Publisher’s Note Thank you for taking time to enjoy this issue of Bethel Living Magazine. Winter ushers in the holidays and long dark nights made for sipping hot cocoa around the fire — times to relax and enjoy family. The deepening chill brings the return of skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobile riding and skating — activities that warm our souls. There are new things to see and do around the area. Be sure to check out Joey Kramer’s glow-in-the-dark drum kit from Aerosmith’s recent Global Warming Tour at the all New Rockin’ & Roastin’ Restaurant & Cafe! At the end of a hard day on the slopes go bake those tired muscles in an old-world sauna at the newly refurbished Riverside Lodge, then grab a delicious artisanal pizza and a cold fresh beer while you are there. This Winter Issue’s beautiful cover shot is by Jonathan Zdziarski, a local hacker and forensic scientist who enjoys photography in his spare time. He will be exhibiting a gallery at The Mill Hill Inn during December. FMI jonathan@zdziarski.com I’m so grateful to my production team, my contributors and my advertisers. CAFÉ & RESTAURANT at the
J
Mountain
oey Kramer, Aerosmith’s drumming legend, announces that he will open the Rockin’ & Roastin’ Café & Restaurant – At the Mountain in Newry, ME, with business executive, Les Otten, former vice chairman of the Boston Red Sox who is credited in large part with saving Fenway Park. Slated to open in December of 2015, the Rockin’ & Roastin’ Café & Restaurant will be housed in the current Phoenix House & Well space and will feature a coffeehouse and dining room with unparalleled views of Sunday River Mountain. The namesake is a nod to Kramer’s 100% organic certified coffee company, Rockin’ & Roastin’. “Les Otten is a legend in skiing, and I couldn’t be more amped to partner up with him in this venture,” said Joey Kramer, chairman & founder of Rockin’ & Roastin’. “When I started Rockin’ & Roastin’ in 2012, I always hoped it would lead to opportunities in the restaurant industry and this one is a dream.” Said Les Otten, “I’m very much looking forward to this partnership with Joey, and his Rockin’ & Roastin’ team. Since I graduated college, the Bethel and Sunday River areas have been such a huge part of my life and I’m thrilled about this new and exciting project.” The exterior of the building will be reskinned, and the interior will undergo a total revamp fit for rock royalty. Among the unique memorabilia on display will be Kramer’s drum kit from the recent Aerosmith “Global Warming Tour” – a hand painted, glow-in-thedark ensemble – making it a one-of-a-kind piece of rock history. Among other renovations, the Rockin’ & Roastin’ Café & Restaurant will extend its prow front to the edge of the property with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the majestic mountains and with the addition of a unique built-in bar that boasts unobstructed views of the Sunday River Resort. The venue also will feature two other bars, live music and it will be open yearround. Downstairs, there will be a casual café concept where baristas will prepare a variety of coffee drinks using the traditional Rockin’ 6

& Roastin’ brews (Guatemala, Ethiopia, Sumatra), a signature espresso, an all-natural Swiss water-based decaffeinated version, organic flavored coffees and cappuccinos. For those looking to snack, it will offer fresh baked goods including coffee cakes, Danishes, pastries and muffins that are baked in-house as well as gourmet sandwiches. The menu items will be named with fun twists on Aerosmith hits such as “Janie’s Got a Bun” and “Livin’ on a Wedge.” Upstairs, there will be a full-service dining room that will dish out fare fit for the whole family such as a series of steaks, seafood and other approachable, classic preparations. “Our goal is to provide a dynamic ‘must see’ family-friendly venue with great food, great music and great views,” said Frank Cimler and Ron Mann, co-founders of Rockin’ & Roastin’. “We feel this will be a fantastic addition to the region, and hope to bring forth an unforgettable experience for residents and tourists alike.” The Rockin’ & Roastin’ Café & Restaurant – At the Mountain currently is accepting applications for all restaurant positions, including internships. Resumes may be submitted through comments@rockinandroastin.com. The Rockin’ & Roastin’ Café & Restaurant – At the Mountain will be located at 9 Timberline Drive in Newry, ME. ABOUT ROCKIN’ & ROASTIN’: Joey Kramer of Aerosmith is a coffee-loving Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Famer. The story of Joey Kramer’s Rockin’ & Roastin’ 100% USDA organic certified, custom-roasted coffee brews begins in the field. Unlike “sun grown” coffee that’s cheaper to produce but requires chemical fertilizers and pesticides and leads to the destruction of native rainforests, Rockin’ & Roastin’ coffee is lovingly cultivated using the traditional “shade grown” method, under a canopy of indigenous trees, that leads to Arabica beans. This sustainable practice supports a wide diversity of plant and

animal life, provides food and shelter to migrating birds, and helps to filter carbon dioxide from the air, reducing the danger of global warming. There currently is a trio of international blends offered: a medium roast from Guatemala; a medium-dark roast from Ethiopia; and, a dark roast hailing from Sumatra. Rockin’
& Roastin’ also is the official hot brewed coffee at House of Blues locations throughout the nation. For more information, please visit: www.rockinandroastin.com. Follow Rockin’ & Roastin’ on Facebook and Twitter.

