For this issue, we interview Joey Kramer from Aerosmith about his coffee; we report on Mahoosuc Pathways. We give you an inside look at three top Maine Fishing Guides in our area, and as usual, we offer up some seasonal recipes. Finally, with the help of the Chamber, we give you information on the best of summer events, you’ll not want to miss a single one! My appreciation runs deep for my amazing support team, from Ben Bruno in design and production, to Nate Scott with his editing finesse, to Dean Gilbert for his unflagging enthusiasm in restocking the great establishments that carry BL, and finally, for Rebecca Hastings at Mahoosuc Realty for her constant smiles and encouragement. I am honored to lead this team -- without you Bethel Living would not have received the Chamber’s 2014 Award for Service and Retail. Thank you to the community as well for your warm words of praise and encouragement. To me, Bethel is home. Laurie Knowles Herron Publisher

Mahoosuc Pathways is dedicated to connecting communities through the development, maintenance, and promotion of a multi-use recreational trail network.

Many people have taken the time to enjoy the Bethel Pathway, a well constructed one-and-a-half-mile route that meanders along the Androscoggin from Davis Park over to Route 2, crossing the river on the new multi-use bridge and coming to an end on the side of the North Road near Great Adventure. And there, oddly, it stops. But not for long. Mahoosuc Pathways (MP) is a non-profit founded in 2011 that promotes outdoor adventure and connects communities in the greater Bethel area. Their mission is to build, maintain and advocate for a multi-use trail network in the Bethel area. MP, in collaboration with the Town of Bethel recently received a Recreational Trails Program grant to begin construction this summer on a new route extending the Bethel Pathway from its current terminus at Big Adventure Center out towards Angevine Park. Great news! What comes next is even better. Angevine Park is a natural gateway to the Town of Bethel’s 2,358 acre Bingham Forest, an enormous tract of land conveyed to the Bethel Water Company in 1925. This forest is to be managed in three ways; first as a backup water supply for the town, second, for sustainable timber management and third, for low impact recreational uses such as fishing, hiking, hunting, nature observation, picnicking, boating, cross-country skiing, snow-shoeing, bicycling and swimming. Bingham Forest has the potential for miles and miles of high quality mountain biking, Nordic and hiking trails and Mahoosuc Pathways is leading the effort to develop those trails in a sound manner. Sounds fantastic, but who is going to do the physical labor to develop this exciting infrastructure? Mahoosuc Pathways has the answer: in a unique partnership with the University of Maine 4-H Camp and Learning Center at Bryant Pond, MP has created the Oxford County Conservation Corps, a program that provides local high school students the opportunity to pitch in. The program offers a stipend to the students as compensation for their time in the field while they develop leadership skills and learn modern, sustainable trail building techniques on public and conserved lands around the area. Mahoosuc Pathways is led by a committed Board of Directors, two vibrant committees and one part time staff member. Gabe Perkins, officially hired in March 2014 as the Projects Director for MP, oversees funding and implementation of the projects mentioned above and any emerging projects. Mahoosuc Pathways partners with Maine Trail Finder — the robust online hiking resource for Maine — to highlight Bethel area hikes. The following are three examples for a variety of ability levels that are accessible from Bethel. See you on the trail! For more information visit www.mahoosucpathways.org.
Easy Hike: Bethel Village History Walk This self-guided walking tour of 39 historic homes and sites in Bethel takes the user past homes that date from the 1770’s to the 1920’s. Explore the village of Bethel and take in historic inns, culturally significant homes, local leaders’ homesteads, churches and common spaces that help make Bethel unique. This easy walk through the village is on sidewalks or quiet, tree-lined streets. The network of homes is designed so that the user can fully immerse oneself in the experience or check out small portions of the tour. There are interpretive guides and occasional guided tours and information about these can be found at the Bethel Historical Society. FMI: www.mainetrailfinder.com/trails/trail/bethel-village-history-walk
Moderate Hike: Mount Will Trail This foot trail was developed by the Bethel Conservation Commission to increase public awareness of the natural resources and beauty of the Androscoggin River Valley. The section of trail from the trailhead to the North Ledges is in the 115 acre Bethel Town Forest. The Town of Bethel acquired the property in the 1800’s and it served as the Town Farm for a number of years. No buildings remain on the property but a field in the southeasterly portion of the land is still maintained for hay production by a local farmer. Timber is harvested periodically by the town. Deer winter on much on the southerly and easterly portions of the property and the harvesting plan protects the large hemlocks that provide cover for the deer. A number of descriptive signs on the North Ledges Section provide a guide to understanding the natural and logging history of the area. The overall loop is 3.25 miles long, moderately strenuous with short steep sections, and typically requires about 2 hours walking time. A shorter hike to the North Ledges only, or to the South Cliffs only, requires about 1.5 hours walking time. FMI: www.mainetrailfinder.com/trails/trail/mount-will-trail

