editor’s letter SEPT/OCT 2015 Wayne Magazine welcomes you back from what we hope was a long and enjoyable summer for each of you. We are thrilled to present you with our Fall Guide which is the first edition in our newly reformatted bi-monthly publication. By expanding to a larger publication on a bi-monthly format this allows more time for us to get even more creative and deliver a publication that will be filled with more stories and points of interest for the community. It is of the utmost importance to us that we continue to create a first-class publication that our readership is proud of and continues to enjoy from issue to issue. In this fresh new issue to kick off the harvest season, the Fall Guide offers parents fantastic ideas in our “Back to School” and “Halloween” guides to get their children ready for the upcoming school year. We cover a special editorial feature on the annual Devon Fall Classic which is sure to be a wonderful four day event. We include exciting happenings around town such as the Radnor Fall Festival and the newly installed “Art Inside Out” exhibit located throughout Wayne. You will also find a newly devised feature on dining, along with a delicious recipe to get you set up for the fall season. All of this and so much more to get you swept away by the crisp air and changing of seasons. As I said two years ago, this magazine’s intention is to bring you back to a time when supporting and connecting with fellow neighbors, businesses and organizations was what living in an American town was all about. dog of the month by Laurie Wightman
M
eet the mighty Milly, a Hungarian Vizsla, in all her glory at the sweet age of twoyears-old. Many people around town may know her as the MegaDog, the official mascot of Plank Studio, a renowned pilates studio located right here in Wayne. Hilary Ryan, owner of Plank Studio and mother to Milly, had been searching for the perfect dog that would fit within her active lifestyle and interests. She came across the Vizsla breed when she met a woman walking her puppy on the Radnor Trail. What struck Hilary initially was the athletic and lively demeanor of this breed, and she instinctively knew a Vizsla would be her dog of choice. Vizsla’s are known to be sporting dogs and are the smallest of the all-around pointer-retriever breeds. They are affectionate and gentle mannered, yet also demonstrate a fearlessness and protective instinct about themselves. The breed is typically known as “Velcro Dogs,” and Milly is no different as she faithfully remains by Hilary’s side at all times. “She is an incredibly loyal dog and friendly to a fault,” commented Hilary. “At Plank she sits behind the desk waiting for clients to come and say hello. I think I’ve heard her bark twice in her life, so she certainly is not the best guard dog.” Milly is named after Hilary’s favorite designer, and although she hasn’t chewed up any of the designer pieces - shenanigans should be Milly’s middle name. Between chasing bees around while getting a sting or two, or chewing on rocks and bringing the outdoors directly indoors, Milly makes for a constant clean up! Her most favorite place to run around is at the Radnor Dog Club in Wayne. Milly loves people and has become the meeter and greeter at the dog club. She eagerly charges toward the window whenever someone arrives only to slam all 39lbs of her agile frame up against the glass as if there were a trampoline underneath her. She is a constant form of entertainment for everyone involved. There was a saying once written, “Dogs may not be our whole lives but they certainly make our lives whole.” Hilary Ryan was in search of a dog that would do just this, and I believe she found the perfect little buddy in Miss Milly herself. DRESSAGE
CELEBRATES ITS 40TH ANNIVERSARY by Ginny Simon
S
ince 1975, Dressage at Devon has brought together top riders, horses, trainers and judges from across the continent and around the globe for one of the highest-rated international dressage competitions. This year is Dressage at Devon’s 40th anniversary and several special preparations are in the works to celebrate! Described as poetry in motion and ballet on horseback, dressage (French for training) is characterized by specialized movements showcasing the horse’s agility, obedience and strength, the rider’s experience and skill, as well as and the incredible partnership between horse and rider. Dressage at Devon opens with a three-day Breed Division in which horses are judged for movement and conformation. More than 20 breeds are represented. On Thursday the four-day Performance Division begins and includes four Grand Prix classes that are Olympic-level competition levels. Saturday night is often sold out but Grand Prix qualifiers take place Friday, allowing spectators to see Grand Prix riders and horses at their best. Musical freestyle classes, like dancing to the music, are favorites and take place Saturday and Sunday. Please visit the website for schedules. WayneMagazine.com | September/October 2015

