Publisher’s Note Thank you so much for picking up a copy of the Spring Issue of Bethel Living Magazine! What an amazing winter we have had. Venturing out to ski and snowshoe, on and off the mountain, has been phenomenal -leaving the rest of the country jealous of our plentiful snow. The gorgeous Western Maine Mountains truly are the best place to enjoy all life has to offer. Spring is a time for rebirth, a time for growth. The season to energize, peel off a few layers and start to feel the warmth of the sun again. Take this occasion to reconnect with the earth -- sink your fingers and toes into terra firma and plant some nurturing vegetation, whether to please your eyes or your belly. In this issue we look into Bethel’s Edible Main Street plans and Anna Sysko’s amazing homestead, then get the lowdown on the Western Maine Fly Fishing Expo. We recommend a visit to Norway for a tour of their renovated downtown area. While there, drop into Tucker’s Pub on a weekend evening to enjoy homemade pub food and a frosty beer while listening to great music. Stop by Pat’s Pizza here in Bethel to visit Donna Gillis’ Honor the Brave Flag quilt, where you can share a memory or a tribute to someone for their time spent serving our country.

edible Main STREET in Bethel, Maine

When the voluntary gardeners of downtown Bethel have realized their vision of colorful Swiss chard intermixed with lush fruit trees, bright red tomatoes shading glowing orange squashes, vine-ripe zucchinis and other fresh greens all growing in small plots up and down Main Street they will have accomplished more than putting free fresh produce on their neighbors plates. By using small scale food production as a focal point they anticipate the creation of new community networks linking the spheres of business groups with non-profit and educational entities to promote enhanced food security and a unique streetscape. The “Edible Main Street” initiative took root here two years ago after a local group of Master Gardeners, the Bethel Garden Club and Amanda Moran, the owner of a uniquely charming gift shop called Nabos, were inspired by a TED talk given by Pam Warhurst -a champion of locavore culture from the UK. Amanda jumped in with the installation of four raised beds in front of her shop, then expanded last spring by adding a much larger side garden with fruit trees. As hoped, Amanda and the newly created “EMS” committee have enlisted the help of many in the community to drive a significant expansion of Bethel LIVING | BethelLiving.com 6

these micro-gardens into the upcoming growing season. Reprising their generous support from last year, Northern Roots Grow Supply in Greenwood will again be donating a fresh stockpile of seedlings. The “Congo Craftsmen” have built nine new 16” square planter boxes for early spring installation on Main Street. And, Daisy Troops will be pitching in to plant seedlings, while

Telstar’s “G.O.T. Farms?” service-learning project is working to manufacture signage for educational purposes and to indicate when different produce will be ready for harvest. Right now “EMS” is sourcing funds to pay for mulch, fill, materials to build soil containers, more plants and the other supplies needed to continue making this project a success. A couple of grant applications, if successful, would bring in a much needed $1,500 -- while an anonymous donor has bestowed the

8

wood needed to craft the planters. Come summer, people looking for fresh food can pick from Amanda’s garden in exchange for a donation to the Bethel Food Pantry -- the recipient last season of carloads full of harvested goods. Other inspiring offshoots from this amazing project? Last fall The Rotary Club of Bethel set up an exchange table where local folks and farmers could trade out their surplus vegetables to efficiently distribute the excess. Late in the season, Melanie Carver reached out to the Swain Family Farm and was able to rescue hundreds of pounds of fresh ripe pumpkins that were going to be turned out onto the fields as compost. Next fall, Melanie will coordinate with more farms and arrange for transportation of these healthy foods back to the Bethel Food Pantry. These green grass-roots efforts show our community at it’s best. Keep an eye on the EdibleBethel.com website as it expands to show a listing of all of the businesses on Main Street and throughout the village of Bethel that will be participating -- then get involved just for the fun of it! Anna Sysko’s

