TO BENEFIT BRYN MAWR HOSPITAL by Laurie Wightman
O
ne of the most fascinating aspects of the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair is the volunteer work that goes into this two week event to solely benefit Bryn Mawr Hospital. To date the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair has over 2,000 volunteers who dedicate a large portion of their time to make this annual event more magnificent than the year before. The generations of families that have been involved in Devon are truly one of the most remarkable elements to what goes on during this event. The rich history and tradition of passing down the values of volunteering at Devon has been engrained in so many families’ lives. The children start at the sweet age of 12 and are able to understand the benefits of volunteer work, and how gratifying it can be to give back to a charity that does so much for Bryn Mawr Hospital.
Each year Devon becomes a second home to so many people, and all the volunteers become a second family during the 11-day event. The numerous committees that are put together to make the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair a splendid event is most impressive. These committees are the backbones to the entire event and assure that each WayneMagazine.com | May 2017

BRYN MAWR HOSPITAL THANKS THE DEVON HORSE SHOW AND COUNTRY FAIR.
L to R: Richard O’Donnell, president, Devon Horse Show and Country Fair; Andrew M. Reder, chair, Bryn Mawr Hospital Foundation; Beth Wright and Karin Maynard, co-chairs, 2016 Devon Country Fair; Andi Gilbert, president, Bryn Mawr Hospital; and Wayne W. Grafton, chairman, Devon Horse Show and Country Fair, during the annual Devon Horse Show and Country Fair check presentation and reception at Bryn Mawr Hospital in December 2016. The ceremonial check represents a $430,000 payment on the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair’s $2 million pledge to the hospital’s For Every Generation capital campaign.
Bryn Mawr Hospital is honored to have a longstanding relationship, one that spans nearly a century, with the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair. In 2019, Bryn Mawr Hospital will open a seven-story Patient Pavilion, with new operating rooms, neonatal intensive care unit, maternity, and labor and delivery units, in addition to a state-of-the-art critical care unit made possible by the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair. The hospital is grateful to the Devon team for its role in this unprecedented part of Bryn Mawr Hospital history.

year everything goes off without a hitch. The list of committee volunteers is rather extensive, but to list a few: Sponsorships, Ladies’ Day, First Night at Devon, History of Devon, Souvenirs, Tea Cart, Hamburgers/ Hot Dogs, Garden Café, Candy, Concessions, Mid-Way, Information, Operations, Flowers, Concessions...etc. The volunteers put their heart and soul into everything they do at Devon. They enjoy themselves immensely while maintaining a positive attitude with a continual smile on their faces. The importance of giving back to any charity is more prevalent than ever. At Devon many volunteers are getting older, and the need for the next generation to step in and take over is vital to the growth of the charity and its
efforts to continue raising money for Bryn Mawr Hospital each and every year. To date, over $15 million has been donated to support various projects throughout Bryn Mawr Hospital. In 2014, a $2 million, 5-year pledge was made to support Bryn Mawr Hospital’s Modernization project. The Devon Horse Show and Country Fair was proud to present the third installment of that pledge on December 4th, 2016 in the amount of $430,000. The Devon Horse Show and Country Fair has created so much opportunity for not only Bryn Mawr Hospital, but also for the generous volunteers that dedicate their time and effort to make this the wonderful event that it is. Let’s keep the tradition and values of giving back alive by continuing to educate the younger generations on the importance of charitable efforts and how volunteer work can truly be one of the most gratifying elements in life. After all, there is a reason why Devon volunteers continue to come back year after year. Perhaps it is like coming home to nothing they’ve ever known before.

