This magazine’s intention is to always bring you back to a time when supporting and connecting with your fellow neighbors, businesses and organizations was what living in an American town was all about. In a time when main street communities are becoming less prevalent, it is more important than ever to come together on a local level and truly preserve the essence of what small-town America was built on. Let’s continue to keep this at the forefront of our thoughts this fall season as we enjoy all that Wayne has to offer. As always, I invite you to contact me with any ideas and/or suggestions for future issues. After all, this magazine was created for you! Sincerely,

eet Gracie, the 8-month-old English Bulldog who takes the yoga term “Down Dog” into a very literal state. Gracie is most commonly recognized as the official mascot of Bulldog Yoga, located down the road in Villanova. Two weeks before Bulldog Yoga opened their doors, Katy Conicella – owner of Gracie and GM of the studio, decided the studio needed a proper mascot. She eagerly sought out a few breeders and landed with D&D bulldogs where they had two female bulldog puppies ready to go. Katy excitedly hopped in her car to meet her fate of the adorable Gracie whom she fell in love with at first sight. Gracie transitioned into her role at Bulldog Yoga seamlessly, and has truly been a working gal since day one. It’s a tough job to greet guests each day, pose for photos and give cuddles to the staff and clients, but someone has got to do it and this social pup is the right bulldog for the job. With her inviting social skills, infamous fanny wiggle and beaming smile you will always be greeted in the warmest way. But don’t let Gracie’s positive attributes fool you into thinking that she doesn’t have a devilish side to her as well. This puppy has a thing for yoga blocks, and if one is in her sight watch out folks as she’ll attempt to eat it on the spot. She also enjoys trying to open the doors into the studios while a yoga class is in session, and even more interestingly is when she hears the applause at the end of a class and bolts in to try and steal the show. What can you say…this little ham loves to be in the limelight from time to time. English Bulldogs are known for their gentle and affectionate demeanor. This couldn’t be more true for little Gracie who wants nothing more than to lovingly greet each person who walks through the doors of Bulldog Yoga. Stop on by, take a yoga class and be ready to have one heck of a warm welcome by this adorable mascot.

ANTIQUITIES, ETC. AND BALEE ANTIQUES by Laurie Wightman

A

long the Main Line there are a handful of antique shops sprinkled amongst the towns, each one telling a unique story. Some might say antiques are a thing of the past, and if you look at it quite literally they are exactly that. But to suggest that the value and/or interest in antiques has declined‌ well, now that is a thing of the past. In more recent years people are re-discovering the tremendous value in owning or collecting unique antiques to fill their homes and lives. Younger generations have hopped on board and are recognizing the importance in owning top quality furniture, accent pieces and accessories. There is a resurgence in the antique world that is happening right here in Wayne. Perhaps it is due to the two best antique shops in the Philadelphia tri-state area, Antiquities, etc. and Balee Antiques, being located in our beloved community of Wayne. Here is a closer look into what these two fabulous women are doing these days in their remarkable yet very distinctive antique shops.

ANTIQUITIES, ETC. Owner: Marietta Faragalli Marietta Faragalli opened Antiquities, located at 122 W. Lancaster Ave., over 10 years ago. She had already been in the antique business for 15 years prior to her store opening. The primary focus of Antiquities is in 19th century English antiques with some 18th and 20th century pieces, specializing in furniture, accessories and accent pieces. She has been traveling to England on buying trips for the last 20 years where she has developed some wonderful sources. “I purchase primarily in England because I have an affinity for the English look and have developed great contacts there over the years,” says Marietta. “Although I am a traditionalist, I don’t think antiques need to be stuffy. My over-riding concern in what I buy is visual appeal, not age. I do believe in keeping up with decorating trends and I buy accordingly.”

MOST INTERESTING ITEM FOUND IN ENGLAND: Probably one of the most interesting items I’ve found in England is a tabernacle saved from a French Catholic Church during WW2. It had been removed to a private home and used to say mass when their churches were being bombed. Inside we found a letter.....in French of course, from the local priest explaining why the tabernacle had been removed and then painted to disguise it. Under the flaking blue paint it was gold leafed. The first of our customers to see it bought it immediately and had a niche built into a wall in her house to hold it.

MOST FAVORITE PART OF BEING AN ANTIQUE DEALER: All antique dealers love the thrill of the hunt; finding something special, exceptional or the best of its kind. I particularly enjoy arranging and displaying my purchases to the best advantage. Over the years, I have most come to appreciate the personal relationships we have developed with our customers and with the friends we have made in England.

UNIQUE ITEMS CARRIED IN ANTIQUITIES TODAY: It’s hard to be specific, but I always look for beautiful, exceptional things in wonderful condition. To me condition is the most important thing besides attractiveness, and usefulness. The tortoise shell bureau jars in my store are an example of the importance of condition. If they are not in good condition they have little value. Also, the straw animal heads I have in-store presently are not antique, but are interesting, unusual and quirky. I like the surprise of something not precious mixed with finer things.

