THE LAUSANNE WAY

of Giving and Getting Involved

Message from the Headmaster Dear Lausanne Family & Friends, At Lausanne, the partnership between the school, our students and our parents forms the foundation of school and student success. That’s why so much of what we do is dependent on the close relationships we form with one another and the contributions each of us make to the health and welfare of our community as a whole. In the following pages, you will see how you can become a partner in your child’s success by volunteering to help in the classroom, participating in our many activities and giving to the school through Annual and Capital Giving. Whether you have one hour, one day, one week or one year to offer, dedicated volunteers make a tremendous impact on the success of our efforts and help build the Lausanne community. Once you’ve read this information, feel free to contact me with any questions you have. Thank you for being such a vital part of our school community! Cheers!

Stuart McCathie Headmaster

THE GUIDE TO GIVING What is the Lausanne Fund? The Lausanne Fund enhances every aspect of education at Lausanne—beyond what is possible with tuition alone. Without these essential gifts, our current programs would not thrive, and our teachers would not be provided with the tools needed to create innovative opportunities for our students. I already pay tuition, so why am I asked to donate to the school as well? Your gifts support everything that sets a Lausanne apart—talented and dedicated teachers, a diverse community of students, small class sizes, as well as exceptional offerings in academics, the arts and athletics. Like every other independent school, Lausanne relies on this fundraising to make these enhancements possible. This year, the money we raise for the Lausanne Fund will enable us to plan for next year. What is supported? The Lausanne Fund for the 2019–2020 academic year will support: • Greatest Need • The Arts • Faculty Continuing Education • Innovation • Financial Aid • Athletics • LynxServe, such as our work with Promise Academy, Crump Elementary and many others • Leadership Programming, such as Robotics, Debate, Model UN and many others

THE GUIDE TO GIVING

Every dollar makes an impact on tomorrow—today. Why is parent participation so important? Each year, Lausanne receives gifts that range from $10 to more than $25,000. While large leadership gifts are crucial to Lausanne’s financial stability, gifts of every size truly add up and have a significant impact. This percentage is a key indicator of the strength of the school community and has an impact on giving from outside sources; many foundations consider participation rates before agreeing to make a charitable gift to a school. We aim for 100% participation each year from our entire community. Why are donors encouraged to give early in the school year? A gift or pledge made early in the school year is a great advantage to the school because it enables us to know how much money will be available to support the budget. Because of this, we ask donors to make pledges by December 31, 2019, but gifts may be paid through May 31, 2020. Once you have made your annual gift or pledge, you will not receive another Lausanne Fund solicitation until the following school year. How much should you give? All gifts, no matter the size, are impactful and deeply appreciated. Giving Categories within the Lausanne Fund: *Nelse Thompson Society $25,000+ *Founder’s Society $10,000+ *Headmaster Society $5,000+ *Blue & Gold Society $2,500+ *KTH Society $1,200+ Collegiate Circle $500+ Horizon Circle $250+ Lynx Circle $150+ Donor Circle Up to $149 *Denotes membership in the Lausanne Way Leadership Society.

THE GUIDE TO GIVING

What is the Lausanne Way Leadership Society? The generosity and commitment of donors who give $1,200 and above to the Lausanne Fund is recognized through membership in the Lausanne Way Leadership Society. Members receive special invitations to exclusive events as well as insider information about the school from the administration. What is a matching gift? A matching gift is a contribution to Lausanne by your employer. If your organization has a Matching Gift Program, it will match or possibly exceed your annual gift to Lausanne. This is a unique way for donors to double the impact of their gift. What recent short-term projects has the Lausanne Fund supported? 2011: Waterfront improvements 2012: Renovations and additions to Tully Dining Hall 2013: Synthetic turf field 2014: Welcome Center 2015: Outdoor Discovery Center and Press Box 2016: Two new buses 2017: U pgrades to the Elder Performing Arts Center and innovation in our classrooms 2018: Endowment for student programming and faculty continuing education 2019: Transportation for LynxServe and innovation in our classrooms How is the Lausanne Fund different from a Capital Campaign? The Lausanne Fund provides support for immediate projects and needs which can be implemented or completed the year after the money is raised, such as support of student programming and faculty continuing education. A Capital Campaign is a multi-year effort to raise money for large-scale campus improvements, such as the construction of our beautiful library and sports complex.

