes, roads and sidewalks is finally over and a final coat of asphalt will be applied to the revamped road surface next spring, said Hawa. The construction of a T-intersection and the reopening in early October of Exit 41 along Highway 40 west which reconnected northbound Boulevard des Anciens-Combattants to the northern section of the city is another example cited by Hawa as part of the commitment made during her election campaign that she would work resolve the situation. With major infrastructure projects out of the way, the city is now going to concentrate its infrastructure efforts on the city’s side streets and painting its tall, iconic concrete water tower at the corner of Brown Street and Montée Sainte-Marie. Hawa said repainting the structure which overlooks Highway 20 is a more cost-effective solution than proposals that have called for its demolition

The show’s intelligence test and screening process whittles several thousand people down to the 28 participants who appear on the show. “Every stage of that process I sort of expected that was as far as I would go,” Blais said. “I really didn’t

During the October 11 episode, Blais, a scientist and musician whose A Capella Science channel has made him a YouTube star, competed before a live audience against a high school teacher, a radio personality and a Toronto Argonauts cheerleader. Outgoing MP Jamie Nicholls reÁects on four years of politics in the region Carmen Marie Fabio editor@yourlocaljournal.ca

Following over four years of living in, and working with the residents of the Vaudreuil-Soulanges region, former NDP Member of Parliament Jamie Nicholls says he is most proud of the strong opposition his party put up against the Conservative Government. “We made positive propositions of how we could change things for the better. The fact that Stephen Harper’s government is gone is part of the work that I did with that opposition in showing Canadians just how wrong-headed most of the decisions they were making were.” Nicholls said he also takes pride in the work he did in the region with community organizations, including the Centre développement communautaire (CDC) by raising their public profile. “We also helped lots of people with family reunification and immigration cases,” he said. “I stand by the work I did during those four and a half years.” When asked if he had regrets, Nicholls laments that he was unable to engage more democratic involvement from the citizens, specifically over the omnibus budget bill that was passed in 2012 and its changes on environmental legislation but turnout from the public during an event to discuss the bill was lower than expected. Nicholls also acknowledged that some requests from citizens went unanswered, or unsatisfied with an answer, and said there’s always room to improve communications with constituents regardless of level of government. Nicholls divides his time between Gatineau and Hudson and as a resident, is paying close attention to developments in the pipeline projects that affect the Vaudreuil-Soulanges region. “We (NDP) said we would consider the pipeline if we had a proper environmental evaluation,” he said. “That’s what was gotten rid of in 2012 (by the Conservatives) and we still don’t have it in place.” Nicholls said that even if the project had met the conditions of the current federally legislated safety

After serving as Vaudreuil-Soulanges NDP Member of Parliament for the past four years, Hudson resident Jamie Nicholls is looking forward to new professional challenges but hasn’t ruled out an eventual return to politics.

regime, it wouldn’t be acceptable to the NDP. Those safety laws have been inherited by Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party and to change them would involve recalling parliament. “He needs the political will.” Nicholls said the Enbridge 9b flow reversal plan that would see diluted bitumen flowing through the 40-year-old pipeline thorough the Vaudrueil-Soulanges region should be subjected to a more thorough review than the Conservatives asked for. “I don’t think it’s acceptable for our member of parliament to say that it’s a binding decision when he has colleagues out west saying those decisions can be reviewed but ours can’t.” Nicholls is transitioning from his politics back to his private life, closing both his Ottawa and Vaudreuil-Soulange offices. “I have a couple of offers that have come in that I’m considering,” said Nicholls, describing potential work at the management level in academia. “As I said the night of our defeat, I’m not going anywhere. I’m going to still be around, promoting our education system and public healthcare system.”