devon horse show Behind the Scenes of the Back Barn Tours • Q&A When did the Back Barn Tours begin here at Devon? The Back Barn tours started in 2003, and has really grown into quite an interesting event through the years during the Devon Horse Show & Country Fair.
What is behind these Back Barn Tours exactly? Oh, lots of things! It’s a really fun tour for anyone and at any age. We talk about the history of the barns, and the history of the Devon Horse Show. We show our guests a variety of horses in the stalls that they get to acquaint themselves with. This year we will have Saddlebreds, Hackneys, Coach Horses and the big surprise are the Budweiser Clydesdales! What a treat it will be to have the opportunity to see them up close and personal.
What day/times will the tours be held, and where do people meet? The Back Barn tours are FREE, and will be happening from 3PM-6PM on Tuesday, May 30th. You really can’t go wrong with coming along for a tour. There is no need to register. You simply meet at the Picnic Grove pavilion and look for the blue Devon Pony. It’s a unique experience that everyone must try at least once.
What is new and exciting behind the Back Barn this year? It is an honor to have the Clydesdales with us this year. I think that will be an exciting addition to the Back Barn tour that everyone will want to be a part of, and it certainly
w’s back barn tours with Lisa Estabrook, Co-Chair of the Country Fair doesn’t happen every year. We also have a stunning Brewster private red coach from 1880 which will be a part of the tour. This is a real delight as this Brewster coach is a rare gem. It is owned by Bill Venditta, and the coachman is John Stewart, Jr. This particular coach used to travel back and forth from New York City to Tarrytown in the late 1800s, and now it’s at Devon! Lastly, we have one of our board members, Janet Crawford Hicks, who will have some of her world class champion Hackney Ponies. She and her husband, Rodney Hicks, who trains these world champion ponies, are thrilled to have their Hackneys as a part of this tour. She will be handing out a little surprise to people who attend the tour.
What is a fun fact that you tend to share during the tour? We have 476 stalls on the grounds of Devon. We have 384 stalls across the street. That is a rather substantial amount of stalls that we board during the Devon Horse Show & Country Fair.
Why should everyone take the opportunity to go on a Back Barn tour? Because it’s a different experience to enjoy while at Devon. It’s a moment to get the inside perspective of what goes on in the stalls and learn more about the various horses. We have so many fun facts that we share along the way to make this tour an informative and inspiring experience for all who attend. Oh and did I mention that it’s free and open to all ages? The Back Barn tour is simply a must at Devon.

Among the judges of the Hat Contest this year is Hillary Dobbs, a bit of a celebrity in her own right amongst the equestrian world. We welcome Hilary back to Devon, along with celebrity guest judge Carson Kressley, television personality and fashion designer, who will be autographing copies of his new book, Does This Book Make My Butt Look Big?: A Cheeky Guide to Feeling Sexier in Your Own Skin & Unleashing Your Personal Style. the clydesdales
…HAVE ARRIVED
by Laurie Wightman
I
t is with great enthusiasm that the famous Budweiser Clydesdales will return to the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair this year. Many attendants anticipate their arrival in the Dixon Oval as the incredibly matched 8 horse hitch and vintage brewery wagon make their grand entrance to greet the crowds. Mark your calendars for Friday, June 2nd and Saturday, June 3rd for the “gentle giants” grand entrance. You will not want to miss this spectacular moment when you hear the echoes of the hoofs arriving at the gates.
Some fun facts from Anheuser-Busch on the Budweiser Clydesdales: The Clydesdale Breed: Farmers living in the 19th century along the banks of the River Clyde in Lanarkshire, Scotland, bred the Great Flemish Horse, the forerunner of the Clydesdale. These first draft horses pulled loads of more than 1 ton at a walking speed of five miles per hour. Soon their reputation spread beyond the Scottish borders. In the mid-1800s, Canadians of Scottish descent brought the first Clydesdales to the United States, where the draft horses resumed their existence on farms. Today, the Clydesdales are used primarily for breeding and show. Hitch Requirements: To qualify for one of the traveling hitches, a Budweiser Clydesdale must be a gelding at least four years of age, stand 72 inches at the shoulder when fully mature, weigh between 1,800 and 2,300 pounds, have a bay coat, four white legs, a white blaze, and a black mane and tail.