Other highlights include: Tempel Lipizzan Stallions - The Lipizzan breed represents more than 400 years of select breeding and is considered Europe’s oldest breed of domesticated horses. Developed during the late Renaissance, these horses are a culmination of beauty, strength and intelligence. “Airs above the ground” are the spectacular dressage movements made famous by the Lipizzans.
Ladies’ Hat Contest – This haberdashery extravaganza invites ladies to show off their creative flair. Contestants (no baseball hats please) receive free admission to the event that day and compete for unique prizes. Festival Shops – Spectators will be treated to some of the best food in the horse show circuit and more than 90 vendors offering everything from clothing and jewelry to art and ceramics for equestrians and non-equestrians alike. Dressage at Devon will take place from September 29 through October 4, 2015 at the Devon Horse Show Grounds in Devon, PA. General admission for Dressage at Devon is $10 for adults. Children ages 4-12 are $5, and children under 3 are admitted free. Reserved seating is $25 on Friday, $35 on Saturday, and $10 on Sunday. Tickets are available online at www.dressageatdevon.org. General admission is available at the door.

Hunters Chicken by Robert Groebel • • • • • • • • •
1/2 ounce dried porcini mushrooms 2 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 tablespoon olive oil One 4-pound chicken, cut into 8 pieces (breasts cut in half horizontally) Salt & Pepper All-purpose flour, for dusting 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced 1 medium carrot, ¼ inch dice 1 red bell pepper, seeded and thinly sliced
• • • • • • • • •
2 large shallots, sliced 2 large garlic cloves, sliced 3/4 cup dry white wine 1 tablespoons tomato paste 1 28-ounce can pealed whole tomatoes, crushed by hand 1/2 cup chicken stock 1 sprig of rosemary 1 bay leaf 1/2 pound button mushrooms, cleaned, stemmed & halved
To Serve: Chopped flat leaf Italian parsley, Grated Pecorino Romano, Roasted new potatoes 1. Soak porcini mushrooms in 2 cups of boiling water, strain, and roughly chop. Set aside. 2. Meanwhile, in a large enameled cast-iron casserole over medium high heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter with 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Season the chicken with salt and pepper; dust with flour, shaking off any excess. When the butter is melted and bubbling subsides, add half of the chicken and cook, turning occasionally, until browned all over, about 7 minutes. Don’t rush this step or crowd your pan; you want to develop a nice crust on the chicken. Transfer to a plate. Repeat steps with the remaining butter, oil and chicken. 3. With the heat still on medium high, add the onion, carrot, red peppers, shallots and garlic along with a generous pinch of salt and pepper stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are softened, about 5 minutes. 4. Add the wine and tomato paste and simmer until slightly reduced, 2 minutes. Add the tomatoes with their juice, stock, soaked and chopped porcini, rosemary and bay leaf and bring to a boil. Nestle the chicken in the sauce, cover and simmer over moderately low heat until nearly cooked, about 25 minutes. Stir in the button mushrooms and cook, uncovered, until the chicken is cooked through and sauce has slightly thickened, about 12 minutes. Remove rosemary sprig and bay leaf. Transfer the stew to plates adding a few roasted new potatoes; garnish with parsley and top with pecorino to serve. WayneMagazine.com | September/October 2015

TWO SISTERS, ONE PURPOSE
When did you open the shop here in Wayne? We opened the shop at 164 E. Lancaster Ave in Wayne this past May. We opened our first shop in Philadelphia for 3 years, but our business began as a wholesale accessory brand in ‘09. As we outgrew our first store in Philadelphia we came to Wayne looking to introduce our story and our products to the Main Line. What is the inspiration behind Mushmina? We are a family business; two sisters from the suburbs of NJ, in appreciation of the unique with much respect for artisan craft and the positive impact of social and environmental responsibility through our small business. The dream of creating Mushmina, a fashion company with a social mission, began with our desire to employ artisans in developing countries, preserving their traditional crafts and educating customers on the importance of knowing who/what they support with their purchasing power. I studied jewelry and textile design at the University of the Arts which is what brought us to Philadelphia. Mushmina’s introduction to the artisan sector was when my sister Heather served as a Peace Corps Volunteer working with artisans in Morocco. While Heather was living in Morocco I finished my U Arts degree and was studying cultural anthropology and handicraft in Mali. We both recognized that in these countries artisans are taught traditional crafts with little opportunity to generate income. We saw an opportunity to use our design backgrounds to create products with cultural integrity and soul and to connect these artisans and their stories to the western fashion industry.