THE GUIDE TO GIVING

The Campaign for Lausanne The next stage of the campus’ growth will be the construction of a new Upper School, a fine and performing arts wing and renovated spaces for Lower and Middle School students. This exciting and transformative project is meant to upgrade all our facilities to support the student-centered education that is characteristic of the International Baccalaureate Programme. We hope all members of our community will support this important effort. More information will be available in the coming months. Have there been other Capital Campaigns? Yes! The following were funded by multi-year capital campaigns: 2004: Elder Performing Arts Center 2005: Upper Middle School 2010: Library and Blue Heron CafÊ 2010: Gym, weight room, locker rooms and aerobic facility 2010: Two new playing fields, field house, stands, sprint track and tennis courts What is an Endowment? Endowments are funds which are permanently set aside by donors and provide lasting support of our programs. A great example is the Alumni Endowment for Financial Aid which is growing steadily thanks to the generosity of our alumni. Establishing an endowment is a deeply meaningful way to create a permanent legacy on behalf of our students. What is Planned Giving? Many in the Lausanne community have provided for Lausanne in their wills through a bequest. Others have made estate provisions through the purchase of life insurance, the establishment of trusts or the acquisition of gift annuities. These ways of giving provide exceptional tax benefits for the donor and frequently enable them to make larger gifts than they ever thought possible. The Walter Coppedge Heritage Society has been established to recognize donors who have made a provision for Lausanne in their estate plans. THE GUIDE TO GETTING INVOLVED How to Get Involved? Lausanne Parent Connections All parents are members of our parents’ association, Lausanne Parent Connections (LPC). Building upon our joyful sense of family and community, Lausanne Parent Connections provides meaningful, rewarding and inclusive opportunities which celebrate and enrich the Lausanne experience for all. We hope all parents become involved with LPC, whether through leadership, volunteering or attending our events. We kick off the year with the All-School Tailgate, followed by the Scholastic Book Fair and Fall Carnival, our biggest community event in the Fall. Throughout the year, we host several faculty appreciation events, most notably Teacher Appreciation Week in the Spring. We also host an annual Auction, which celebrates a different theme each year and brings together parents, alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents, faculty, staff and friends for an evening of entertainment and fun. The success of our events relies heavily on our volunteers, and we encourage all parents to get involved in an area which suits their schedule and talents. Please see a complete list of volunteer opportunities on page 14.

THE GUIDE TO GETTING INVOLVED

Lausanne Alumni Association All individuals who have either graduated from or attended Lausanne for at least one year are considered alumni and are automatically members of the Lausanne Alumni Association. Alumni Board The Alumni Board meets during the school year and participates in the life of the school in many ways, including chairing strategic committees, hosting regional and Memphis area events, sponsoring College Care Packages and volunteering in the life of the school. The Board welcomes and encourages all Alumni Association members to volunteer throughout the year and to contact the Alumni Office if interested in becoming involved on the Board. Class Agents and Regional Representatives Lausanne’s network of Class Agents and Regional Representatives maintains and cultivates the relationship between our alumni and the school. Agents take a personal interest in helping others relate to the school, enabling them to renew ties to their alma mater. Class Agents are the first line of contact with members of their graduating class and maintain ongoing communication with their classmates. Regional Representatives serve as ambassadors to alumni who live in the representative’s area, providing information about local Lausanne events and networking opportunities. Young Alumni College Connection The Young Alumni College Connection ensures that our newest alumni (graduates of the last 4 years) stay connected to their alma mater and experience a smooth transition into their college years. We pair our exiting seniors with current alumni who live in the cities where our seniors will soon be attending college or with alumni who have graduated from these colleges and universities. Lausanne Link Launched in June 2017, Lausanne Link is Lausanne’s online and app-based alumni networking platform. This innovative new program not only allows alumni to reconnect with former classmates and faculty but also find or become a mentor, seek job advice, search and post jobs and internships, connect easily to relevant school publications and news and hear about alumni events across the country.
