editor’s letter MARCH/APRIL 2016
March has arrived and offers a glimmer of hope for milder days ahead filled with the scents of spring as tulips begin to sprout, and blossoms burst with color along the delicate branches of our trees. It is a gentle reminder that life re-creates itself in various forms, and that new beginnings are always around the corner. Wayne is certainly a community which offers so many ways to re-invigorate the spirit as we slowly emerge from the colder winter months that we leave behind. Whether it is getting out on the Radnor trail, attending some great events such as Eggstravaganza or Wheels of Wayne, or immersing your kids back into sports for the spring season – just be sure to get involved in the great community of Wayne this spring! In this refreshing issue we wanted to highlight stories on businesses, gardening, wedding prep and recipes that would ignite creativity for the springtime. Aubusson Home offers vibrant ideas to spruce your home up for the month of March as we look forward to brighter days. We feature SewROB, a premier Taylor here in Wayne, who should be your go-to shop for wedding and prom season this spring. A gardening guide is offered as a resource to think of new and fun ways to prep your garden this season. Hilary Ryan, owner of Plank Fitness, shares some tips to offer the best bridal body possible. We have our infamous food editor, Robert Groebel, who outdid himself once again with some amazing recipes for Easter and Passover. All of these great stories plus more to get you excited for warmer days ahead.

A quote I keep in my desk that I have always favored when thinking of springtime is from one of the greats, Mark Twain. “It’s spring fever. That is what the name of it is. And when you’ve got it, you want – oh, you don’t quite know what it is you do want, but it just fairly makes your heart ache, you want it so!” It’s time to embrace some spring fever everyone. Get out there and chase it, breathe it in and drink it up. Sincerely,

dog of the month by Laurie Wightman
M
eet Sadie Grace, the cutest F2B Petite English Goldendoodle in the area. This perky pup was named after “Graceland’ - Elvis Presley’s home in Memphis, TN. The Perry family, who were lucky enough to welcome Sadie into their home a year ago, are originally from Memphis and this was their special way of bringing some of their southern roots into the newest addition of their family. Many of you may know Angie Perry who is a local in our community and is also the owner of The Scout Guide – Main Line and Philadelphia. Angie along with her husband Jonathan and their 3 children Jon, Morgan and Harrison have all warmly embraced their furry companion Miss Sadie. Sadie’s breed is a very specific offspring of a poodle and a goldendoodle. This breed makes Sadie a family friendly dog who not only is non-shedding/hypoallergenic but is also incredibly affectionate, intelligent and is known to develop strong bonds with their owners. These characteristics have proven to be true with Sadie, in particular her intelligence. She has learned how to work the system a bit around the household when it comes time to being fed. Sadie has been known to get a little clever by jumping up on Angie’s desk, grabbing an item to tear up long enough to get the attention of Angie and show that she is hungry! These little shenanigans only add to the joy and laughter that she has brought to the Perry family. She has opened up immensely from the little shy puppy who walked into a family with three active children buzzing around the house. But it didn’t take her long to find her place in this loving home. This love was given to Sadie from day one, but Sadie herself may possibly be the one who has reminded the Perry family what is most valuable in life. “The most important thing having a pet has taught me or shown me is unconditional love,” commented Angie. “For humans it’s the toughest gift to give. For pets, or at least Sadie, it’s a gift she gives me every time I come back home and see her.” Afterall, how could you resist a face like that welcoming you through your door each and every day. rtQuilt Elements, 12th Anniversary International Juried Quilt Exhibition, will be on display at the Wayne Art Center from March 18 – April 30, 2016. The opening reception will be from 1PM-4PM on Saturday, April 2nd in both the Davenport and Ethel Sergeant Clark Smith Galleries. This eagerly anticipated exhibition, celebrating its twelfth anniversary year, is dedicated to enhancing the public’s awareness of art quilts while providing a venue for established and emerging artists to share their creative endeavors. ArtQuilt Elements has earned a rapidly growing reputation as one of the nation’s most recognized art quilt exhibitions. The finest works are featured, supporting the Center’s mission of expanding the public’s awareness of fine contemporary craft, and significantly benefiting all educational programs for children and adults. “We are very pleased to host the 12th anniversary exhibition with this year’s artists from across the United States and as far as Australia, British Columbia, Germany, Ontario and the United Kingdom,” said Nancy Campbell, Executive Director of Wayne Art Center. The juror Bruce W. Pepich, Executive Director and Curator of Collections at the Racine Art Museum selected 66 works from a pool of over 500 entries for this exhibition that is dedicated to providing a fine art venue for this genre of artwork. The artists whose work is in the 2016 collection employ a huge range of techniques to create their vision. Various methods are used to prepare the fabric which is then layered and stitched. Most of the artists create their own surface design effects on fabric through painting, printing, dyeing and mark making, while others collage their pieces from commercially produced fabrics. PROFILE
RAISING THE STANDARD OF TAILORING by Laurie Wightman
W
e had the opportunity to sit down with owner, Rob Nikpour and General Manager/ Head Designer, Melanie Gircsis of SewRob to learn more about their premier local tailoring business here in Wayne. They have truly re-defined what high-end custom tailoring and apparel design stand for! How did the name SewRob come about? Can you embellish a bit on how Rob Nikpour became a custom tailor?
SewRob was actually developed as an evolution of sign names. Rob was running his first tailoring operation out of a garage where he made his first sign that read, Sewing by Rob. Eventually “by” dropped off, and SewRob became not only the name of the business but also our logo. Rob gained the passion for this industry as a child while sitting on his grandmother’s lap and watching her crochet and knit. When he was an apparel retail manager, he was extremely unsatisfied with the tailoring he was receiving on his suits. He decided he was going to raise the standard of tailoring by preserving fabrics and finishing with the original manufacturer’s finishes. The title custom tailor doesn’t really capture the essence of SewRob, we truly are apparel engineers and architects. When did SewRob open in Eagle Village Shops located in Wayne, and what are all of the services you provide out of your Wayne location? WayneMagazine.com |March/April 2016
27
We opened our second location in Wayne in September 2013. We provide all of the same great services in the Wayne location as we do in the Wynnewood location that was established in 2000. These include tailoring, repairs and custom making. However this encompasses a very wide range of individual services we provide on a day-to-day basis. One of our catchphrases has been “we can sew anything that can fit under a sewing machine.” Along with tailoring we also cater to those aficionados in denim and knitwear. Another one of our specialties is Garment Copy. Everybody has that special piece in their wardrobe they wish they had in a different fabrication. What would you say makes SewRob stand out as apparel engineers and architects in Wayne and on the Main Line? SewRob strives for perfection in the complete look. We don’t carry the title of stylist, but our pinning specialists do recognize the most current trends and finishes. We can offer advice on whether to update a piece or invest the money into something new. We listen to what clients want, offer our advice, and always keep cost versus outcome in mind. SewRob is committed to raising the standard of tailoring and garment production. We preserve design integrity with unrelenting attention to detail, using classical craftsmanship, and utilizing modern techniques and equipment. Our very passionate staff is committed to providing the best service possible for our clients.
With prom and wedding season here, what kinds of specialty services do you provide that distinguish you as the premier tailor to turn to for customers’ needs with prom dresses and/or wedding dresses? SewRob offers a 30% off discount for all prom apparel tailoring when your appointment is booked through the month of March. SewRob offers 30% discount for all bride and groom tailoring when your appointment is booked through the month of May. What kind of experience can a client expect to have when they work with SewRob? Clients should expect to book an appointment to receive the best service at SewRob. They should bring all necessary components of their ensemble for the fitting when they schedule with one of our pinning specialists. You can book an appointment on our website at SewRob.com or by calling one of our locations. Our professional pining specialists will do our best to suggest the best course of action for your garment, with the most accurate pricing and delivery date as possible. You will receive an invoice that is emailed to you for your records. And notified via email when your order is ready for pick up. Customers can also email questions or images of garments to have a consultation or an exchange of ideas.

