editor’s letter APRIL 2015 We’re in full bloom here in Wayne this April, and what a joy it is to see life re-emerging from every corner you turn this spring. After being hit with one last snow storm on the first day of spring, I think we are quite eager to welcome the sweet scents of budding flowers sprouting up all around town. This month in particular we have a much stronger appreciation for Mother Nature granting us with a vibrant and plush season ahead. In anticipation for greener pastures ahead, Wayne Magazine worked with a clever group of locals who plan one of the most exquisite tailgate parties at the Radnor Hunt each year. They call themselves the “Tack Roomers” and boy do they know how to throw a proper party! We were fortunate enough to have them share some of their best ideas on how to put out one heck of a spread. Additionally, last year many parents mentioned that we should cover a story on the best summer camps to consider for their children. We listened to our readers and present you with a snapshot of various camps that will be sure to get your kids excited for the summer months. We also feature a key story on one of the hippest cycling studios on the Main Line called Fluid Cycling. This studio brings the outdoor riding experience indoors and will take you riding through locations all over the world. It truly was one of the best workout experiences I have had to date.

M
eet Austin, a full-bred Yorkshire Terrier, born in the Blue Mountains of North Carolina. His namesake comes from his mom Megan Nogalski’s collective love of Austin, TX and the movie Austin Powers. To differentiate himself from his comedic British counterpart he prefers to be addressed as “Sir Austin.” He likes to believe that he is the guardian of his lovely castle in Wayne. This 13-year-old Yorkie has a zesty spirit despite a rare gastrointestinal disease and a hypothyroid that he was diagnosed with in the last five years. Austin has certainly defied any uncertain expectations by being a little fighter and bouncing back with great optimism to continue living a healthy life. When Megan was searching for a Yorkie she found a breeder in North Carolina who typically bred show dogs. The breeder was looking to sell two of the puppies due to them not developing the blue & tan “show dog” coat qualities. Megan and her parents went to visit the pups and fell in love with the all black puppy who became Sir Austin himself. Shortly after he turned one-year-old, Austin began to develop the typical blackish grey and tan coat that proper Yorkie’s are known for. It turned out he was simply a later bloomer! Austin has quite the personality and has made many friends throughout his life. He thoroughly enjoys sitting outside of Teresa’s Café greeting everyone in downtown Wayne, while his dad, Brian, manages the restaurant inside. His small size shouldn’t be taken lightly as Austin is very much a protector of his own turf. He sometimes needs to prove that he can’t be bullied around easily by other dogs, yet always has a tendency to come around and befriend his fellow mates. One of his best buddies is a German Shepard/Rottweiler mix. They make for a great pair! Austin has been one of the few consistencies in Megan’s life over the past 13 years as they have travelled and lived in various states together. Sir Austin is a perfect representation, big or small, as to why having a dog in one’s life can be the greatest gift of all. WayneMagazine.com | April 2015

adnor Township will be buzzing with activity this month as the 5 B’s come to town in a most delightful way. Several conservation minded organizations from the community are involved in supporting The 5 B’s exhibition and programming about birds, bees, butterflies, bats and bugs. Wayne Art Center has partnered with Audubon Pennsylvania and Radnor Bird Town to present an exhibition along with educational programs to honor these winged creatures. With the help of Radnor Memorial Library, Jenkins Arboretum & Gardens, Radnor Middle School and Radnor Conservancy nearly 30 events and programs of the 5 B’s will take place throughout the township and be made available to all who take an interest in the local environment as it pertains to the avian and insect world. These events and programs will run through May 9, 2015. Wayne Art Center will present an exhibition featuring works depicting birds, bees, butterflies, bats and bugs. The exhibition held in the Davenport Gallery will include ceramics, metal, jewelry, glass, fiber, wood, paintings, works on paper and photography. The works are for sale, and there will also be jurors, Perky Edgerton and Brian Meunier, who will select artwork and award winners. Radnor Bird Town and Audubon Pennsylvania will be offering informative lectures and demonstrations that will bring light to issues surrounding the winged and crawling creatures of our natural world that play a vital role in the health of our ecosystem. help create a culture of conservation where everyone is a potential steward of nature in his/her backyard and beyond. There will be weekly storytelling at Radnor Memorial Library for young children as well as themed art workshops and other hands-on activities to engage children of various ages at the Wayne Art Center, Radnor Memorial Library and Jenkins Arboretum & Gardens. Each of the 5 B’s will have a week dedicated to educational programs and events to be featured at the various locations and organizations in partnership with the exhibit.

