I feel incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to be closely involved with the Devon Horse Show & Country Fair building up to the event and during the show. The staff, committee members, chairman and volunteers are collectively the most supportive and generous group of individuals to work with. Brenda Carpenter in particular has been the single largest asset to making this entire issue look aesthetically beautiful. All of the photography, minus the history timeline, come from the superb talent of Brenda Carpenter who has been the premier photographer of the Devon Horse Show & Country Fair for over 10 years. This is single handedly one of the most traditional events that occurs each year out here on the Main Line. Enjoy everything that Devon has to offer and take great pride in knowing you are supporting a fabulous event that is here to stay. Sincerely,

eet Kearney and Whitlock, the Gelderlander-Dutch Breed duo that are still stunning at the sweet age of 9-years-old. They came by way of Great Britain where they were a part of a team that competed at the Royal Windsor Horse Show and placed 3rd in the competition. This is where Mr. Wayne W. Grafton, our newly appointed Chairman at the Devon Horse Show & Country Fair, Inc. and Foundation, discovered the beautiful pair and discussed with their then owner about purchasing them. He and his wife Marjorie jumped at the opportunity to bring them back to Unionville, PA where the horses reside today on the Grafton’s spectacular farms. Kearney and Whitlock are a part of a team with two other horses named Shanks and Kimball, naming all four after American and English carriage makers. The team of four traveled to Great Britain to compete in the Royal Windsor Horse Show and this time came out on top by winning the overall competition! Kearney and Whitlock both have a demanding presence when they ride with their high steeping movement and high head carriage. Two very unique characteristics that certainly differentiate themselves from other horses in their class. Their white stockings and white blazes that are so noticeably beautiful are part of the markings that old Dutch breeders slowly developed into the breed so they would get a tax break for the horses; as people would see them more clearly in the evening creating a great advantage. Both horses get their exercise around the farm where they are ridden three times a week. In their pastime Kearney and Whitlock patrol the land to assure that no deer enter the grounds and have become very noble guards. and of course, carrots. These dashing and handsome horses are simply striking to watch as they gallivant around on the grounds. Wayne and Marjorie Grafton enjoy riding the horses on the farm and around Unionville. They have been a great match in competitions where they have won several shows with another team on their carriages. Although they no longer compete, they do enjoy participating in the Carriage Pleasure Drive. Mr. Grafton has been involved with Devon for 35 years in a variety of capacities. He has been a box holder, competitor, member of the gentlemen’s/hospitality committee, Board Member and now Chairman. He has also been on the Board and a past president of the Ludwig’s Corner Horse Show, along with currently holding the position of President at the Philadelphia Four-in-Hand Club. Mr. Grafton’s favored events at Devon would be the Carriage Pleasure Drive, the entertainment with the carriage races, the children’s derby races and of course the Grand Prix! He is thrilled to come on board as Chairman at Devon and looks forward to a world class show this season.

1930’s 1940’s
The Country Fair used to offer Goat Cart rides for .25 cents. Children eagerly anticipated attending the Devon Horse Show so they may have the chance to get a ride around the Country Fair. Goat carts were used a lot in rural areas of PA, and now are vintage collectables. In this photo, volunteers Charlotte Marquissee (in white coat) and Mary Dickson are pulling Emma and Edward Klepp in a goat cart in 1933.
The Flower Cart originated in the 40’s as another way to raise money at Devon. The cart would be pulled around with cut flowers placed within to be sold to spectators. Mostly young men would purchase flowers or boutonnieres to give to the young women. However in this photo, Louise Kelly (3 years old) pinned a carnation on the jacket her brother Lance Kelly (5 years old) in 1949.
the charming & exciting years at the devon horse show
1958
The famous Gypsy Rose Lee, known for being a burlesque entertainer, attended the Devon Horse Show to perform an act in the Wanamaker Oval riding 4 horses. It was a rainy evening and the oval was rather muddy. Jimmy Robinson carried Gypsy Rose out to the oval and placed her on the horses so she wouldn’t get dirty. This was a slightly risqué move and many spectators gawked in surprise!
1950’s
Jimmy Robinson, longtime Devon participant, thought the crowd would get a kick out of him riding into the Wanamaker Oval on a chariot with four Shetland ponies. The spectators roared with excitement and the idea was a great triumph at Devon that year.
1960’s
President Eisenhower was a great fan of horse events and shows. He attended the Devon Horse Show & Country Fair twice. Here in this photo he is accompanied by Tom Bright, a former President and Chairman at Devon, as they enjoyed a day of events in 1963.

