editor’s letter May 2016
It’s that time of year once again when Wayne Magazine has the honor of dedicating the May issue to the annual Special Edition: The Devon Horse Show and Country Fair. This will be the third year in the making of presenting you with a fun-filled issue that has all-inclusive editorial content on this amazing 11-day event right here at Devon. What makes this year extra special is the fact that we are all celebrating the 120th Anniversary of the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair! What an accomplishment to see this tremendous event still existing with such vibrancy and strength after all these years. In times where many old traditions are falling by the wayside across the country, I find it truly remarkable that we are still able to hold on to such an impressive event that brings generations of families and visitors together every year to benefit Bryn Mawr Hospital. It speaks volumes that so many people come together to devote their time and effort to assure that this two week event is a magical experience for all who attend. I feel incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to be closely involved with the Devon Horse Show & Country Fair building up to the event and during the show. What started out with me simply dedicating an entire issue to this event 3 years ago, has now evolved into me also becoming a volunteer and having so much of my heart dedicated to this organization and cause to assure that each year gets better than the last. It’s what Devon does best…it draws you in, pulls at your heartstrings, creates lasting memories and makes you always wanting to come back for more. Let’s create more memories this year as we celebrate the last 120 years of Devon! Sincerely,
Laurie Wightman’s Contact Information: Email: Laurie@ WayneMagazine.com

volunteerism:
A TRUE MARK OF DEDICATION FOR BRYN MAWR HOSPITAL by Laurie Wightman
T
he remarkable partnership that the Devon Country Fair and Bryn Mawr Hospital have preserved is steeped rich in history that dates back over 100 years. Each year over 2,000 volunteers come together to staff the Devon Country Fair to support the efforts of raising funds to benefit Bryn Mawr Hospital. Volunteers have raised $15,000,000 to date, with the largest donation given in this last year in the amount of $500,000. This makes the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair the single largest and longest donor to Bryn Mawr Hospital, and has one of the largest volunteer fundraising efforts in the country. In 2018, as part of an extensive modernization project, Bryn Mawr Hospital will open a new pavilion with operating rooms, private patient rooms and a state-of-the-art intensive care unit dedicated to the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair in recognition of this iconic establishment’s generous support. Many volunteers look forward to this annual event all year long so they may re-connect with old friends to create another year of wonderful memories while working hard to benefit Bryn Mawr Hospital. One volunteer in particular, Liz Mayer, has spent the last 23 years dedicating her time to Devon Country Fair as a chairman, and also to Bryn Mawr Hospital. Her main focus for the last 12 years has been working on the Devon Derby WayneMagazine.com | May 2016

An exceptional partnership. For exceptionally precious cases. Bryn Mawr Hospital and Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children have teamed up to bring extraordinary pediatric care, offering a specialized emergency room for children and a comprehensive 14-bed inpatient pediatric unit. Pediatric specialists are on site 24/7, so the most important person in your life doesn’t have to wait very long or go very far to see a great doctor. 130 South Bryn Mawr Avenue Bryn Mawr, PA 19010

