In Memoriam

LĂŠoda Daoust Mallette 1921-2018 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of LĂŠoda Daoust Mallette on Wednesday, August 29, 2018 at the age of 96 years and 10 months. Predeceased by her husband AurĂŠlien Mallette, her son Robert and her daughter Micheline, she leaves to mourn her children Donald (late Claudine), Michel (Anne-Marie), Carolle (Paul) and Linda (Bernard), her 9 grandchildren, her 12 great-grandchildren as well as nieces, nephews and friends. Donations in her memory can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Shelagh Mary Gilmore (Nee Rowlette) Jan. 23, 1930 – Aug. 21, 2018 Peacefully, at home, after a wonderful life. Devoted wife of Bob, who predeceased her March 29, 2006. Loving mother of Kathy (Bob), Cody (Steve), Robin (Chris), and Jennifer (Don). Adored Nana of Cameron, Matthew, Jonathan, Geoffrey, Gillian and Abigail. Shelagh was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba to Archie and Alice Rowlette and was the younger sister of Kay (Mike, Jeff, Alison and Ted). Shelagh made many dear friends in her youth, some of whom are still here to mourn her. A graduate of the University of Manitoba, she was a career woman until she met Bob and became an amazing wife and Mum. Bob and Shelagh moved many times with their growing family and made enduring friendships with each move. Their first home was in Winnipeg, followed by Vancouver, Beaconsfield, Hudson, Clarkson, Oakville and then back to Hudson, all within 15 years. They then moved to Calgary and later to North Oaks Minnesota. Shelagh made a loving home at every town or city where Bob’s career primarily with Canadian Pacific Railway took them, and they were blessed to retire in Hudson. Shelagh and Bob loved to travel and had many wonderful cruises and trips to Ireland, along with visits to the kids in California and Virginia Beach. Shelagh was a tireless volunteer, loved singing with St. James’ Church Choir and attended the AristoFit and AristoFit II exercise class every weekday morning in St. James’ Church Hall until a few years ago. She enjoyed bridge, crosswords and reading. She was a lovely lady, an amazing cook, a gracious hostess and a ukulele player par excellence who was known to lead many a sing-song at their many parties. Shelagh was an extraordinary person, entirely dedicated to her family and friends. A Memorial Service will be held at St. James’ Church, 642 Main Road, Hudson Saturday, at 11:00 AM on October 13th followed by a reception in St. James’ Church Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations to NOVA Hudson, (202-465 Main Road, Hudson, QC J0P 1H0 or http://www.novahudson.com/Donations.htm) or St. James’ Church, 642 Main Road, Hudson, QC J0P 1H0 or https://www.canadahelps. org/en/charities/869999441RR0001-st-james-church would be greatly appreciated. To the NOVA Nurses, Judy, Wanda, Betty and Brenda who cared for Shelagh during her last months at home and Dr. Ron Hryniowski who cared for her in his office and at her home, the family expresses its sincere gratitude and thanks. She will be loved and missed forever. Thursday, September 6, 2018

The Weekend Gardener Through the garden gate

Terry O’Shaughnessy Special Contributor

For me, there’s nothing like a garden door. Not a fan of wide open green lawns, I prefer paths. Rather than seeing a whole garden at once, I prefer to explore it and nothing can create this sense of discovery ) I # For my taste, this would preferably be a wooden gate with a latch and some carved lintels maybe. But if like me your garden budget is only a bit more than what you can scrounge from beneath ! # This summer I concocted a do-it-yourself garden door at the side of my house that leads to my backyard. And if I do say so myself, it didn’t turn out too badly. First, I bought two free-standing trel , ! R ² > ! ) . them about a yard apart in the entry.

V either side, so a quick trip to the Dollar Store for low edging was also in order. Then to ‘close’ the middle area, I need plain edging, so I toured the dollar stores )

match. K 9 # M Z got going, it became a thing of beauty. It always amazes me how you can count on your garden to take care of a lot of things for you if you give it a chance. For example, the tamarisk tree that stood on one side of the entry has had a few problems over the years. But with the support of the new trellis, it has done

) Z pink mallow and dianthus. A pot of mandevilla vine (more commonly known as 4 . the trellis, and my next door neighbour’s grape vines have discovered it as well. On the other side of the new entry, a healthy vine of old royal blue morning glories has taken on the job of implying that the loveliest secret garden must lay beyond the door, while some scented pink verbena has also chipped in, creat-

ing colour and interest. I I only looks all right, it has become an impossible gate for my small white dog to escape through. Though he lolls lazily on pillows on top of cushions on top of furniture when indoors, once he gets outdoors, he transforms into an accom @ by my neighbour for his ability to overcome any obstacle.
