WELCOME TO LA VILLETTE
HISTORY & HERITAGE
AN URBAN PROJECT AND AN ARCHITECTURAL COMPLEX
The Parc de la Villette is an example of French expertise in urban redevelopment, as evidenced by its exceptional architectural heritage, where the Grande Halle, erected in the 19th century, stands alongside Bernard Tschumi’s follies and the Geode, built between 1983 and 1986, as well as Jean Nouvel’s Paris Philharmonic, which opened the park to the 21st century.
The Parc de la Villette is not just a park but a cultural hub that has redefined the concept of urban landscapes for over three decades. It is a space where culture and nature coexist, fostering a vibrant dialogue between the arts and society.
The Parc de la Villette stretches over 55 hectares from Porte de la Villette to Porte de Pantin, making
it the largest park in the capital and the first urban cultural park in Europe.
Steeped in history, the Parc de la Villette stands on the grounds of the former slaughterhouses, which operated from 1867 to 1974. Since 1979, it has been a bridge, connecting various cultural institutions on the site and preserving the rich heritage of the past.
The EPPGHV, or L’Établissement public du parc et de la Grande Halle de la Villette, ensures the daily management and maintenance of the park’s built and landscaped spaces and the cultural programming of numerous venues throughout the park.
THE CITY OF MUSIC PARIS PHILHARMONIC
The City of Music - Paris Philharmonic is a musical haven, a one-of-a-kind complex offering a diverse musical repertoire. Its spaces are meticulously designed to enhance the listening experience. From its vibrant concert programming to its engaging museum, exhibitions, and many activities, it beckons visitors to embark on a musical journey like no other.
Open to All
The City of Music-Paris Philharmonic is a global musical destination. Its diverse programming, enriched by the Orchestre de Paris and resident ensembles, welcomes artists from around the world. The institution offers a rich tapestry of musical experiences, from classical masterpieces to contemporary and world music. Museum of Music
The Museum of Music displays over 1,000 instruments and art objects from the 17th to the 21st century. Thematic exhibitions, dedicated to significant musical or artistic figures, promote the intersection of disciplines and cultural issues.
Educational Dimension
Education is at the heart of the institution’s mission, offering numerous opportunities for adults and children to familiarize themselves with music or deepen their knowledge: educational and participatory concerts, instrumental practice workshops, conferences, workshop visits, theoretical works, and digital resources.
Complementing this offer, the Children’s Philharmonic, a new 1,000 m² space dedicated to children aged 4-10, offers a journey emphasizing a sensitive and poetic approach to music.
An Exceptional Architectural Complex
The City of Music - Paris Philharmonic brings together two great names in architecture: Christian de Portzamparc for the City of Music and Jean Nouvel for the Philharmonic. With a distinctive style, each architect has risen to the challenge of creating buildings that house concert halls, exhibition spaces, and numerous areas dedicated to musicians’ work and public reception. The City of Music - Paris Philharmonic thus forms an exceptional architectural complex within the Parc de la Villette
THE CITY OF SCIENCE AND INDUSTRY
Created in 1986, the City of Science and Industry is a museum that serves as a true bridge between science, society, and technology. It is a privileged place for discovery, innovation, and education for a diverse audience.
A BIT OF HISTORY…
Designed by Adrien Fainsilber and inaugurated on March 13, 1986, the architectural complex of the City of Science and Industry plays with contrasts between a monumental parallelepiped (250 meters long, 150 meters wide, and 50 meters high) made of concrete and the 36-meter diameter shimmering faceted sphere of the Geode.
The building marks its environment with its contemporary signature by incorporating elements such as water, which reflects the building and the Geode, a landscaped park, and the transparency of its facades. The specificity of the City of Science and Industry is affirmed in its play of scales and generous volumes, lights, and materials, as well as in the articulation of its public spaces: innovative temporary and permanent exhibitions, a library, spaces dedicated to children, services, new technologies, and experiments.
PERMANENT EXHIBITIONS
LA VILLETTE
THE GRANDE HALLE
Created in 1865 by Jules de Mérindol on the orders of Baron Haussmann, the Grande Halle is the historical and symbolic building of La Villette, recognizable by its exceptional architecture. Adjacent to the slaughterhouses formerly located in the north of La Villette, no fewer than 4,600 cattle were traded in the Grande Halle. When the slaughterhouses closed in 1974, the Grande Halle was transformed into an exhibition and cultural event center while retaining its same glass and iron architecture.