committee, which she currently holds the position of Senior Chairman. The Devon Derby is a unique asset to the fundraising efforts of Bryn Mawr Hospital where 100% of the proceeds goes entirely to the hospital. For over a decade Liz Mayer has been a devoted volunteer in assuring that the Devon Derby is a successful initiative both at the hospital and during the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair. She assists in the Operation Goldmine drawing where anyone has the opportunity to win a timeless piece of jewelry, this year being a vintage-designed sapphire and diamond pendant donated by Kellmer Jewelers. Chances are $25 each and the drawing will be held before the Grand Prix on Thursday, June 2nd. However, the grand prize for the Devon Derby drawing will be a 2-year lease on the newly released F-PACE Jaguar donated by Land Rover Main Line. Be sure to check out this stunning automobile in front of the Dixon Oval to purchase your chances - $2 each or six chances for $10. The drawing for the F-PACE Jaguar and other Derby prizes will be held on Saturday evening, June 4th. Although Liz Mayer has been highly involved in the Devon Derby committee for many years, she began her volunteer efforts working in the “cafeteria” at Devon which is now known as Garden Café. She moved on to the recalled Toys and Teens committee before switching over to the Hospital Shop, where the creative committee of volunteers would re-finish old pieces of furniture to sell and benefit Bryn Mawr Hospital. Liz’s efforts at Bryn Mawr Hospital were directly connected through her husband, Dr. Hank Mayer, who was a lead physician at the hospital for 37 years. She spent five years on the Women’s Board at Bryn Mawr Hospital, which is a thriving philanthropic group of young women who collectively work hard to raise funds for the hospital. It is evident that Liz has played an essential role in benefiting Bryn Mawr Hospital on both ends, and has enjoyed the journey along the way. “Devon reminds me of Brigadoon where it pops up once a year and everything comes to life,” remarked Liz. “It’s an experience that will always stay with you.” We tip our hats off to you Liz Mayer, and all of the other volunteers for your worthy efforts to benefit Bryn Mawr Hospital. The 120th Annual Devon Horse Show Attracts Olympic Hopefuls WITH NEW FEI RANKING By Morgan Appleyard – BTC Marketing Additional Grand Prix Prize Information by Laurie Wightman
G
et ready to witness some of the best riders in the world as they prepare for the Olympic Games! The Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI), the international governing body of equestrian sport, has sanctioned the 120th annual Devon Horse Show, thus allowing riders to earn valuable points towards the Longines World Ranking list. To be recognized as a FEI CSI 4* (four-star) rated show, the Devon Horse Show invested more than $1 million in physical improvements to the show grounds and substantially increased its prize money. The new, prestigious rating will elevate the level of equestrian competition by attracting international superstars. In turn, audiences will be entertained with even more thrilling performances. “Earning the four-star rating is very difficult and reflects our dedication to providing a world-class experience for our audiences and competitors,” said Devon Horse Show and Country Fair Chairman Wayne W. Grafton. “We cannot wait to welcome everyone to our 120th show, ‘Where Champions Meet,’ and most exciting year ever!” The Devon Horse Show, which opens May 26th through June 5th, will host three FEI CSI 4* rated classes: the $50,000 Devon Welcome Stake on May 31, the $40,000 Devon International Speed Stake on June 1, and the $225,000 Sapphire Grand Prix on June 2. Notably, the prize money for the Sapphire Grand Prix alone was increased $125,000 from its previous level of $100,000. The reasoning behind this was if the purse is over $216,000 the competitors will receive double points in the competition which is a tremendous asset. With successful results in any of these events, athletes can improve their standing on the Longines World Ranking list, which is the ticket to qualifying for top events internationally. The public is encouraged to buy tickets in advance online from the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair website; Priority Packages and General Admission tickets go on sale April 4th. Attendees can purchase a Three-Night World Ranking Competition Grand Prix Package, which includes Reserved Grandstand seating for the three evening FEI events. The package price is $155. t is an exciting year on the Devon Horse Show grounds as they celebrate their 120th year in existence. The Devon Horse Show & Country Fair continues its celebrated tradition as the oldest and largest outdoor multi-breed competition in the United States. However, it has become so much more than that, as it is a place that so many individuals call home during these 11 wondrous days in May. It is a home that generations of families have looked forward to coming back to each and every year. On the heels of making their largest gift ever – $500,000 to Bryn Mawr Hospital – The Devon Horse Show and Country Fair Foundation Board of Directors have invested $1 million into the show grounds for the 2016 Show. The Devon Horse Show and Country Fair will enhance the experience for attendees and competitors through a variety of renovations and new construction. The most dramatic addition will be an entirely new, two-story building located on Dorset Road, making it the centerpiece of the show grounds. The first floor will house the emergency medical services facility sponsored by Bryn Mawr Hospital as well as the Horse Show Entries, management, public relations and ticketing offices for its staff members. The building will also include a first-class entertainment venue with specular orbital views of both the Dixon Oval and the Gold Ring. Devon Horse Show and Country Fair Chairman Wayne W. Grafton commented, “The tradition not only continues at Devon but improvements are being made with major enhancements to our grounds. We are focused on making this a wonderful venue for competitors and attendees for many years to come.”
UNTRY FAIR:
ary Celebration ents Other changes in the works include additional space behind the East Grandstands for vendor rentals. Significant improvements to the footings, as well as laser leveling in all three rings will result in an improved experience for competitors. A ‘Silver to Gold’ theme will define the 120th anniversary, painting the way for a new Anniversary Square, nestled outside Clydesdale’s Corner. Guests will be welcomed to gather on a grand, brick patio that provides a front-row panorama of the Schooling Ring. The sale of commemorative bricks for Anniversary Square will provide guests the opportunity to be indelibly linked to the Devon Horse Show. “We invite the community to join in and add a brick with their name, for it will perpetually be marked on the Devon Horse Show,” noted Karin Maynard, Devon Horse Show and Country Fair Chair of Development Committee. In addition, more than 220 of the permanent barn stalls have been reconditioned to ensure the safety of the horses and their riders during the event. This project will be supported through the purchase of personalized horseshoes by exhibitors as well as direct donations. All of these tremendous changes are a culmination of a past rich in hard work and commitment to ensure that these 11 days remain a first class event for years to come. We tip our hats to all the honorable chairmen and volunteers who have paved the way for Devon in the last 120 years. We celebrate the vision for the future of Devon and all of the exciting days ahead.

