Hudsonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Maxine Bredt celebrating 100 years of an action-ďŹ lled life _ ) The Journal
Although it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t quite the day of her birthday, Maxine Bredt cheerfully played along with the cake and candles provided for a photo op by The Journal on Monday, September 16. Her actual birth date is September 21, a Saturday, to mark her
â&#x20AC;&#x153;I tell everyone I brought in the autumn,â&#x20AC;? she said with a laugh. Born in Highwood, Montana, her family name was Llewellyn. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a Welsh name with 5 ] ! ^ was three, her family had moved to Ter ^ = Â&#x2020;Z wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t afraid of the bears because I had a dog although I found out later, it wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have been much help,â&#x20AC;? she said of her new home. Life wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t easy for her family and _ 5 5 as she grew up proved to be a challenge. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It cost $45 to register for the nursesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; training course,â&#x20AC;? said Bredt. To achieve her goal, she found a job as a waitress ^ = \ trained at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Â&#x2019; ^ = Â&#x2020;Z 5 ~ Z wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t afraid of the bed pans,â&#x20AC;? she said.
! Bredt served as a nursing sister with the 14th = Â&#x152; Montreal during World War II. She was } Z 5 There were 234 beds in the surgical ward located in the hospital that had previously been a convent, according to Bredt. Remembering events from that period isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t ^ : but one anecdote came to mind. â&#x20AC;&#x153;One of the senior nurses received a parcel from home,â&#x20AC;? she chuckled. â&#x20AC;&#x153;She opened it in the ward and held up the girdle. She said, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Fellas, look what Miss Llewellyn got!â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;? The response from the bedridden men was instantaneous with

â&#x20AC;&#x153;I loved to dance,â&#x20AC;? she noted. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t sing but I could dance.â&#x20AC;? That said, she wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t sure if she would be doing any dancing to celebrate her birthday although she didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t deny the possibility. With more than week of tributes and

Mighty Victory at Special Olympics Quebec Championships Nick Zacharias The Journal
This past Saturday, with a swell of pride, the Mighty Hawks of VaudreuilSoulanges won Gold at the Special Olympics Quebec provincial soccer championships in the D2 division. Played in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, the tournament saw the Mighty Hawks dominate in an undefeated run against teams from all across the province â&#x20AC;&#x201C; an impressive performance for a team formed just two years ago. Coach James Maurais, a father of three kids with special needs (two 5 Â&#x2022; _ proached the Saint-Lazare-Hudson
= Â&#x192; cial Olympics Quebec and formed the team in order to establish more 5 : in the region. The response has been great. â&#x20AC;&#x153;D2 is the lowest division, but these kids worked hard and really came out winners,â&#x20AC;? said Maurais, Â&#x2020; ` A1.â&#x20AC;? Their performance means the team will move up to D1 next year,
and that comes with a shot at qualify 5 { Â&#x160; Championships. \ ; Â&#x152; : doors at Brazeau Park (in Saint-Lazare) in the summer and in the gym at Birchwood Elementary School in the winter, and they welcome neurodiverse boys and girls ranging from Â&#x2026; | Syndrome to ADHD. Â&#x2020;Â&#x201A; 5 ` : who all come together to play as a team with tons of spirit,â&#x20AC;? said Maurais. Serges is survived by his wife, Barbara Robinson, stepdaughter, Gillian Florence (Aaron Graham), stepson David Florence, grandchildren Hunter and Jamie. Predeceased by his parents, Leon BĂŠrubĂŠ and Gabrielle Arbour. Mourning his loss are his siblings, Danielle Simard (Paulo), Pierre (Francoise) and France BĂŠrubĂŠ as well as nieces and nephews Nathalie (Luc), RenĂŠ-Pierre (AmĂŠlie), Jessica (Jean), Phylippe (Isabelle), Ă&#x2030;ric (Malika) and Manon (Matthieu). Serges was a long-time member of the Hudson Legion and Curling Club, he was especially known for his dedication as the caretaker of the curling rinks for many years. Barbara would like to sincerely thank Dr. Len Welik and Melanie Dufour (from CLSC) as well as the wonderful Hudson NOVA nurses and caregivers.
