Publisher’s Note Thank you so much for picking up a copy of the Summer Issue of Bethel Living Magazine! Boots and jackets are stowed away, sandals and shorts have made a triumphant return. Long days crowd the calendar with picnic hiking, the perfect roll cast or that portage to a blue gem not seen since last year. So many ways to celebrate the hot days. Kick off the summer by joining us for the Bethel, Maine Moose Festival from June 12-14 on the Bethel Common. A visit with Becky Secrest filled us in on the Androscoggin River Watershed Council’s Source to Sea paddling extravaganza - our coverage could help make this the summer you paddle new vistas. We tour and report on beautiful Upton with it’s breath-taking views and historical treasures. ELC Outdoors gives us a report of their rafting trips and new ropes courses. The Maine Mineral & Gem Museum begins the valuable recording of historical mining stories, and we offer an update on the tremendous expansions at the Bethel Historical Society. Thank you to all our contributors and advertisers, who make this project a joy. My heartfelt appreciation goes out to you, for without you this publication would not flourish. I look forward to seeing you around town!

source to sea If paddling through pristine verdant countryside with a fun group of river activists is your idea of a perfect summer diversion then read on because the Androscoggin River Watershed Council has a full slate of events upcoming. The July 4th prelude paddle will launch from the Steamer Diamond site north of Errol, NH for a trip up the Magalloway River to explore some quiet spots on a quest for wildlife sighting opportunities. Toward dusk participants will take-out and enjoy the Errol fireworks show from across the water. Next up, July 10 features the first leg of the 20th annual Source to Sea, a series of 2 to 5 hour trips that start in the headwaters of the Androscoggin at Lake Umbagog then work their way down the river one stretch at a time to finish in Merrymeeting Bay at the Brunswick-Topsham Land Trust on August ninth. The Source to Sea paddling project is organized and lead by the Androscoggin River Watershed Council, whose mission is to continuously improve environmental quality, encourage stewardship and promote healthy and prosperous communities in the Androscoggin Watershed. Most paddles are scheduled for Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Descriptions for each leg of the trip are available on the ARWC website, offering information 6

Bethel LIVING | BethelLiving.com

such as the type of paddle (mellow, quick water or whitewater), GPS coordinates of the put-ins and take-outs, mileage and expected paddle time for each trip. Average headcount for these day trips runs around 15 paddlers and many people depart the group to camp or explore in the area, then rejoin for the next day’s fun, creating a multi-day mini-vacation. Last year, Shaker Hill Outdoors, a local source for outdoor equipment, appeared at several spots with stand-up paddle boards and other types of kayaks and boats for participants to demo. Visit their website for more details on demo days, local area hikes, special programs on paddling days, and other fun and excitement on the Androscoggin. The full schedule is here for their paddling days in July and August. The Council, founded in 1999, sponsors an annual conference to teach and share awareness of the Clean Water Act and its importance in improving the quality of the river water. The Androscoggin, once one of the nation’s most polluted rivers, is now a safe place to get outside and recreate -- allowing first hand observation of an essential watershed and an ecological success story. With trophy fish in its upper stretches and plentiful bass toward the coast, wildlife such as eagles, osprey, loon, deer and moose are now thriving in a healthier and cleaner environment. Grab a paddle and join in the fun with the Source to Sea!

The ARWC is a 401c3 non-profit with approximately 400 members and a strong focus on habitat management and stewardship of the Androscoggin River. FMI contact Becky Secrest, Director, AndroscogginWatershed.org or call 207-824-3813, 207-318-4217 or 207-754-8158

Jim Nicols has been Banking with Frank for more than three decades. While initially, his business was exclusively logging, he’s diversified to create the luxury home community of Locke Summit in Bethel. “We didn’t hit it at the best of times for real estate. But it’s better now,” says Jim. “Franklin has always stuck with us, in good times and bad times. That is why this project is still going.” “They’ve always supported us and believed in what we do.”

A Western Maine Historical Treasure

Upton

All the good days flow from the lake -- in much the same way as the pristine waters course to the sea -- encouraging life in a cycle as old as the mountains that overlook and feed Umbagog. Mists lying silent upon the lake’s surface greet the residents of Upton, Maine on a fine spring morning, which seemed as though it could never arrive during the frozen days of winter. Lake Umbagog is full of snow-melt and wildlife, scenic beauty and summer possibilities. And the townsfolk, as they have for more than 150 years, gaze on the highland lake and make plans to range through the forest and down to the shore for another season’s idyll. Pressed hard against the New Hampshire border, Upton sits nearly 2,000 feet above sea level, offering views of Mount Washington to the southwest, Rangeley to the northeast and majestic Umbagog Lake 800 feet below. The population of Upton peaked in the early 1900’s during a time of strenuous labor, with the village housing as many as 200+ full-time residents, most all employed as farmers and lumberjacks, making for colorful Saturday evening boxed dinners and dances, group socializing and