In Finland, where winter temperatures routinely dive below freezing, a sauna (a small wooden room heated to around 200 F) is an integral part of life — on average there is one for every household in the country. Finns cite stress relief, muscle relaxation, detoxing of skin and internal organs, deeper sleep, improved cardiovascular performance and a strengthened immune system among the many benefits of sauna. In Maine we experience similar cold temperatures but finding a good sauna takes some hunting. BL went looking and wound up talking to Jennifer McMahon, owner of the Riverside Lodge & Sauna in Paris. BL: How did you get into the sauna business? JM: I started frequenting Dave’s Sauna several years ago and quickly noticed that my skin felt amazing and I slept really well afterward. About a year ago, with the encouragement of my kids — Nettie, Joseph, Jack and Hannah — I bought Dave’s and quickly began operation with a small pub and restaurant and four sauna rooms. The entire building has been refurbished to make a cheery open place for people to enjoy the sauna experience.
BL: Your website lists some other services that you provide on-site. JM: Yes, both Hannah and I are licensed massage therapists so we can offer couples or single massage. We are planning on expanding the offerings in our Movement Studio to include yoga classes for relaxation and hoop dance classes for a fun active workout. We have several short term apartment rentals available also, which are listed on Airbnb.com BL: What kind of food does your menu feature? JM: Just basic, healthy choices like fresh baked breads, homemade soup and fresh dough artisanal pizza. The sauce is a secret family recipe! Toppings are mostly locally sourced, and include garlic, roasted chicken, rosemary, sundried tomatoes, smoky sausage and artichokes. We have a great beer and wine menu to enjoy with dinner, and a constantly changing dessert selection — pretty much whatever treats we feel like making on any given day! BL: Well, you certainly have a beautiful spot here. How has your first year been? JM: With making fine adjustments and new ideas — really busy. It’s a labor of love, but introducing people to sauna is satisfying and many return on a regular schedule. It’s been really fun. BL recommends the drive to Paris for some warmth this winter — in and out of the sauna — you may get hooked on the Riverside Lodge. We are already!

Bethel Family Health Center:
B
Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow
ethel Family Health Center (BFHC) has been a fixture in the Bethel community for 36 years. Starting out on Main Street in 1979, the practice moved to its current location, a converted A&P grocery store, in 1986. Coming out of St. Elizabeth Medical Center Family Practice Residency, NY, together in 1993, Drs. Richard DeCarolis and Kevin Finley have steadfastly served the community for over 20 years. They have recently been joined by Kristen Waitt, a Family Nurse Practitioner, and Dr. Catherine Chamberlin. Nearly four thousand people from more than 25 towns rely on BFHC for their health care, the only medical office within 25 miles. In 2014, they made over 13,000 visits to the health center for services ranging from well child checks and care for chronic diseases, such as diabetes, asthma and heart disease, to setting broken bones, to learning new strategies for managing their emotional health. As a Federally Qualified Health Center, BFHC has the unique mission to serve all members of the community, regardless of age, medical condition, or their ability to pay for services. Over 370 patients benefit from our Affordable Care program, which allows low income patients and their families to receive services at discounted prices, going as low as $10 for a visit. Eligible, low income patients may also qualify for assistance with paying for needed medications. Last year 62 patients obtained free prescriptions for a savings of $252,000. Providing services to the whole person is an important and growing part of Bethel’s mission. Leslie Lufkin, LCSW, who has practiced clinical social work for 25 years, supports patients with behavioral health and substance abuse needs. Dental hygiene services for children are available two days a month at the health center provided by Sharon Smith-Bouchard, an independent practice dental hygienist. Crystal Fitch, a social worker, works with patients to solve problems with medical expenses, obtaining medications, food, housing and transportation, as well as to connect them to legal, elderly, behavioral health, disability and employment services. Tele-psychiatry services as well as care management will be offered in the near future. In 1999, BFHC became part of HealthReach Community Health Centers. HealthReach began providing medical care in 14

Bingham and surrounding towns of Somerset County in 1975, 40 years ago. Today HealthReach oversees Bethel’s health center
and 10 other Maine Federally Qualified Health Centers which are located in Albion, Bingham, Belgrade, Coopers Mills, Kingfield, Livermore Falls, Richard DeCarolis DO Madison, Rangeley, Richmond and Strong. The HealthReach administrative team works closely with BFHC and the local advisory board, Northern Oxford Health and Service Council, Inc. to ensure ongoing care and high quality services well into the future. Northern Oxford Health and Service Council, Inc. members represent the towns served by the center. They maintain the health center facility and provide ongoing feedback to the staff from the community perspective. The current Council members are: Eleanor Jodrey-President, Troy Jordan-Treasurer, Jarrod Crockett, Betsy Doyon, Sande Parker-Secretary, Dennis Wilson, and Sarah Tucker. The Council and BFHC are working together on a long range plan to bring additional services to the community. For more information, please contact Dianna Milot, Practice Manager, at 207.824.2193
The number of unique local retail shops that make Downtown Bethel such a fun place to stroll and browse just grew by one. Miss Miina, a new boutique full of items hand selected to make women feel special, opened it’s doors at 111 Main Street this fall. Miina Pawlowski, a longtime Woodstock resident, searched from here to Portland for the right location to establish her dream store. Featuring one of a kind goods from ethically responsible vendors, her establishment is filled with bath and body products,