What type of retail mix can a customer expect to see in your store? Our store offers unique stylish collections of global mindful fashion and home products including our own fair trade Mushmina brand of accessories. I custom design the Mushmina collection of fabric and leather handbags, scarves and mixed metal jewelry collaborating with artisans in Morocco. In addition to our own designs we curate finds from the mystical souks and small towns of Morocco like the popular kilim boots, tea pots, lanterns and textiles. We also commission handmade carpets directly from the women who make them in their homes in the countryside and mountains. Our Sahara Collection Jewelry consists of rustic hammered and etched silver and brass earrings, bangles, and necklaces designed by us and produced by a master ‘mallum’ metalsmith from the silver capital of Morocco. In addition to our own line, we also carry several sustainable clothing brands. To name a few, Prairie Undergound (USA), Ace and Jig (India) and Osei Duro (Ghana).
If you had to choose a “must have” item from Mushmina that each customer shouldn’t live without...what would it be? We think every Mushmina customer should have a pair of our hammered hoop earrings and one of our classic fabric handbags. Both have been popular since we began as a wholesale accessory brand 6 years ago and are most recognizable of our brand. Known by their unique limited edition Moroccan textiles and hand detailing, our classics are the Mina and Hobo bag, our Casablanca Clutch and newest for the season, the Zohara wood handle bag. The hoops are hand hammered in brass and silver and come in crescent, tear, circle and rectangle. These items have worked for all ages and never go out of style. What kind of experience would you like your customers to have when they shop at Mushmina? We offer a vibrant global shopping experience that enables our customers to contribute to our triple bottom line (people, profit, planet) while taking home a fashionable product. Our sales team are creatives that take pride in educating our customers on our merchandise and providing our personalized styling expertise.

THE NEW KID IN TOWN
T
acos immediately excite me and most everyone with a pulse. Street food? Fine dining? I’ll let that debate boil over to the blog-o-sphere. Wherever you eat these delicious packages of goodness is irrelevant to their deliciousness. On a recent saunter about Wayne I stumbled upon the newly opened Pipeline Taco, located in downtown at 165 E. Lancaster Avenue. I immediately fell into the “taco-trans” that a “Tacophile” as myself only can. From my first step into the door, they had me at hello. The service and vibe is definitely chill and genuinely friendly. Original surf art surrounds you (by actual surfer artists), and tunes warm over the room providing a space designed to hang. Professionals, kids, moms and friends were all looking rather delighted with the mid-day vibe of “I feel like I’m on vacation”...at lunch! The food offerings feature a curated greatest-hits of all things taco joint. But let’s not split hairs here, this isn’t just a taco joint. From a cleverly crafted list of choices such as the Pipeline fish taco, Tatonka buffalo shrimp taco, and the kale vegetarian Ono, one immediately realizes this has been thoroughly thought out. Hormone free ingredients, and working toward a local all organic menu too, the owners are dialed into what we want. Fresh flavors abound from the onset of the Haole Guacamole, straight forward and buttery fresh deliciousness, to the grilled fish taco with its delicate mango papaya were screaming freshness. Pico and fruit salsas were immaculately constructed leaving the ingredients to do all the talking - fantastic! The Kalua pork taco was deep on flavor contrasting against the sublime pineapple salsa and Korean BBQ sauce which sent me into orbit. Other additions such as perfectly seasoned quesadillas and rice bowls were delightful, all to be washed down by all natural New Hope Sodas. Watermelon soda and Italian Lime-aid? Yes please! In all honesty, I felt healthier than when I entered. Forgive the colloquialism, but I’m completely stoked.....you should be too.