occasional brawls. Nowadays, hiking, kayaking, fishing, wildlife viewing, hunting, trapping, biking, ATVing and snowmobiling are the primary activities in this unique place. As if stepping back into an earlier era, the 65 year-round residents embrace their community and look after each other -- there is no other way to survive. It was from this area that Louise Dickinson Rich penned We Took to the Woods, her autobiographical “back to the land” novel. The Upton Historical Society gives tours of Forest Lodge, Rich’s compound on the Swift River, while providing financial assistance and volunteer hours to help maintain the grounds. Other community treasures -- buildings located around the town center -- are tended to by the active residents. The Upton Schoolhouse, the Upton Town Hall and Public Library, the Upton Union Church, the Upton House B&B and the Upton Ladies Aid Building form a hub to facilitate the conduct of town business. The Upton Ladies Aid, which had their first meeting in 1883, sprang from an earlier pre-Civil War group: the Upton Ladies Benevolent Sewing Society. These days the Ladies continue

The two-story Upton Schoolhouse (with the original bell) has been restored, providing a home for the Historical Society’s museum on the second floor, a showcase of the area’s rich history and many well preserved artifacts. The Upton House B&B plays host to a surprising number of international travelers who come looking for serenity and the occasional moose. Many of the residents have been here all their lives, with others settling more recently to enjoy the quality of life in this uncommon place. Most everyone mentions the exceptional charm and pride in community found in this pleasant hamlet. Later in the summer this cohesiveness is on display at Upton Fun Day -- held in August to help fund the insurance costs of the

Schoolhouse / Historical Society / Museum. Upton is also the base of the Letter B Notch Riders ATV Club, which cleans and maintains an extensive local trail network offering an accessible corridor through the wilderness. Pathways connecting Rangeley, Maine to Pittsburgh, New Hampshire and beyond afford beautiful scenic views from rugged outcrops. In winter the State Line Snowmobile Club meets to enjoy the different charms of snowy wilderness and frozen white expanses. Both groups update their event list through the Upton House B&B’s Facebook page at facebook.com/uptonhouseinn To keep up with what’s going on, Joe Bernier writes a weekly column for the Bethel Citizen about Upton, an indispensable connection between Upton and the outside world.

As an itinerant healer and herbalist for both natives and newcomers, Molly Ockett established close relations

with the early settlers in many local communities. Molly Ockett’s intimate understanding of the natural environment and her use of herbal remedies to cure many of the afflictions of both native peoples and white settlers earned her the respect and gratitude of the local populace. A decided lack of health-care options and her ability to successfully turn raw materials into tonics, salves and poultices solidified her status in

Bethel LIVING | BethelLiving.com

Polarity Energy Therapy is a form of energy bodywork based on the concept that the life force flows through ‘meridians’ or electro-magnetic pathways in our body. Ancient and Traditional health care systems call this “Chi” or “Prana”. When energy is blocked it can cause dis-ease- physically, emotionally and spiritually. Emily uses a combination of gentle massage and fingertip pressure on energy points along your meridians and chakras to relax and clear these blockages. The Benefits of Polarity Energy Therapy include relieving chronic health issues such as arthritis, back pain, headaches, depression and digestive problems, strengthening the immune system, bringing mental and emotional clarity to a troubling issue, and maintaining and enhancing wellbeing. Emily lives and her husband, Marcel Polak, have lived in Woodstock since 1978. She is certified in Polarity Therapy and has been a licensed clinical social worker. She was certified as a Polarity Therapist from the Polarity Realization Institute of Portland, Maine and held a Polarity Practice in the 1990’s. the world of the white settlers. Molly Ockett often came to Newry and Riley Plantation (“Ketchum”), where she taught Martha Russell Fifield to count in her native language and shared with her some medicinal knowledge and instructions for making root beer, medicines and dyes. Perhaps the most re-told story of Molly

Ockett’s healing powers is her cure of an infant named Hannibal Hamlin during the winter of 1809-10 -- the man, of course, who later became Abraham Lincoln’s first vice-president. Bethel Living recently spoke with several local healing practitioners and asked them about their professions and services.

He was also the first person to set up a Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA) at the Society, providing a donation of cash in exchange for guaranteed lifetime income payments at a fixed rate. In summarizing the significance of Charles Huntoon’s gift, Executive Director Randall Bennett remarked, “This second and final addition to the Robinson House will meet our research library and museum collection storage requirements for the foreseeable future, allow better public access to our varied holdings, and -most importantly -- permit the Society to continue its important role as a center for the study of this region’s colorful and unique

Thanks to the financial generosity of Charles R. Huntoon of Portland, the BHS now has the money to pursue a September 2000 design proposal from Smith Reuter Lull Architects of Lewiston for the reconstruction of the rear ell and barn at the Society’s 1821 O’Neil Robinson House. Over the years the view has diminished due to tree growth. Through selective tree removal my view is restored as when I first moved in..

After Kevin reclaimed our view by expertly trimming, thinning and removing the many trees that had grown and obstructed our beautiful mountain vista, we quickly sold our house which had been on the market for an extended period of time.