Nicholls has been active on social media since the October 19 election that saw, much like the rest of Canada, a red Liberal wave roll through the region, electing Hudson native Peter Schiefke as the Vaudreuil-Soulanges MP. He told Your Local Journal that despite the election results, public health and wellbeing remains his personal and professional focus. “I recently posted that doctors and nurses have come out and said the Chaoulli Decision made in 2005 is ruining our public Medicare system,” he said of the Supreme Court ruling in which four of the seven judges concluded the Quebec Charter guarantees a right to private insurance where the public system is inadequate. “The same year, Jack Layton had made his support of Paul Martin’s government contingent on the fact that Martin expressed that private care was not acceptable under the rubric of public financing. That was one of the things

that tipped the Liberal government over and brought us Stephen Harper.” Nicholls reiterated the need for adequate medical services in VaudreuilSoulanges. “Obviously we need a hospital. Residents are going to Ontario and funding hospital expansions with our tax dollars. It’s not right.” He also remains passionate about issues like area housing and public transit, including Conseil Intermunicipal de Transport La Presqu’Île (CIT) and the Train de l’Ouest project. While he says he hasn’t ruled out another run at politics, “…four years is a long time,” but is emphatic that if he does return, his loyalties remain with the NDP. For now, Nicholls is making the most of this time off to spend with wife Amanda MacDonald and new baby Penelope. “It’s good to be back spending time with my family.”

THE SOAPBOX CARMEN MARIE FABIO

Feeling lucky This week welcomes the third Friday the 13th of 2015, the most that can occur in a one year period, and although I like to think I’m not particularly superstitious, my overactive imagination has always observed that something of great importance always seems to happen on that date – case in point, the birth of my first son. The fact that it was also a full-moon just added to the awesomeness of it all. As I drove home from the office recently peering through the windshield that bears a large crack courtesy of an encounter with a flying rock over three years ago on a Friday the 13th in January, my eye also caught the dangling St. Christopher medal that hangs from my rear view mirror as I pondered the differences between superstition and religious faith. Despite the fact that I’m not a practicing Catholic, I once had an epiphany on an airplane involving St. Christopher and a cigarette. I had just quit smoking and was fidgeting in my rear aisle seat, waiting on the tarmac at the Dallas/Fort Worth airport. I’m not a good flyer at the best of times but this particular flight was delayed, and after two weeks with a difficult customer at a nuclear plant out in the middle of Nowhere, Texas, I was aching to get home and see my family. The flight attendant’s assurances that everything would be “just fahnnn” did little to assuage my fears. My tension was exacerbated, along with my need for a cigarette, as the attendants were trying to entice passengers to give up their seats on the overbooked flight, repeatedly upping the ante by offering travel vouchers. While I began my usual mental preparation and self-calming measures that precede my every flight experience, I remembered from my childhood how my mom, a good Catholic, would make a deal with one of the saints whenever she needed something. I knew from an early age that St. Christopher was the patron saint of travellers, St. Anthony took care of lost objects, and St. Jude, being the patron saint of desperate and hopeless causes, was the one you turned to when all else failed. I have vivid memories of my mother looking for something in the house and invoking St. Anthony’s intervention. “C’mon Tony,” she’d say. “I could use a little help here.” It was with this memory in mind that I started making deals with St. Christopher, asking him to get me home safely on this flight that was now already an hour behind schedule. “C’mon Chris,” I said in my head, chewing a fingernail and sweating profusely. “Get me home okay and I’ll never smoke another cigarette.” After the overbooking dust had settled, the plane finally took off and I was able to de-stress enough to eat, and actually enjoy, the inflight meal and strike up a conversation with the gentleman sitting next to me who was headed to Montreal for a business meeting. Of course the flight was “just fahnnn” and we landed without incident at Trudeau International Airport on that fine October evening over a decade ago. As the plane taxied to the gate, I mentally chastised myself for engaging in a silly and superstitious pact with such a nebulous concept as patron saints. I gathered up my belongings and turned to my seatmate, wishing him a pleasant stay in Montreal. “It was nice talking to you,” I said, extending my hand. “By the way, my name is Carmen.” I felt the blood drain out of my face as he held out his hand in turn, saying, “I’m Chris.” I haven’t smoked a cigarette since. Mayor reports Ànancial surplus for Town of Rigaud James Armstrong Your Local Journal