Names: Duke, Captain, Mark, and Bud are just a few of the names given to the Budweiser Clydesdales. Names are kept short to make it easier for the driver to give commands to the horses during a performance. Horseshoes: Clydesdale horseshoes measure more than 20 inches from end to end and weigh about 5 pounds, which is more than twice as long and five times as heavy as the shoe worn by a light horse. A horse’s hoof is made of a nerveless, horn-like substance similar to the human fingernail so being fitted for shoes affects the animal no more than a manicure affects people.
The beautiful Budweiser Clydesdales will be boarding on the grounds from May 22nd– June 6th. You will have more opportunities to see them during the Back Barn tours. Be sure to schedule your tour now and have a more intimate engagement with these incredibly unique horses.

arena eventing COMING TO DEVON
Information by: Morgan Appleyard – BTC Marketing & The Devon Horse Show
F
or a truly unique equestrian experience, the Devon Horse Show is offering a new class known as “Arena Eventing.” Scheduled for Sunday, May 28th at 7PM, Devon’s $50,000 Arena Eventing Class, presented by Mid-Atlantic Packaging, will be the first in the show’s history and only the fourth of its kind in the world. Some of the country’s most-skilled horse and rider teams will compete in this elite class, which combines the technical challenges of cross-country riding with the speed and thrill of show jumping. The course will require competitors to navigate 25 jumps between the Dixon Oval and Gold Ring, harkening back to Devon’s early days when the show featured an outside course and competitors had to jump into the Dixon Oval to compete. “Devon needs to

constantly re-energize,” said Wayne W. Grafton, Devon Horse Show Chairman. “Arena eventing is an interesting and challenging class that attracts a younger group looking to get into equestrian sports.” There are only four other major horse shows in the world that have developed these special competitions. Those shows are the Wellington Horse Show, Stuttgart Horse Show, The Royal International in England and The Royal Horse Show in Toronto. Now the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair are among these other elite world-class shows that will be bringing Arena Eventing right here in the Dixon Oval. Devon Arena Eventing will meet the highest standards and is supported by top riders from the eventing side such as Captain Mark Phillips, David O’Connor – the current coach of the US eventing team – and Rio Olympians Phillip Dutton and Boyd Martin. The course was designed by Captain Mark Phillips, Olympic gold medalist, former coach of the US Olympic eventing team and renowned international course designer. Mark spent several hours at Devon evaluating the facilities and believes they offer an excellent venue for arena eventing. This is an event not to be missed, and one that is a true feather in the caps of the Devon Horse Show.

ne of the most sought-after national juried festival competitions of plein-air landscape paintings, hosted by the Wayne Art Center, took place from May 8th-13th as artists painted in the Delaware Valley. The 11th Annual Wayne Plein Air Festival features 32 nationally distinguished artists who created 250+ landscapes that will be available for the duration of the exhibition through June 24th, 2017. The Wayne Plein Air Festival is an exciting opportunity to bring valued talent to our community. Many of the artists come from other regions stretching up and down the East Coast, Midwest and West.
Artists arrived with blank canvases at the opening evening of the festival at a beautiful farm in the area. Their canvases were stamped to ensure that all work was completely executed during the festival. They were ready to begin the challenge of executing a brand new body of work in just 6 days, which followed by having their canvases hung in the Wayne Art Center’s state-of-the-art Davenport and Vidinghoff Galleries. Festival artists were directed to paint within 25 miles of Wayne during the first four days of the competition. A combination of pastoral scenes from nearby rural areas and parks, as well as quaint scenes from historic Main Line neighborhoods, make for a pleasing variety of works that reflect the character of our area. In their final two days, the painters ventured to Valley Forge Park and Philadelphia to capture notable downtown scenes, and the central spot of Wayne for artists and community participants to paint on the final day of the festival.
