editor’s letter JUNE 2016
Summertime has come around once again and is sprinkling all of its glory onto Wayne as it always does. The summer months around Wayne are some of the most special moments as families head out to their vacation homes down the shore or in New England, and the rest of us are here to enjoy a slower pace of life for a few months. There is a sense of lightness in the air with long summer evenings that seem to go on forever. An innocence is re-instilled as children run around backyards chasing fireflies, while BBQ’s kick into full gear. Everyone seems to have a jovial spirit around town as they look forward to enjoying their summer vacations with family and friends. We hope most of you attended the Annual Wayne Music Festival in June and were able to enjoy yourselves! It was a perfect way to kick off the summer here in Wayne, and we would love to see photos of your good times. Remember to go to our Facebook page: Wayne Magazine – Wayne, PA to post memorable shots of things you will experience through these summer months. We would really like our Facebook page to become a community hub for locals to turn to and share in exciting times they have while here in Wayne.

In this special Summer Guide, we feature a key story on weddings and my personal experience of getting married on May 28th, and registering at the one and only Little House Shop. It truly was an exceptional experience working with the entire staff and making the process of getting married just a little bit easier. We also cover a story on a new business around town called Blue Truck – a full service business in the area to assist with anything the local residential homeowner may need help with. It is a business that was founded by local, Roby Burch, a senior at Gettysburg College. Don’t miss out on the Wayne Art Center’s Annual Student Exhibition this summer, as it is always a splendor seeing what local student artists create. I hope all of you are able to kick back as much as possible this season, and enjoy the bliss of endless days of summer. Sincerely,

dog of the month by Laurie Wightman
M
eet Wilson, a spunky Cocker Spaniel/King Charles Cavalier mix, who has graced the home of the Moyer family in Radnor. It was a long time coming for Sara Moyer and her family who had wanted a dog to be a part of their household for years upon years. The family collectively agreed it was time to bring on the newest member when they were on vacation in Jamaica, and made a dream become reality once they were back home. They initially attempted to go through rescue efforts to find their puppy but didn’t have luck in what they were searching for. Finally, over Thanksgiving weekend of 2014 they drove out to a breeder who had a farm in Western, PA. It was there that they came across the most adorable litter of Cockaliers, and there was no turning back. Jeff Moyer, Sara’s husband, had insisted that they have a male puppy as he was outnumbered by his wife and three daughters at home and needed a guy around the house! Wilson’s demeanor is incredibly sweet and lovable to everyone he meets. He is well trained to sleep through the nights in his crate, and never strays upstairs to sneak into bed with anyone. He patiently waits downstairs until the first member of the family comes down in the morning. But don’t be entirely fooled, as this cockalier has a rather devilish side to him when it comes to socks and bones. No pair of socks are safe in the Moyer household, as he can’t resist getting his paws on them at any given opportunity. As for bones, he loves hiding them under couches, beds, outside or even out in the open. Wilson’s favorite activity in life is to play fetch. He can’t get enough of it and will play wherever he has the chance. His most favorite place to play and get a little muddy would be at Skunk Hollow Park. Sometimes he enjoys himself too much and turns into the “Seamonster” which usually requires a stop at Dirty Dog for a bath before he goes home. Wilson’s warm heart and zesty spirit continually reminds the Moyer family not to take anything too seriously, because in the mind of Wilson every day is a good day to play some fetch. A WEDDING REGISTRY DELIGHT by Laurie Wightman
W
edding season is upon us and there are hundreds of brides buzzing around town with that magical glow of pre-wedding excitement as they anticipate their big day arriving just around the corner. I should know, I’m now wearing the post-wedding glow after getting married this past month on May 28th to my lovely new husband, Michael Wiley. When people told me to bask in the enjoyment of being engaged and planning a wedding, I strived to remain conscious of enjoying each week that led to our wedding. There were moments when I felt that the world was our oyster and everything was working in our favor. There were other moments when the planning process become a bit stressful and I would turn to Michael and ask him, “Why didn’t we choose to elope?” It’s a natural sensation to have as there are so many details to think about when planning the perfect wedding. But one woman told me, when that day comes you will be so happy that you worked hard to throw the wedding of your dreams. She couldn’t have been more right as we were another fortunate couple in the books to have had the most amazing wedding.
One aspect of being engaged that stood out to me the most, were people’s reactions when I would tell them I was engaged. I’ve discovered that there are few things in life where human beings collectively come together and share in a moment that makes them smile….that makes them feel happy for someone else…that makes them feel nostalgic in a positive way. Getting married and letting someone else know you are getting married are one of those moments. If I could have done anything differently during my 7 month engagement, it would have been to document all of the beautiful stories I heard along