BALEE ANTIQUES Owner: Rita Balee Rita Balee has been in the antique business for the last 25 years, and her expertise is truly reflected through the one-of-a-kind unique pieces that fill three floors of the antique storefront named Balee Antiques, located in the Eagle Village Shops. Today, you can walk into Balee Antiques and see an incredible variety of European antiques from the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries, mixed in with Asian accents and stunning jewelry. Rita prefers to show her clients ways to incorporate unusual items into their rooms that will enhance other key objects of furniture. “I try to buy pieces that are eclectic and whimsical. Things that will really stand out and enhance a room in a client’s home,” said Rita. “I like being unpredictable and having that reflect in the inventory I offer to my customers. The world has changed in retail and in antiques. You have to learn to change with it in order to stay relevant in the marketplace and for your clients.” WayneMagazine.com | September/October 2016

BEST ANTIQUE FIND OVER THE YEARS: A 17th century Japanese tapestry of monkeys that displayed “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil.” It was probably about 8 ft x 4 ft, and looked like a beautiful painting that was so finely embroidered you had never seen anything like it before.

MOST FAVORITE PLACE TO FIND ANTIQUES: These days I would probably say Atlanta. A lot of dealers still go to Europe to buy, they then bring the antiques back on containers and I get to visit Atlanta to buy from these dealers and antiques in their warehouses. They will only sell to the trade. I’ve found a lot of fun and interesting things there. They tend to get a large amount of continental furniture, unique items and one-of-a-kind pieces. It’s a great place to go find that whimsical and rare thing that you won’t find anywhere else.

OTHER SERVICES YOU PROVIDE: I like to do design work, and have been doing interior design services for years. More recently, I have enjoyed helping young couples pull their homes together. People who have purchased their first home and want someone to give them some extra attention and direction. I’ve been leaning towards that design work these days, which has been great fun.

GARDEN

Fall is the perfect season to visualize what your garden will look like during the upcoming colder winter months. Stand at your favorite window, use it as a frame and think about what you would like to add to the picture for fall and winter enjoyment. Select a sculpture or statuary to coordinate with evergreen plantings that may serve as a backdrop for colder months ahead. If you are interested in planting mums that will have the best chance of returning as perennials, be sure to select Hardy or Garden Mums from a reputable nursery. Purchase them as soon as they appear in your local center, preferably with as many buds as possible vs. flowers, and plant them as early as September to give them maximum amount of time to set roots and enjoy the flowers longer. Asters are a favorite fall blooming perennial that are sure to please in September and October. Visit your local nursery and choose native asters or other perennial aster options. Have fun mixing and matching the various colors and foliage textures. Incorporate them into your garden for yearly enjoyment. Choose larger winter hardy planters that can accommodate both your favorite dwarf evergreen’s root ball and foliage, as well as other seasonal holiday plants, greens and decorations (pumpkins, gourds, berry branch cuttings, etc) that might be added during the Fall and Winter. Fountain features in materials such as bronze, aluminum, lead or iron can remain as focal points and will not require fountain covers during the winter months. After draining your water feature before the first hard frost and winterizing the fountain basin, your sculptural fountain feature can remain and provide enjoyment and interest until spring returns. reveals the secret to a MEGA Main Line workout Congratulations on being voted the best Pilates Studio by Philly.com! How does that make you feel, and how long has Plank Studio been in business here in Wayne?

Thank you so much! We are BEYOND thrilled with the continued support from Philadelphia and our community. After just two years in business, receiving another accolade like this keeps us motivated to continue to provide successful and innovative workout routines with our MegaFormer! Which as you know, is currently only available at Plank in Wayne, on the Main Line! Can you tell us what really distinguishes Plank Studio from other Pilates studios? The workout has been quoted as “Pilates on Crack” or “Pilates on Steroids” and we couldn’t agree more. The difference from a traditional Pilates reformer class is that we’ve amped it up - Big Time! Every class is programmed differently so you’re guaranteed to never do the same routine twice. Our certified instructors take you through a 50 Minute series of exercises focusing on core, abs, arms and legs. It’s really the resistance training you receive from our unique machine that focuses on developing a strong core which sets us apart from other workouts. What is the MegaFormer all about, and what are the added benefits to using this machine over others? In our 10 person signature MegaFormer class, each client has their own machine. The benefit of our workout is the intense core focus we are able to devote to clients in each and every exercise. Many of our clients find they suffer from a lack of core support which can in the long term cause lower back pain and joint discomfort. Our entire workout is devoted to resistance based training so we’re able to provide a low impact and high cardio class each time. If a new client came to Plank, what would your recommended workout be here at the studio? When new clients join us we suggest at least 3 MegaFormer Classes per week for 3 weeks to see immediate results. Our MegaFormer machine can definitely be intimidating, it’s 250lbs and 10ft long, there are a lot of bells and whistles to contend with but we encourage clients to stick with it because after the first 2-3 times they’ll be pros! What’s the best part about Plank? I know I’m partial to say this, but the best part about our studio is our clients! They’ve become family to our instructors. We laugh constantly, even through the intensity. Changing lives through fitness and health with our Megas has truly been an incredible experience for us!