Difficult Hike: Puzzle Mountain and Woodsum Spur The Grafton Loop Trail (GLT) leaves the parking lot and ascends to the open summit of Puzzle Mountain after passing several ledges with fine views of the Bear River Valley, the Mahoosuc Range and the Presidential Range beyond. About 0.1 miles before the summit, at a sign, the Woodsum Spur branches to the right. The GLT continues to the southwest peak and a large cairn with fine views in all directions. Descending slightly, it then follows open ledges until about 0.2 miles after the summit where the other end of the Woodsum Spur branches to the right. The GLT continues down Puzzle toward the the valley between Puzzle and Long Mountain. The Woodsum Spur, assuming you are traveling in a clockwise direction, goes gently up and down through small conifers skirting below the northern (tree-covered) and highest peak of Puzzle to a series of open ledges. It crosses over the open summit of the Southeast peak and begins heading consistently downhill. The trail then enters the woods and crosses a stream with reliable water about three fourths of the way along the Woodsum Spur. After another 0.5 miles in the woods, the trail emerges again at the GLT. It is about 6.5 miles round trip from the parking lot to the southwest summit of Puzzle and back on the GLT. The Woodsum Spur adds about 2.1 miles for a round trip of 8.6 miles. FMI: www.mainetrailfinder.com/trails/trail/puzzle-mountain-and-woodsum-spur Bethel LIVING | BethelLiving.com

Aerosmith drummer and rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Famer, Joey Kramer, has been served way too many lousy cups of coffee while on the road touring. Finally, in 2012 during a brief hiatus between worldwide gigs, Kramer combined his lifelong ambition to start a business with another overriding passion: coffee. He called up his longtime friend and lawyer, Frank Cimler, and together – along with Kramer’s brother-in-law, Ron Mann – they formed a business partnership to create and launch Rockin’ & Roastin’. “Rock star turned serious coffee entrepreneur? Only in America!” jokes Kramer. “I’ve put together a great team, and we’re devoted to bringing quality gourmet coffee to the market for a reasonable price -- Rockin’ & Roastin’ truly is my baby and getting to work with talented friends on this project has been amazing.” Cimler, an entertainment lawyer whose myriad of Joey Kramer, JC Monahan (Producer and credits include the Host of the TV show “Chronicle”, formerly production of the of Maine) and Frank Cimler “Boston Strong” 12

concert, is a New Hampshire native with close ties to the Sunday River region, where he owns a vacation home. Like Cimler, Kramer’s roots are most closely associated with New England and the duo have long shared a love for the Bethel area. This summer, Rockin’ & Roastin’ is a major sponsor of the 25th Annual Bethel Area Chamber Golf Classic and the java will flow all day to the delight of golfers and spectators alike. “It is important to us to make sure that we are immersed in the Bethel community due to the wonderful reception we have received from the local businesses and residents,” commented Cimler. “The area has really embraced us and we are entirely dedicated to doing our part.” For Bethel residents and visitors, Rockin’ & Roastin’ is becoming a year-round way of life. In May of 2013, Kramer announced a part-