Greenhouse & Gardens

When you live on a homestead that spreads across the shoulder of a spot called Puzzle Mountain there are a lot of pieces to keep track of. Sorry, couldn’t resist . . . but when Anna Sysko starts talking about all the crops and voles, livestock and baked goods, books and plants, fish and Air B&B and hydropower and WWOOF and Olympia and all the other things that occupy her time, it is clear that she has a lot of moving parts to keep organized. Let’s start with Olympia, the largest snow-women the world has ever seen, standing 122 feet 1 inch tall and weighing more than 9,000,000 pounds. Creating that behemoth was a challenge that Anna’s father, Jim Sysko (a local character and engineer), took on in the winter of 2008 right here in Bethel. So, of course, Anna knew just who to go to for help when she decided to construct a large greenhouse based on the principles laid out in Solviva, a book by Anna Edey about sustainable Solar-Dynamic Bio-Benign design. The hydroelectric system adds 30 kilowatts to the grid, so clearly the next step was to grow enough food year round, including fish, to sell back to the community. The 32’x48’ greenhouse, constructed with a unique 56° angle on the front face of glass, is perfect for letting the January sun come right through onto the 5 forty-foot long growing beds. Tomato vines snake up into the rafters, greens grow on the bases along with sweet potatoes, artichokes, table and cooking greens, and lots of flowers to attract beneficial insects and pollinators. There are knee-wall windows with louvered tops to release air that gets too hot. With white coverings over the long tables, Anna can change the climate for each row to a warmer zone, protecting precious new growth. Although the sun provides plenty of heat, temperature regulation is trickiest in the fall and spring, as daily temperatures vary so much. Fortunately, many greens have natural anti-freeze, allowing plants like lettuces, spinach, cilantro, kale and brussels sprouts to freeze and thaw without excessive damage. But hold on, what about those fish? Anna and Jim are currently looking for an aquarium specialist to assist with the back glass wall that was built to accommodate an aquaculture facility within the greenhouse. They need some help getting the wall to hold water in order to

handle the fish they plan on raising for food while recycling the wastewater as a super charged fertilizer for feeding and watering the plants. Wow! But wait, there’s more. The farm also raises pigs, chickens, goats and sheep. There is a shed to butcher some of the livestock and a smokehouse for further processing. Anna keeps bees and has extensive gardens outside during the summer. Specializing in salad and grazing greens, parsley, dill and cilantro -- Anna sells her produce through the local farmer’s market, through Boondocks (a small local buying cooperative), and to more than 30 “Pick-toOrder” customers that she supplies with regular deliveries. How does she do it all? Well, sometimes workers arrive through WWOOF (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms) an international organization matching organic farmers with people who want to work on organic farms. The Puzzle Mountain homestead provides room and board, the volunteers provide work power. There is also a beautiful little 100 year old cabin on the side of their hydro pond that is rented out through Air B&B, providing solitude as well as inspiration to those who dream of creating their own homestead. That’s enough to keep most people busy, but Anna also holds down a job in town at Di’Cocoa’s as the pastry baker for the market and cafe where she keeps the shelves loaded with treats and the coolers loaded with fresh greens. Moles and voles, freezing temperatures and other challenges make every day a new one at Anna’s farm, but with the help of her family the place just keeps on growing and prospering. Keep an eye on this one - she has a lot going on! To learn more about Anna, email her at annasysko@gmail. com. Bethel LIVING | BethelLiving.com

Norway’s Weekend Music Scene

Tucker’s Pub About this time of year as the days sidle slowly into extended twilight hours and snowbanks along the streets peak -- then begin to recede -- many residents feel a bit . . . hemmed in, a tad . . . stifled. Well, the clinicians at Bethel Living have seen ‘Valley Fever’ before and we know just the medicine to lift that late season lassitude. Road trip! After repeatedly hearing about the rejuvenation underway in Downtown Norway and tales of a low profile speakeasy in the back of a print shop there, BL decided to go investigate. What we found will brighten up your world! Norway, Maine has worked hard to create a bustling Main Street colonized by unique, locally owned shops, restaurants and businesses housed in architecturally significant buildings from the early 1900s. Strolling the refurbished area on a Friday afternoon will keep you entertained while you wait for Creative Media -- the go-to place in town for printing, copying, invoices and posters -- to close up for the weekend. Anne Mallory and her son Jacob run the copy business at 290 Main Street from Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Except on Fridays when, at 4pm, they shut down the printing machines and fire up the food and music machines -- transforming their dayto-day work space into Tucker’s Pub. When Anne and her husband Al, a carpenter and musician, leased the building they saw an opportunity to create their dream: a place they could remodel to serve two functions. On weekend evenings from 7 ‘til midnight the copy shop converts into a pub with a stage dedicated to local entertainment. Friday is Jam Night, with friends and folks getting up on stage to 14