the tradition
by Laurie Wightman Photo by Brenda Carpenter
T
he Devon Horse Show & Country Fair continues its celebrated tradition as the oldest and largest outdoor multi-breed competition in the United States. The 2015 Devon Horse Show and Country Fair will open the gates for its 119th year edition of equestrian distinction, first-class horsemanship and family fun for all to enjoy. Dating back to 1896, Devon is steeped in a tremendous amount of history and tradition. In times where many old traditions are falling by the wayside across the country, it is truly remarkable that Devon has been able to hold on to such an impressive event that brings generations of families and visitors together every year to benefit Bryn Mawr Hospital. It speaks volumes that so many people come together to devote their time and effort to assure that this two week-long event is a magical experience for all who attend. This year’s slogan, “The Tradition Continues,” is a reflection of maintaining all of the special and unique factors that have gone into play throughout the years at Devon. With new leadership in place to preserve the rich heritage of Devon, it is clear that this year’s show will be the best one yet. “Devon is tradition,” stated Wayne Grafton, newly appointed Chairman. “Tradition transcends all of our activities; from the schedule of events to the expectations of our competitors, as well as our volunteers and especially our sponsors. The challenge has been gaining a clear understanding of these many traditions and balancing them in the context of where our wonderful venue needs to be as we look forward into the future, and as we continue to create a future vision for Devon.”
n continues
The iconic show grounds at Devon will be in pristine shape to keep the large spectator base enthusiastic and interested about coming back to the show this year. This is of the utmost importance to the leadership at Devon along with equally pleasing the exhibitors at this dynamic event. “Devon is a very special show,” commented Rich O’Donnell, newly appointed President. “We have a very long, successful history of raising money for our beneficiary, Bryn Mawr Hospital, and running a world-class event. The Devon Horse Show and Country Fair is unique in that it is over 90% volunteer managed and staffed. My goal is to bring together Board Members, leadership and volunteers as one team and work toward making Devon shine like never before.” The Devon Country Fair will be in full swing anticipating the arrival of all the families and visitors that have grown accustomed to the wide array of activities, events and treats that are offered throughout the two week event. Since the inception of the Country Fair in 1919, the overriding goal has always been to raise money to support their beneficiary, Bryn Mawr Hospital. The history is steeped in their longtime relationship and continues to thrive. The rich tradition of passing down the values of volunteering at Devon have been instilled in so many families’ lives. There are over 2,000 volunteers that happily devote their time and service to make sure this event is better than the year before. Devon is not only a tradition, it is a place that so many individuals call home during these 10 wondrous days in May. It is a home that generations of families have looked forward to coming to each and every year. It is a home that is here to stay.

THE NEW LEADER AT DEVON by Laurie Wightman
C
ongratulations on being appointed the new President of the Devon Horse Show & Country Fair! What would you say is the most important accomplishment that you would like to see in 2015? I would like to see the 2015 Devon Horse Show & Country Fair be the BEST one yet! I want everyone to come out and have fun with their friends and family. Devon is a tradition where families and friends come together to see “Where Champions Meet.” Also, I hope we can exceed financial expectations for our beneficiary, Bryn Mawr Hospital. How many years have you been involved with the Devon Horse Show & Country Fair, and at what capacity? Well, 2015 is my 40th year of involvement. I began my career with Devon on the grounds committee with a Director by the name of Sylvester Quigley. After about five years Mr. Quigley recommended to then Chairman, Hope Montgomery Scott, that I be made a Director of the Devon Horse Show. I was in my late 20’s and when she contacted me she asked that I consider being a Board Member. I was thrilled! Mrs. Scott asked that I attend the annual meeting where she would introduce me to the rest of the Board after the vote was taken. I was asked to enter the board room at Bryn Mawr Hospital where I received an applause from other Directors. When I realized the process, I was asked to take my seat next to Jack Seabrook and James (Jimmy) Robinson. When I sat down, another gentleman spoke to me and said, “Young man take a look around the Board Room, what do you see?” I was speechless and he said, “You just