A BOUTIQUE FOR EVERY WOMAN by Laurie Wightman
C
alling all ladies... it’s time to shop at Devon, and be prepared for some really great treasures! Something equally exciting as being a spectator at the Devon Horse Show is having the opportunity to gallivant around the Country Fair and check out all the charming boutiques that are sprinkled around the grounds. 1919 was the first year the Country Fair opened and had an “easy street” as the main thoroughfare of this little village. Today, nearly 40 shops line the paths of Devon and fill the grounds with elegant designer clothes and jewelry to fine art and horse related merchandise. But there is one shop in particular that has been a staple at Devon for 10 years now and is always a MUST for every woman to pop their heads in and see what the latest fashions, hats and accessories are of the season at Devon. It is the one and only, fun and flirty boutique named Polka Dots!

Polka Dots, owned by Susan Randels, is like a jeweled box overflowing with the most brilliant women’s fashion that is lovingly suited for any woman at any age. Susan’s storefront is located right down the road in the Paoli Shopping Center and has maintained a very strong presence for over 12 years. The savvy entrepreneur had many careers that led her to where she is now. Her introduction to women’s retail began with a tanning salon in Chesterbrook named Endless Summer Tanning where she also carried an assortment of accessories. Susan’s interest in women’s merchandise grew rather rapidly, and the salon progressively evolved into an established fashion boutique. This inspired Susan to open up her first women’s retail shop in downtown Malvern named Endless Summer Boutique. With a strong following from locals the shop was bursting at the seams in no time. This led Susan to search out a larger and more fitting retail space which brought her to the current location in Paoli that has certainly become the go-to shop for women along the Main Line. “Our client base runs the gamet from sophisticated teenagers all the way to women well into their 80’s,” commented Susan. “This makes it great fun for us and our customers as we have such a wide variety of merchandise to choose from no matter what your body type is. My staff has been with me since I opened the store and we totally know our product. Every woman that works here has a different body type and we try absolutely everything on. Therefore we know our customer’s figures and what will look good on them.” There really isn’t anything that Polka Dots doesn’t carry for the modern or conservative woman. From tops, tunics, dresses, blouses, formal dresses, jeans, capris, pants, jewelry, purses and hats there truly is something for everyone at amazing price points that will always leave you guilt-free and coming back for more. But the biggest differentiator for Polka Dots is definitely the attention to detail that the staff takes great pride in with each customer. “There has never been a challenge we couldn’t meet,” remarked Susan. “I can assure that any woman who walks through our doors at any age and at any size, we will find them something remarkable that will fit them like a glove. We want our customers feeling confident and beautiful when they walk out of the store, and that is what we are really known for.”

Another added benefit to shopping with Polka Dots is the personal assistance they offer with helping customers pack for trips. They will go as far as packing four or five outfits together, wrap them up and even take photos of the ensembles so the customer will know exactly how to wear them to look their very best on that special vacation. “We’re your personal stylist, but you don’t have to pay us for that service. We really want to make you happy, and will go to any length to make that happen,” highlighted Susan. “Most importantly, we’re really honest too! I want people complimenting my customers when they are out and about, not the other way around.”
Looking ahead to Devon, Polka Dots is a key sponsor of the infamous Ladies’ Day event. One of the most anticipated events where women have the opportunity to flaunt their most extravagant hats. Polka Dots has always been known for their elegant hats at extremely appealing price points. Be sure to stop on by Booth 15 where Polka Dots will be located at Devon and get yourself geared up for the big day with a wide array of incredible hats to choose from paired with fresh and vibrant dresses to finish off the look. “I love every second of Devon. I’m there 12 hours a day for the entire show. My staff and I have so much fun with our ‘neighborhood’ of businesses and friends that we have grown to know through the years. We have regular customers too who come see us once a year when they attend Devon from out of town, and are always so excited to see what we have on display,” commented Susan. Polka Dots is a cherished gem on the main line and certainly at Devon for that matter. Be prepared to visit Booth 15 and the shop in Paoli as both boutiques will be fully stocked with exceptional merchandise that will leave you coming back for more.