nership with Comfort Foods, Inc. (North Andover, MA) to roast, package and distribute the fast growing coffee line. With this partnership, Kramer, Cimler and Mann were able to transition Rockin’ & Roastin’ from an online business into a regional entity, putting it on the shelves of thousands of grocery, wholesale and convenience stores and into restaurants and hotels throughout the East Coast. Says Kramer, “Aerosmith’s roots in New England are deep, so it was only natural for us to take Rockin’ & Roastin’ to this area first.” What does this mean for Bethel? You can get Rockin’ & Roastin’ all over the area, including fine establishments such as 22 Broad Street, the Barking Dawg Market, the Bethel Foodliner, the Bethel Inn Resort, the Black Diamond Steakhouse, Hannafords, Mt. Abram Resort and at The Matterhorn Ski Bar. Currently available in three organic brews, Rockin’ & Roastin’s varietals hail from Ethiopia, Guatemala and Sumatra, Kramer’s three favorite coffee-producing countries. What’s next? A single-serve option and new flavor are in the works. Sipping one of Kramer’s brews also has a charitable benefit. In June of 2013, Kramer announced a campaign to donate a portion of the Rockin’ & Roastin’ coffee sales to auto-dealership magnate, Ernie Boch, Jr.’s (Boch Enterprises) nonprofit organization, Music Drives Us, which supplies grants for music programs to effect positive changes for people in need throughout New England. “Ernie and I are friends who have long shared a love of music,” says Kramer. “With this pledge, we will be able to further deliver that passion to local New England communities that are near and dear to us.”

Want to start Rockin’ & Roastin’? Here are Joey’s tasting notes:
ETHIOPIA - DARK: strong, earthy woodiness with hints of clove, chocolate and a great variety of fruit and citrus notes GUATEMALA - DARK-MEDIUM: a mix of bright citrus with dark chocolate and dark char that has a pleasant woodiness, free of any bitterness SUMATRA - DARK: earthy at the start, then evoking tones of chocolate, citrus and sweetness For more information on Rockin’ & Roastin’, please visit: www.rockinandroastin.com. Fun & Festive
Summer Events by Jessie Seymour Perkins
There’s no shortage of fun, interesting, and quirky summertime events in the Bethel area. Just about every weekend features something going on in Bethel village, Sunday River, and beyond. Independence Day meets up with the Bethel Art Fair this year on the first weekend of July. On Friday, July 4, meet at the Bethel Historical Society for the Fourth of July Community Picnic & Concert (bethelhistorical.org). Dr. Moses Mason, one of Bethel’s founding fathers, began this Fourth of July tradition in the 1850s. Then, the weekend of July 5 & 6 features the newly-expanded Art Fair with a wide variety of fine art vendors on the town common, and fireworks on Saturday the 5th (mahoosucarts.org). MollyOckett Days on July 19 is the largest and longest-running festival, celebrating its 55th year in 2014. It’s a can’t-miss event with a parade around the village, food and craft vendors on the town common and Main Street, a hotly-contested frog-jumping contest, and fireworks. Always the third Saturday in July, the event was named for a Native American woman who lived in and around 16

Bethel in the late 1700s and very early 1800s and was known as a healer. On Sunday, July 20, the MollyOckett Days Classic features a 5-mile run, a 2-mile walk, a 1-mile kids’ run, and a diaper dash for toddlers. It has become a summer homecoming for those who have lived in Bethel in the past, whether they grew up here or spent time here for just a few seasons (mollyockettdays.com). In addition to the MollyOckett Days Classic, the Bethel area is host to many other competitions throughout the summer. Sunday River puts over 2000 hard-core competitors through mud pits, hoops of fire, walls of rock, and other crazy obstacles during its Tough Mountain Challenge July 26 (sundayriver.com). Golfers have the 14th Annual New England Couples Golf Championship to look forward to at The Bethel Inn Resort July 25-27 (bethelinn.com). The Maine State Triathlon on August 10 boasts lots of repeat racers due to its beautiful sprint-length course around Songo Pond and surrounding country roads. Kids can also test their mettle at the Kids’ Triathlon on Saturday, August 9, a noncompetitive event for kids age 8-14 with a 100-yard swim, 3 mile bike ride, and 1 mile run (mainestatetriathlon.com). Like fast cars and dirt roads? Sunday River is home base of the New England Forest Rally July 18-19. Regional and national pros take on the back roads of western Maine and northern New Hampshire in one of the country’s premiere rally events (newenglandforestrally.com).

