Fall brings shorter days, cooler temperatures and seasonal changes that will bring us to the long-awaited first snowfall. It’s a time to enjoy a fresh local crisp apple, the scent of wood smoke, the feeling of warmth as the sun glides out from behind a cloud and the delight of a favorite sweater on a cool eve. We have it all right here in Bethel! In this issue we have information on the Maine Mineral & Gem Museum, plus a Welcome Back!! to Peter Kailey as he brings the Sport Thoma ski shop to town. We drop in on the Mahoosuc Mountain Rescue Team to savor tales of danger and survival. Our Trail Mix column features a Festive Dinner based on real foods, and finally an article on Bethel’s Harvestfest and Chowdah Cookoff. Bethel Living is published quarterly and is distributed as a free publication. Only through the support of all of our advertisers and contributors are we able to bring this publication to you. The Maine Mineral & Gem Museum
Building a Museum
Visitors and residents of Bethel have certainly noticed the construction on Main Street at the corner of Chapman Street, as the former Odd Fellows Hall is being linked by a new structure to the building next door. A new museum is being built in the quaint village setting that is already drawing national and international attention. The Maine Mineral & Gem Museum will tell the story of Maine’s mining and mineral history. Through vast collections and archived historical materials, MMGM will tell visitors about the region’s significant mineralogical history. From the first tourmaline discovery at Mt. Mica in the 1820’s and more than a century of industrial feldspar mining, to exciting discoveries today, visitors will gain an understanding of how these minerals were discovered and why they are important. The museum has amassed the largest collection of Maine minerals and gems ever displayed under one roof. Visitors will also be dazzled by a “Hall of Gems” and exhibits of specimens like aquamarine, amethyst and Maine’s State stone, tour6

maline, and be able to buy unique jewelry made from Maine gemstones at the museum store. The museum will also feature a cutting studio. Museum founders Mary McFadden and Larry Stifler were introduced to the mineral world when they purchased the historic Bumpus Mine in Albany Township in 2005. They wanted to preserve a piece of mining history made famous by the giant beryl crystals, up to 20 feet in length, discovered there in the 1920’s. Like those giant beryl sections, most of Maine’s finest mineral specimens have left the state over the last century. Stifler began a quest to keep Maine’s minerals and gems from leaving the state and repatriating many that had already left. “We have a chance to preserve Maine’s mineral history. This will be a world-class museum for the people of Maine and for visitors,” he said. Exciting mineral discoveries have been made in Maine, including the 1972 discovery of North America’s largest tourmaline trove in Newry. In short order one ton of gem tourmaline came out of the ground. Miner Frank Perham of West Paris, son of Stan Perham who founded the well known Perham’s Maine Mineral Store and beloved by the mineral community, was there in ’72. Frank is still mining at 80. When asked about the new museum, he said, “The museum will allow people of all ages to view what has been found and all that is available in the area. It might pique their interest in minerals and if one kid turns out to be a geologist, I would be proud.” MMGM is already working with regional schoolteachers to ensure that science standards are incorporated into exhibit design to address curricula at several grade levels. Museum Director, Barbra
Barrett explained, “Our goal is to host students from all over the state, not just once, but several times. This museum will be an educational resource, where curiosity and learning are an ongoing process. We will work with teachers to make this a museum their students not only tour, but use.” The museum will have research facilities with a scanning electron microscope (SEM), an X-ray diffractometer, and other equipment instrumental in pegmatite research. Pegmatite are igneous rocks that form during the final stage of a magma’s crystallization--they contain exceptionally large crystals and minerals that are rarely found in other rocks. Researchers from all over the world will have access to the museum’s facility and collections to further knowledge of the mineral world. New mineral species will be identified and named right here in Bethel. The museum’s board of advisers is in development and already has over 50 experts in related fields. Dr. Carl Francis, recently retired as curator of the Harvard University Mineralogical Museum, is curator of the new museum. “The museum collections are strongly focused on Maine, but include world wide material for