Mayor Hans Gruenwald Jr. gave his annual report on the financial situation at the Monday November 9 regular town council meeting. Reporting a surplus of $1,680,634 and a total net debt load of $9,941,077 including financing costs, the report also includes details on the salaries paid to the mayor and councillors as well as the amounts paid for contracts over $25,000 to various companies for purchases of equipment and services. The town also purchased parts of several lots in the center of Rigaud for the construction of a new town hall as well as the parcel of land purchased from the town by the Municipalité Régionale de Comté de Vaudreuil-Soulanges for the construction of the Écocentre. A calendar of town council meeting dates for 2016 was proposed and passed beginning with Monday, January 11, 2016. Deputy Mayors were also nominated for the period from October 29, 2015, to November 9, 2017. Council passed a Notice of Motion for tax rates and tariffs for municipal services for the 2016 financial year. The mayor reported that the assessment roll has been re-evaluated. When queried as to whether or not property taxes will go up, he replied it would depend upon the budget for the coming year. Director General Chantal Lemieux pointed out that various sectors of the town have different tax rates dependent upon the services they receive from the municipality. She noted that property owners have until May 1 of the taxation year to contest the evaluation of their property. The reported purchase of a new

stove and accompanying exhaust system for the new fire hall drew some criticism from those in attendance during the second question period. At issue was the removal of the kitchen stove from the Salle d’Amité in Édifice Paul Brasseur due to safety concerns. The critics pointed out that it served approximately 250 senior citizens as compared to 35 fire fighters. “Here in Riguad, we conform to and respect the rules,” said Gruenwald, explaining that provincial safety regulations for public installations are considerably different from those regulating private installations. In other business, council granted $4000 to the Fondation des Centres d’hébergement Soulanges for their 2015 financial campaign for the purchase of essential safety equipment. Contracts were renewed for 2016 with Kelly Sani-Vac Inc. for diverse infrastructure maintenance, Entreprise d’Électricité de Rigaud Inc. for electrical work and Biolab Inc. for laboratory analysis of potable water. With the recommendations of the Comité Consultatif d’Urbanisme (CCU), council authorized the call for proposals for the sale and development of 71 and 73 rue Saint-Pierre for an integrated residential project. A replacement sign for 168 was also approved as were the plans to enlarge the main building of Microbrasserie Le Castor at 65-67 chemin des Vinaigriers. Council also officially congratulated Camping Choisy for winning the Camping Québec Award for Excellence for 2015. The organizers of the 20th Anniversary celebration for the Repas Partagés de Rigaud were also commended for their work.

Damage from rolling vehicle repaired on Ridge

Crossing into retirement

A little under two weeks after an empty car parked on Hudson’s Melrose Street rolled into the guardrail on Ridge Street near the corner of Cameron Street, the barrier was fixed the morning of November 11. “It was discovered by an off-duty fireman driving home along Ridge,” said Hudson Assistant Director of Public Services Paul Boudreau. “He called to let me know and also called 911.” Boudreau said because the car was empty, police were called. “She was visiting a friend,” he said of the car’s owner. “She didn’t know her car had rolled away.” It’s not yet known what caused the car to roll from its parking spot. “The contractor was called immediately after the accident but wasn’t available right away to make the necessary repairs,” said Boudreau. “It was supposed to be fixed the end of November but I told him this area is dangerous and it needed to be fixed right away.” Boudreau said the bill for the costs of the repair made by the specialized contractor will be forwarded to the woman’s insurance company.

On October 16, 2015, Mme Claudette Dumas worked her last day as a crossing guard, after 38 fruitful years of service to the community. She began working in the Ville d’Anjou sector of the city before transferring to Kirkland where she served as a crossing guard for École primaire Émile-Nelligan. Kirkland Mayor Michel Gibson was present at Station 1 (PDQ01) to thank her for protecting our children. We, here at the SPVM, would like to thank Mme Dumas for her excellent service.