made history at the Devon Horse Show by becoming the youngest Board of Director to be voted in as a Board Member. Welcome, now you are the future of this show.” Since my start, I was Chairman of the Sponsorship and Grounds Committee. Then I was voted in as Secretary, followed by Treasurer and now, President! You have had many other roles in the equestrian community to build an impressive background of experience. Where else have you volunteered your services? I am currently Treasurer and Director for The Carriage Association of America located in Lexington, Kentucky. In addition, I am Treasurer of the Kimberton Hunt Club in Kimberton, Pennsylvania. I have been a member of “The Road Club” of England, and a member of the Philadelphia Four in Hand Club. I also serve as a Trustee of the HoopesAddis Educational Trust which provides funding for Carriage Driving Clinics and Education. What are some of your strongest traits and/or characteristics that you think will be most beneficial in your role as President? I feel one of my strongest traits is that I am a gentleman and have an upbeat personality. This transpires into me always trying to maintain a positive attitude in whatever I am doing. I have a willingness to work hard and be in the trenches alongside everyone else so we may see the event be as successful as possible. The title of President doesn’t exclude me from working hard with all the volunteers and staff to make a real difference at the Devon Horse Show & Country Fair. Where does your passion for horses and the equestrian world come from? When I was in high school I asked my parents if I could take riding lessons and their response was that I needed to save money for college and my future. I think my parents thought this was a fleeting desire and that it would eventually pass. However, my passion only grew stronger through my university days. After college my parents gave me riding lessons at Radnor Hunt with Sally Graburn. I began fox hunting with Radnor shortly after the lessons were completed. This was the start of my passion for horses. After a while I expressed interest in carriages, and this time my Dad really thought I was off my rocker. 30 plus years later my wife and I have a collection of antique horse drawn carriages that has grown to be a great hobby of ours. I truly enjoy being around horses, and I love riding as well as other activities associated with the sport. What is something new at Devon that you are particularly happy about? We have a great staff of dedicated employees. I am excited about our new Chief Marketing Officer, Chris Wightman, and our new Director of Ticket Sales, J. Patrick Rees. Both of these gentlemen bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the show. I have worked with them for the past six months and have witnessed their capabilities. They are a terrific addition to Devon. What is your most favorite event at the Devon Horse Show & Country Fair? The Carriage Marathon as well as the Carriage and Coaching classes are some of my favored events. However, I thoroughly enjoy the jumper events and the children’s leadline is fantastic. This is the future of Devon! What do you want the spectators to experience at Devon this year? I hope everyone experiences a really fun show filled with plenty of variety to entertain all of their interests. Most importantly I hope all the spectators will feel a strong sense of pride in this wonderful horse show environment. The tradition continues at the Devon Horse Show & Country Fair.

AN ENDURING RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DEVON HORSE SHOW & BRYN MAWR HOSPITAL by Laurie Wightman Contributor - Bridget Therriault, Dir. of Communications at Main Line Health
T
he relationship between Bryn Mawr Hospital and the Devon Horse Show & Country Fair dates back over 100 years with a rich history steeped in tradition. Each year in May, over 2,000 volunteers come together to staff the Devon Country Fair and support the efforts of raising funds to benefit Bryn Mawr Hospital. The Devon Horse Show & Country Fair is the single largest and longest donor to Bryn Mawr Hospital, and has one of the largest volunteer fundraising efforts in the country. Volunteers have raised $14,500,000 to date, with annual donations to the hospital for specific initiatives based on the hospital’s largest priority needs. Some of the recent donations have funded projects such as a new infant anti-abduction system and NICU equipment, the expansion of the Emergency Department and the purchase of seven neuro-cardiac intensive care unit beds, two Zoll biphasic defibrillators and a mammography workstation monitor for the Barbara Brodsky Comprehensive Breast Center. This past December, Devon made its first installment of $425,000 toward a $2 million commitment to build a new Intensive Care Unit which will be a part of a much larger project at Bryn Mawr Hospital. That project is named the “Modernization Project” and is a $200 million Campus Master Plan to modernize the Hospital campus. This will be the most significant facility improvement in its more than 120-year existence and the second WayneMagazine.com | May 2015