Fishing Magicians
of Western Maine

With over 6,000 lakes and ponds, and more than 32,000 miles of rivers and streams Maine boasts some of the country’s best fishing -- and many people that love to wet a line think Western Maine’s bounty truly is as good as it gets. Anglers travel from New Zealand, England, Argentina and Chile, as well as from across the United States, to try their luck right here in the Bethel area because we have some of the best fishing on the planet. In very little time, you can be surrounded by cold, fresh, clean water with tributaries aplenty. Trout, salmon and small mouth bass abound,
displaying the unspoiled vigor found in fish that have not been hooked again and again. Biologists, Fish Culturists, Anglers, Wardens, and Registered Maine Guides claim that what we have is amazingly special and unique. It is not uncommon to catch a 4-5 lb. brook trout and a very healthy salmon all in the same morning. BL had a chance to sit down with three of the most in-demand area fishing guides to find out what they know about stalking the local waterways.
Luke Gray
Hunting, Fishing & Recreational Guide Locke Mountain Guide Service Luke Gray is proud to admit that his passion for fishing comes from his free-spirited, barefooted mom, Jennifer Pitcher. He caught his first trout while fishing at age 5 and immediately fell in love with the sport. Just two days before meeting with BL Luke’s mom caught a 28” lake trout and was thrilled with the catch. Luke’s dad bought him his first fly rod at age 10, and recently Luke passed that rod on to Eric Souther’s boy Adler. Summers spent on South Arm hanging out with friends at Middle Dam provided Luke with the opportunity to meet many Maine characters. He told BL of “Honey” Cronin who got her guide’s license at age 12, and is the “Queen of South Richardson Lake”. Luke also mentions “Fly Rod” Crosby, (she boasts the title of the First Registered Maine Guide) and spoke of Louise Dickinson Rich, famed for her 1940’s publication “We Took to the Woods”. This is what Luke grew up with, savoring Richardson Lake as his playground. After graduating from Gould Academy Luke attended UVM, acquiring his BA in English. He spent a decade traveling around, then returned home upon realizing the unique nature of his childhood. After spend-