Local Afghanistan veterans lay wreath at The Cenotaph in Hudson on Remembrance Day In salute to all those who served past and present James Parry Your Local Journal

They came. They saw. And they remembered. Just three days after the peoplepacked and solemnity of Hudson’s Remembrance Day Parade along Main Road on Sunday, November 8 - the only one of its kind in Vaudreuil-Sou-

langes - 10 local veterans of the war in Afghanistan who safely returned home to our region said unanimously yesterday, November 11, that they were honoured to lay a wreath at The Cenotaph in Hudson as a salute to their comrades and to all veterans of previous wars and conflicts. Under a cloudless clear blue sky and holding a Canadian Armed Forces hel-

met as worn in combat in Afghanistan studded with 151 poppies - the exact number of Canadians as of November 11, 2015 who have died to date in that ongoing war - they joined representatives of Hudson Legion Branch #115 in what was a very emotional moment for them all. They told me their names. Their ranks. Their units. Where they served

and when. But asked that they did not want to be singled out in this report. In the respected veteran tradition, a true band of brothers and sisters.

must say what an absolute joy it was to partake - as a member of the audience that is - in the musical feast for the ears staged at St. James’ Anglican Church Hall on Saturday, November 7, when local musicians and singers raised over $2,000 for Le Pont/Bridging Food Bank here in Hudson in a concert titled That All May Be Fed, an initiative of James Armstrong, musical director for the Anglican Parish of Vaudreuil and also an award-winning fellow scribe here at YLJ. (See story on page 12). Donating their time and talent to this most worthwhile cause were the St. James’ Anglican Church Choir under the direction of James, the Greenwood Singers - directed by Judi Meade and well known for their wonderful concerts in support of the Greenwood Center for Living History and St. Mary’s Church, the supremely talented soprano Carolina Pla who was fighting a bad cold incidentally although you would never have known it, bass John Manning, and tenor David Langlois. Also vocalist-pianist extraordinaire Vivianne LaRivière - founder and director of The Songroom (www.the songroom.ca) and friends, as well as Bill Riley and his trio - Sweet ‘n’ Sassy - for the evening comprising singer Katie Ditchun and Bob Hardy on clarinet. Kudos also to Marc Lanthier, who donated a piano tuning and helped James hit the right note, and to Coral & Nigel Holehouse for coordinating refreshments during the intermission. And of course to Carol Laws, founder of the food bank for her dedication and hard work that provides much needed help year round in this immediate community and surrounding area. All adding up to a truly a magical evening in the true community spirit that is synonymous with Hudson when it comes to helping those less fortunate and in need, for whatever reason, in our little hamlet by the lake! Musical feast for the ears raises over $2000 for Le Pont/Bridging Food Bank “Wow, what an evening,” says founder Carol Laws James Parry Your Local Journal

It was a concert billed as That All May Be Fed, a musical feast for the ears, Saturday November 7, at St. James’ Anglican Church Hall in Hudson. And, as always, for local families or individuals

relying, on Hudson’s Le Pont/Bridging Food Bank there will certainly be no bill attached to whatever support they may receive in the weeks and months to come to help them through their time of need. Thanks to the generosity and concern of countless individuals in our community, including James

Armstrong, Director of Music for the Anglican Parish of Vaudreuil, who organized and orchestrated the fundraising concert that showcased musicians and singers from throughout the region. All donating their time and talent in an evening to be remembered while raising over $2000 for the food bank founded by Carol Laws and supported on an ongoing basis by equally dedicated volunteers. Said Armstrong, “It all came together in about six weeks. Having met Carol on a one-to-one basis recently, I was so impressed with what she has been

doing over the years and her dedication to helping others. I just couldn’t stand the fact that here in Canada, let alone Hudson, young people are going to school without breakfast and with very little food at home. And that their families, through no fault of their own, are suffering and just trying to make ends meet on a day-to-day basis. It just doesn’t seem right. And so I put out the call to my friends who are singers and musicians, asking if they wanted to be part of the concert, and their response was immediate. Continued on page 20