largest capital investment in Main Line Health history. The modernization project will include a new patient pavilion, as well as renovations to the labor/delivery and maternity units. Once completed in 2018, the Hospital will be equipped with all private patient rooms, contemporary facilities and advanced technology to support the evolving needs of the community. The new Campus Master plan includes a five-story, 203,000 square foot patient pavilion which is comprised of 12 replacement operating rooms in a state-of-the-art surgical suite, renovations to the Warden Lobby (the main Hospital entrance), and 72 replacement patient rooms (54 medical/surgical beds and 18 critical care beds). The building will be erected in the center of the campus, taking the place of the Clothier Building and Medical Office Building South. The Campus Master Plan will be supported by a community fundraising effort.

“Part of our mission at Main Line Health is to continually and responsibly reinvest in the communities we serve to ensure that access to both wellness resources and superior patient care is readily available to all,” said Jack Lynch, President and CEO of MLH. “For more than 120 years, Bryn Mawr Hospital has been serving the health needs of its community – this modernization project reinforces our commitment to serve as stewards of health and wellness by ensuring BMH is positioned to provide preventive services and advance technology and treatment options for well into the future.” Devon’s contribution for the new Intensive Care Unit is scheduled to open in the summer of 2018. To show their immense gratitude for the ever-evolving partnership that the two organizations have, Bryn Mawr Hospital will commemorate the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair’s significant contributions over the 100-plus year relationship with a presenting plaque in the facility. This unique and special relationship is only possible through the sincere dedication of the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair volunteers. So when you are enjoying the Garden Café, Hot Dogs, the Midway, Operation Goldmine, Devon Derby, the Candy Booth Souvenirs, Soft Drinks and Ice Cream, The Art Gallery at Devon and of course, the Tea Cart - feel great about knowing your contributions are going toward to an enduring tradition of supporting Bryn Mawr Hospital and all that they do for the community.

TRIBUTE TO THE FACE OF DEVON by Christopher Wightman Photos by Brenda Carpenter
T
he Devon Horse Show and Country Fair community were deeply saddened this past winter when the passing of Chairman Emeritus, Leonard A. King, Jr., occurred on February 2, 2015. Leonard, 83 years of age, devoted over half of his life to Devon and led the organization, first as President from 1995 to 2005, and then as Chairman from 2005 to 2012. He was a true gentleman, a leader in the equestrian world, an accomplished artist and poet, and a friend and mentor who was always ready to share advice, a joke, or one of his famous stories. “Leonard King meant so many wonderful things to our event,” said President Richard M. O’Donnell. “He led our organization to important, new heights and kept a steady direction during times of immense change. He will always be remembered as the “Face of Devon.”
Leonard’s roots run deep in the Philadelphia area. He grew up in a row house in Chester, PA just outside of Philadelphia. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania where he perfected a talent for painting, leading to numerous exhibitions of his works, most featuring scenes of his beloved Chester County. He was an avid foxhunter, having received his first pony at the age of 12, with both the Rose Tree Hunt and The Radnor

Few have contributed more to the development and growth of the show jumping industry than Leonard King. Much of his 40-year career was dedicated to bringing the sport of show jumping to the popularity it holds today. Leonard was one of the founding members of the American Grand Prix Association in 1978 and remained its President through 1999. Classic, The Valley Forge Grand Prix and the inaugural FEI World Cup in the United States in Baltimore, MD. In 2010, he was inducted into the Show Jumping Hall of Fame. Leonard was also a respected judge, officiating at some of the largest shows in the country. Leonard’s legacy at Devon is felt in many ways. He was known for his diplomacy and ability to connect with people. Leonard was particularly proud of implementing the Directors Executive Committee in 1996, uniting the organization by bringing six members from the Horse Show Executive Committee, and six members from the Country Fair Executive Committee to act as the governing body of Devon. This cooperative era laid the groundwork for the current organizational structure that took effect in 2014. In 2012, he was awarded the inaugural Moran Family Award, which recognizes excellence in the equestrian industry. Donated by Caroline Moran and her family, the award recognized Leonard as the “Face of Devon.” It is a face, and a man, that will be deeply mourned and missed by his entire Devon family.