OF DEVON by Laurie Wightman
A
s we honor the 120th Anniversary of the Devon Horse Show & Country Fair, we also want to honor all the volunteers, spectators, riders and visitors who have come back to Devon year after year to be a part of something that has become so much greater than just an 11-day event. It has become a magical place where so many moments and memories have been created for families and friends alike. A sense of home for many individuals where they look forward to spending their Memorial Day weekend right here in Devon and all the days that follow during the show. Did you know that it takes one million seconds to add up to 11 days? Those seconds add up to minutes, which adds up to hours, which then adds up to days of enchanting moments that are created by individuals everywhere. During your time on the Devon Horse Show grounds this year, consider taking photos of all of the best moments you experience during the seconds, minutes, hours and days that add up to these one million moments during the 11-day event! Post them on The Devon Horse Show & Country Fair Facebook page with this hashtag: #MILLIONMOMENTSOFDEVON. Let’s make Devon proud by showing our support for all that they have done for us over the years by getting involved in the Million Moments of Devon campaign! To get into the spirit of celebrating this monumental anniversary, we asked around to various chairmen of Devon if they had a special moment that stood out in their minds through their years attending and volunteering at Devon. What a spectacular response we received which only reflected the true beauty of what the Devon Horse Show & Country Fair has created for so many people. We hope you too will create more magical moments in 2016 to honor the last 120 years.
A favorite memory was when I stopped by the show grounds the Monday after the show had ended and had the pleasure of watching the Clydesdales playing in the Gold Ring before they had to get on their trailers. They were bucking and running and having a wonderful time. —Lisa Estabrook, Sr. Committee Chairman DCF WayneMagazine.com | May 2016

My sister Missy and I were selling programs at the front gate for our Mom Kathy, who was chairman of Programs for many years. Sales were slow, so we started working the crowd. We basically were just reading from the table of contents of the program, but with drama and volume, like a peanut or beer vendor at a sports game. Program sales started picking up, and then Hope Scott came over, full of compliments, telling us ‘That’s the way you sell those programs!’ She joined in helping us sell the programs. She loved the fun we were generating, and the front gate area came to life in true Devon style. It wasn’t Grand Prix night, but it sure felt like it.
I was a chairman in souvenirs in 2009 and my buddy Jen Mihok was the senior chairman. Jen was inspired and very instrumental in transitioning that business into the mini department store you see today! It was Grand Prix Thursday and I was schlepping a carton of rubber rain boots from the candy storage nook. I heard the announcer say that the winner of the operation goldmine, Cartier wrist watch, was Jen Mihok!! I started running across the Fair yelling to her, ‘You Won! You Won!’ When she FINALLY figured it out we started jumping up and down together like idiots. It was a great moment... real karma. Jen totally deserved that prize!

I always loved attending the Black Tie & Boots Ball we held the first weekend in May. The venues were always a treat ranging from the Dixon Oval, the Ardrossan Estate and Bryn Clovis at Brushwood Farm. They were elegant yet a festive night out with beautiful ball gowns and cowboy boots enjoying cocktails, dinner, and dancing overlooking rolling hills with horses.
When I was in middle school, my friends and I would volunteer together. The first year the Country Fair sold smoothies we were there making them just at a table by the tea cart with a few blenders. We had the perfect view of the Dixon Oval and we had a blast trying out different smoothies and meeting other volunteers and visitors.
–Janet Heaton, Committee Chairman DCF

I look forward to The Devon Horse Show every year. There is an incredible amount of hard work that takes place behind the scenes that only the volunteers of Devon can explain. All of that hard work culminates in eleven days of fun, excitement, stress, friendship, community and all for the love of promoting good sportsmanship and a well deserving local beneficiary. —Josh Hagelin, Committee Chairman DCF