Options explored for dealing with West Island stray cat population Jules-Pierre Malartre Special contributor

A number of cat rescue advocates attended the November 2 PierrefondsRoxboro borough meeting to discuss the plight of abandoned cats and to convince the borough to avail itself of humane methods of dealing with strays rather than using for-profit animal control services with a high kill ratio. Councillor Yves Gignac fielded questions from attending animal advocates. According to Gignac’s source, TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) of 75 per cent of stray cats is required to control overpopulation. He cited a figure of 20,000 stray cats in the West Island, while the estimate supplied by local TNR advocate Amélie-Maude Lemire puts that number at only 10,000 in the immediate borough. Gignac said it would cost the borough $1.5 million to sterilize 75 per cent of those 20,000 cats (at a cost of $100 per cat). Gignac also addressed the issue of euthanasia, “This administration will not euthanize cats, and will not award contracts to do that. It won’t happen on my watch. Guaranteed. “We believe a TNR program, accompanied by an awareness and education program aimed toward pet owners to increase sterilization and reduce abandonment, is the only efficient and humane solution to the proliferation of stray cats,” said Claudia Mendoza of

Bien-être animal Montréal (BEAM). The province of Quebec is notorious for lagging behind in adopting humane solutions to animal abandonment, although an increasing number of municipalities have enacted new by-laws that provide animals with better protection. The introduction of Bill 54 also aims to improve animal conditions at the provincial level. A number of municipalities deal with humane organizations, such as the SPCA, to help control and rehome stray cats instead of resorting to mass euthanasia. Montreal SPCA’s Anita Kapuscinska maintains a TNRM program (TNR supplemented with a ‘Maintain’ element, where feral cats are also provided with some limited food and shelter) is the most viable and humane way of treating feral felines. She feels that municipalities working with the SPCA have become increasingly proactive in the eight years she’s worked there. The SPCA does not have the capacity to support all boroughs on its territory, however. While some feel that nonprofit organizations can not compete with for-profit pounds for municipal animal control contracts (pounds are cheaper because they do not provide veterinary and long-term care for the animals they capture, according to Rémi Brazeau of the West Island SPCA), Kapuscinska said it’s important for municipalities to realize that costs of dealing with non-profits organizations who rehome and TNR strays

will decrease over the long term. TNR programs have proven highly effective in controlling overpopulation in a number of areas. “Vermont now has a waiting list for adopting cats,” Lemire said. Animal control services have not eliminated - or reduced - the problem, since overpopulation of stray animals has only increased. The source cause of this issue is not the animals, but the general attitude of residents toward their pets. A percentage of Quebecers still tend to think of their pets as disposable goods. While some people do bring their unwanted pets to a shelter or pound, a number of owners simply abandon their pets. The problem is exacerbated by residents who do not have their pets sterilized. Animal rescue organizations spearhead TNR/TNRM programs, whereby stray cats that cannot be rehomed are caught, neutered and then released to live out their lives as community cats in our localities. A number of residents have taken upon themselves to care for those animals, providing them with food and outdoor shelter. While an increasing number of municipali-

ties have responded agreeably to TNR and community cat colony initiatives, a number still prefer to resort to outdated animal control services. “Most people have no idea this program is in place. I would not be aware of its existence was I not involved in cat rescue,” said Dr. Ursula Lord, founder of Cause 4 Paws, an animal rescue organisation active in the area, referring to the Dollard des Ormeaux TNR program. “This program is being tragically underused.” Lord suggests this program could be expanded for use in Pierrefonds-Roxboro. Over the past three years, Steri-Animal and BEAM have helped sterilize hundreds of cats in the West-Island area, thanks to the cooperation of Animal 911 Veterinary Hospital that offers reduced rates to rescue groups and residents. You can find out more about humane solutions to animal abandonment and adopting abandoned cats by visiting Steri-Animal’s website (steri-animal.org) and Cause 4 Paws’ website (cause4pawsrescue.ca). Île Perrot Patriots moving onto provincials Carmen Marie Fabio editor@yourlocaljournal.ca