comparative and educational purposes,” Francis explained. While the core collection is centered on Maine and New England, the museum will also feature the largest meteorite display in New England. Visitors will have a unique opportunity to view, and even touch material from outer space that predates our own solar system. The meteorite exhibit will include lunar and This group from the International Pegmatite Symposium visited the site in June, and are thrilled with a sample of Martian material that palasite, a slice of an iron meteorite. will be sure to fascinate. So, when will the museum open? This has been a moving target as the scope and scale of the museum have grown. Construction is expected to be complete this fall, followed by exhibit fabrication and installation. “We are fortunate to be working with museum designer Jay Paulus, who has designed the mineral display at the Smithsonian,” said Barrett. When asked to provide an expected opening date, Barrett simply stated, “Quality takes time. We hope to open our doors to visitors in late 2014.” MMGM is awaiting word on its application for non-profit status, when it will launch a membership and founding members campaign. Stay tuned for details. For more information about MMGM, and to learn how you can be involved, email info@mainemineralmuseum.org or visit the museum website at www.mainemineralmuseum.org. An Educational Resource, Where Curiosity and Learning are an Ongoing Process
The MMGM will be a world class Museum focused on preserving and exhibiting Maine mineral specimens, gemstones, and historical documents that tell the story of Maine’s mining history. Never before has this history been told in one place and this extensively. The MMGM exhibits will tell the complete story of mining, minerals, and gems; how minerals form, found, and mined; the historical and current industrial uses for minerals; and the art of cutting gems and creating jewelry. This will be the world’s most extensive collection, exhibits, and archival documents of Maine mining, minerals, and gems in one location. Miner tours will allow a “start to finish” experience of this fascinating field. The Museum store will allow visitors to own many of the types of Maine minerals and gems on display. From simple and inexpensive gifts and souvenirs to spectacular, unique and custom designed and custom ordered items. In addition, the MMGM will feature exhibitions of out of this world meteorites, fossils, and other minerals.

The Kailey Family Returns to Sunday River
The will to create requires first the ability to envision a new reality, to see clearly what most people are unable to bring into focus. And so it was that in the winter of 1958 a man named Paul Kailey joined eight other men to climb Barker Mountain in search of terrain suitable for a ski area. All but one of those men wore snowshoes. Paul Kailey climbed with his skis, and thus became the first to descend what we now know as Sunday River Ski Resort. On December 18, 1959 Sunday River hosted the first paying customers to ski in Newry, and Paul along with his wife Jean, opened the doors to their ski shop located in the basement of the newly built base lodge. The shop was an instant success and moved to its own building just one year later--at the base of the Lower Cascades Trail. The Kailey’s named the expanded establishment the Sunri Ski Shop, and soon a second Sunri Ski Shop was opened on Main Street in the town of Bethel. Both shops remained in business for thirty years. Paul served on the Board of Directors at Sunday River and worked as a Sales Rep for several ski accessory companies. While Paul was on the road, Jean handled all the business dealings and served as his equal partner at the ski shops. Today Paul’s gentle demeanor and
Sport Thoma, a Ski & Snowboard Shop