Over the past decade I’ve been lucky enough to have been involved in many aspects of the show, and there are many memorable milestones that come to mind. But, I’ve got to say, I think my favorite memory was riding in the Carriage Marathon with Jamie O’Rourke last year. It was wonderful to see the enthusiasm our community has for Devon as we passed the crowds along the route. It was my daughter’s first ride on a coach and it was really special for Tess to be able to share that with Betty Moran and Kathy Schwartz, two very inspirational women at Devon! –Mimi Killian, Committee Chairman DCF
I received the invitation from Hope Montgomery Scott to join the Board of Directors of the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair. At the actual Board meeting where I was voted in, I entered the room at Bryn Mawr Hospital and then Board Member, Mr. Fitz Eugen Dixon stated, ‘Young man look around this Board table, you are now the future of DEVON!’ Wow, I was speechless. –Rich O’Donnell, President of Devon Horse Show & Country Fair
Every year I look forward to volunteering with my co-chairs and colleagues to donate our time and help raise money for the benefit of Bryn Mawr Hospital. I am always energized by their commitment and dedication... and by the fun we have together! –Eileen Devine, Committee Chairman DCF
I grew up with the Devon Horse Show, as have my daughters. My oldest took to show jumping and last year accomplished her dream of riding into the Dixon Oval for competition. That truly had to be my most special moment at Devon. –Laura Wood, Sr. Committee Chairman DCF
In 1994, my wife Marjorie won the single horse competition with the most superb horse named Portia. She competed in a beautiful ‘Road Gig’ Brewster Carriage and I was so proud of her in that moment in the Dixon Oval. –Wayne Grafton, Chairman of Devon Horse Show & Country Fair
My ‘Moment at Devon’ has (and always will be) the special memory of my Mom and her passion for volunteering at Devon. Before her passing in 2003, my Mom held many positions on behalf of the Fair, including Country Fair Chairman during the 100th Anniversary. Her love of and commitment for Devon has had a resounding effect on me and my life, and I share the same devotion, thanks to her. –Karen Duffy, Sr. Committee Chairman DCF
I can remember weather of every stripe: cold, whipping winds, monsoons, floods, blistering heat and humidity. And the show goes on. The community still comes and through all our efforts, the community benefits. –Norma Hamm, Treasurer DCF
Hanging in the upstairs hall in my home are two portraits done by an artist at the Devon Country Fair, one of my oldest son at age 20 months in 1975 and the other of my youngest son at the same age in 1982. Those little boys are now 42 and 35, but whenever I look at those charming portraits, I’m reminded of the special place that Devon occupies in the hearts of millions in our community. May the tradition continue for another 120 years. Happy Anniversary, Devon! –Kate Kittleman, Committee Chairman DCF

appetizers at devon In celebration of Devon’s 120th Anniversary, we would like to honor some of the brilliant recipes featured in the recipe book titled “Appetizers at Devon” written by the amazing women who volunteered their time and effort to compile so many delicious recipes.
Devon Turf Club Delights
A true classic from back in the day with Velveeta and Spam! • • • •
8 ounces Velveeta cheese 1 white onion 1 (12 ounce) can Spam, finely chopped 60 Triscuits
Freeze the cheese for 1 hour and shred. Grate the onion on the finest side of the grater over a mixing bowl, allowing the juices to drain into the bowl. Stir in the cheese and Spam. Spoon onto the crackers and arrange in a single layer on a baking sheet. Broil for 1 minute or until golden brown and bubbly. Makes 5 dozen delights!
Caviar Pie
Devon ladies always knew how to class it up and still do! • • • • • •
6 hard-cooked eggs, chopped 3 tablespoons mayonnaise 1 ½ cups minced onions 8 ounces cream cheese, softened 2/3 cup sour cream 2 jars lumpfish caviar, strained (Ronanoff preferred)
Combine the eggs and mayonnaise in a bowl and spread over the bottom of a greased 8-inch spring form pan. Sprinkle with the onions. Mix the cream cheese and sour cream in a bowl until blended and spread over the prepared layers. Chill, covered, for 3 hours or longer. Just before serving the caviar over the top of the chilled layers, run a knife around the edge of the pan to loosen and remove the side, garnish with lemon wedges and parsley. Serve with assorted party crackers. Serves 12.

Blue Room Host’s Crab Dip
Submitted by: Skip Weidner – A favorite Blue Room Host. We loved her thoughtful suggestions of buying items from an old local business, Kelchner’s. • • • • •
1 package of lump crab meat 8 ounces cream cheese, softened 2 teaspoons horseradish (use Kelchner’s to give his cousin the business) 2 tablespoons Worcestershire 1 jar cocktail sauce (again, use Kelchner’s to give his cousin business and because they are so good)
Rinse and flake the crab meat. Combine with the cream cheese, horseradish and Worcestershire sauce in a mixing bowl and beat until combined. Shape into a ball and wrap with plastic wrap. Chill covered, for 8 to 10 hours. Remove the plastic wrap and place the crab meat ball on a serving plate. Pour the cocktail sauce over the top and serve with assorted crackers. Serves 10 to 12.
Devon Derby Punch
This punch was served at the Devon Derby Tea every year! • • • • • • •
Orange juice Fresh strawberries 2 (750 ml) bottles Champagne 4 quarts ginger ale ½ gallon orange sherbert 1 (12 ounce) can frozen lemonade concentrate 1 ( 10 ounce) package frozen strawberries