For a nail-biting moment last Sunday morning, November 8, it looked like the St. Lazare Stallions pee-wee football team was poised to come from behind to take the win on the field at École Chêne-Bleu high school in Pincourt as the score inched ever closer at 34 to the Île Perrot Patriots’ 36 points but in the end, the Patriots held their ground, winning the game and moving on to the provincial level. “We were both fighting for the silver

league cup,” said St. Lazare Stallions President and pee-wee Coach Anson Williams of the coveted ‘Coupe des Alouettes’ in the Montreal Regional Football League (MRFL). Williams said the Stallions, comprised of 12 and 13 year olds, were disappointed with their loss but rallied after the game. “We were down 21 points at the half, and came within two points (of the Patriots).” A Stallions’ fumble set off a series of plays that saw the Patriots widen the scoring gap, culminating with a final score of 49 to 34. “We had the game under control at

CHRISTMAS BAZAAR Sunday,

halftime but let it slip a bit in the second half,” said Patriots’ Head Coach Scott MacNab. “We squandered a pretty big lead but managed to hang on.” McNab credits the team’s defense for turning the game around, particularly Dylan Currotte, number 14, who he described as outstanding on defense in the second half and, Eric Cumberbatch, number 72, for scoring two touchdowns to spearhead the offense. “They’re kids but some of them play like adults,” he said. “Cumberbatch can run the 40-yard sprint in 4.9 seconds. And quarterback Kyle Bouchard can throw a football 40 yards.” Both coaches commended all the players in the leagues for their efforts in the season so far. “Our bantam team won their

Coupe des Alouttes Saturday,” said Williams of the 14 and 15 year old players who, under Coach Eric Dugas, beat the Drumondville Vandoos 41 to 7. The Patriots mosquitoes 10 and 11 year olds played Saturday, November 7, against the Sun Youth team in Parc Jeanne-Mance and also won their game, going to the finals. The Patriots’ next game puts them up against the La Prairie Diables and will take place this Sunday, November 15, 4 p.m. at Percival Molson Stadium in Montreal. A play-by-play of the game will be called and, just like the major leagues, playbacks will be broadcast on the big screen. Is your family not as close as you think it should be? I’ll let you in on a little secret: you’re not alone. Many families house some sort of concealed conflict. Typically, they think this sets them apart in a bad way. It’s a bit too embarrassing to talk about, so everyone thinks it’s rare. Welcome to the human race. You can stop feeling embarrassed because it’s quite natural. Think about it: wherever you place your greatest expectations, that’s exactly where you risk the greatest disappointments. The problem doesn’t stem from family itself. From the very moment of birth we’re ripped from the nurturing security of the womb and begin our lifelong craving for a safe place, somewhere to belong. We expect family to provide this — who else? — but as long as we operate from this protective shell, we’re going to butt heads with other family members. Conflict’s inevitable. Makes sense, doesn’t it? And yet it’s hard to swallow this view of ourselves: insecure, childish, longing. It sticks in the craw. Besides, it makes little difference how we justify our stubborn craving for perfect family. It’s an emotional drive, not a logical argument. Just to complicate matters, there’s

an added ‘why can’t’ factor. For example, the rest of us all get along, why can’t John? Fact is, everyone else gets along best when they all agree that John’s a pain. You might say they need him to be a pain. Could be they actually goad him into it? Perhaps you suspect it but don’t know how to say so. All of a sudden, you might become the bad guy! The family dynamic is above any one member. At times it feels like the will of God, beyond the reach of ordinary mortals. However, when just one person steps outside the box, the balance shifts. Of course, you never know quite how that shift plays out until you do it. It means sticking your neck out. It’s an emotional affair. Once you see that the status quo is a secretive, unresolved, largely unacknowledged dysfunction, it’s hard to keep it in. And yet it’s dangerous to stick your neck out. The thing is to be prepared for blowback, and to have a support system in place to remind you that you’re entitled to speak up. More than that, you’re courageous. When you’re ready to do it you deserve the best possible chance of success. Besides, you just want to stick it out, not get it chopped off. Stephen Schettini begins a new 5-evening mindfulness workshop ‘Breaking Through Guilt, Shame and Other Family Traditions’ in Hudson, beginning Tuesday November 24th. For our special bonus offer visit www. thenakedmonk.com or call Caroline at 450-853-0616 for details.