Bethel LIVING | BethelLiving.com

play freely together. Saturday night features hired entertainment -- always local -with familiar names like Denny Breau, the Milltown Roadshow, Carlos Angeles, Shawn McCole, Dan Stevens, Brad Hooper, Lindsay Montana and the Intergalactic Yurt Band. Tucker’s offers a crazy selection of over fifty beers and more than twenty varieties of wine, all served from the bottle since beer taps would make the weekday workshop smell like a Rathskeller. In order to sell beer and wine they also have to offer food, so the back printing room converted into a kitchen where Anne produces all your pub grub favorites from scratch, including nachos, chili, Buffalo wings, salads, quesadillas, wraps and grilled cheese. The Pub, now in it’s 4th year, provides Al a place to play his guitar and bass while he sings with a Bunch of Old Hippies -- a revolving group that might include Nate Town, Bob Wallace, Rusty Wiltjer, Paul Dube, Tom Zicarelli and Davy Sturdevant. Whoever shows up on a given night, you can be sure to hear a lot of classic rock and roll as well as blues, folk, country and jazz. Al and Anne take pride in what they have created -- a low-key, relaxed atmosphere with couches, free coffee and mellow friends -- and little of the rowdiness that some of the area’s ski bars thrive on. Folks come to Tucker’s mostly for the music. The bar can hold up to 70 customers and there’s never a cover charge -- but bring cash because no credit cards are accepted. The Mallory’s absolutely love the scene at their dual purpose establishment, and we think you will love it too! Creative Media and Tucker’s Pub is located at 290 Main Street in Norway. Check them out on facebook/tuckerspub, visit creativemediaofmaine.com, or call 207-739-2200 for more information.

By the 1960’s those gallons represented some of the most polluted river water in the United States, a blot on our region that helped drive the passage of the Clean Water Act in 1972. It was not, however, until the last of the pulp and paper mills located in Berlin, New Hampshire closed in 2005 that the condition of the Upper Andro (essentially the river waters above Rumford) began to show substantial improvement. Today, the waters run clearer and fish are abundant. Bethel LIVING | BethelLiving.com

The

Honor

of the Brave Flag

Except for the attacks on Pearl Harbor and the World Trade Center, a century and a half has passed since significant hostilities -- a war -- was last waged within the borders of the United States. Yet scars from the American Civil War remain a fading affliction to this day. Conflict, aggression and violence extract a human toll requiring much greater effort to heal than the original effort expended in creating the wreckage. When Donna Sheerin Gillis, owner of Pat’s Pizza in Bethel, conceived a healing quilt dedicated to American service veterans she decided to incorporate large pockets around the border for 21 of the wars, and interventions in which the United States has engaged. The deep pockets hold notebooks where folks can enter names, dates and locations relating to each conflict. The overall design is based on the American flag -but this enormous version (measuring 6’10” x 5’7”!) has 167 pockets of all sizes to hold cards, dog tags, medals and photos. One corner is boldly decorated with a proud eagle while the dove of peace reigns opposite. For Donna, the healing abilities of a written tribute are a certainty. Her creation

is currently on display at Pat’s Pizza -- it’s blank cards and empty notebooks awaiting contributions. As they view the quilt, visitors can leave a message to, or about, a friend or family member involved in war -- whether two weeks, two decades or two centuries have elapsed -- adding info and content to the flag in an ongoing process. As remembrances accumulate, scrapbooks and photo albums will be assembled and placed in the pockets. Eventually, the flag will travel to veteran’s homes and hospitals as a living memorial, and to schools and historical societies as an educational tool dedicated to the power of healing. The flag was featured at the Veteran’s Home in South Paris on November 7th, 2014, and for the Veterans without Borders Program at the Legion Hall in Bryant Pond and will be appearing at a church in Rye, New Hampshire during Memorial Day Weekend. Donna hopes to make some special plans for the quilt for July 4th. The Honor of the Brave Flag is just beginning its journey -- which could take it almost anywhere. Notes already placed in the pockets include a message from Ilene “Hendo” Henderson who recently hiked the Appalachian Trail after two deployments in Iraq. There is a card for Donna’s father and a poem written by a 16-year-old in response to 9-11 just after it happened. The quilt is a powerful tribute and Donna hopes it adds a bit of healing to a world devastated by too much sorrow. She has included her own hidden message, stitching a phrase into the upper and bottom portions of the quilt –- it is visible, but you’ll need to look for it: “To all the men and women who have served and are serving this great country, for baring the scars of war, you are all heroes”. The quilt is a vehicle to heal and educate; a place for anger, for love and for acknowledgement. Donna extends a welcome to all -- come by, leave mementos in the pockets and stories in the books, provide a history for future generations and honor the brave. Bethel LIVING | BethelLiving.com