THE 26 FOLLIES
Architect Bernard Tschumi combined a play of overlapping points, lines, and surfaces to add depth to the park and make its surface more dynamic. The points, numbering 26, are represented by follies placed at regular intervals every 120 meters. Like the constructions of the 18th century, the follies enliven the park with their bright red appearance.
THE PAUL-DELOUVRIER PAVILION / LITTLE VILLETTE
This building was designed by Catalan architect Oscar Tusquets. Inaugurated in 1991, it combines three geometric shapes (oval, square, and rectangle). Named in honor of the first president of La Villette, the Paul-Delouvrier Pavilion is entirely covered in white marble from Andalusia. Since 2016, this place has become a space dedicated to children and families: Little Villette.
THE BIG TOP
The Big Top is the prominent venue for contemporary circus performances in Paris. Covering an area of 4,200 square meters, it has hosted emerging and established circus companies since 1990. In 2013, La Villette built the Chapithôtel, a residence for circus companies in residence or performance.
LA VILLETTE PAVILION
Located at the park’s entrance on the Porte de la Villette side, this octagonal rotunda long housed veterinarians when the slaughterhouses were in use. In 2010, this building became the WIP Villette. Recently renamed the Pavillon Villette, it now hosts artists and companies in residence.
THE PÉRIPHÉRIQUE
Situated in the northeast part of the park, this venue hosts the Espace Périphérique, a residency program dedicated to contemporary forms of circus arts, puppetry, and public space arts co-managed by La Villette and the city of Paris. Various cultural events and festivals, primarily dedicated to urban cultures, are also offered throughout the year.
THE HALLE AUX CUIRS
Initially intended for the processing and storage of hides, the Halle aux Cuirs has, since 2002, hosted artist residencies as part of La Villette’s policy of supporting creation. This includes the UDAI (Urban Dance Artist Initiatives) program, the only French program supporting hip-hop dance creation. Some residency events are open to the public.
GREEN SPACES
The park has 35 hectares of lawns, themed gardens, and iconic green spaces.
See pages 17 and 18, Gardens & Nature Trail.
ARTWORK THROUGHOUT THE PARK
See page 16, Artistic Trail.
THE PARIS NATIONAL CONSERVATORY OF DANCE AND MUSIC
The Conservatoire national supérieur de Music et de Danse de Paris is a public institution of higher artistic education. As the leading French institution for transmitting musical and choreographic arts, the Conservatory also provides high-level education. It remains contemporary through an ambitious policy of creation, research, and outreach to the public. Its numerous international partnerships, renowned professors, and alums make it a global reference.
CONTEMPORARY MUSIC DOCUMENTATION CENTER
The resource center is dedicated to creative music, and the CMDC holds a unique collection of scores, recordings, and videos. In addition to a consultation space open to the public, the CMDC offers multiple digital resources and organizes meetings with key figures in music creation.
THE PARIS ZENITH AT LA VILLETTE
The Zenith was built in 1984 under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and Communication. Its design was specifically tailored to rock music and, more broadly, popular music. The venue hosts nearly 150 events and welcomes over 700,000 spectators each year.
THE CABARET SAUVAGE
The Cabaret Sauvage is a prototype of a soundproofed tent with studio-quality acoustics, the first of its kind in the world. World music, DJ nights, live performances, dance, and circus acts share the spotlight at this venue.
THE TRABENDO
The Trabendo is an intimate concert venue renowned for its stage setup, which allows excellent proximity between the artist and the audience. Since 2012, it has been managed by Tsugi, a magazine dedicated to the emerging music scene, and the show producer Super! Its innovative programming showcases rock, indie, electro, rap, and world music talents. Notable artists who have performed there include The Rolling Stones, Idles, Smashing Pumpkins, Jeanne Added, and Jeff Mills.
THE PARIS-VILLETTE THEATER
The Paris-Villette Theater, supported by the city of Paris, was the first cultural establishment on the La Villette site in 1972. Since 2013, its new management has adopted a policy of supporting creation to encourage new forms of theater and dance, benefiting all audiences, particularly young people (from 2 years old).
THE NATIONAL CENTER FOR SONG HERITAGE
The National Center for Song Heritage, endorsed by the Ministry of Culture, offers productions that stage and arrange popular music repertoires of all styles. These productions are predominantly performed by artists under 30 years old from national conservatories or from TÉC, its own higher education school.