the way from family, friends, clients and strangers who enjoyed sharing their own stories of when they got engaged and then married. The sparkle you see in someone’s eye or the smile that comes across one’s face as they recall their special day is magical in its own right. It truly warmed my heart to hear all the beautiful stories that others shared with me along the way. I hope in the next year I can go back and speak to many of these individuals to document their wonderful stories and publish a proper wedding issue next June that will weave so many magical experiences that others have had on their wedding day. Overall, I suppose I was a lucky bride when it came to planning our wedding. Things fell into place rather easily when it came to the venue we wanted, the caterer, the florist, the ceremony, music, décor, etc. There was one small surprise that I wasn’t expecting to be so overwhelming, and that was registering for our wedding! I realized I had absolutely no idea how to go about registering for what Michael and I may need and/or want for our new lives together. I knew there was only one place for me to turn to where they would put me at ease and create a fun and enjoyable experience all around. That enchanting place would be The Little House Shop right here in Wayne, located in The Eagle Village Shops. With a full staff of the most endearing and pleasant women greeting me at the door, it immediately put my nerves to rest. To put things simply, The Little House Shop is pure heaven for a bride. It is the best representation of what an independently owned business can offer a bride when registering, over going with national chains who lack thoughtfulness. The attention to detail and time spent with each bride to assure that they curate a registry that not only covers all bases, but covers them with the highest standard of elegance and quality products. I felt like a lost puppy at my first registry appointment, but with the help of Sam Ehlinger, she led me around the shop and guided me in directions I would never have thought of but were perfect for both Michael and myself. That’s what The Little House Shop does best - they learn who you are, what interests you, what your personal style is and then seek out the best possible products to represent your new life together.
Photos by Brenda Carpenter
The products and brands that The Little House Shop carries are all top notch quality items that are sure to last a lifetime. Some of the classic brands I chose to go with were Juliska, Simon Pearce, Mary Jurek, Nambe and Mariposa to name a few. These brands along with Rosenthal & Sambonet and Le Cadeaux fulfilled all my desires to create a beautiful home filled with stunning stemware, flatware, serving platters, barware and outdoor entertaining pieces. However, there is an endless variety of other brands and products to choose from at the charming Little House Shop. Rest assured, your head will not spin thanks to the incredible support from the bridal department that are always ready and willing to help you through every step of the process.

So when your moment comes to plan the wedding you’ve always dreamed of, I will give you the same advice passed on to me plus some. Bask in the bliss of planning your wedding, remember what is important to you and your future spouse, listen to as many lovely engagement and wedding stories as possible and definitely let The Little House Shop create the registry of your dreams. blue truck:
“NO DINGS. NO DENTS. NO PROBLEMS.” by Laurie Wightman
K
eep your eyes open around town this summer and you’ll be sure to spot something shiny, blue and new in a neighborhood near you. The Blue Truck is back this summer and better than ever. What is Blue Truck, you may ask? The answer to all of your home improvement and residential tasks that need to get done around the house but never do. If you had one person that you could turn to who would relieve you of all the duties you either don’t feel like taking on or don’t even know how to take on, what would you do? Never fear…Blue Truck is here! Roby Burch, owner of Blue Truck, founded his company when he was 16 years old here on the Main Line. Now, 21 years of age and a senior at Gettysburg College, Roby has transformed his summer gig into a full-time business servicing residents of the Main Line who may need help with anything from moving furniture, cleaning out basements to converting spaces into gyms or bringing your car in to get fixed, with everything in between. Blue Truck truly is a one-stop-shop on wheels that will get any job fixed or task taken care of with precision and professionalism. Roby discovered his talent for working on odd jobs during his summers growing up on a ranch in Montana. After receiving a $10,000 Entrepreneurial Fellowship Grant through his college for presenting a superior business plan on Blue Truck, Roby is determined to make his business a true success within our community. Blue Truck now has a complete crew of workers who are always professionally dressed in navy golf shirts and khaki pants, with a clean cut appearance to coincide with their dexterous experience which they offer to each and every client. So “Trust the Truck” as they say and give Roby Burch and his crew a call the next time you need help at home. The Blue Truck is just around the corner.

Heirloom Tart with Ricotta and Basil For the dough: • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour • 1/4 cup plus 2 tbsp. finely ground corn meal • 3/4 teaspoon salt • 1 stick plus 7 tbsp. chilled unsalted butter, grated on largest holes of box grater • 3 tablespoons ice water, plus more as needed For the filling: • 2 cups ricotta cheese • 2 cups grated Parmesan • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil • Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste • 1 1/2 lb heirloom tomatoes, sliced 1/4 inch thick • Salt, pepper, chopped basil and olive oil to garnish 1. To make tart dough: in the bowl of a food processor combine flour, corn meal and salt. Pulse briefly to combine. Add the butter and pulse 10 times until mixture resembles coarse meal. Add the 1/4-cup ice water and pulse 3 or 4 times. The dough should just hold together when squeezed with your fingers. Turn dough out onto a work surface and shape into a disk. Wrap with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or up to overnight. 2. Position a rack in the lower third of an oven and preheat to 400°F. On a lightly floured surface, roll out dough to fit a 10 inch round tart pan. Press dough into pan and trim, leaving a 1/2 inch overhang around the rim. Fold in excess dough and press it into sides so they are thicker than the bottom. Prick bottom of tart all over. Refrigerate for 30 minutes. 3. Place the chilled crust on a baking sheet and line the shell with a sheet of parchment followed by pie weights (these could be dried beans). Bake for 12 minutes, remove the parchment and weights and finish baking until the crust is a light golden brown, about 10 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack and let cool completely in the tart pan. 4. In a bowl, combine the ricotta, Parmesan and basil and season to taste with salt and pepper. Spread the mixture into the tart shell, then top with the tomato slices drizzle lightly with olive oil and sprinkle with salt, pepper and basil leaves.