dr. lindsey marshall:

MAIN LINE’S MOST TRUSTED DENTIST by Laurie Wightman WM: Dr. Lindsey Marshall, you have an exceptional dental practice located here on the Main Line. How long have you been in practice as a dentist, and what is your background in your profession? LM: I am actually really excited to share that in 2018, I am celebrating my 20th Anniversary for my cosmetic dental practice in Ardmore, PA. I grew up on the Main Line and attended The Agnes Irwin School, so it has been incredibly rewarding to return to the Main Line to start my practice. It’s also meaningful to reconnect with those I knew growing up, and who like myself are raising families and building businesses in the area. In terms of my education I graduated cum laude from The Harvard School of Dental Medicine, which was an incredible experience. To expand upon that program, I continue to study the most advanced technologies in neuromuscular and cosmetic dentistry through my ongoing post-graduate work at the prestigious Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies, qualifying me rare certification in the most expert dental services worldwide. WM: What would you say best distinguishes you and your dental practice from others in the area? LM: My education and training. Since graduating dental school I have taken advantage of all of the continuing education available to maintain my expertise, the skills of my team and of course to learn WayneMagazine.com | September/October 2016

27

BENEFITS

about all of the latest technologies. Part of offering excellent cosmetic dentistry is using the most advanced dental technology. I have chosen top-quality equipment for my patients’ comfort and health. • Digital X-rays expose my patients to far less radiation than traditional X-rays, and they provide immediate images on the chair side monitor that my patient and I may examine and discuss. • An intraoral camera also provides instant images on the monitor, enabling us to provide patient copies for their very own “Before & After” gallery. • The DIAGNOdent system enables me to detect decay in a very early stage, so that maximum healthy tooth tissue can be preserved by prompt treatment. • For relatively small areas of decay, we use a laser instead of a drill, as it is quiet, safe, efficient, and reduces discomfort. • I also use the Wand, a computer-controlled system for administering local anesthetic that minimizes the stress and discomfort patients might otherwise feel when the treatment area is made numb. • T scan, a digital scan for checking and optimizing a patient’s bite after placing restorations, also helps in equilibrations for neuromuscular care. • CBCT scanner for the lowest radiation dose of digital 3D images for cavity detection as well as tooth and root fractures and evaluation of the TMJ. • Nucalm, a patented system that is revolutionizing the patient experience by naturally relaxing the mind and body within minutes − providing a relaxed and comfortable clinical experience for patients.

In terms of Preventative Care, I believe PREVENTION is always better than treatment. I strive to be a gentle dentist and a good listener, and always take the time to fully inform my patients of what needs to be done and how it can best be accomplished. Most people who come to our office say they have never had a teeth cleaning like our office before! WM: Many people suffer from anxiety when it comes to going to a dentist. What is your best approach to help alleviate that stress for clients? DM: First we find that understanding all you need from the treatment perspective helps ease anxiety. When people have not been to the dentist for some time they are often concerned about the unknown, how many cavities do I have, how much will it cost, how many appointments will it take? We begin with a thorough diagnostic visit where we can clearly outline exactly what treatment is needed, how much it will cost and how many appointments it will take. Secondly, we offer many things to ease discomfort during the visit which for many are the typical sights, smells and sounds of a dental office. We have delicious candles always burning so we do not have the “dental office” smell when you arrive. We have headphones for all visits whether you are having a simple cleaning or major restorative work. You can listen and watch television or movies or your favorite music to distract you from the visit.

WayneMagazine.com | September/October 2016

WM: What are the services you are most highly recognized for? LM: Cosmetic dentistry is restorative dentistry of the highest quality and all of our procedures are ultimately designed to brighten and straighten your smile. With each patient, we design a custom cosmetic dentistry procedure and implement them according to their schedule and convenience. Some of the most popular procedures we might recommend include: • Porcelain veneers • Full Mouth Rejuvenation • Upgrading old dentistry to new all porcelain or composite restorations • Gum re-contouring where we use a soft tissue laser to gently remove excess gum tissue sculpting each tooth’s crown to ensure our patients’ smile has a beautiful balance.

WM: What kind of experience would you like your clients to have at Lindsey Marshall DMD? LM: One like they have never had before. I want to change what people think of going to the dentist. We are mouth doctors not teeth doctors and I want guests in my office to become aware of what is happening in their mouths. Regardless of how routine or complex your dental needs may be, we offer knowledgeable and fully customized care that begins with the first point of contact where someone will readily provide you all the information you need to begin care in our office. Following our initial consultation, we will design a plan for the care recommended and our guests can decide what and how they would like to proceed with their care. With everything planned in advance, we can create seamless treatment visits where my team and I are ready to provide guests the best care we can and they can relax and focus on a great experience.