THE GEODE
This building accurately evokes the Earth. With its exceptional architecture, it houses a cinema equipped with one of the largest hemispheric screens in the world, paired with an extraordinarily powerful sound system. Join us soon to discover a new, unprecedented, and spectacular experience (in collaboration with the Pathé Gaumont group).

TRAILS THROUGH THE PARK
ARCHITECTURE TRAIL
THE CITY OF SCIENCE AND INDUSTRY - THE GEODE
Adrien Fainsilber was selected as the general contractor in 1980. The City of Science was inaugurated in 1986, and The Geode in 1985.
THE GRANDE HALLE
The Grande Halle was built between 1865 and 1867 by Jules de Mérindol (a close collaborator of the architect Viollet-le-Duc), who was also the architect of the Carreau du Temple. Listed in the supplementary inventory of Historic Monuments in 1979, it was inaugurated on January 25, 1985. The building underwent a second renovation in 2007 and now offers several fully modular halls and reception areas, a bookstore, a restaurant, and a construction workshop in the basement, covering a total area of 18,000 m².
LA VILLETTE PAVILION
The la Villette Pavilion, a relic of the former slaughterhouses, housed the National Butchers’ Union headquarters and the veterinarians responsible for health control. Renovated in 1987 by architects Pierre du BessetDominique Lyon and Kazutoshi Morita, the venue became the Maison de la Villette. It housed the headquarters of a center for memory working on the neighborhood, its changes, and its nearby suburbs until 1995. It then became a venue for shows, festivals, and artist residencies.
THE NUBIAN LION FOUNTAIN
The architect Pierre-Simon Girard erected the fountain in 1811 on the Place du Château-d’Eau (now the Place de la République). It had a cast iron basin and lions designed at the foundries of Le Creusot. Later, it was moved to the courtyard of the livestock market and served as a watering trough for animals arriving at the market. It has been listed in the supplementary inventory of Historic Monuments since 1979.
THE PARIS CONSERVATORY
Christian de Portzamparc was appointed as the general contractor in 1985, and the new building housing the Conservatory at La Villette was inaugurated in 1990.
THE CITY OF MUSIC
Christian de Portzamparc was appointed as the general contractor of the City of Music in January 1985. It was inaugurated in December 1995.
THE PARIS PHILHARMONIC
Designed by architect Jean Nouvel, the Philharmonic was inaugurated in January 2015. Its belvedere, accessible to the public from March to October, Wednesday to Sunday, offers a 360° view of the park, Paris, and its suburbs.
THE PARIS-VILLETTE THEATER
Formerly known as the Pavillon de la Bourse (1867) during the time of the slaughterhouses and livestock market, this neoclassical building has been listed in the supplementary inventory of Historic Monuments since 1979.
ARTISTIC TOURS
PHILIPPE STARCK’S CHAIRS
Philippe Starck won the urban furniture competition for the park in 1985. He envisioned classic, clean forms made from stainless steel, promoting a conviviality uncommon in public spaces.
THE BURIED BICYCLE
This monumental sculpture echoes the movements of Land Art and Pop Art. Designed by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, it was inaugurated in 1990.
BUREN’S PEBBLES
Buren’s work is located in the Bamboo Garden, which alternates black basalt pebbles from Ardèche with gray pebbles from the Rhône. Opened in 1987 and designed by architect Alexandre Chemetoff, it is the second bamboo grove in France after the one in Anduze.
THE SOUND CYLINDER
The Sound Cylinder was designed by Bernard Leitner , a sound sculptor, and was commissioned officially in 1990. The speakers behind each of the eight perforated concrete screens produce “sounds moving like a mass in space.” This work is integrated into the Bamboo Garden.
GARDEN AND NATURE TOURS
THE ARTERY
This work, commissioned by the Ministry of Culture and inaugurated in December 2006, was created by artist Fabrice Hyber at the initiative of Sidaction. It traces and commemorates years of battling AIDS.
The garden walk, or “cinematic promenade,” unfolds like a filmstrip casually laid over the park. As the visitor strolls along, they discover, through successive framings, a series of twelve thematic gardens delineated by footbridges and, at night, by a string of lights. Depending on their mood, visitors can explore various garden configurations: play areas, tree-planted grounds, sound elements, aquatic atmospheres, and intimate spaces conducive to reflection.