clothing, jewelry and bags that quicken a shoppers pulse with the wonder of uncommon treasures. Miss Miina sources goods primarily from women-owned businesses that emphasize a sustainable, all-natural spirit. Lovely lavenderrosemary and blueberry soaps are produced by the Chase Street Soap Company in Bridgeton. Face and body balms, masks, salt and sugar scrubs conjured from rose petals, chocolate, and other natural botanicals by Poor & Pretty Apothecary grace the shelves. Handbags from Rough & Tumble in Norway — beautiful pieces that must be seen — are constructed of soft leathers, and stiffened canvas - high quality that wears well. Miss Miina’s carries scarves and comfortable clothing made from super soft materials. Organic cotton socks from Little River match up with fleece leggings, gloves, hats and warm 100% wool headbands. Elegant blouses are displayed in an eclectic mix of fine and fun textures and colors. Small run bags and scarves from New York are sprinkled about amidst decorated jewelry, cosmetic bags and fun little boxes. All are great gifts for friends and family as well as treats for bride’s maids - Miina can make every day memorable. A unique line of jewelry made from sparkling crystal groupings called Druzy Quartz glow in the bright colors of the host stones they sit above - earrings, pendants and bracelets that cast amazing rainbows. And from Gray, Morgan McGeehan Design supplies uncommon pendants and extraordinary silversmithing pieces. Pillows made from repurposed fabrics are scattered about featuring the State of Maine with a small button to represent Bethel. Sunglasses from Australia, infinity scarves — the special treats just for the ladies fill the store and spill from every corner. Discovery AND new experiences
Small towns can have surprisingly expansive resources. Deb Webster is a Newry resident, a mother of two, a graduate of MIT and Lesley University (M.Ed.) and the founder of The Eddy School . Building on the experience of homeschooling her own children, Deb advanced her vision to create a small, independent middle school for her community by holding an Open House in November of 2010. Her pitch to convince local families that she could produce an exciting and motivating curriculum attracted seven middleschool aged students to The Eddy School debut in the fall of 2011. The school offers a full curriculum of math, science, history and writing plus enrichment programs in music, art and Spanish language and 18

culture. Webster’s underlying concept — combining components of both classical and experiential educational models — allows students the freedom to speak and be heard, fail and succeed, explore and grow according to the needs of each individual. Students write a paper each week, read at least two novels per month and work through on-line math courses at their own pace. The writing program, based on the historical period under study at a given time, imparts depth and interconnectedness to both subjects. An open schedule allows kids time for discovery and new experiences both inside and outside the school environment. Recently, students spent a day at the Mahoosuc Guide Service assisting with winter preparations and learning how the farm
runs it’s sled dog business. Additional field trips on this year’s docket include a visit to the Salem Witch Museum and an outing to The Norlands, a 19th Century living history center in Livermore. The donation of a 15 passenger van has enabled regular trips to Portland Ovations, a performing arts organization, followed by lunches at the Portland Public Market. Many local professionals (and characters) come by to share their passions — often creating on-going relationships. Team building exercises and Tech Wizard Robotics at the Bryant Pond 4-H Camp, service learning opportunities at local non-profits and entries in
the Rube Goldberg Challenge round out a full slate of experiential education. The Eddy School is a place where Deb and her talented staff can work individually with their young charges to build character and a lifelong love of learning. The Eddy School Annual Fund, established through the generosity of an anonymous local donor, has enabled the school to offer $50,000 over the past five years to families requiring financial assistance. To learn more contact Deb (207) 381-7716 at the Eddy School or go to theeddyschool.com.

Snowmobiling in Western Maine
by Jessie Seymour Perkins
Last winter’s generous snowfall sparked a significant jump in interest in snowmobile ridership across the network of trails lacing the Western Maine Mountains. Whether you ride regularly or rent a sled for a few hours, getting out into the woods with friends and family is a guaranteed thrill. And thanks to the 280+ snowmobile clubs affiliated under the umbrella of the Maine Snowmobile Association, the trail network has never been safer and better maintained. Five active snowmobile clubs in the Bethel Area work together throughout the season to groom and inspect trails, cut brush, post signs, build bridges and update maps. One spur of the Interconnected Trail System (ITS) — 3,500 miles of primary trails that criss-cross the state from Presque Isle to Bar Harbor to York — passes right through Newry and on into the New Hampshire trail system. Maine’s snowmobile trails exist because people who love to ride have raised the funds to purchase, maintain and insure grooming equipment while expanding trail access through legislative initiatives and landowner outreach. So remember, when you go out to enjoy this fantastic resource, show your support and appreciation of their efforts by riding responsibly. 20