dedication to Sunday River are memorialized by the Sunday River / Gould Academy Competition Center which bears his name. As time went on, the shops became owned and operated by Paul and Jean’s son Peter Kailey and his wife Nancy. Peter eventually sold out to Lee Harmon and followed his father’s footsteps in becoming a full time rep for a number of ski-related companies. Ultimately, the call of retail was too strong, and Peter re-entered that side of the business in 2004 when he bought SportThoma, a ski shop in Lincoln, NH. Now, 54 years after his father first helped skiers at the new resort, Peter is returning with a vision of Sport Thoma for Bethel. Skiers and riders who visit Sport Thoma in its brand new building on Route 2 will be seeing a new store name, but familiar faces will be there to greet them. Managing the shop will be Leigh Breidenbach, who taught skiing at Sunday River while working her way through the University of Maine at Farmington. Leigh has recently retired from UMF, where she directed the Ski Industries Program in its final years. Buster Bean, a well known ski tuner, will bring his Best Tunes to the new shop--while UMF Ski Industries graduate Adam Grenier (freshly returned from a stint at one of Vail’s top ski shops) will bring boot fitting expertise. Peter Kailey and his team are proud to offer an exciting new shop for skiers and riders featuring the same knowledgeable and friendly service that Sunday River customers experienced in the earliest years of the resort area. (The full story of the Kailey’s early involvement at Sunday River can be found in Dave Irons’ book, “Sunday River, Honoring the Past, Embracing the Future”, available at Sport Thoma.) The Mahoosuc Mountain
Rescue Team
Photo by Craig Angevine of YeahBudPhotogrpahy.com

Bethel LIVING | BethelLiving.com
The lure of the Mahoosuc Mountains in Western Maine attracts many different people for a wide variety of reasons. Thru-hikers on the Appalachian Trail, ice climbers, trout anglers, as well as an array of day hikers and canoeists flock to our rivers, streams and mountains to bask in the beauty that this area provides during every season. Most of the time, with proper planning, folks get in and out of the woods safely, making memories to last a lifetime. But accidents can and do happen, and sometimes people go into the woods unprepared, with insufficient water or inadequate protection from the elements. When things don’t go as planned or an accident occurs, the Mahoosuc Mountain Rescue Team (MMRT) is called into action. Created in 1984 from a core of Outward Bound instructors with a passion for the wilderness and a deep understanding of the Maine mountains, the MMRT has saved many lives throughout the years. Robert Baribeau, who has been involved with the team since 1988, told BL that his group acts as an extension of local area fire and rescue squads, and often receives the first call when a search and rescue is needed. What was once a rather loose group in the 1980’s has grown into a more formal organization and is recognized as a certified member of the Maine Association for Search and Rescue. Over time the professionalism of the MMRT has made them the first choice when extra help is needed in Baxter State Park or when the Maine State Warden’s Service has to cover the roughest terrain. A 9-1-1 call goes to the Maine State Police. If a “Search and Rescue” is needed, the Maine Warden Service or the The Marine Patrol will be called depending on whether a land or water based response is required. Occasionally a call will come directly to the Mahoosuc Mountain Rescue Team, who are qualified to assemble and immediately answer the call. The MMRT has been on rescue calls all over the state, including Waterville, Franklin, and most recently in the Sugarloaf area. The MMRT is one of very few teams in Maine that handles extreme situations such as rock and ice climbing. For this reason, they also handle calls for the Mount Washington Valley and the New Hampshire Fish & Game Department, as well as the US Forest Service. The core MMRT group consists of about 25 volunteers, with most living right in the Bethel Area. On the Team are many rock and ice climbers, alpine and back-country skiers and ski patrollers, all with highly polished life-saving skills. Some of the key team members with Bob Baribeau are Chris Hayward, Landon Fake, David Walker, Jim Sysko and Roger Beaudoin, and there are many more. When BL spoke with Bob he was prepping for a trip to the Sugarloaf area to search for a missing 66 year old female thru-hiker on the Appalachian Trail. With at least 10 actively involved women, MMRT can provide unique assistance using the viewpoint of a female to come up with thoughts or ideas