ing a summer fishing like crazy, Luke decided to pursue the sport as a career. He tells BL that the Maine Guide test is hard -- you have to study -- and it’s work to achieve the title, but once you receive that status it’s important to start giving back. He’s been guiding for 6 years now and feels his strength is in communicating the experience of harmony with the outdoors. He is a hunter, a fisherman and a gatherer who knows his way around the Western Maine woods. Whether locating the perfect fishing spot or leading a moose or rabbit hunt, Luke excels at getting his clients into the environment that suits their goals. He is a Fishing Guide and a Recreational Guide, and loves to work with people who are committed to the outdoor experience. His expertise encourages folks to return year after year because he pours his heart into fulfilling their aspirations. Luke’s favorite venues to fish are the Androscoggin River, the Rapid River, the Magalloway River, the Wild River -- and a few other secret places he shared with BL . . . but that’s another story. He has some special techniques to get his clients the best fishing experience and wants to share the magic as soon as you can spare some time. Luke can be contacted through Locke Mountain Guide Service. Visit www.lockemountainguideservice.com and call him at 207-381-7322
Eric Souther
Maine Fishing Guide, the Enriched Learning Center Eric has been rafting and guiding in this area for over 17 years. His combination of practical knowledge and skill make him one of ELC’s senior guides. He knows that the love of fishing can start early -- his favorite scenario is to be out on a pontoon boat in the early morning with a couple of youngsters waiting for the inevitable hook of a small-mouth bass or a pickerel. When he introduces fishing to a beginner there is no greater thrill than the first tug on the end of the line and the action of reeling in to marvel at the surprise of the catch. Trips to the pontoon boat start in his 10-passenger van; as you wind through the mountains to your destination Eric narrates the local history and shares his knowledge of flora and fauna. Eric teaches the gentle handling of the fish at the shore followed by a careful release in order to encourage sustainability. Once on the water he will assist with the catch, identification, photography shoot, and then the release, all of which brings Eric joy. Eric provides a good time – he loves to interact with his clients on a very personal level, often taking them out of their comfort zone in a supportive manner. He strives to teach solid skills in a safe environment -- bringing clients to places they would be unable to tackle on their own. Eric tells BL that the State of Maine once required all “out-of-staters” wishing to wander into the wilderness to have a Registered Maine Guide along because so many folks got lost. Eric loves the Rapid River, and knows it from a kayak, on foot or in a raft. The Rapid River, Eric assures us, is most renowned for it’s brook trout -- known as Maine’s premier native brook trout fishing spot, anglers can land 5-6 pounders up to 28” long -- the river boasts it’s generous share of monsters. Due to the deep water spawning grounds, the state regulates it as “Catch and Release” and fly fishing only. The Rapid runs through a series of laddered rapids and deep pools called “the staircases”; this unique set of features provides excellent grounds for the trout as well as many salmon. His passion for this sport is obvious. On Lake Umbagog, with its amazing scenery, unbroken wilderness, sunsets and wildlife it is breathtakingly gorgeous, pristine and untouched. Eagles, moose, loons and clean untouched shoreline deliver a day that will always be remembered. Hakan Adams
Maine Fishing Guide • Sun Valley Sports Hakan Adams guides for Sun Valley Sports in Newry, located on the access road to the Sunday River Ski Area. He grew up in Oxford County, has fished these waters his entire life and knows where to find bass, trout or pretty much anything else you might want to catch. He started fishing with his dad a bit late -- at the age of 3 -- and picked up fly fishing with a passion when he hit high school. After moving west, he began teaching lessons in 2009 with the Reel Life out of Santa Fe and introduced the sport to many beginners before returning to Maine three years ago. This will be his third season back in Maine as a fly fishing instructor, and a newly inducted Registered Maine Guide. Some of Hak’s favorite hot spots include the Androscoggin River, (where Sun Valley does most of their float trips), the Magalloway River, (where he leads many of their “walk and wade” trips), and the Rapid River. But Hakan also likes fishing many of the local ponds -- Indian Pond for it’s seclusion as well as Songo and South Ponds for the small-mouthed bass and pickerel. Choose a half- or whole-day excursion and whether you want to “walk and wade” or be in a “float boat” Hakan will have you out as early as possible -- a departure of 5:30am is often what he recommends. Drop-in at Gilead to start the six-mile float down the “Andro” and glory in approximately 4 hours of uninterrupted fishing. The Androscoggin is float-boat heaven where there are few shore areas accessible by foot. A drift boat is ideal for two fishermen, allowing Hakan to maneuver clients into the most likely setting for success. He will help select the proper fly, get to a hot spot and keep you in the action, assisting with the catch and release to support sustainability. A side benefit of a trip with Hak is the opportunity to view a wide variety of wildlife -- from eagles and osprey, herons and hawks to moose and deer. Warm days delight anglers with large hatches that offer a lot of surface activity. Hakan’s passion for fishing comes from his love for connecting with nature. “To see beaver swimming around you, to watch a hatch, these are things that folks in a motor boat will miss for sure. Fishing brings me a connection to nature that I can find nowhere else.” Sun Valley Sports offers passionate guides - Brian Reeder and Lisa Whitcomb Freda join Hakan in ensuring that your trip will be a delight. Their fishing classes for women bring new fans to the sport. Sun Valley also offers ATV trips. Check out their website and watch for updates for an exciting 2014 season.