The Radnor Hunt Races is a traditional event that brings over 20,000 fans to the grounds every year to join in on a day of steeplechasing in the open countryside of Radnor. In its 85th anniversary on May 16th, fans will come far and wide to gather along the beautiful fields and enjoy a day of horse racing and exquisite tailgate parties.

fluid cycling: A JOURNEY OF A LIFETIME by Laurie Wightman
I
rose out of bed early one morning in anticipation to take on my first riding experience at Fluid Cycling right here in Wayne. As I peered out the window to take in the first day of spring, I was unexpectedly hit with a view of thick heavy snow coming down from every direction. With a huge sigh of distress I immediately wanted to crawl back under my covers, stay warm and forget about my eager ambitions of cycling at Fluid. Instead, I prepared myself for the class and ventured out into what I was hoping would be the last winter storm in our area. I had no idea what was in store for me, but I was determined to ride my weather doldrums away on a state-of-the art RealRyder fitness bike at Fluid Cycling. To say my morning was completely turned around within the 45 minute cycling class would be an understatement. I left the snow behind me as I entered the studio and adjusted myself on the bike gearing up for a hopeful riding adventure. The concept behind Fluid Cycling is to bring the outdoor riding experience indoors while riding through locations all over the world on a MyRide forward motion video screen. Tracy Barausky, co-owner and instructor, kicked off the class with taking us through a warm-up ride in the beautiful Bear Mountain State Park in upstate NY. Once our legs were consistently moving at a strong pace we left New York behind us and entered into the majestic Italian Alps preparing for a challenging climb. By having this massive screen directly in front of me with the most incredible views of Italy, I was instantly inspired to push on and give it my all. After a

powerful ride along the curving roads through the Italian Alps, we moved back into the states and landed on the coast of California. We weaved our way along Route 1 leaning and pivoting the handle bars around each bend along the Pacific coastline. My journey could have ended there and I would have been simply elated. However, there was one more challenging aspect to this exhilarating journey as Tracy guided us back into Europe to finish it off through a portion of a Tour de France route. adrenaline as we climbed My quads burned with one last major mountain that so many world-class riders have done several times before. Our reward was a beautiful descend that led us through a picturesque French village that warmly welcomed us as we let our legs spin freely and our heart rates came back to a normal pace. This was

to become the premiere cycling studio in Wayne and the Main Line. “Fluid is the first indoor cycling studio on the Main Line with the exclusive use of RealRyder bikes that have a tilt and lean technology to create a real life riding experience while being indoors,” commented Tracy. “They are the only stationary bikes in the world that move laterally, allowing riders to bank (lean) into a turn. As a result, the workouts are more dynamic, intense and comprehensive than a traditional indoor cycling bike.” Fluid also offers alternative programming to build upon each of the classes through programs such as core & body sculpt, ride & road classes and endurance training. Through a variety of options to choose from, one will never feel complacent with a work-out routine at Fluid. Along with having one of the best indoor riding experiences, additionally there is a very strong sense of community at Fluid. Clients and instructors tend to go beyond their work-out at Fluid and have built a sense of camaraderie in and outside of the studio. In turn it has created a haven for many clients to join and build new friendships along the way. “I would love Fluid to be a place where you can feel empowered, share your goals, meet a buddy, be held accountable in a kind nurturing way and experience a rush of endorphins that leaves you feeling accomplished,” remarked Tracy. “There are beautiful places we climb, descend and power through that I will never experience in real life. But for 45 minutes I can cross the Atlantic and enjoy Italy, France, Germany and just ride.” It is a riding experience that one can easily become hooked on, and I am proud to say I am officially on board. Easter Crown Roast of Lamb • • • • • • •
1 whole loin of lamb, tied into a crown shape coarse salt and freshly ground black pepper 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 1 teaspoon rosemary, chopped 1 teaspoon thyme leaves, chopped 2 tablespoons fresh flat-leaf parsley, chopped 2 large cloves garlic, peeled
1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees. 2. Combine chopped rosemary and thyme with one tablespoon of the olive oil and set aside. 3. Combine chopped parsley with the remaining two tablespoons of olive oil and set aside. 4. Season the inside and outside of the roast with salt and pepper. 5. Rub the roast with the herb olive oil and stick the garlic cloves firmly in the middle of the center cavity. 6. Roast for 30 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 130 degrees for medium-rare. 7. Remove, coat lightly with the parsley oil and allow to rest for 20 minutes before slicing into individual chops and serving. 8. Garnish the serving platter with the rest of the parsley oil along with any side dish such as Moroccan couscous.

2 cups raw potatoes (grated) 1 large carrot (grated) 1 medium yellow or white onion (grated) 1⁄4 cup matzo meal 2 eggs 1⁄4 cup oil salt and pepper Sour Cream (for topping) Scallions (for topping)
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. 2. Peel potatoes, carrot and onion; then grate each vegetable individually. 3. Mix together vegetables, matzo meal, salt and pepper in a large bowl. 4. Beat eggs and oil together. 5. Stir into potato mixture. 6. Pour into well-greased muffin tins. 7. Bake for 1 hour or until edges are browned and crisp. 8. Top each cake with a dollop of sour cream and scallions.

Creative Camp: Main Line Art Center – Wild about Art This is way more than your average arts-andcraft camp. Special Needs Camp: Camp Pegasus Camp Pegasus is a fun-filled day camp for girls and boys struggling with social skills deficits. Based on renown therapist Mike Fogel's "The Art of Friendship" curriculum, the camp weaves together social skills techniques, creative-art therapies, super-positive reward system and traditional camp activities.