going to the food bank. Some of whom told me that, even though they could not be there that evening, they would like to give them to friends who could.” Said Carol Laws, “Wow, what an evening. Such talent on the part of so many people who believe in what we are doing at the food bank. And I would like to extend a very sincere thank you to them all.”

Legion News The next Friday night dinner is this week, November 13 with Gord Montgomery and his pals dishing up a great Caesar Chicken dinner. Reservations are a must at (450) 458-4882. Dinner begins at 6:30 p.m. The next General Meeting will be held Wednesday, November 18 at 7 p.m. sharp. Cribbage night will be Friday, November 20, at 7:30 p.m. Lots of fun with some nice prizes. This will be followed by the monthly Pub Quiz (trivia) Wednesday, November 25 at 8 p.m. All monies raised from that go to a very worthy local charity. The curling Grand Match will be held Saturday, November 21, and this always proves to be great fun with numerous curlers playing here and the other half playing at outside clubs, all vying for the

massive Grand Match trophy which the Hudson Legion Curling Club has won several times. A special thank you goes out to all those who participated in the annual Remembrance Day parade last weekend. Close to 200 hundred people were in attendance under a beautiful sunny sky Sunday, November 8, to partake in the ceremonies at the town cenotaph. The night before there were over 125 people attending the annual Remembrance dinner and they all listened intently to the guest speaker, Lorraine d’Artois, speak about the undercover espionage actions of her parents Guy and Sonya d’Artois during World War II as members of the S.O.E. (Special Operations Executive). Lest we Forget.

Home and Estate Place du parc, an inspired living space Located West of Montreal, the City of Saint-Lazare attracts young families because it offers the tranquility of country living with access to services found in urban centres. As with many municipalities in

the city will prioritize vibrant living spaces in a setting that favors active commuting. At Habitations Robert, we welcome this decision with enthusiasm since our new project Place du parc seeks precisely to cater to the preferences of new buyers who increasingly wish to settle down in a safe neighbourhood with well thought-out urban plans. A planned environment A sustainable living space combines mixed residences at the centre of

Quebec, Saint-Lazare encourages responsible residential development. More and more, urban planning seeks to create sustainable living environments. In fact, Saint-Lazare Mayor Robert Grimaudo has confirmed that

an active environment which is close to the most frequently sought services. The Place du parc project distinguishes itself with the superior quality of its homes, which range in styles and surface areas (for a reasonably competitive price), all in a neighbourhood that has been carefully planned. Imagine a neighbourhood interspersed with parks, wooded areas and green spaces that are connected by a network of sidewalks and bike paths. Comfort and quality at the core In a blog by Collectivités Viables, the organization reminds us that quality urban planning encourages active transportation by ensuring users feel safe, comfortable and happy. Beyond the quality of the constructions, new buyers look for neighbourhoods with style, where large sidewalks line residences, where urban fixtures provide spaces to rest and relax and where safe green spaces encourage free play. Who will be fortunate enough? We are confident that our new project will please the new generation of buyers. We propose an eco-neighbourhood that embodies the characteristics of a living environment with strong pedestrian potential. Come discover what Place du parc has to offer. Gold medals for West YLJ around the world Islanders in Argentina

Rigaud residents Helen Hodgson (left) and Linda Kemerer in Zihuatanejo, visited Mexico this year and took some time out with Your Local Journal. High on a hill near where they stayed, Helen says the walk down to the town gave them exercise every day. The town follows the bay in the background. It was a very hot descent and an even hotter climb back to the hotel. PHOTO BY MARC LABELLE