that may not occur to the men; a perfect example of how MMRT responds with flexibility in a crisis. The MMRT has a special relationship with the Maine Service and with Baxter State Park. For more than 20 years members have gone to Baxter multiple times per season to be on call for any search and rescue situations that might arise. They carry radios, practice and train for evacuations and hone their skills while in the Park. About two years ago, Bob and his crew were summoned to assist a 60 year old man on the Hunt Trail with severe hypothermia who was quite near death. The man could not speak or function and was shivering uncontrollably. In this situation they prepared a shelter, fed the man hot liquids and provided medical attention to stabilize his core temperature. Once the man became coherent they carried him out to safety. Sometimes little can be done--one call reported a 52 year old man struggling on the lower Abol Trail, along the Knife’s Edge leading to the peak of Mount Katahdin. Unfortunately, when the crew arrived the man had already expired from a heart attack and the team had to carry him from the lower section of the Knife’s Edge to the
summit--a grueling climb--where he was evacuated via helicopter. Roger Beaudoin shared a rescue story with BL that occurred in the summer of 2009 on the Appalachian Trail near Spec Pond. The Warden Service put a call in to the MMRT about a man who was crying out for help in a tent obstructing the trail above tree line. David Walker and Roger went ahead of the folks who were carrying medical equipment and located a 60-year-old man who had fallen on slippery stairs and dislocated his shoulder. While David assisted the man in the tent, Roger communicated the situation and their location to other team members. The man was eventually loaded onto a litter, an aluminum stretcher-like device with a detachable wheel, which can come in handy when lowering a victim down through rugged terrain. Weather conditions prevented a helicopter evacuation and the team struggled often through knee-deep mud to complete the rescue. The MMRT responded to the call at 4pm and were not “out of the woods” until 2am the next morning. It is not unusual for the Mahoosuc Mountain Rescue Team to be in the wilderness pursuing their passion of using map and compass, tracking, or practicing their medical skills. These folks share a strong bond of brotherhood without a regimented hierarchy, working together, sharing ideas and perspectives, and offering the utmost respect for each other. We certainly are very lucky to have such a great resource based here in the Bethel, Maine area. Bethel LIVING | BethelLiving.com

Directions Mix these ingredients in a large wooden salad bowl.
Ingredients For the Orange Vinaigrette Dressing 1 /8 Cup of Extra Virgin Olive Oil 1 /2 Cup of Fig or Regular Balsamic Vinegar Freshly Ground Salt & Pepper to taste Optional – 1 Tbsp. Spicy Brown Mustard
Directions Mix all in a small jar and shake vigorously, then pour over the salad and serve. Made one hour ahead and chill.
Broccoli with Bacon (from Abel James, learn more at www.fatburningman.com)

Return chopped bacon to the pan and toss with salt, pepper and onion flakes, then serve. Leftovers are delicious and enjoyed the next day!
Rhubarb Fool I harvest my rhubarb all summer long, and lob off any flowers that attempt to send the plant into seed production. You can call me a fool for rhubarb any day!
Ingredients 11/2 lbs. rhubarb, trimmed, sliced ½ in. thick (about 4 cups worth) 1 /2 cup honey Zest and juice of 1 orange 2 TBS finely chopped candied ginger 1 /2 vanilla bean, split (if substituting with extract, use 2 tsp vanilla extract) Pinch of fine sea salt 3 /4 cup heavy cream 1 TBS granulated sugar
Directions 1. In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the rhubarb, honey, orange zest and juice, candied ginger, vanilla, and sea salt. Stir. 2. Cover and cook, stirring every few minutes for 10 minutes, until the mixture has come to a boil and the rhubarb has softened. 3. Remove from heat and allow to cool. Remove the vanilla bean (n/a if using vanilla extract) and transfer the rhubarb compote to a bowl, refrigerate uncovered for at least 30 minutes, or until very cold. 4. Whip the cream and sugar at medium speed until soft peaks form. 5. Set aside 1/3 cup of the compote to garnish the dessert, then fold the remaining compote into the whipped cream. Spoon the fool into six 1/2 cup glasses or dishes and chill for 1 hour before serving topped with the remaining compote. Bethel LIVING | BethelLiving.com

We’re Bethel, Maine’s only steakhouse! At the Black Diamond Steakhouse, most everything we offer is homemade, right here in our own kitchen, from the finest quality ingredients we can find. We hand cut and age our steaks and meats, and we grow our own vegetables and herbs, and feature them on our food, beverage menus and specials. You’ll be delightfully surprised at what we have in store for you. Come join us for breakfast, lunch or dinner and we’ll treat you like family. You will find our restaurant to be homey, and comfortable, with only the finest quality foods offered for your enjoyment. After all, why would you want it any other way?