ayne Magazine has been following the fun-filled adventures of The Peppermint Family in the exciting series of books that have been released for the last two years by local author, Nikki Maloney. Every book in the collection invites the reader to share intimate moments with each family member of the Peppermint’s and embrace the many lessons there are to learn in life. In the 5th and most recent installment of The Peppermints, Nikki Maloney captures the precious moments, as a family welcomes a new puppy into their home.
Just as spring is a time of renewal, the much-anticipated book, The Peppermints: Big Sur, is undergoing a rebirth of its own. In addition to the rich children’s literature series having a vintage modern appeal, the latest book has a fresh new look. The new format of the book will go from an 8x10 size to a smaller, more traditional chapter book size. This change predominantly came about from reader suggestion and Maloney wanted to honor their requests. More changes include a talented, new illustrator named Christian Ridder, who has succeeded in reimagining the loveable family. New story, new illustrator, and new format equals an entertaining rebirth of The Peppermints that is sure to delight: When Mr. and Mrs. Peppermint take a trip out west, Pete, Patty, Peggy, and Philpot assure their parents that they can hold down the fort while they are gone. With the help of Mr. Peppermint’s mother, Mimi, the children prove they can handle more responsibility. Mr. and Mrs. Peppermint come across the perfect souvenir in California that may be the surprise of a lifetime. Lemon Blueberry Tart For the crust: • 2 cups ground Biscoff Cookie crumbs from (1) 8.8 oz. package • 1/3 cup sugar • 6 tbsp. unsalted butter, melted
Finishing the tart: • 1 pint fresh cleaned blueberries • 1/3 cup apricot jam, heated and pressed through a sieve – thinned with1 tbsp. warm water
For the lemon filling: • 1 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice • 3 large eggs plus 1 egg yolk • 3/4 cup plus 2 tbsp. sugar • Pinch of salt • 2 sticks of chilled unsalted butter, diced 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. 2. Combine the cookie crumbs, sugar and melted butter in a bowl and mix well. 3. Pour into a 10-inch tart pan with a removable bottom and press evenly into the sides and then the bottom. 4. Bake for 10 minutes and then cool to room temperature. 5. Bring 2 inches of water in a saucepan to a simmer over medium heat, top with a stainless steel bowl (not touching the water) 6. In the bowl, continuously whisk lemon juice, eggs & yolk, sugar and salt until mixture thickens to the point that you leave a trail through the curd, 10 to 12 minutes. (temperature should be about 170 degrees) 7. Remove the bowl and let cool till just warm, stirring occasionally to release the heat. Pour curd into a blender. 8. With the blender running, add the butter a bit at a time, blending after each addition until fully incorporated. 9. The curd will be pale yellow and quite thick. Pour into prepared shell, shaking to smooth the top. Chill for 2 hours till set. 10. Top chilled tart with blueberries in a single layer and lightly apply apricot jam. 11. Serve chilled with whipped cream on the side.
